The Leap Year Proposal

Rate this book
Three women. One crazy hen weekend. A life-changing decision.

When three women meet on a mutual friend’s hen weekend on the Scottish island of Arran, they get more than they bargained for when one of them has the genius idea of proposing on 29 February, like the age-old Irish tradition.

High-flying businesswoman Anouska and boyfriend Zach are deliriously happy and madly in love. If only they had more time together. But now she’s pregnant and doesn’t know how to tell him since having kids hadn’t featured in their plans.

Dog walker Jess lives with her childhood sweetheart, but they’re already like an old married couple, without the romance, or the wedding, or the ring. When Mark doesn’t propose on New Year’s Eve, Jess is gutted and decides to take matters into her own hands.

Ellie and Scott still live apart after six years, and his lack of commitment is a sore point. She’s up for a huge promotion which involves moving country. It’s make-or-break time. She needs to know he’s worth turning down the job for.

The women meet weekly, helping each other with decisions big and small, becoming each other’s support system in the run-up to ‘the big ask’.

Will love conquer all or will their hopes and dreams come crashing down around them?

One Liner: Pretty entertaining and thoughtful

Three women – Anouska, Ellie, and Jess are in different stages but seem to have an issue in their personal/ love lives. Anouska and Zach are happy but can her surprise pregnancy fit into their high-flying careers? Ellie has been with Scott for six years with no progress in her relationship. With a potential promotion on the horizon, she needs to decide what’s best for her. Jess has been in love with Mark forever. They even live like an old couple sans the marriage part.

When Jess decides to take matters into her own hands and propose to Mark on the leap year day (29th Feb), it inspires Ellie and Anouska to take action about their love. But the road to HEA is filled with doubts and decisions.

The story comes in the third-person POVs of Anouska, Ellie, and Jess.

My Thoughts:

Based on the premise, you might have guessed correctly that this is more of women’s fiction and less of romance. Though we have three couples, the focus is on the various aspects of a relationship, the intricacies, the missing red flags, the passivity, doubts, fears, etc. There are some lovey-dovey scenes but the steam is 0.5 at the most. Nothing explicit or detailed.

The three main characters are different in many ways. The age ranges from 24-35, their careers are different, the family dynamics are different, and the relationship troubles are also different despite the common factor.

Though it may seem like marriage is the ultimate goal, it’s the intention behind this that is emphasized. The characters want worthy, reliable, and loving partners who are not afraid to commit to them (especially after being together for many years).

The main characters are not friends from first but bond quickly. Their scenes together gradually shift from surface-level friendship to becoming each other’s found families. I really loved this progress.

Naturally, there is drama in each track but nowhere does it get confusing. The conflicts are different enough to prevent overlap but too dramatic.

The story takes place in a couple of months, so some aspects are put on a fast track. This may or may not fully work for everyone. I didn’t particularly mind since I guessed that’s how they would proceed.

We get an epilogue to tie up the loose ends and close the story on a happy and hopeful note. The pacing is a bit slow in the first quarter but gets better in the second half.

To summarize, The Leap Year Proposal is an entertaining read with some thoughtful themes and ideas about relationships. Though it is about love, the book celebrates female friendships.

Thank you, Rachel's Random Resources and the author, for eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

When Anouska, Jess and Ellie meet at a mutual friend’s hen weekend they bond really quickly and even though they are very different it feels like they have been friends for years. The girls decide to propose to their partners on the 29th February as it’s a leap year, is this the best idea or is it the worst plan ever?
Fun, poignant in places but a truly heartwarming and romantic read that made me realise everyone needs “gal pals” to support them.

Three women, Anouska, Jess and Ellie meet on a mutual friend’s hen weekend on the Scottish island of Arran. They enjoy one another's company and decide they will meet up weekly when they return home. During one of their get togethers, they decide to take their future love life into their own hands. They are going to follow the ancient Irish tradition of women proposing to the man they love on February 29th. With the leap year coming up, they decide to plan their proposals over the next few weeks. As time moves on, things don't play out as they planned. Can Ellie and Scott, Anouska and Zach and Jess and Mark become married couples or will something happen to derail the proposals and weddings?

