Harbor of Spies #1

Spark of the Revolution

Rate this book
A spark ignites a flame that could burn down everything they hold dear.

Contrary to her name, Patience Abbott has long felt unsettled and anxious to leave behind her painful memories in England for a fresh start in America. But her new life isn’t quite what she expected, and as tension grows in her new home of Boston, so does the distance between Patience and her estranged father. So when Josiah Wagner walks into her life, it finally feels like she’s not alone. If only his patriotic leanings didn’t put him at odds with her father’s loyalties.

Josiah Wagner has spent his life yearning for a true home and family, something he works toward each day, forging tools as a blacksmith, and each night, forging plans with the Sons of Liberty. But when the destruction of tea in Boston Harbor lights the spark of the Revolution, Josiah finds himself drawn into its tumultuous wake, pulling the woman he loves along with him.

As tensions mount, will their search for belonging lead to each other, or will the obstacles between them be too great to overcome? In a land on the brink of war, can they find the home they seek in the One who calls them His own?

Christian fiction set in the American Revolution? Sign me up!

Spark of the Revolution is a wonderful beginning to a new series. Authentic history, realistic struggles, and heartwarming characters come together in a rich, uplifting tale of courage and faith. Soja brings the tension of colonial Boston to life through characters who face hard choices about what they believe and what they’ll risk for it.

As the title indicates, the Boston Tea Party is considered by many to be the “spark” that lit the fuse of the Revolution. But that fuse was in many ways a slow burn, and this story shows that well, both in the romance and the narrative tension. Josiah and Patience are so sweet together, but there’s much more to this story than romance. It has its share of sad moments, and it’s not, for the most part, a fast-moving story. But the pace fits the rising tension of Johnny Tremain’s Boston, which is painted in vivid historical detail and the perfect smattering of period dialect.

This story doesn’t shy away from the complexity of colonial politics, and we see first-hand the variety of loyalties, attitudes, and beliefs that gave rise to the Revolution. This includes the way religion and faith were inextricably woven into the struggle—your choice of meetinghouse was often a statement of your political beliefs as well as your religious beliefs, whether you intended it or not. Cameo appearances by real-life Patriots are an added touch, along with historical figures who formed the basis for some of the characters.

Bad-father stories aren’t usually my cup of (smuggled) tea. Too often, such stories devolve into stereotypes or justification for rebellious behavior. Not so in Spark of the Revolution. Patience doesn’t always make the right choices, but she does her best to do the right thing, and the tension between her and her father was realistic rather than overdone. Most of all, I loved how she finally found the peace she needed in her heavenly Father. It was sweet to see how her influence and the Word of God drew Josiah back to his faith, and I appreciated that their relationship didn’t cross too many lines before they were in agreement in such a vital area.

I also loved the friendship Patience developed with her new stepsister. That dynamic is another one that’s too easily stereotyped. Soja did a great job showing the initial tension and hesitation followed by Patience’s decision to look beyond her own feelings and reach out. Will is the perfect older-brother character, and I’m so excited to see more of him in his own story. His involvement in the Patriot cause really amps up the family tension, but it also provides a great setting for Patience to sort through her own beliefs. And that scene where he tells her she doesn’t have to choose between his love as a brother and what she believes is right—my heart.

And the Tea Party scene was perfection. So much historical detail, and so much emphasis on the solemn choices these men made, the risks they took, the honor they showed in their protest.

Spark of the Revolution is the kind of book I wish more authors would write. If you love Christian fiction filled with historical authenticity, realistic characters, and threads of true biblical faith, Spark of the Revolution is definitely one for your to-read list. (It’s perfect for readers who have enjoyed my novels Preacher on the Run and Patriot at the River .) The romance is sweet and wholesome, the setting comes alive with careful detail, and courageous faith and Christian growth shine gently throughout the story. Highly recommended!

What a wonderful debut!

I loved Spark of the Revolution and am so excited for the Harbor of Spies series. Thankfully, I won’t have to wait long for the second book, because Secrets of the Revolution (Harbor of Spies #2) is coming out already in June! Happy day.

