This is a book that concerns internal monologue & character motivations rather than a concrete plot. The plot beats are treated in a fairly detached manner which I think is intended to illustrate the psychopathic (possibly sociopathic, I can never remember the difference) tendencies of the unnamed narrator. This structure took me a while to warm to but once I got used to it I found it suited the premise. I think anyone interested in a more traditional mystery or even crime novel might be disappointed but I (eventually) enjoyed this unique approach to the fringes of that genre.
Book club book: I enjoyed this more than I thought, very thought provoking. The concept was really interesting and the way they came up with the ‘natural murders’ fascinating. It lost me a little towards the end I felt like there was very long passages about unrelated things and then he just married the Manager.
If not because of the finale is too plain for me, I would rate it more than just 3.5. I love the main character’s profile and the plot twist was also surprising. Just the ending parts are still ‘floating’ (my own term XD)