I enjoyed The Leap Year Proposal and all the characters. The women were all so different. Anouska is the owner of her own business, who travels a lot and is living with Zach who owns his own cafe and restaurant. They are both extremely busy, and I'm not sure how they ever had time to spend together. Jess lives with Mark who she has known since they were in school together. They are best friends and their relationship has gotten a bit stale. Jess is an instructor of yoga, pilates etc. and is also a dog walker. Mark is often busy with his job as a teacher and Jess is worried about their relationship after she begins to enjoy the company of another man. Finally Ellie and Scott who have been together for six years, but still live separately and don't see a lot of one another. Scott is a lawyer, and Ellie works in PR and is working hard to get a promotion. The story is told from all three of the ladies' POVs over several months while they plan their Leap Year Proposals. There are a lot of secrets along the way that could derail everything they are working toward. This is an enjoyable story about friendship, relationships, honesty, following your dream and maybe finding love and your soulmate. I recommend this one to those who enjoy a good romance.

I love romance, and it's a treat to have three tied into one book, along with a little tradition that they decide to see through.
Three women, strangers to one another, all in relationships but very different situations, meet at a mutual friend's hen weekend and, for whatever reason, decide that they will all propose to their partners on February 29th, as it is a Leap Year, and the woman proposing on that day is an age-old tradition.
Split into three POVs, the story follows Anouska, Jess, and Ellie over a couple of months as they build their friendship and experience the trials of planning secret proposals.
The thing is, nothing is going to go smoothly, is it? Especially when there are little secrets, doubts and confusion in the mix!
I read this story in about one day, thoroughly enjoying each woman's story. I also loved the blossoming friendships that developed throughout the book.
Another Scottish-based book makes me want to visit all the more!
Many thanks to the Author and Rachel's Random Resources for providing an ARC

Why wait for the proposal?

Anoushka, Jess and Ellie meet at the hen weekend of a mutual friend. And even if they didn’t know each other before, there is an instant connection and the three women become friends. They are all in a relationship, and when the idea of a leap year proposal suddenly rises, all three start to think about proposing to their partners. But can it all be that straightforward? Because Anoushka is a successful businesswoman, flying all over the world. And her boyfriend Zach is building his own empire in the hospitality sector Being busy is an understatement, and they don’t always manage to spend a lot of time together. But now Anoushka is pregnant, and she doesn’t know how to tell Zach, as children were never part of their plans…
Jess and Mark are childhood sweethearts and are living together for a while now. But it seems that the passion has gone over the years, and Jess feels that they have become an old married couple. Especially when on New Year’s Eve, Mark doesn’t propose as Jess expected, makes Jess wonder if perhaps she needs to take matter in own hands.
Ellie meanwhile has been together with Scott for six years, but feels a lack of commitment from his side. Not only is there absolutely no talks about going to live together but also the prospect of Ellie’s promotion and a required move makes her wonder where her future may be.
The run – up towards that last day of February, the three friends find the much needed support, encouragement and help with each other. But will they all have the finale they were hoping for?

I like it when women take matter in own hands, no matter what the occasion may be. And while it is tradition for the pan to propose to the woman, why cannot it be the other way around?

The story evolves around three women, Anoushka, Jess and Ellie. I loved it how these women are very different from each other, yet they connect very easily during a hen weekend.
It shows that sometimes you don’t need to know each other for many years to build a genuine friendship with someone.

As the three main characters are very different, it also gives them the perfect change of perspective. This new friendship gives each character the chance to see what is lacking in their relationship, or (and perhaps that is even better 😊) what the strength is.

I cannot say which character I liked the most in this book. I admired Anoushka’s strength and her ability to adapt to the big change in her life. But on the other hand I was a tiny bit angry with her, as she isn’t able to tell her partner Zach about her pregnancy. And we all know that procrastination, especially on something this important, is a bad idea.

Maybe with Jess I was the least sure about the idea of the leap proposal idea. Jess says it herself, she loves Mark, and they have been together for years. But is a proposal the best way to get the excitement back in your relationship? And perhaps with a new arrival I was worrying that things would take a turn for the worse, as it seems that there is an instant connection?

And then there is Ellie… For me, it felt like she was in the saddest relationship of them all. Because she wants to move forward with Scott, but it’s clear that he doesn’t feel the same. To make it even worse, at least in my eyes, was that Scott only agrees with going forward when he can gain something from it. Nope, not a fan of Scott at all here, and while I was in one way happy to see my suspicions getting right, it saddened me to see how it all evolves for Ellie…

While the story’s premise is about three women proposing their partners as it’s leap year, this story is so much more than just a way to pop the question. Because we see three different women, in three different relationships, at three different stages in not only their relationships but also in their lives. And they are all at a crossroad, doubting which direction they should go with their lives.

