God I am completely FERAL for vicious scheming husbands who are completely devoted to and love each other above all else.

“What is a young master like you doing here”—Xiao Chiye lifted a finger and ran it lightly across the tip of Shen Zechuan’s nose—“all alone in the rain?”

Shen Zechuan spread his little bamboo fan to show it to Xiao Chiye. He sounded a little sulky as he said, “My fan’s dirty.”

A few splotches of blood marred the open fan, like red plum blossoms spilling over the inked words.

I loved that this installment furthered all the political maneuvering going on, as well as expanding the world and different regions and their importance, and moving different chess pieces on to the board, while removing some other pieces in some truly shocking twists.

Trying to remember everything that is going on while waiting between installments being released is a bit of a struggle and I read this with the character map firmly in hand so I could keep track of who was who and what their relationships were to each other. Did I know what was always happening? Honestly no…. but you tend to pick it up with context clues pretty quickly, so I don’t have any major gripe with that.

I continue to maintain that this is possibly a challenging entry point for people who are new to Danmei but there is no mistaking the fact that this is one of the best political romances I have read and features impressive layers of court intrigue, plotting power plays, drama and high stakes.

I have my heart in my hands still over that picture 2% in of Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechuan in bed together

“This place is too small,” Xiao Chiye whispered. “The view of the sky is blocked by vermilion walls, and the mountains and plains are hemmed in by cities—Snowcrest can’t run to his heart’s content. Someday, when we return to Libei, I’ll take you riding through the Hongyan Mountains.”

Shen Zechuan rested his head against Xiao Chiye’s chest. “Is the moon in Libei as round as the moon in Duanzhou?”

If we have learned one thing from QJJ, it’s that grain is important 😬. Chess pieces are moving all over the place now and we get so many private sweet and tender moments between SZ and XC.

The map is crucial as well as keeping up with which clans are associated with which prefectures. Take notes!

I really don’t have any complaints about this translation like I was worried about initially 🙌

4,5 'Ce'an and Lanzhou being murderous together' stars

Rated S for SPOILERS!!!!

Couples' goals and all that - Cezhou decide to carve their own path from now on and they won't let anyone to stand in the way of their goal. But before we move to the more dramatic parts of this volume, I have to first fangirl about how adorably domestic they are.

"This place is too small," Xiao Chiye whispered. "The view of the sky is blocked by vermilion walls, and the mountains and plains are hemmed in by cities - Snowcrest can't run to his heart's content. Someday, when we return to Libei, I'll take you riding through the Hongyan Mountains."
Shen Zechuan rested his head against Xiao Chiye's chest. "Is the moon in Libei as round as the moon in Duanzhou?"
Xiao Chiye answered only after a long pause. "I've already forgotten. Is the grass in Duanzhou as tall as the grass in Libei?"
"I've already forgotten."
They burst into laughter, dispelling that cloud of melancholy. Shen Zechuan breathed in Xiao Chieye's scent as Xiao Chiye pressed his chin against the top of Shen Zechuan's head.
"Let's go together," Xiao Chiye said.
"Home?"
[...]
Xiao Chiye looked down on at him. "As long as we can get out of Qudu, we'll go together, even to the ends of the earth."

Just look at them, they couldn't be more married if they tried. I still almost can't believe we're only on vol 3 and they are already such a power couple. I love me some slow burn but this is so much better! I really love how they are stronger being together. They are always there for each other - when one of them is feeling down, the other is always there to pick him up. They mean everything to me!!!

