A psychomanteum is a mirrored room that is used to communicate with the dead. It's also a spooky, Young Adult novella for teens. After a car accident, Niki is tortured by a recurring nightmare about a demon-like creature and a guy she's never met. Her senior year goes from bad to worse when, after a horrible breakup, her aunt kicks her out. With her inheritance she purchases an old house she feels a strong connection to. She stays despite paranormal activity, when she begins to find answers to questions that have haunted her. Psychomanteum's ghostly realism will have you believing. It's a good night to curl up with a spooky book...
This was short, too short. I'm not too sure how I feel about it. On one hand I kind of liked it, but it was so short that I'm not sure. And even though there wasn't tons of this, the church/Sunday school stuff made me kind of meh. I guess that with the fact that she didn't want alcohol at her party made it seem a little too christian-y for me. I stll sort of liked it but it felt too short to really know.
A good read but very quick ending. I would like to read more about Keith and Niki and get more of a substance to their story. Even though the title was about a room with a mirror in it to speak to the dead, that actually had very little to do with the book. Great concept just needed more "meat to its bones".
This is my first book by this author. It’s a YA novel but I still enjoyed it. Its two main characters are Niki & Keith. Niki is a senior in high school that has been living with her aunt ever since her parents were killed in a fire when she was a child. Her aunt is a miserable old wench & only tolerates her living in her basement because she does the lawn care, cooks & cleans. She learns a few weeks before graduation that her aunt is kicking her out to accommodate her cousin & her family moving into the basement because their new house isn’t ready for them to move in. Niki buys this house that she’s drawn to & got for a steal due to the second story not being renovated/updated. It has a barn & 10 acres. (Yeah I thought the same thing but it’s fiction so I just went with it). She meets Keith in a bar with her friends one night. Unbeknownst to her, they’ve met before a long time ago. He’s been watching over her since then. This puts her on a parallel path with Keith that changes both of their destinies.
So....wow. I stumbled upon this book on Amazon looking for a book with less than 100 ratings, for a book club I am in. To be honest I didn't have high hopes. It was free and had very little reviews. I was going in blind but pleasantly surprised how good it was!! I actually could not put my kindle down. Psychomanteum is a quick read about Demons, Ghosts and a dash of love. I was pulled in from the beginning and it kept my attention very well throughout. This story is full of twists and turns which will surely keep you wanting more to the very end. Speaking of the end, you will want to scream and throw a fit but then it ends up all being okay! I loved this book. The only thing I am feeling unsure about is the writing style. Majority of the book is written in first person with Nicolette. About 2/3's into the book it turns into a combination of first person and third person every other chapter. In my opinion, if you like supernatural themes, it is definitely worth the read!
A young woman whose aunt has turned her away, buys and moves into an old house that calls to her. The downstairs has been updated but the upstairs was left untouched. She learns unexplained things happened when contractors tried to work there. She also finds a cemetery with three small graves in her backyard. She also finds she seems to have a guardian angel helping her out. Well written and holds the reader's interest.
3.5 stars The book has elements of mystery, my favorite kind of mystery, where the protagonist can't remember things that happened to her. There were demons and hunters and a love story and it was all very enjoyable.
The book had a lot of potential but I feel like it fell just a bit short. My biggest wish was that the book was longer, like a lot longer. It was so short that it seemed to skip around and the characters didn't develop enough. I wanted more of the love story and more of the motivations of the bad guy. And a sequel would be nice. Basically the book left me wanting and sometimes a bit confused
This is one of those books that I know I will wish to be able to read again for the first time. I loved the story, I loved how the author connected everything, and I loved the ending. I don't even care that it was nearly wrapped up in the last chapter. This is one of those books that's going to be on my mind for weeks, if not months.
This was a really gripping story. I'm not usually into young adult books, but this one kept me entertained from start to finish. I could hardly put it down. I feel like more could be added to the story, so I would love to see a series from this book, and maybe even a prequel.
I know this is a novella because it says so, so I was expecting to read it fairly quickly. I thought it was a good easy read and always had something interesting going on. I think it's better suited for younger readers, but older people in their 30's like me can also enjoy it.
This is a cute but INTENSE story. Feim pretty much the beginning it had me on the edge of my seat. I hadn't expected it to be Christian faith based, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a quick read too. Very good
What an odd little book. There are demons that possess people and an angel (?) that exorcises them, or at least tries to. The main girl does dumb stuff. I mean, how can she trust so many people? The ending was a real eye opener, but made a lot of sense. I did like the story.
• I couldnt even remember the name of the book while reading, kept having to look 😭 • story flows fast and easy. straight to the point no huild up, but i still couldn't stop reading, was I interested??? • girl meets phantom boy no questions asked she wants to find him again and just immediately knows where and how to see him. • random side characters that just add dialogue not memorable to me. • learns of exorcist does one immediately on her students mom, who she ALSO just KNEW she was possessed. demon comes out boy comes in splashes water on demon and tells demon to blah blah be gone. demons goes bye bye • still intriguied, but why??? • boy and girl are both basically orphans • boy is in agreement with the demon who posessed girl. its all hush hush • Niki, Kieth, Syrus-characters • girl does dumb shit like shutting herself in an enclosed pitch black room with just a mirror...PSYCHPHANTEUM, a room she has nightmares about ..but yea lets go in. • syrus, the demon wants the girl,Niki, to be his queen...ok • girl and boy banish demon • girl "dies" comes back evil??? IDK UT JUST ENDED.... • 2 stars, the plot has great potential

After reading Laurel Veil's Fairy Godmothers are For Wimps, I wasn't sure how I would feel about switching to a whole other genre with Psychomanteum. In the blink of an eye, I went from a whimsical and fun middle-school story to a dark, brooding YA novel.
Niki has had a tough couple of years. Orphaned at an early age and nearly perishing in a car accident herself, Niki is about to graduate high school, and is evicted by her uncaring aunt. Establishing a new residence at an old house with a reputation for being haunted, she soon discovers that she has abilities that go far beyond the normal - apparitions of a mysterious young man named Keith haunt her, along with images of a terrible, demonic, skeletal creature ... and it's all connected to the house she now resides in.
Psychomanteum is a fast and enjoyable read. The story could have stood to be a little bit more fleshed out, but otherwise, a very good read. Can't wait for Part 2!
Ugh... Don't even get me started on this... Oh wait, too late already. This book was WAY too short to the point where it jumped around and had no flow. Nothing was explained so it actually made sense. It almost seemed like a sequel than a stand alone book. The action just sucked. It wasn't even scary, and I don't know if that was because I had no idea what the hell was going on, or if the descriptions sucked. Seriously, the author should have taken more time and fleshed the story out a LOT more. The book could have been something good and seriously scary, but it just fell flat.
This was a neat little book. Semi-dark, definitely YA, and much too short. I'd love to have the author either come back to the characters with new books or revise this one to make it meatier, darker, and...well...just more. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would and I hope to see more like this book from this author.
This was a creepy ghost story sure to please YAs. There was a lot of action, but some of it was a bit confusing as past and present were woven together. There could have been more character development, but the characters themselves were interesting.