Yet beside the doubts and many questions crossing the main characters’ minds, the bond they have found with each other is what truly stands out. Because they find each other, they find real friends. Despite the short period they have known each other, they have found support, comfort and strength with each other.

And that is the force of this book, and the talent of Susan Buchanan, because she always finds something special with each character, with each storyline. This is a story about three normal people, with a special plan in their minds, but most important, they find special people to share everything with. And that is an invaluable something!

I absolutely loved reading this book, as it made me laugh, it made me sad and it even made me angry. But most important, it made me just feel happy with the outcome for each character!

Assuming you’ve read the synopsis, you already have the gist of the story. In short, it’s the story of three women who decide to take control of their own lives and propose to their boyfriends on Leap Year Day. The three women meet at a wedding and quickly bond over their shared desire to walk up the aisle.
Of the three, I particularly liked Anouska and her relationship with her partner, a chef named Zach. They are both focused on their success and have jointly agreed that they don’t need any grand commitments and have no desire for children. I completely understood her position, as I was never maternal until I suddenly was. Not only does she not tell Zach, but she doesn’t even let the other girls know.
Jess and Ellie each have vaguely differing situations, but neither of their partners has managed to inspire confidence in a commitment to the altar. Having agreed to also take the leap of faith, they set about planning their grand proposals. I had mixed feelings about their partners and wondered how Susan could get to the happily ever after that I expected.
As the juggernaut that was their agreed plans of action gained momentum, the three stories held my attention, and I was hooked. I certainly couldn't have guessed how the conclusion would arrive, but I was thrilled with it.
Susan Buchanan has written a fantastic book that has become one of my favourites, and I’m already looking forward to her next offering.
I just loved this story and can confirm that despite having already helped with the beta reading, it was even more enjoyable the second time. I read so many books that beyond the basic theme, I had no recollection of what happened which was a real treat.

Susan Buchanan - The Leap Year Proposal

The Leap Year Proposal is a glorious stand alone story from accomplished author Susan Buchanan.

At a mutual friends hen do, three very different women come together. They quickly realise that it’s more than just a friend that they have in common.
All three are in relationships, and with their respective partners being a little slow off the mark to propose, Anouska, Ellie and Jess take matters into their own hands and plan to take control with their own leap year proposals.

As their plans come together, this could be the best thing they ever do, or at worst they will at least learn where they stand with their respective partners.

Will it be three yeses? Or will no one be visiting the bridal shop any time soon?

I truly loved this book. I loved the romance and the strength and solidarity of female friendships.

I liked all three women and I was completely invested in them finding their happily ever afters.

Susan Buchanan’s solid writing style flows effortlessly onto the page. With plenty of twists and turns, she keeps us all guessing and turning those pages.
I wanted to get to the end, but equally didn’t want the book to finish.

#TheLeapYearPropos is a thoroughly enjoyable read and a wonderful place to lose yourself for a few hours.

Romantic, uplifting, heart warming and great fun.

If you aren’t familiar with Susan’s writing, do yourself a favour and check out her books. You won’t be disappointed.

While this work is advertised as a romance, I'd honestly just call it fiction (or I guess women's fiction, though I'm not a fan of that genre name).

There were a few things I quite liked about this one. I loved how different but similar the three protagonists were, and how their friendship evolved over the book. I liked all three women, and they were written well so it was easy to keep them apart. Despite the work focusing on similar goals for all three of them, their relationships and the conflicts that arose were dissimilar, making all three plots feel well-balanced and relatable.

The work does start off slowly, but it doesn't take too long for the pacing to find a good speed. I appreciate that there were some times the author introduced an element and I was sure it was going to go in one direction, but instead it was resolved in a surprising and more satisfying way.

Overall, if you're looking for a slower general fiction focused on relationships, then you may enjoy this one. Thanks to Srivalli for bringing it to my attention!

What an absolutely lovely read. Who doesn't like to just grab a cozy book and enjoy the idea of love and proposals on leap year! I really liked the three person point of view that this book offered. There was something quite enjoyable about seeing the three women hatch their plans, work together to help them come to fruition and then seeing as the day approached, for each of them. The changes in perspective also kept the reading fresh and easy flowing.
I really liked the different characters throughout this book, as they each were unique and had their own things happening in life and their own way of looking at the world.
I really enjoyed how the author brought everything together. It was all kept fun and light hearted, though true to real life, not everything went to plan, which I also liked as it kept it more down to earth.
The pace of the book was great, as it flowed nicely and really just made for a very enjoyable read. I really liked it.

