And there, standing on one of the tree roots sticking out of the ground was a male. There he stood, a few feet away from me with a calm composure and big smile on his face. His light brown hair was tousled about as if he had gotten out of bed and his eyes were warm, giving off the same euphoric vibe as everyone else I've met since I died. This man, standing in front of us in a white button up shirt and pants, was taken by surprise at our arrival...this had to be my soulmate. Our eyes locked and we were frozen in the moment. There he was. The man I was meant to be with but never even had a chance to meet on Earth. This was my soulmate. And yet, I felt nothing.

Such a great quick read. While the beginning of the story initially left me confused, I was immediately drawn in by the writing. Diana Mooney does such a great job conveying the emotions, scenes, and characters in this book. So, while Ava's emotions and things are complex, it was so easy to get consumed in the story. There's no spice that I recall in the story, but there's definitely some intensity in some scenes.
Ava is a young woman that just passed away, and is greeted by Maybelle, her guide into the afterlife. Immediately she has questions and wants answers, but they seem to evade her. Though she is definitely gone, she notices that the couple of people she has met are undeniably happy with their situations and have no emotions other than contentment, but she doesn't. She seems to have all of her emotions, and doesn't comprehend why. Maybelle, her guide, won't tell her anything, and until she finds out that she has a soulmate, she's on getting answers that she's not sure she wants the answers to.
Malachi has been gone for some time now, but since his first greeting with his afterlife guide, he hasn't seen the guy or heard anything that might suggest he is doing the wrong thing. He's always been a quick learner and knows that his emotions aren't something that is normal. Ava is introduced as his soulmate, and he's not sure what to make of her until she confides in him and asks if he has emotions, too.
Eventually, Malachi is able to get him and Ava back Earth side, but trouble ensues, and Ava has to decide if she's going to risk it all for someone that she doesn't know, but is supposed to be her soulmate.
If you read this, you will not be disappointed. I can't wait for the next book.
This is a wonderful book. The MC is definitely someone people can relate to in some, if not all, ways. I’m not religious, but this is a a good view on what the afterlife could entail and I will definitely read it again. Can’t wait to get my physical copy. Love the story, the cover, and the author for making it happen. Great job Diana! Excited for more!
We all have different views on the afterlife and what that entails. This debut author gave us her story of Ava's afterlife journey. I truly enjoyed this take on it. Finding your soulmate in the afterlife. I felt the characters were well rounded and it was very well written if a bit confusing at first. Once I pushed through I loved it.
A solid first book, the premise was interesting, exploring the life after this life. I thought Diana did a good job taking what feels familiar to most people about what we believe in about what happens to us after we die and putting her own spin on it.
I think the idea of soulmates meeting after death is an interesting take on the word, because it’s the soul that goes on, not our bodies. So it truly is the mate to your soul.
A good twist with the girl’s name and who she turns out to be.
Minor theological difference but most people have that. 😄
Tis is book 1, in the "Souls" series. This book was Good. This book was interesting. Good view, of the afterlife.short and interesting, wonderful characters, and entertaining. Going to read, her next book.
If you're looking for a book with an interesting plot, and not your typical "fated mates" trope, give this book a read. The author takes an interesting twist, and spin on the afterlife. The writing is phenomenal, and fast pace. I could not put this book down.
The author sure knows how to express the emotions she wants to get across. I found this book somewhat hard to get into, for my liking. It will well written and a quick read.
Try is book was a bit different but I did like it once I got into it. I think it was a different portrayal of the afterlife. It’s not my usual story but I loved the cover!