"Er-gongzi's braids are so prettily done. Truly a cultured man of many talents."
"This Er-gongzi has had plently of practice," Xiao Chiye teased in return. "Aren't Snowcrest's little braids pretty? I plaited all of them."
"I put my heart and soul into saving up for a betrothal gift," Shen Zechuan said, "yet you think me the same as Snowcrest?"
Xiao Chiye bent lower and jested into the mirror. "A horse, hm?"
All sorts of expressions danced in Xiao Chiye's eyes. Pressed tightly like this, back to chest, Shen Zechuan remembered the last time they'd ridden the horse on that rainy night. Although the marks of those love bites no longer lingered on his smooth neck, it blushed nearly as red when Xiao Chiye whispered into his ear.
Shen Zechuan lifted his chin, exposing the exquisite curve of that neck. It shone like the crescent moon in the dim light: softened by shadows, innately smooth and lustrous.
He whispered, "Am I?"
Xiao Chiye fell under his spell. His lips brushed the corner of Shen Zechuan's eye, then curved in a smile as he stared at the man in the mirror. "How could I bear to think so? You are the master of me. I only want to take you riding."

I'm going totally crazy over them. Their flirting is 10/10. Xiao Chiye being all flirty and playfull, while Lanzhou is blushing like a virgin and at the same time seducing Ce'an like a pro. Also, 'you are the master of me' line. OMG!! Why is no one talking about this?! Xiao Chiye is so gone for his Lanzhou, lucky bastard. And as I said before that I love them as a couple - this is what I'm talking about. I think that a lot of authors put the 'officially getting together' at the end of the novel to keep the relationship interesting, but being a couple doesn't mean the end of love. Cezhou are together and they still flirt, they still banter, they are still lovey-dovey with each other. And they fuck like every day is their honeymoon, lol.
Between them, there was no setting aside the cups after taking a sip of wine; there was only drinking to their hearts' content. They were desperate for true and undisguised desire, and could only find it in each other. They craved the headlong rush of their bodies clinging to each other in bed - first the storm, then the gentle rain. All their worries could be washed into oblivion by their mutual passion.

Fanart by szaszkeh

I'll come back to fangirling about cezhou but now for intermezzo: plot-wise some big things happen. Xiao Chiye (and to extent Zechuan as well) is accused of murdering the emperor, which leads to both of them fleeing Qudu. I was very happy for them to finally get out of that toxic place but they both paid a very high price. Xiao Chiye lost a friend, and no matter what happened between them after Li Jianheng became emperor, I think he still cared about him. As for Shen Zechuan, it was even more horrible. He hadn't had much family to begin with, so when Qi Huilian began mentoring him, I think Zechuan considered him like kind of a part of his family. He was even prepared to part from Xiao Chiye and stay in Qudu to continue searching for his shifu and mentor. Therefore, loosing Qi Huilian must have been a huge blow for him.

"Why not overturn this rotten sky and earth and create a world you can call your own? Lanzhou, go. Don't look back. Xiansheng will shoulder the burden of those thirty thousand wrongfully perished sould on your behalf. Don't be afraid. Have--"
Han Cheng's blade sank into flesh, and Qi Hualian's blood splatered in the rain. He toppled onto his back; gazing at the steely clouds overhead, he murmured, "Have no fear."
Thunder shook the skies. Shen Zechuan fell to his knees.

At least his last words might do something good for Lanzhou, who has been stuck in past for too long. His memory of Chashi Sinkhole is like a prison from which he wasn't able to escape.

Xiao Chiye galloped out of Qudu, countless soldiers of the Eight Great Battalions in pursuit behind him. [...]
"I'm no longer willing to lay down my life for this cause." Lu Guangbai closed his eyes. Blood trickled down his fingers and soaked into yellow sand. [...]
Rain had washed the blood on Shen Zechuan's cheeks away. Sobs of grief escaped his throat. In this sorry escape, he'd forsaken all his past obediance to those who held power over his life. [...]
They were all prisoners on the run from fate. They had once been willing to stay shackled. But the rainstorm had toppled the great edifice of the state, and its collapsed debris rushed toward them like floodwater.
Lu Guangbai's voice rang over the desert: "I want to scale that mountain. I'm going to fight for myself!"