I love a good Revolutionary War era fiction, and I would love to see more historical fiction set in this time.

Spark of the Revolution is a work of Christian fiction, and I was impressed at how skillfully and beautifully the author wove faith throughout the story.

I loved all of the well-researched historical and political detail that the author was able to share through the events that take place in this story. I especially enjoyed getting a closer look at the politics of the Revolution and how that impacted ordinary citizens.

Spark of the Revolution also features the sweetest, clean romance.

If you’re in the mood for a clean historical fiction/romance, add this one to your list! I didn’t want to put it down.

Highly recommend!

Grieving the loss of her mother, Patience Abbot journeys with her brother to Boston, Massachusetts, hoping to find a new start with her estranged father. Surprises are in store, both personally and in the politically charged atmosphere of December of 1773.

I appreciated Soja's meticulous research to make the causes of the Boston Tea Party understandable and the complex politics of the day clear without dragging the story into a history lesson. Both perspectives on the conflict were presented well. The love story between Patience and Patriot blacksmith Josiah Wagner is sweet and gentle. Other family relationships in the story are carefully developed and realistically portrayed. I enjoyed reading this on my own and then with my teenage daughter. Looking forward to the entire series!

Historical Gem

I found this story to be quite enjoyable! It was fascinating to witness the origins of the Boston Tea Party, as it skillfully blended rich historical context with a thoughtful exploration of themes such as belonging and nurturing love. The journey of Patience and Josiah in their pursuit of love, while adhering to their principles and integrity, is engaging and well-crafted. The characters are thoughtfully developed, and the attention to historical accuracy significantly enriches the reading experience.

I enjoyed this! I love learning about the Revolutionary War, and with 2026 being the 250th Anniversary of the United States, I am glad to have found this book to help ring-in the celebration. :)
Some parts of the dialogue did not exactly feel very Colonial to me, and I wish there was a little bit more of a historical tie-in between Josiah's storyline and the Boston Tea Party, but overall I enjoyed it and I look forward to reading the following books in the series!

Sweet and romantic, Megan Soja's opener to her Harbor of Spies series, Spark of the Revolution, brings the events precipitating the American Revolution to life in such a beautiful and complex way.

Patience is eager to reconnect with her father and regain the sense of belonging she lost when her mother died. I love how kind and considerate Patience is! It is also interesting how she is open to different viewpoints than her own and can truly see the good in everyone.

Josiah is dedicated to the Sons of Liberty but hopes for a peaceful resolution to the grievances with England. Even though he is a staunch patriot, he realizes that there are moral complexities to the conflict and wants to follow his conscience. I love how Josiah possesses such a wonderful quiet strength. He is willing to show compassion to everyone, including those who have wronged him. I also love how protective he is of Patience!

Megan beautifully illustrated the complexities of living in the colonies at that point in history. She was able to show both sides of the conflict so well. I love learning about this pivotal era in history where our incredible nation was born, and this book just beautifully captured everything I love about the War for Independence.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were easy to learn to love, and I enjoyed getting to learn more about a pivotal time in history. If you enjoy learning about the American Revolution and love a sweet Christian romance, you should read this book!

I received an advance copy of this book. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required.

What a lovely book! And perfect to read this year, while celebrating 250 years since we became an independent nation.

While there is a romance central to this book, the themes of sibling friendship and family love are basically just as strong as the romance, and I loved that. The historical details of pre-Revolutionary Boston are fantastic, and "seeing" the Boston Tea Party happen made me bounce with joy. The writing is fluid and enjoyable, and the characters are delightfully believable and real-feeling. I'm so glad there are two more books out in this series already, and a fourth coming before the end of the year!

Calling all historical fiction lovers! If you love Laura Frantz and Jocelyn Green books then you have a new author to follow/read!

