An exciting adventure with helicopters!

I enjoyed Sarah Doran’s previous book The Peppered Sky and I was excited to read her newest book Sleeping Giants! This story rendered in deep twilight blues and colors of dawn pinks and golds shows how pilots began their ascent in Blackhawk, Apache and Chinook helicopters. The author draws inspiration from her own experiences as a helicopter mechanic. The end of the book features educational questions and activities to help students explore the topics of military aviation. Great for any reader whether they know a military family or grew up in that life. The language is comprehensive to readers of all ages.

It is so nice to see more childrens literature giving a look into military life, and having there be representation for military families. In this title, the author gives children a look into the life of someone who deals with military helicopters. The book is from the perspective of a little boy that gets to go with his mom to go see some of the military helicopters that she works on as a mechanic. He gets to imagine what it would be like to pilot these sleeping giants, and he even gets to go on a ride on them. Love that story gives a look into military life and has diverse characters in it! It is also really cool that the author was in the military and served as a helicopter mechanic!

We had a signed copy of this book. Once our family had thoroughly enjoyed it, we decided to share it with the MacDill AFB community by donating it to the on-base elementary school there. The library staff was delighted to receive it for their upcoming children's activities honoring the military and military children. The recommended activities at the end of the book were much appreciated by the library staff and would also be useful for homeschooled children especially those from military families. The text and illustrations are wonderful!