We haven't seen much of Lu Guangbei yet but I'm curious if he'll have more prominent role in the future volumes. And if he might even join cezhou in their plan. Alright, back to my precious babies! There were so many scenes of them together that I loved. And if you know me, then you know that I love to see my beloved charachters in a 'break them and watch them glow' kind of way.

Xiao Chiye drew Shen Zechuan into his arms.
"Are you cold?" Xiao Chiye whispered.
After a sluggish pause, Shen Zechuan nodded. He turned his head, pressing his cheek against Xiao Chiye's. The heat of it breathed the warmth of the living into him. He reached out in darkness to stroke Xiao Chiye's arm around him, feeble and slow.
Xiao Chiye flipped his palm and found Shen Zechuan's hand, interlacing their fingers. All the warmth in him, he gave to Shen Zechuan.

Shen Zechuan tried to turn his face aside, refusing to let Xiao Chiye look at him, but Xiao Chiye's grip was iron as he asked once again, low, "What did you want to say?"
Shen Zechuan's face was pale under his gaze. His lips parted several times, but couldn'd bring himself to speak. Xiao Chiye gazed at him steadily. It seemed an endless time later when he finally heard Shen Zechuan sob, "It hurts."
Stroking Shen Zechuan's hair, Xiao Chiye wiped his tears with his tumbs. "Where does it hurt? Tell me."
Shen Zechuan broke down and wept, his shoulders trembling. He was overwhelmed by his grief, as though venting all these years of anguish in one night. [...] He numbly let Xiao Chiye wipe his cheeks as fresh tears brimmed in his eyes.
[...] The fabric at Xiao Chiye's chest was gradually soaked through. He caressed Shen Zechuan's hair, answering again and again: "It won't hurt anymore. I promise. Lanzhou will never hurt again."

Yes, this was so sad 😭😭😭 However, I think it was also an important part of their relationship. Lanzhou decides to be completely vulnerable with Xiao Chiye, and trusts him that he would be there for him and take care of him. They are together in good and bad, and there's nothing that can pull them apart.

"I've given up enduring in silence." Shen Zechuan rested his fan on his knee and turned slightly to gaze at Xiao Chiye. "I'm choosing another way to fight. [...] One day, we will gallop together under the skies of Libei, and thta will be when I've become strong and powerfull. Two million isn't enough to take away the wolf pup of the Prince of Libei. Such a bethrotal gift is not worthy of my Xiao Ce'an. If I'm in Zhongbo, I will one day become your indestructible shield."
[...] Under the soft veil of moonlight, Xiao Chiye grasped Shen Zechuan's hand and pulled him into a fierce embrace.
After a long time, Xiao Chiye's hoarse voice rumbled beside Shen Zechuan's ear, clinging close. "I'll leave my back to you, and you'll leave your chest to me. We cannot do without each other. I'll choose the best horse in Libei for you. We'll build a house on the demarcation line between Zhongbo and Libei and meet there - every month. If you want to marry me, two million silver isn't enough; I want Lanzhou's priceless smile, far dearer than a thousand gold."

Fanart by XIAN

I have nothing coherent to add because just look at them!! I'm in love with how much they are in love with each other. They are so sweet, they are hugging, Xiao Chiye actually asked Lanzhou to marry him!! The 'priceless smile' comment 🥰🥰 And, I have to mention how Xiao Chiye is usually very possessive of Shen Zechuan, always touching him or something, but Lanzhou is equally possessing just in a different way - calling Xiao Chiye very informally in front of others, and staking a claim just the same. And he callled him MY Ce'an 🥰🥰
Also, anyone else thought of CaPri and the "I mean that we hold the centre. We hold everything from Acquitart to Sicyon. Can we not call it a kingdom and rule it together?" moment, or was it just me?

