I wanted to like this book. Maybe I was just extra tired reading at bedtime, but it always felt so shallow to me. A great idea that could have gone very deep. But it was just so... then this terrible thing. Then this other terrible thing. No emotional quality and the characters we shallowly developed.

Couldn’t Put “The Locket” Down

I have read many, many WWII escape stories during the time of the Holocaust. Dr. Evans is a very gifted writer and I loved how he wrote not only about the main character’s many escapes, he wrote about her life into adulthood, weaving the creation of the State of Israel into the story, and the capturing and hanging of one of the most heinous murderers of the Jewish people during the Holocaust. The Locket is a read you don’t want to miss.

Fantastic historical fiction

I met Mike Evans on an airplane between Washington DC and Dallas. When I asked him which of his books I should read first, he enthusiastically recommended this one. It's a terrific story with a great plot line and I highly recommend it.

When I discovered that Mike Evans is a journalist, his writing style made sense of this book. He reports about a woman and her family in Austria; a fascinating journey into the hell of the Holocaust. There is particular focus on Adolf Eichmann and his role in her life. The details are all there, but for me there is something missing from the heart of the story. It's definitely worth reading, but not my favorite on this topic.

Great book. Tells a story with actual historical figures and events. Makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens to the lead fictional character, Sarah. The scope of events takes you from the early rise of Hitler to the hunt for Nazi war criminals. One of my favorite books in a long while.

The author has an educated overview of the historical accounts of WWII Germany, the Nazi atrocities, Jewish victims, survivors and Israel. I have enjoyed other historical novels on the same subjects a trifle better because there seems to be something missing on an emotional level in this book. Still, I appreciated it and would recommend it.
