Twisted: Being normal is overrated

Rate this book
Cayden Rivers wants nothing more than to be normal, but we don?t always get what we want. For years he has been hiding a secret, afraid of being labeled a ?freak?. Every day he goes to school, plays football, spends time with his girlfriend, and helps carry his drunken adopted father to bed. Nobody knows the truth about his unnatural speed and strength, including his life-long friend Camilla.

Suddenly, four strangers enter Cayden?s life, and not only do they know his secret, they also have one of their own. With their help, Cayden discovers there is more to his power, something much more dangerous. Something other people will kill to possess.

Camilla Marchetti wishes her parents were around more. She gets lonely sleeping in her big empty house night after night. Sure, she has all the money she could ever need, but the only person who is there for her is Cayden. He has his own family and a girlfriend who takes up most of his time, so Camilla knows he won?t be there for her forever, and recently he?s been acting really strange.

Will Cayden be able to keep his secret and his friendship with Camilla, or will his new found power destroy everything, including his own life?

Switching between Cayden and Camilla's point of view, Twisted will leave you aching for more.

(3.5 Stars) There are some books that I have a really hard time rating, and this is one of them. Sometimes it's hard to determine if things bother me because of my own beliefs or if it's something else. I'm going to get the ugly out of the way. First of all, I am not a fan of swearing--I can overlook a few of the milder words, but this one had a lot of swearing--no f-bombs, but about everything else and a lot of it. Secondly, I love a good, clean romance, and while this one stayed clean, I felt like some boundaries were brushed upon. I'm also not a fan of a boy staying over at a girl's house (for multiple nights--in the same bed), even if nothing happens, especially when both are teens. And last of all, I'm not a big fan of teens getting drunk and wasted and all that, especially considering how the father is pretty much a drunk.

Okay...that said, I really loved the premise of this book. I thought it was fun and entertaining. I thought that Cayden was really amazing. He seemed so mature for a high school student, learning lessons in responsibility and self-control and what it means to be a true friend. I loved how he tried to use, but not misuse his abilities and how he tried so hard to protect those who were important to him. He was a little clueless in the romantic department though--not really following his heart.

Cam was such a strong girl. My heart broke a little for her, thinking about her spending Christmas and her birthday alone. I can't imagine why her parents made no time for her. She was pretty impressive and brave.

If you're someone who can overlook the content I mentioned above, then check this one out, because it really was a fun book about a great guy with some cool friends and some awesome powers.

Cayden knows he's different. He hit puberty and started getting incredibly fast and strong but has no idea why. He's the quarterback on the football team so it comes in handy to be that strong. He's adopted and has one sister, Kylie, who was also adopted. Their adoptive mom left them and their father is drunk all the time and doesn't pay any attention to them so they're pretty much left on their own. His girlfriend, Dayna, is Kylie's best friend, and captain of the cheerleaders. He also has Camilla, who is a good friend, and who he can always talk to, but she and Dayna don't get along so it isn't always comfortable.

One night, Cayden makes a shocking discovery and finds out who he really is. He disappears for a while and Camilla worries about him but he's not ready to confide in her. She starts dating the new guy, Deryk, and Cayden doesn't like him at all. Will Cayden be able to tell Camilla what's going on or continue to leave her in the dark?

This was an interesting, fun read! There was a lot of typical high school drama between Cayden, Dayna and Camilla. I loved Cayden and Camilla's relationship and how comfortable they felt around each other (okay, maybe they were a little too comfortable and I didn't like that they would sleep in the same bed overnight, even though nothing happened). Cayden appears to have the perfect life but he has a drunk father and a huge secret to deal with. He shows a lot of maturity in dealing with all that he has going on. Then other times, he was a typical high school boy, like the cliche of being the quarterback and dating the captain of the cheerleaders, and I was waiting for his eyes to open up and see what was in front of him.

Parts of the storyline were predictable but there were some "twists" and turns and I wasn't sure what direction the story was going to go or what Cayden would turn out to be. The ending was satisfying yet their story doesn't seem complete. There are going to be five novels in this series (four are currently written). I'm interested enough to see what direction this will go so it's a series I would like to continue reading!

Content: Some language (no F-bombs) and underage drinking and partying

Got this ebook as a free read on ibooks; therefore, I had to give this series a shot. This one is rating between 3-4 stars for me. I've placed 4 stars as its an independent author who created an original premise and interesting characters. Not sure if I'll keep going in the series but really think people should give this one a chance and decide for themselves.