Gifs by Milla

This is how I imagine they look at one another like they are each other's whole world. I'm surprised that at this point there are still people, who don't get that they are together. (They are as subtle as cenzorship in Fangs of Fortune, lol)

Inexplicably, Shen Zechuan started to laugh; it was the most unbridled mirth he had let out in years. He sheathed his blade and picked up his folding fan, stepping on Leo Changming's head to nudge it upright.
"Dance, huh?" Shen Zechuan lowered his lashes and said to Lei Changming,"Are
you even worthy?"

Gif by zhuoyes

I almost forgot to mention this epic Shen Lanzou's moment. Don't we love when our boys get all bloody and murdery 😏😏 It's just a shame that Ce'an missed this scene. Otherwise, he would be all over Lanzhou in a second, well even more than usual, haha

Allright, let's wrap up this review before I ran out of charachters. Some more cezhou for the end and, of course, necessary sexy times to finish the volume. (I found out they break the streak in vol 4, Moni sad.)

"Don't I reek of sweat? Why are you still sniffing me?"
Shen Zechuan wiped at the sweat on the side of Xiao Chiye's neck with his fingers, then snuggled against his cheek. "Start running."
Hitching him up on his back, Xiao Chiye answered, "Too tired to run."
"If Er-gongzi can't do it," Shen Zechuan pinched Xiao Chiye's cheek and teased, "I'll take the lead tonight."
Xiao Chiye pretended to put him down. "Sure. hop off. Er-gongzi will see how you plan to carry me back from here."
Shen Zechuan tightened his arms around his neck. As he lifted his legs higher along Xiao Chiye's ribs, he said with a mock solemnity. "Why get so fired up over such a small thing? Go on, I believe in you."
[...]
Clinging to his back, Shen Zechuan edged his fingertips down along the lapels of his jacket, peeling them apart as he whispered into his ear, "What can't Er-lang do? Er-lang can do anything."

As they kissed, he pulled at the ribbon Shen Zechuan used to secure his hair. The kisses left Shen Zechuan gasping for breath, and he reached behind him to feel for the lock.
"No key." Xiao Chiye lifted Shen Zechuan against him slightly. His face pressed in close, and he looked hungrily at Shen Zechuan. "We can't get in."
Shen Zechuan's heels slid down along the back of Xiao Chiye's waist, but he raised his hand and pressed a palm against Xiao Chiye's approaching lips to stop them in place. He whispered, his breath hot in Xiao Chiye's ear, "Well, I suppose if we can't get inside,
you can't get inside."
Xiao Chiye pried Shen Zechuan's lips apart and lowered his head to swallow that teasing tongue.

"No. Don't. I-inside the room."
But Xiao Chiye took this
no as a reply to his question and thrust forward, almost making Shen Zechuan cry out on instinct.
"What can't Er-lang do?" Xiao Chiye held Shen Zechuan firmly in his arms and lifted his chin so they were eye to eye. Ruthless and wicked, he said, "Er-lang can do anything."
[...] Sweat drenched his clothes, and Shen Zechuan gradually grew breathless. He pressed his forehead to Xiao Chiye's chest, dizzy, as the waves of ecstasy crashed over him. It hadn't been an hour, yet he'd already surrendered twice.

Now, I just need to impatiently wait for the next vol to arrive in my hands. I must get my cezhou fix!!

Xiao Chiye lowered his head and pressed his cheek to Shen Zechuan's as he stared with deep hostility at the sunlight attempting to creep across the sheets toward Shen Zechuan.
Shen Lanzhou belonged to him - Xiao Ce'an.

Life partners depend on each other both in public and in private. Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechuan have slowly been developing a relationship of trust throughout the first two volumes, but in this third volume of “Ballad of Sword and Wine” by Tang Jiu Qing, they tip into emotional intimacy. Previously, they have been physical but not intimate but now they are at a point where they understand each other so well that they can work together both inside and outside the bedroom.

