“Screaming Eagles Wings” by David Rose takes you back to the early days of the Iraq war during operation phantom fury. Although this is a fictional story, it possesses enough truth to paint an accurate picture of what life must have been like during that turbulent time. You follow the lives of a handful of recon marines both on and off the battlefield and he truly gets to the heart of the conflict. The characters are well crafted and the story is believable. There are a few predictable parts/tropes but they don’t detract from the story and honestly even though you know certain things are likely you welcome them when they come. This book kept me wanting to read it and I felt like I knew this group of guys. All in all I highly recommend and I’m glad I read it.

Author David Rose has brought the reality of military brotherhood, its power and raw emotions, to a novel regarding the fighting in and around Fallujah during Operation Phantom Fury. It's often difficult for veterans to explain the depth of their relationships to their non-veteran friends and family members. In his work, Rose deftly dips into the far past, recent past and present of his protagonist to give us a powerful connection to the characters and the challenges they face both in and out of the military.

A beautifully crafted novel that captures an in-depth life of a military service member before, during and after a deployment during the GWOT. Punching, as always, the insights of the good, the bad, and the ugly of each transition. Much more than a book of homecoming, war and the innocence lost. Hands-down the best book of the GWOT era. Brilliant use of fiction with so much truth shown.