Premise: KayCee created an interesting male MC named Cayden Rivers. He's cute, popular, has a cheerleader girlfriend...you know the type. What you don't see on the surface is that he was adopted along with a biologically unrelated girl named Kylie. But rather than have a happy, 4 person, nuclear family by the time the story starts; Cayden and Kylie have lost their adoptive mom and the dad is a part-time father at best [full time alcoholic at worst!] Cayden feels lost, alone in his popularity and not sure who to confide in or where to turn as his body is developing stronger, faster and more powerfully than a normal teenage male athlete.

GoodReads synopsis: "Cayden Rivers wants nothing more than to be normal but we dont always get what we want. He hides the fact that he is unnaturally fast and strong from everyone including his best friend Camilla. Another power is discovered along with other people that posess it, and other people that will kill for it. Will Cayden be able to keep his power and his friendship, or will his new found power destroy everything, including him? Switching between Cayden and Camilla's point of view, Twisted will leave you aching for more"

Impressions: Cayden's story pulled me in. I wanted to know where his powers came from and if he would find out. Cam & Cayden's relationship which balanced on the top fence rung between friend (or more) could have ended up as a sappy "should they/shouldn't they" story. But KayCee took it a lil deeper with their shared loss of real parental types and sympathetic friend dynamic. The villain portion of the story was a bit obvious and over the top for my tastes but the overall story was fun.

Twisted by KayCee R. is a wonderfully heart-breaking story of learning how to accept and respect every part of yourself. It is a story of learning about what makes each of us unique and cherishing those differences. We need to treat each other with authenticity, love, and encouragement. Each of us fight the same battles, so why not fight side-by-side instead of against each other? We can win when we are surrounded by the hope and courage that only our friends can provide, so let’s put down our stones and instead offer each other a helping hand.

This is a beautiful story of one who appears to belong perfectly in his world, but underneath the plastic veneer, we find the tremors of crippling fear and deep despair caused by secrets that need to remain hidden. If we are all truthful, each of us has secrets that we hide from family and friends. Things that haunt us each day and lie buried in the farthest reaches of our heart. These can range from the darkest of secrets to the deepest longing of an unfulfilled dream. Whatever the case may be, we will never truly be content and happy until we allow ourselves to be vulnerable and offer a confession for forgiveness or grab an opportunity to seize the moment. Our hearts will always have a gaping wound unless we do what we know we must in order to allow it to heal.

I was swept away by the mesmerizing and down-to-earth characters that filled the pages of this amazing story! They were so incredibly easy to relate to, and I enjoyed getting to know each of them. To watch the friendships that were discovered and those that were deepened was truly touching and stunningly portrayed. This story is one that demonstrates a bold courage of conviction and offers an exquisite promise of hope.

KayCee R. is a very talented writer who definitely has a bright future ahead of her. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of her completely charming story! I found myself laughing, anticipating, and sighing during this fascinating journey. It kept me utterly entranced and left me wanting more. I can’t wait to read more from this intriguing author.

i got this book off of smashwords and i cannot believe i waited this long to read this book!. this book may have spoilers because i just can't help it.

this book goes between two different people Cayden and Camillia. it starts off with Cayden. he is adopted and living with his sister and his father. His father is a huge drunk and is never home, and when he is home he is passed out. So, he helps take care of his sister Kylie. Well, he woke up the one day and felt different. he was able to crush a rock into ash, and was able to run in the speed of light. He was to afraid to tell anyone because he didn't want to be labeled a freak. so, he hid his talents and used them to his advantage. he was the star quarterback for his team. he had the prettiest girlfriend who was the captain of the cheerleader squad, and had a great best friend Camilla. except for the fact that his girlfriend is super jealous of his best friend, and they don't get along. Cayden has to work on his anger because his powers will get the best of him and get him caught.

well, one day after a football game there was a group of guys who wanted to talk to him. he didn't get a good feeling about it, but he went anyway. he found out these guys were his brothers. they all had these powers and was told that people were trying to kill them for there powers.

Camillia is a best friend and will do anything for her friend. She hates her best friend boyfriend because she knew she wasn't right for him. Camillia is from a rich family and they have everything. Well, that is except for parents! her parents didn't want their lives to stop since they had Camillia so they are always going on business trips, when really they are just vacationing and enjoying their time alone. So fill the void of always being alone, she goes shopping. Then she will have Cadyen come over and sleep over because she hates being alone. Camillia thinks she found the perfect guy that is until she finds out what he really wants.