This volume intricately weaves together the machinations of court intrigue with the complicated nature of Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechaun’s relationship. On the surface they are adversaries as leaders of the Imperial Army and the Embroidered Uniform Guard but beneath the surface they begin to work together. They are very aware of their behaviour in public so when they are waiting before Mingli Hall to see the emperor, “The two of them maintained an appropriate a distance – not too far, not too close” (p. 129, chapter 86). However, in private their gestures show that they have a close relationship, because small gestures show their devotion to each other. Even while discussing politics, “Shen Zechuan let Xiao Chiye comb his hair for him” (p. 162, chapter 89). By combing his hair, Xiao Chiye is declaring his love in a non-demonstrative way. It is a domestic habit that shows that they are close although Shen Zechuan does joke that Xiao Chiye is braiding his hair the same way that he does with Snowcrest, his horse (p. 163, chapter 89). This is an astute observation, because Xiao Chiye did begin flirting with him by trying to tame Shen Zechuan with the same technique that he used on his gyrfalcon and white steed.

Both men find themselves in a precarious situation at the court of Qudu, which results in a coup and a struggle for the imperial throne. Xiao Chiye chooses to walk into a trap because of his friendship with the emperor. This results in a violent escalation where Shen Zechaun comes to his rescue and Xiao Chiye ends up fleeing the city. He had been held as a hostage in Qudu for the last six years to keep his father and older brother in check in Libei, but now he escapes with the help of Shen Zechuan’s Embroidered Uniform Guard having his back. It is quite a touching scene, because just as he has cleared the gate, he looks back and shouts, “Lanzhou, come with me” (p. 241, chapter 96). He has just achieved his freedom but also wants the love of his life to come with him.

Shen Zechuan is, however, trying to free his teacher who has been kidnapped and so he is not in a position to go with Xiao Chiye. They both know this; it is a desperate choice. Xiao Chiye can run for freedom, but chooses to return to the city and help Shen Zechuan. This speaks volumes. Xiao Chiye has sensed that Shen Zechuan needs his help and is willing to sacrifice his freedom for him. They end up leaving the city together, having saved each other.

They flee to Zhongbo where they foil a plot by bandits but are also outwitted by Lei Jingzhe whose ruthless nature allows him to escape their well-laid plans. This adventure is an excellent mixture of unexpected twists and turns as well as exciting battle scenes where there is something at stake on both a personal and political level. The events unfold on the backdrop of Libei’s struggle to remain independent and Xiao Chiye’s desire to return home to his family.

As all of these events unfold, “…the Imperial Army had gradually discovered the subtle and delicate relationship between the two of them” (67%, chapter 100). Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechuan no longer feel the need to hide the true nature of their relationship and so it is on full display for those who have eyes to see. At the very end, Xiao Chiye even tells Kong Ling who earlier had tried to send him a pretty maid to tempt him that, “I have no intention of taking a concubine in this life” (93%, chapter 112) and just in case he was not making himself clear, he added, “Shen Zechuan … is … the head of household of my – Xiao Ce’an’s – future residence.” Not only does he state his intention to marry Shen Zechuan, he emphasizes it by using his courtesy name “Ce’an” instead of his given name.

“If you want to marry me, two million silver isn’t enough; I want Lanzhou’s priceless smile, far dearer than a thousand gold.”

They make me feel things.

This is my favourite volume so far. The starting 30% or so was really confusing as these books often are but after that everything started making sense and I finally got to see the bigger picture of all their plotting of the first two volumes. There were a lot of tender moments between the two. I love just how much they understand each other and their goals. They don’t need words.

Also, Xiao Chiye is my new favourite character.

Xiao Chiye was the wind sweeping over the meadow to assail the turbulent river of Shen Zechuan’s heart, offering him a taste of the sweetness of love.

Xiao Chiye subtle possessiveness is making me so giddy, like im screaming into my pillow i just cant contain my happiness. I'll never get tired of saying this, but Xiao Chiye is one of my favorite male leads of all time.