Three individuals meet during a hen weekend, one idea could change everything.

Buchanan writes three strong female characters who all want love and commitment, and what better way to get it than to take it into their own hands?

This novel is told from our three main characters' point of view, I loved the depth of each character's back story and how they were all challenged with their own dilemmas.

I couldn't pick a favourite as they were all so different, but I also enjoyed how the friendship with these characters flourished.

This was a quick, easy and cosy read, which any romance lover with enjoy.

I love this book from reading the first chapter. When I realised the chapters were about each of the three main characters in turn, I always had to read three in a row before putting it down. I am not a fast reader but I was hooked and only took a couple of days to read it.

I enjoyed how the woman's friendships blossomed. Each woman had a different story and each was enjoyable. The end was not what I was expecting but may be that was just me but I loved how it ended.

I will read more of Susan's books in the future.

This is a sweet read about love, commitment, and unexpected twists. It’s a sweet and hilarious tale of three women who propose on Leap Day, based on an old Irish custom.

Anouska’s a power businesswoman, head-over-heels for Zach, but she’s struggling with her surprise pregnancy. Dog walker Jess is tired of waiting for her boyfriend to propose. Busy Ellie has to choose between her job and Scott, her not-so-serious boyfriend. Facing their own problems, their friendship helped them both get to the big moment: the proposal!

The characters are what makes this novel so good. The characters are so real, you’ll feel their joys and sorrows. Their relationships are genuine, full of life’s ups and downs. The friendships formed among the protagonists are heartening, highlighting the importance of support systems in navigating life’s uncertainties.

This story is insightful and fun; it explores love, communication and self-discovery.

Overall, The Leap Year Proposal is an uplifting read that will appeal to fans of contemporary romance and women’s fiction.

Three women are ready to take charge in their relationships and want to ask their boyfriends to marry them rather than waiting for them to ask. To make it extra special they want to propose on February 29th. I was caught up in the three ladies lives and their relationships. This is a perfect romcom to enjoy in the middle of winter because it makes you feel warm. The book is set in winter but it still feels like a ray of sunshine when I read it. I loved how these women became friends and supported each other throughout the book.

A great read, grabbed me from the start and held my interest to the very last page.
The trials and tribulations of love, life and family for our three leading ladies. Anouska, Ellie and Jess, who found friendship when attending a mutual friends hen do. The story follows them through their relationships both with their other halves and also each other. Will leap year proposals bring them their happy ever after or does fate have different ideas.

A great story of three ladies with very different lives, who meet on a mutual friend's hen weekend and become close friends.
After one of them decides to propose to her partner on the 29th February and the others decide to follow suit.
There are highs and lows, ups and downs, sad and happy moments. There is plenty to keep you wanting to carry on reading as the story develop.
Anouska, Jess and Ellie's lives are very different but the threads are deftly woven together with a secret and some surprises.
Highly recommend this book.

4,5 stars:
I love how I have seen Susan's writing improve over time. This story is a really good one, mainly about friendship, but also with some romance.

We follow three main characters and their relationships ups and downs. Anoushka, Jess and Ellie are new friends, having recently met at a mutal friend's hen weekend. Although they are new friends, it is really heart-warming to see how they end up being there for one another. The 3 girls are living completely different lives, but still have so much in common and they come to play such important roles in each other's lives.

This story was thought provoking, but also sweet and I smiled a lot and was really invested in their stories and could not read it fast enough.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, strangers really do make the best of friends.
After recently visiting Edinburgh I loved the familiarity of some of the settings.
Three ladies meet at a friend’s hen weekend and keep in contact when one wants to propose to her boyfriend on the 29th February.
Friendships developing and getting insights into their relationships and how they develop kept me reading, more drama and complications along with some happy ever afters and karma made for an unputdownable novel.

These three ladies , who met at a mutual friend’s hen weekend and bonded together over their decision to propose to their other halves as it’s a leap year are great fun to spend time with.
They all have different things going on in their lives and it was fascinating watching them work through their relationship challenges.
Some unexpected moments kept the story going and made it difficult to put down!
It was uplifting to see the ladies come together and support each other too.
It was a fun and entertaining read, and I loved how the story was all wrapped up at the end.

A lovely book - 3 women, a new friendship between the three of them, a pact and 3 potential proposals. I love the story of women taking the reins in their relationships but it maybe not quite going to plan.

A great book about relationships with friendship being the most important one. I loved this and will read more from this author.