I wasn't sure what to expect from Twisted; the book summary sounded interesting so I decided to join a blog tour for the book. I am so glad that I did! Twisted was exciting and had me page turning from the beginning of the book. I wanted to know more about Cayden, his sister and best friend Cam. I also wanted to know why he was such a moron and decided to date such a self-absorbed girl! Wake up Cayden, even if you are a high schooler, see what is right in front of you! But even more than that I wanted to know more about Cayden and who or what he was. Were we talking vampire, werewolf, what was he??? Author KaCee R. does a great job of keeping the reader engaged and interested in Cayden's story. As it unfolded I found myself anxious to find out more information and hopeful that things would end the way that I wanted them to! While some things in this book were a bit predictable, I still found the entire book engaging as a whole. I hurried to finish each chapter and constantly wanted more. I was disappointed in the ending, it felt too abrupt for me. Then I realized that there are more books, so that explains the more abrupt ending. All in all this was a book that drew me in and I will definitely read the next one in the series.

*This book contains cussing and underage drinking

I received a copy of this book for free, this is my honest review.

Twisted by KayCee R is the story of a teenage boy who lives with the knowledge that he's a freak. He has the ability to turn rocks to dust with his bare hands and he can run faster than the human eye can perceive. Cayden Rivers tries to lead as much of a normal life as anyone with super powers can. Sure he uses his abilities to his advantage sometimes, but he tries to remain as careful as he can because spending a lifetime being poked and prodded in a lab is not his idea of fun.

Cayden's abilities allow him to excel at football, but the table turn on him when he is tackled by someone who's speed and strength match his. But that's not where the similarities end- this guy is Cayden's replica.

I pushed the guy’s weight off me so I could get up to see if Dom caught the ball, but I stopped short when I looked up at who had tackled me. It was… me? I must have hit my head. Hard. I heard cheers roaring, but they felt like they were coming from far away. That I was watching from a distance, even though I was there on the field.

From this point on Cayden's life is thrown into chaos. As if being freakishly fast and strong wasn't crazy enough without adding long lost brothers who share the same gifts to the mix...

Twisted is based on an interesting concept but I can't help feeling like the mechanism and the origin of the concept wasn't explained well enough. Along with that I felt like the story had too much dialogue, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the dialogues weren't coupled up with enough emotion. We get to meet Cayden's girlfriend Dayne, his sister Kaylie, and his best friend Camilla, but we don't really get to know a whole lot about his feelings regarding them apart from the initial introductions. There's little to no reference to childhood pranks, or inside jokes, or even first dates. There was a lot of talking and doing, but very little of thinking.

Cayden's brothers were interesting but we don't catch a lot about their bonds amongst each other or their lives outside their family. I found myself really wanting to like Camilla a.k.a Cam but I just couldn't bring myself to. Cam was described as the nicest person ever but I just wished she'd grow a backbone and stand up to people who wrong her. I dunno; maybe that's just me.

Overall it was a nice story with a concept that had a lot of potential but there was just something lacking.

3 out of 5 stars!

I wish to thank the author for providing me a copy of this book for an honest review.

Twisted…a modern day Superman story, minus the alien side and all the other aliens. Super-fast, super strong and after a bit a whole bunch more abilities are discovered. An orphaned teenage boy who finds a whole new world opened up to him by chance and also finds that there is more to his heritage than he could ever imagine.

I found this story to actually be quite unique, especially with the book world flooded with every type of paranormal possibility at the moment. The author brings you not only into the story of Cayden’s abilities, but also into everyday life. You learn what makes Cayden tick, what makes him get out of the bed in the morning (even if he doesn’t realize it), and what has shaped him through the years and what his future possibilities are.

The author brought forth a great depiction of the typical teenage boy. Yeah, he wasn’t completely typical, but the teen romance, angst, trust issues, friendships were well written. He was the underdog that didn’t let life get him down, he pushed through, you knew where his loyalties rested and as a reader, I cheered him on every step of the way.

What I didn’t like was that there seemed to be a bit of fluff put into the story to make it longer, to stretch the story throughout some of the chapters. Too much description that made me just say, okay already, we get it now get on with the story. Even through that though, I looked forward to seeing where the story was going to go.

There is the evil “villain” in the story. From early on I had a feeling that this one individual and his cronies had ulterior motives, and at times thought, okay, maybe not, but in the end my feelings were correct but I didn’t expect it to go down the way it did. Great storytelling going on throughout the book that when this did happen, as a reader I was not disappointed but quite the opposite. I was completely attached to the book and flew through the pages to the point that the book ended. Oh, but what did my eyes spy? YES! A blurb for Book 2! Woot! Woot!