I don’t know how I’m supposed to wait another five months for the next volume. The temptation to read the fan translation is so real 😭😭😭😭

I’m Obsessed with This Series!!! I’ll be honest. After reading Book 2, I started reading online for a bit. So, I’ve already gone through some parts of this volume, but for some reason, I just couldn’t finish it. Maybe it’s because I love reading on paper more than reading online. But after finally diving into the physical copy, I’m hooked all over again. Now I wanna hunt down an unofficial translation and keep going because this series is soooo good. I’m all hands down on this one—it’s easily one of the best danmei novels out there. I’m honestly so bummed that this is an 8-book series, and we’re only at book 3. At this pace, it’s gonna take at least a year or two for the whole thing to be released, and I don't know if I have the patience for that!

One thing I really want to mention—without spoiling too much—is how complex the characters are, especially the villains. There’s one particular antagonist who’s honestly tough to dislike because his actions stem from a desire to dissolve discrimination. It’s heartbreaking because, despite everything, his motivations come from a place of wanting change. It just makes things so much more emotional and complicated knowing he's on the opposing side. This kind of layered storytelling is what makes Ballad of Sword and Wine stand out. The moral grayness, the intricate power plays, and the way every character feels so real—it’s just incredible.

If you haven’t picked up this series yet, you need to. The writing, the world-building, the relationships—everything is top-tier. It’s an emotional rollercoaster with political intrigue, romance, and tension that will keep you turning the pages. I seriously can't wait for the next volume, but in the meantime, I might just go back and reread my favorite parts because I can’t get enough of it.

“We’ve embarked on a path of carnage; we don’t need to be clean anymore. As long as we’re together.”

i loved seeing the murderous side of shen zechuan, he may be a bit morally grey but its OKAY❤️

the map is definitely essential to understanding everything but once you get the hang of it its kind of fun. i'm definitely curious about lu guangbai! so far i really like his character

4.5/5

the plot is absolutely delicious - intricate court politics, backstabbings and betrayals, plotting and scheming, this is my jam!! plus i love when smart protagonists are up against equally smart and formidable opponents. xiao chiye and shen zechuan really went through it in this volume, but the way they rose up to be each other's unwavering support was so beautiful to see. i love seeing well-written established couples, especially when they have to face all manner of conflicts together.

this is honestly shaping up to be not just one of my favorite danmei but one of my favorite novels ever period.

Those two seriously need to explain their cuteness. It should be illegal.
I just finished, and Ce'an at the end glaring at the sunlight is giving Binghe 🤣

The first about 30% of the book I was not exactly bored, but felt like plot lost momentum, and I wasn't sure where we were going. Again, it wasn't bad, just slow. But I guess it's probably a consequence of reading it split apart into volumes: I think, if I was reading it right after vol. 2, the momentum would have carried me over. Because after that... ooofff! Action never stopped actioning, and there were some major scale epic scenes in this volume.
Also I thought at some point that the MCs were too smart and everything is too easy for them, but oh boy, was I wrong.
I think most of the iconic moments I knew of before starting the series were in this volume.

And Cezhou are so wonderful here. The fake enemies stuff, the tenderness, the desire, I'm screaming. The last chapter just made me squeal. Ce'an is fully on the hubby-acquiring quest, what army, what politics.

dawg this volume was an emotional rollercoaster and i loved every moment of it

i LIVEEE for cezhou being a morally grey power couple!! like yes slaughter your enemies together!!! decapitate your enemies and then have a romantic moment the very next second!! we love to see it

that being the said the plot was DEVASTATING. it felt the first half of the story truly was the calm before the storm, which is saying something cause it wasn’t calm at all. the illustrations only serve to enhance the story and were AMAZING!! the artists are really out here feeding us well

despite how long it took me to read this volume compared to the others, i found that i was able to keep up with and enjoy the story just the same!! easy 5 stars, im so excited to see more! <3

I loved this one for pushing everything that was going on, as well as expanding the world and the different regions and their importance, and moving different pieces onto the board, while removing some others in some really shocking developments.

