Warhammer: The Horus Heresy - Legions Imperialis

Warhammer: The Horus Heresy - Legions Imperialis – The Devastation of Tallarn

Rate this book
The war which unfolded upon Tallarn in the middle years of the Horus Heresy was on a scale almost impossible to assess, a year-long conflict of ceaseless battle across a thousand fronts, where entire Titan Legios were broken and Imperialis Auxilia regiments rendered extinct.

Contained within this 128-page hardback book you will find a comprehensive history of the Devastation of Tallarn and the Fall of Sapphire City, key events in the vast and nightmarish Tallarn campaign. As well as detailing the Loyalist and Traitor forces which took part in these engagements, this book features new Formations and Detachment Data Sheets for both the Legiones Astartes and Solar Auxilia Army Lists.

This supplement book presents a full campaign system for linking Legions Imperialis battles together, including Breakthrough Campaign rules where you can take the fight right to your opponents' strongholds, and an expansion to this system allowing players to fight the battles for the Northern Desolation. The book contains rules for fighting Legions Imperialis battles in the dense toxic fogs which shrouded the battlefields of Tallarn, allowing you to bring this wartorn planet's intense and choking environments to life on the tabletop. You'll also find rules for Spearhead games featuring unique missions for massive armoured columns – ideal for representing the unusual conditions on Tallarn.

This Legions Imperialis campaign book focuses on the massed tank battles of the Tallarn campaign, including background, campaign rules and missions, alongside rules for new units and formations. The book also has the usual nice enhanced photography and artwork typical of Horus Heresy sourcebooks, even if most of it is reused from previous publications.

After an introduction and timeline of the entire Tallarn conflict, the bulk of the background section details the events from the initial Iron Warriors invasion to the fall of the Sapphire City and is accompanied by some nice maps of troop movements, and images of the planet itself before and after the Iron Warrior’s virus bombs. This lore is quite interesting for me as I haven’t got to the Tallarn part of the Horus Heresy novels. I also liked the little pieces of lore on units involved that are scattered throughout the book, as is usually the case with Horus Heresy sourcebooks.

The Campaign rules in the book seem quite good, covering Warfront campaigns (basic points based campaign), and Breakthrough campaigns (where armies go backwards and forwards along a batte line until they can attack their opponent’s stronghold). In addition to this there are additional campaign rules for campaign rosters, experience points and Battle Honours that units can earn, all of which are quite good. There are also the interesting Fog of War special rules that replicate conditions on Tallarn. As well as the campaign rules, there are also the more genera Spearhead Spearhead Assault Battles, three Missions created to represent typical tank heavy battles, all of which are look nice.

The new formations and units in the book are all tank focused. The four Formations of Legend (the Iron Hands Seeker Killer Clave Ultor, the Iron Warriors Proioxis Marco-Assault Wing, the Alpha Legion Harrow Group Arcadus, the Tallarn Reborn Carmine Ambush Tercio and the Gilibed Oathsworn Thyreos Siege Breaker Company) all seem quite interesting, and make me want to collect them. The generic Formations also seem quite good with the Legion Heavy Assault Spearhead being my favourite as I am a big fan of Terminators. In terms of units, the Legiones Astartes and Solar Auxilia getting some nice additions including Legiones Astartes Tank Commanders and Solar Auxilia super-heavy tanks such as the Shadowsword and the Stormblade.

Third Legions Imperialis book, expanding the ruleset and adding some new armour options and Formations of Legend. Not essential, but interesting.
