The music of the wolves - the world's oldest symphony.
Ever since I read Farley Mowat's classic NEVER CRY WOLF, I've been fascinated with these beautiful, misunderstood animals. And I THOUGHT I knew quite a lot about them, so I was surprised at how much I learned in this little book.
Although this author's animal books are aimed at children, she never talks down to her audience. Instead she assumes (I believe correctly) that most children WANT to learn about things that interest them. By introducing little known facts and new concepts, she encourages her readers to expand their knowledge and to have fun doing so. What could be more satisfying to a child than learning something that most adults don't know?
I've always associated wolves with North America and knew that they were once common in Europe, but I had never heard of the Ethiopian Wolf or the Himalayan Wolf. I was astonished to learn that wolves are found living in more parts of the world than any other mammal, with the exception of humans. The information about wolf families and their complex social lives makes the reader feel how unjust it is that these intelligent and sensitive animals have been feared and hunted almost out of existence.
This is part of an out-standing series. They are thoroughly researched, well written, and the photographs are exceptional. What a great way to introduce a child to the beauty and wonder of nature.