Trying to remember everything that was going on while waiting between parts was a struggle and I read this one with a character map in hand so I could keep track of who was who and how they related to each other. This can be a challenging entry point for those new to the BL genre but there is no mistaking that this is one of the best political romances I have ever read and it has many layers of palace intrigue, power struggles, drama and high stakes.

This is the best volume so far. The first 30% or so is really confusing like other books but then things start to make sense and we finally get the big picture of the whole plot of the first two volumes. There are a lot of tender moments between the two. I really like how they understand each other and their goals. They don’t need words to understand what the other is thinking.

Another volume stuffed FULL -- to the brim -- with action. I'm wondering when, if ever, Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechuan will catch a break as this mystery person(s) pulling the strings ceases to let them cuddle and cozy up to each other for too long...

It seemed as though every time they uncovered someone in Qudu's court sabotaging either them or the throne, another crisis would arise and another unknown assailant would slip out from their grasp. Truly, there's no rest for these two. The constant piling on of the deepening plot gets pretty heavy as it goes along, and trying to keep track of every official or military persona who happened to collude with someone else is getting really tricky for my short-term memory. And that's only me trying to keep track of names & faces or places. The really tricky part has been keeping up on the ~whys~, what is this person's motivation for doing what they're doing, who are they angry with, what benefits will they reap from this action? I'm just trying to stay afloat at this point, but despite some minor confusion here and there this volume does not disappoint with plot development.

***spoilers***
Li Jianheng??? My boy??? I was just getting attached to you??? I think I went into a state of shock and thought I had skipped a few pages or something because honestly that attack came out of NOWHERE. I was just getting to know him and like his character, especially since we were given so much of his internal thoughts about becoming emperor, and his constant worries over who was going to try to kill him and how he could possibly ever appease everyone around him to keep himself safe. It's like the author painted a target on his back and said yup, that anxious voice in your head saying someone's coming for you? It's right. And if his death weren't enough of a sudden plot jolt, Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechuan's immediate flight from Qudu had me turning pages like I was fleeing the palace myself. Xiao Chiye had been dreaming of Libei since the get-go, leaving behind his prison, but definitely not like this. (Heart clenches as Shen Zechuan tells him to "go home" and leave him behind to save himself...which of course he doesn't). Every volume has one or two scenes that I know will stick with me every time I think back on a series, and those chapters covering the emperor's murder and Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechuan's escape will assuredly be the ones I remember the most.

I thought that after this climax, the plot does continue moving forward, but it felt much slower due to having to reaaalllly take my time (almost on a sentence to sentence level) since we're moving outside of a familiar setting and into places, interacting with people, that we hadn't been narratively introduced to yet and only heard of as background info in previous scenes. I really had to stop and think...okay, I recognize this name vaguely, let me jog my memory for a second to remind myself...The map and character guide is critical for the second half of this volume. But I am glad to have the world opening up more.

Once again, the romantic development in this volume slaps. It's a little comical that every time Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechuan get a *moment* to themselves, they're still preoccupied with gossiping about various political figures and strategizing their next moves. Clearly men who mix business and pleasure. But absolutely nothing can compare to Xiao Chiye proudly declaring his unofficial marriage to Shen Zechuan by naming him head of their future household. Excuse me while I swoon.

AND DING TAO SAVING THE DAY. Feeling blessed that he got a big moment to shine in this volume. I knew he was my favorite boy. Still is.

“Xiao Chiye usually avoided fish, too impatient to pick out the bones, but now that he tasted it from Shen Zechuan’s chopsticks, he found it to be acceptable.”

Now as a danmei fan I have cried over many things I never thought I’d cry over, but I’ve never cried over a man feeding another man some fish. The fact that Shen Lanzhou picked out all of the fish bones so he could feed Xiao Chiye some fish AHHH. Now I’ll always thinks about Cezhou when I’m deboning fish.

Last volume I called it that Li Jianheng would die soon, but I did NOT think it would be this soon. Here I thought this was going to be his third close call with death but no he’s actually dead now. Poor Xiao Chiye.

