Signing up for an expedition into the Arctic Sea seemed like an entirely reasonable idea. But when Thurston's ship becomes ice-locked in the harsh polar winter, he discovers one man aboard for whom even reason has its limits.
Interesting short story about survival of captain and crew on an expedition to Arctic with many twists and turns and a unbelievable ending, I could see this short story being made into a movie
i love Mr. Peterson's lyrical style and trademark dramatic humor. This story was not quite the equal of Barnabas Bead, and the beginning is a bit slow, but once we meet John Obadiah things pick up. The relationship between Obadiah and Thurston (ostensibly the main character) is pitch-perfect.
Hands down, though, the best line is the story is the last one. If there's anything Mr. Peterson can do, it's nail an ending, and this one's no exception. After everything that happened throughout the adventure, that last line made me gasp out loud. A perfect place, and way, to end a story like this one.
If you enjoy this story, definitely go back and read The Timely Arrival of Barnabas Bead. i'm looking forward to the next short in the series, too—a ghost story.