If you like a bit of human Superman, or should I say Super Teen Boy, mixed with a bit of paranormal, thrown in with romance, secrets and thrills, than this book is for you. I do recommend that with the amount of teen drinking that is described in this book that the reader should be 16+.

I have recently finished 4 Twisted books and wanted to write a review.
I got the books free as I went through the list on my book app in my phone. And I decided to read it.
First things first: love the story, I love the characters. I think they have great personalities. My favourite guy is Jayden, because he is different from others. Maybe it's because I like the bad boy attitude. I liked Ty because I can relate to him. He reads a lot, I read a lot. We're the same. Vince is awesome too. I love his jokes. I love the way he takes things lightly, with ease, always making jokes. Nate is the responsible one. I didn't really catch anything interesting about him, but I still like him alright. He's the kind of guy who I'd like to have as brother. Cayden is the sweatheart. At first I loved him, but he lacks attidude. It's obvious what his reaction to things is. He would be a great best friend, though. This guy would never let you down.
The storyline is good too. Nothing happens too quickly or too slowly. It was interesting to read it and I couldn't stop reading untill there was nothing to read anymore. Yeah, some things were obvious when they happened, but I was so stuck in this story that it didn't matter if I knew what happened next. And it was interesting to see how it happened exactly.
A thing that pissed me off was the boyfriend girlfriend drama. I get it, they were all young and all, but they over reacted every time something happened in their relationship. No one kept their cool. And damn was there sone bad adviced given, which made the situation even worse.
What annoyed me the most were grammar mistakes like 'then' instead of 'than' and 'your' instead of 'you're' also sentences where was used wrong tense. I thought that I'm going to lose my 'perfect' English to this book.
There were also some logic mistakes like when Demi tricked Jay and led him and Cayden to the basement and in Cams view she said that Demi had threatened them, which was impossible sence she wasn't even there yet.
Other than that I really liked reading that book. I also followed the writer in twitter. Anyway, I think the stories need some editing but are amazing.

This book was just alright for me. It did keep my interest and the storyline was very original. I do think teens would probably love it more than I did. The writing was a little too simple I thought. I had to laugh though - this was another YA book where all the parents were conveniently gone, so the teens could get into even more trouble. I mean what fun would it be to have all the parents hanging around watching your every move. Only this time to the author's credit - she actually wrote their absence into the storyline so there was a reason - thank you!

The character development was really pretty good. I had no trouble getting to know everyone, and thought everyone's character was pretty believable and very "teen like". I also thought they were all very likable.

"I don’t know how to explain how I am, what I am. Ever since I hit puberty, I’ve been different. I was thirteen when the changes started happening. I started getting incredibly fast and strong. It wasn’t normal. I wasn’t normal. I was turning into a freak. I could crumple a brick in my hand like it was a piece of paper. When I ran, I was passing cars on the freeway and that wasn’t even me running at full speed. When I was running at full speed I wasn’t much more than a blur to anyone else."

"I never understood how this happened, or why it happened to me. I thought maybe it could be genetic, but I was adopted so there was no way to tell. I guess I could have tracked my birth parents down and asked them about it, but I figured they didn't want me in the first place, so why would they help me if I told them I was a freak and asked if they were too? If they weren't like me, they would think I was crazy and probably have me locked up."

This was a fun and quick light read! It is a good teen read - no sex... and I can't really think of any swearing.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Twisted is a cute YA paranormal with a bit of mystery and a little romance. The story is told between the alternating perspectives of characters Cayden and Camilla. I enjoyed the chapters from Cayden's point of view a bit more than those from Camilla's. She's just not as essential to the story since all the mystery surrounds Cayden.

Cayden Rivers was adopted when he was an infant, and all he has from his birthparents is a pendant. When he develops supernatural speed and strength during puberty, he manages to keep it a secret from everyone, including his best friend Camilla. It's amazing really that he was able to keep the secret given the fact that he played sports. It's hard to believe he never lost control on the football field and snapped another player's neck.

The story centers on Cayden's road to discovering his past, and the reasons for his super powers. While there are some clues, a bit here and there, most of my questions were never answered. In that way, this book is more a prelude into a story than a complete story itself. There is a teaser for the next book at the end, so I guess more will be explained in the sequel. A slew of characters paraded through this novel, most never developed much at all, the exception being Camilla and Cayden. Sometimes I got a bit dizzy with the amount of jumping from scene to scene and week to week in the character's lives. On the other hand, that did make the story read faster and I was never mired down in unending descriptions.

