Twisted An Anthology of Dark Humor brings together a wickedly talented group of writers who explore the sharp, shadowy edges of humor. From the sinister to the surreal, these stories twist familiar scenarios into darkly comedic gems that will make you laugh, wince, and question your sense of humor. Featuring contributions from Brian Bowyer, Clarence Carter, Patrick Barb, Paul Lonardo, Michelle Dornish, Wayne Fenlon, Sarina Dorie, Emily Smith, Joseph Shane, Dave Does Cambodia, Ryan T Jenkins, Ria Hill, Donna Marie West, Cheryl Zaidan, and Gregg Chamberlain, this anthology dives deep into the human psyche, showing just how absurd, and sometimes horrifying, life can be.
Full disclosure, I have a story that appears in this anthology. But I'm basing this review on the other stories.
And what fantastic stories they are! There's a lot of great talent on display here with authors I've read previously and others for the first time.
There are tales in here that are bloody, brutal, creepy, and disturbing but they all have a humorous tone to bring a fantastic mix of horror/comedy.
A talking garbage disposal, cannibals who crave the flesh of babies, a serial killer who meets an infatuated fan, and even a story about Santa Claus and zombies! Plus many more.
And that's the thing which really stands out in this anthology; the variety of subject matter means you'll never find yourself bored with the same thing. Each one is different and told from various perspectives.
This is one you'll definitely want to read for some bone chilling terror with laughs along the way. I highly recommend it.
I suppose before I do this review, I should address the bias. I have a short story in this collection called Black-eyed Children. I try to read all of the anthologies I’m in because… well I love horror stories. The combination of comedy and horror is such a tough thing to do and a lot of the authors in this collection nailed it. It’s a small book, so if you’re looking for a quick read with some laughs this is the book for you.
Okay, I have a story in this anthology, but I don't want that to get in the way. This was a great read. So many writers I haven't heard of, and I am pleasantly surprised at the quality of their work. Truly. I'll be sure to check out more based on this alone. I really hope this one helps them get the exposure they deserve. Hard to pick a favourite here. Congrats everyone. You've done yourselves proud here.
