A fun and introspective story of a woman losing and then finding herself as she walks the Camino pilgrimage trail in Spain. Toby Neal, Author of Freckled and The Paradise Crime Series
It’s a long walk from betrayal to freedom.
Jasmine wants a baby. Her husband wants her best friend. As a writer of romance novels, Jasmine’s professional world is steeped in happily-ever-afters. Isn’t she entitled to one, too? After playing by the rules and doing everything right, how did things go so very wrong? As her ‘perfect’ marriage crumbles, Jasmine is desperate for a time-out.
With nothing left to lose, she grabs a backpack and sets off to walk 500 miles across Spain on the ancient pilgrim route, the Camino de Santiago, in search of answers.
Feeling vulnerable and afraid, she has a rough start, but the Camino soon begins to work its magic on her. When she meets a man who sets her moral compass spinning, Jasmine is confronted with more decisions. He’s available, but is she?
With help from a surprising, mystical source, Jasmine’s healing journey takes on a life of its own, challenging all her beliefs about life and love.
If you liked Pilgrim and The Way my Way, you'll love this fiction account of hiking the Camino de Santiago. Perfect for fans of Camino fiction and non-fiction, and other long distance hiking books.
I liked Camino Magic. After a more demanding previous read, I was in the mood for something straightforward, sweet, and ultimately uplifting, and this book delivered exactly that.
I've read many memoirs and autobiographical accounts of walking the Camino de Santiago, but I believe this is my first fictional take on the experience - other than the Martin Sheen movie, The Way. While I wouldn't quite say walking the Camino is on my bucket list, in some alternate version of my life where I can take six weeks and travel to Europe, I would love to make that journey more than once.
The protagonist begins the story highly regimented, emotionally rigid, and, frankly, not especially likable. But that's also the point. She is a woman in need of change, and the pilgrimage becomes a journey of self-discovery as much as a physical trek across Spain.
There weren't many surprises here, and that's perfectly fine. Sometimes a story's strength lies in watching a character slowly open herself to new experiences, new people, and a new way of looking at life.
And the ending? Happy, of course. Sometimes that's exactly what a reader needs. I will be reading the other two in the trilogy.
Angela Leslee's Camino Magic is a thoughtful and entertaining story of growth, change, and reinventing oneself. I love long-distance treks and enjoyed following the main character, Jasmine, along her Camino journey through Spain (something I would love to do myself one day). The story is very character-driven as we walk with Jasmine not only on her physical journey, but along her emotional and spiritual journey as well. She leaves behind a broken marriage, an estranged relationship with her mother, and a confusion about where to go next in her life. But walking the Camino is a magical experience and opens her eyes to a new way of looking at the world, and herself. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good adventure, and anyone who wants to be reminded that there are ways to walk through the dark times and come out on the other side with hope.
I live on the Big Island, as does this author. I also work in the local bookstore. The author is visiting our store next month and so I thought it was time I read a book of hers (I can only read so many)… I smiled at the first few pages… Husband cheats on wife with her best friend, wife finds out via a nude pic of her husband sent to her by her bfs husband… I wasn’t too hopeful. However, within a few more pages the magic began to work and I was hooked. This was a great story with just the right amount of spirituality and several vibrant characters that i really liked! This was the first I had ever heard of the Camino Santiago and if I were younger I would be planning a magical trip to Spain. Finally, I am always fascinated with how authors bring a good story to a conclusion and no spoilers here but the ending is done oh so well! Love the book, great read. Thank you.