“Shen Zechuan broke down and wept, his shoulders trembling. He was overwhelmed by his grief, as though venting all these years of anguish in one night. Yet he was so foolish; he didn’t even know where he was hurting—only that he couldn’t endure the pain any longer. He numbly let Xiao Chiye wipe his cheeks as fresh tears brimmed in his eyes.”

It’s been dozens of chapters since we last saw Shen Lanzhou cry. I was not ready for just how much he broke down after his shifu’s death. At least he has Xiao Chiye who he can share his most vulnerable side with.

“If you want to marry me, two million silver isn’t enough; I want Lanzhou’s priceless smile, far dearer than a thousand gold.”

“‘I know. I’ll do as my wife says.’”

The flirting? The classic wife line? Yea I am seated for the rest of the volumes. Give me all the Cezhou moments I could possibly need.

Lastly, I must address my favourite scene. It was when Shen Lanzhou straight up decapitated that freak Lei Changming and then proceeded to mock him while stepping on his head. That’s my MC right there. Classic Shen Lanzhou cutting people down with a weapon and words. And can we talk about how after this murder Xiao Chiye offers to make a new fan for Shen Lanzhou since his current fan is now bloody? That’s a man who loves his wife.

Not Li Jianheng…no…my Shayla….my Shaylaaaa.

Nah but other than killing my boy, this book is so fucking good. It is one of the only books where I am routinely outsmarted by the author. Like damn.

4.5 stars rounded up

This was wonderful. The relationship between Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechuan develops another layer of intimacy here. The former has always been more demonstrative in his affections, but in here Shen Zechuan's protective layer shatters. It's the culmination of a series of heartbreaking incidents, but was done so beautifully. And beneath it, we finally start to see the depth of his own affection.

This is a very plot-forward series. The cast of characters is plentiful, and I'll admit I did at times find myself having to bounce back and forth in the text to remember names and context. But the overall story is captivating. The author moves the plot forward at the perfect pace, introducing twists and uncovering secrets organically.

I truly love everything about the leads, together and apart. They are such a powerful couple, and equally supportive of each other's ambitions. They have already come so far, and I'm excited to see how much more they'll grow.

“Xiao Chiye lowered his head and pressed his cheek to Shen Zechuan’s as he stared with deep hostility at the sunlight attempting to creep across the sheets towards Shen Zechuan. Shen Lanzhou belonged to him— Xiao Ce’an” (395).

Being jealous of the sun is crazy work. However, I have to hand it to him. He locked this man down within two books, which by danmei standards, is earth shattering. It took Xiao Chiye some time to figure out what he wanted, but once he did, he stopped playing around real fast. They’re practically domestic in this book, which is nice considering that everything else fell to pieces around them.

The one good thing about being framed for the emperor’s murder is that they’re finally out from under Qudu’s heel, and Xiao Chiye is going back to Libei. After six years as a hostage, he’s going home. Also, I never liked Li Jianheng. After all that Xiao Chiye did for him, he instantly turned his back on his friend and barred him from the one thing he wanted most. He was selfish, a terrible ruler, and a worse friend. I’m not happy he’s dead, but I am a little.

Really enjoyed reading this. Got a bit mixed up in a few places, but the overall strength of the characters and romance between the main couple kept me going.

Had a hard weak and ironically was relaxing from having a bit of a breakdown right when I got to reading the part where one of the characters in this volume did which I think is a but sad and hilarious lol. I'm okay not but boi oh boi are re reads of this volume going to get interesting in the future.

The mystery element of what exactly is going on amd did happen are turning out very interesting for me I just hope the stpry manages to find a satisfying conclusion to it.

Would a hundred percent reccomend this somehow seems to be an underrated Danmei which when I've heard so much about it even before I read it seems a bit strange to me. But maybe tahts just me. Either way can't wait until the next volume comes out.
