A new dark, transgressive story from Splatterpunk Award nominated author Matthew Vaughn that is not splatterpunk, nor an extreme horror book!
Description-
Thomas deals in VHS tapes, buying and selling. When he comes across an unlabeled tape, he eagerly puts it in his VCR to see what treasure he might have come across. What he ends up watching is a tape that becomes his obsession, and takes him down a strange, dark path.

“I've heard of it before, cursed tapes. If you really think it’s cursed, maybe you should destroy it then. Break the thing and throw it out, then it can’t have any power over you.”
I’ve always been a huge fan of Matt’s work. The man can tell a hell of a story in a way that a lot of people can’t. I’m used to his extreme horror or splatter style books, so when he approached me with this one and told me it wasn’t extreme, I was actually really excited to try something new from him. 🙌🏼
SexTape DELIVERED!!! Matt can do transgressive horror really fucking well. Like, binge read in one sitting, even though I’ve been in a reading slump well. 🤌🏼 It’s still unhinged AF, and written in Matt’s tone / pacing / style etc—but gives so much more as well. It’s dark and it’s fucking weird. But again, in the best way possible.
The plot is absolutely fantastic, and there’s some solid body horror along with the entire thing just being an absolute mind fuck. This book actually has me really excited, and I do plan on harassing TF out of him to write more stuff like this. It was an absolute love for me and something I’d recommend to essentially everyone! 👏🏼
A man named Thomas enjoys collecting VHS tapes. It’s part of his obsession. Whatever he doesn’t want to keep he sells to bring in some income.
After buying a box of tapes from an old woman, he finds a blank tape. He inserts the tape into his VHS player and finds a very particular type of tape. It’s a snuff film that may or may not contain an otherworldly person.
After watching it repeatedly he becomes more obsessed with the girl from the tape. He sees her everywhere and thinks about her constantly.
One night he runs into this girl whose name is Amelia and things get weird and crazy quick. Will he get to experience the same thing on the tapes? Or is he imagining everything?
Matthew paints a fever dream for you. There is no escape from this book. The minute I started reading it I had to finish it. The only thing missing for me was a more in depth explanation of what was actually happening and why. I enjoy his writing and I will be reading more by Matthew.
For reasons I can’t begin to fathom, there is a market for old VHS tapes. This is a real life phenomena. Collectors and people who just have an affinity for old media actively seek out VHS copies of their favorite movies of the VHS era. I remember seeing an old acquaintance looking for (and later trying to sell) old movies. I live in south Texas, where there is no guarantee that old heat sensitive media would still work, so this never made sense to me. I would never buy VHS at a thrift store because there’s no way of knowing whether it was stored properly.
SexTape is the story of one such collector/reseller. Thomas likes to buy boxes of random VHS tapes at garage sales and thrift stores hoping to find treasures. Even if he doesn’t find something valuable, he still manages to flip almost everything. Every once in a while he finds an unlabeled tape in the box. It’s usually home movies. A sex tape, if he’s lucky. There’s a market for amateur porn. One day, he takes home a box of tapes and finds an unmarked one that will change his life. It is a sex tape, but it’s unlike anything he’d ever seen before. He becomes obsessed with the tape, watching it repeatedly examining all the details. And masturbating, because it’s a sex tape. But he’s disgusted with himself because it’s dark and depraved. The girl might be underage, and the things she does turns a simple sex tape into a gruesome snuff film.
Thomas destroys the tape, thinking that’ll be the end of his unhealthy fixation. But then he starts thinking he’s seeing the girl in public. Is he imagining it or is it really her? When he buys another box and finds another unmarked tape with the same type of content starring the same girl, he realizes there’s something much bigger than he realizes going on. And there’s no going back.
I am a reader with simple needs. When Matthew Vaughn says he has a new story coming out, I read it with gusto. He writes disgusting and bizarre situations that set my imagination ablaze. Vaughn is really showing his range here. You probably know him from his more extreme titles like Bowery, House Call, or The Sexorcist, but it’s becoming clear that he is not a one trick splatter pony.
We have a tape collector who buys and sells on tapes. Usually when he finds one that isn’t labelled it’s a sex tape. In his latest batch of tapes he does get one that’s not labelled. But this is different. He becomes obsessed with it watching it over and over and he thinks he sees the starring girl.
When he told me this wasn’t like his others he was correct. But that doesn’t make this any less of a book! He’s shown he can right near enough anything and make anything a decent story! He’s quickly becoming an instant buy author for me!
I love the found footage trope, but I have never read one quite like this. The writing was good and I liked the storyline. This is one of the better extreme horror books that I have read.
Matthew Vaughn’s SexTape channels analog nostalgia to deliver a haunting psychological horror, focusing on the unsettling effects of obsession. Deviating from his usual splatterpunk style, Vaughn crafts a slow-burning, character-driven narrative that draws readers into a dark, introspective journey. With a hypnotic pace and a chilling atmosphere, SexTape explores fear and fixation, making it a compelling read for fans of psychological horror and transgressive fiction.
Calling all my fellow dark transgressive fiction fans! You will absolutely want to add this one to your TBR.
SexTape follows Thomas. Thomas buys and sells VHS tapes. One day, he encounters a mysterious unlabeled tape and is eager to watch what this tape may contain. Little does he know that this tape will quickly change his life. Illusion or reality? A mindfuck in other words! Grab it. You won't be disappointed.
This story is an absolute labyrinth. It takes the idea of cursed tapes and astroprojects to another dimension. WHAT is happening! This is definitely different from his other books but somehow maintains the Vaughness! As always, it’s probably not for everyone, but holy crap is it good.
One thing you can count on after reading a Matthew Vaughn book is that you'll ask yourself, "What the f did I just read?" when you're finished. You know you're going to get a story so disturbing, graphic, gory, horrific, and vile, and I'm here for it. Sextape is a story about a man named Thomas, who buys and resells old VHS tapes. Sometimes he comes across tapes that have no label, usually contain recorded shows or home movies. However, what he discovers in his latest box was far from what he expected. As he kicks back to watch what's on the tape, it quickly leads him down a path of a dangerous obsession.
