I was disappointed with this book. Though it promised strategies for integrating AI into the classroom, I found the "strategies" to be fairly generic and common sense. The most helpful thing was the HAIL model - Humanize, Augment, Integrate, and Leverage - for integrating AI into the classroom. A major gap is that the book failed to address some of the challenges of AI, such as the fact that it reproduces information even if the information it finds is incorrect or dated. In chapter 5, it suggests that students can use AI to generate text, answer questions, and more. However, students have already figured that out, and can use AI to avoid writing and answering questions themselves. Educators have to help students understand strengths and potential limitations of AI and help students use it to assist but not do their work for them.
Great topic, but simply full of buzz words, big picture educational language, and no specific dive ins to any AI platforms. Super general and not helpful if you are a teacher needing practical advise. If you are smoking a pipe in your office debating the merits of AI with a state school board member just for kicks…this is the book for you.
I kept hoping for something concrete that would support AI integration I.n a meaningful way, but the book glosses over any specific strategy. The HAIL model is helpful but outside of that, the lesson ideas are too vague to be helpful.