I recommend Twisted to everyone middle school and up that enjoys a light, fun paranormal. Just be aware that Cayden finds few answers by the end of the book, so you'll be left wanting the sequel just to figure out what's going on with the powers.

I liked twisted. There are quite a few surprising twists to the book and others that I guessed where it was heading.
This is aimed at YA. Most of the characters are teenagers. The only parents we hear about are very disappointed ones. I wanted to shake and yell at them. I got involved in the book. This is a clean read. Their is way too much underage drinking going on.

Cayden is adopted. His sister Kylie is just months younger than him and is adopted too. Their adopted mom could not take her husband drinking so she left them with him. He is always drunk. Cayden finds that he has special gifts he is faster and stronger than normal. He is pretty good at hiding his talents. His sister does not even know.

Camilla is Cayden's best friend forever. Her parents are always traveling. She is lucky to see them at all. Dana Cayden's girlfriend is jealous of Cam. Camilla is tired of being alone all the time.

I can't wait to read the second book. I have lots of questions about some of the other characters in the story. How are they making their money. We really don't see much of Cayden's sister Kylie she is always with others.

Lots of drama, some action, some mystery, lot of relationships and special powers. It is entertaining to read and did not want to say goodbye to the characters yet.

I was given this ebook to read. The opinions are all mine.

Lifting was just another word I used when I was talking about practicing with my powers, like lifting things up.

Sometimes I wonder if authors even read what they've written.

I like superpowers but these kids are really two-dimensional. Lots of things in their behaviour are really annoying. I could not connect with them at all. They are totally overboard with the dramatic statements “I thought you hated me” and ruined relationships over some really juvenile stuff. It's also beyond predictable. I always felt like I was twenty steps ahead of the plot.
A lot of reactions and actions don't make any sense at all and the dialogue is TERRIBLE.

Cayden's POV isn't bad. I've definitely read worst.

Cam is Cayden's best friend. Cayden describes her as really chill but she actually is as possessive and controlling as his “psycho” girlfriend.

Kylie is probably the only one I liked. She is Cayden's adopted sister.

There were many annoying little inconsistencies or things that just did not add up.

I must admit that to me this book started out kind of slow. I nearly put it down as I didn't think I was going to be able to stick with it. But I did and am glad. Once it picked up I became invested in the characters a bit more.

Cayden seemed like a sweetheart, even though I think he was a little dense when it came to his love life. He did seem to mature in other ways during the course of the story though. He went from having to keep the largest part of his life a secret to being able to share it with his family and close friend. Along the way though he finds family he never knew he had as well as discovers new powers. He finds out that he may have enemies because of these powers, so it is even more important to keep them hidden.

I liked the relationship between Cayden and Camilla. The strong friendship and how they are both fighting feelings for each other that run deeper.

Even with the slow start, the book picked up and once rolling along kept up the speed. I would probably pick up the second book in the series as there is still a lot about Cayden and his family that remains a mystery.

The only positive thing I have to say about this book is that the story is slightly original.

I found it badly written and there were a lot of things in the story that don't add up to me

First of all, caydan is supposed to be kind hearted and caring and to love his sister, but he does leave his home to move in with his new brothers, leaving his sister who he is supposed to love alone with a drunk stepfather.

Secondly, his dad is a terrible drunk, and still caydan and his sister invite people over all the time. If my dad was like that I wouldn't want anyone to know (except maybe for my best friend)

Last but not least: his relation with Dayna, not denying she is overly attached, but i honestly can't blame her. My best friend is also from the opposite gender, but I don't go around sleeping on him. But apart of cam, did caydan ever cared about dayna? He never really seemed to want to be with her at all, just because he was the rugby player and she a cheerleader, don't think he had any other reason.

This book just frustrated me

It could have been much worse than it is. It also could have been so much better.
I liked the concepts being developed within the story. However, something about the writing just didn't bode well with me.
As well, there was such a huge build up, only for things to quickly end. I'm not a fan of that. But whatever, it was still a decent read.

Started out OK but after a few pages it got predictable, saw the villain and how things are going to get down between Cam and Cayden and the rest of the gang while I was 1/4th into the book.
And come on, Cam realizing his feeling for Cam when he was dying!? Totally lame IMHO