Megan Soja’s debut novel, Spark of the Revolution releases next week and not only does it bring to life my favorite time period, the American Revolution, it also includes my favorite group of rebels, the Sons of Liberty. The perfect combination for an engaging and enlightening story, surely it can’t get any better than that? Well, add in a loyalist’s daughter, Patience, newly arrived from England falling for the handsome smithy, Josiah, who believes in “no taxation without representation” and you have a forbidden romance between two strangers who find common ground during the most important moments of our nation’s history.

If that doesn’t get you excited I don’t know what will. This book is well researched, exceptionally written, and like our forefathers before us, draws guidance and inspiration from the Heavenly Father to give the reader beautiful and faith filled journey of freedom and love.

Don’t miss out on this story! Book two will release later this year and continues the journey with Patience’s brother, Will.

Thank you @megan.soja and Wild Heart books for the advanced copy, all opinions are my own.

An American Revolution series? Say less!

I’ve been super excited to pick this series up, especially this year for America 250.

What I liked:

🇺🇸Setting (Boston during the Tea Party era)
🇺🇸Faith content (strong)
🇺🇸Discussions of grief
🇺🇸Historical details

3.5 for me personally. I’m continuing the series. I enjoyed reading a book set during this historical context. There was nothing wrong with the story itself, I just struggled to connect with the characters and the romance. The plot felt vague and primarily focused on the romance—which fell short for me.

I thought the faith content was great, as well as the discussion of grief and loss. As someone who has experienced deep grief, I appreciate when authors include solid discussions about it in their stories. I also felt that one particular storyline/relationship that didn’t end perfectly or “tied up in a bow” made the story feel more realistic.

If you’re looking for a squeaky clean series set in the American Revolution, check this one out!

"I found home. Home is with you. Whatever may come, wherever God may lead us, home is with you."

I loved this first book in this series and am really excited to read the rest!
It was so interesting to listen to a book where the main character has just come from England to America and is learning about the events unfolding during the years of 1773 and 1774.

The conflict of the two males vying for her hand, the events of the day aka Tea Tax, and Patience trying desperately to gain the favor of her father moved this story along at a decent pace.

I loved the romance between Patience and Josiah. It was sweet, realistic.

There are Christian messages of following God's path and accepting His will, of forgiveness that added beauty to the story as well.

I read this one because I had seen friends recommending it and because one of my goals this year is to read books set around the American Revolutionary War to celebrate America's 250.
I look forward to reading books 2-3 in the coming weeks.

I definitely recommend this one! Loved it!

Audiobook Review: I enjoyed the audio for the most part and it was well done. I think the only thing that bothered me about it was how the narrator did the voice for the father. She made it sound like he was a grandma.

“But I know this—I love you. With all that I am, I love you, and I want nothing more than the honor of calling you my wife.”

This fantastic story has forbidden love, lots of faith, the Boston Tea Party, amazing characters, and a sweet romance. I absolutely loved the historical aspects all of the little details made it so interesting. I really enjoyed this front row view of the Boston Tea Party.

Patience is caring, loving, and helpful. I loved how she kept a good attitude despite how things differed from her expectations. I really enjoyed her relationship with Will and watching her friendship with Libby was delightful. I loved seeing Patience realize that she is fully loved and accepted by her Heavenly Father. It was such a beautiful reminder for me! Josiah is gentle, kind, and a brave patriot. He’s a strong blacksmith who is tender and caring. I enjoyed seeing his flicker of attraction grow. I also enjoyed his friendships and the quick camaraderie with Will. I loved Patience’s gentle reminders to Josiah that he was never alone and I loved seeing him come back to his faith. The romance between Patience and Josiah was so tender and sweet. Yet, it was strong enough to endure a few trials. Their happily ever after was wonderful and I LOVED the epilogue! 🫠

A few more quotes:
⚒️ But Patience—for that was how he truly thought of her—had lit a new fire within him. One that called him to melt away the protective barrier he’d placed around his heart and be shaped into something new. Something hopeful and willing to love.

🫖 “His love is unconditional, not something I can earn nor lose, and in Him, I have true belonging.”

Spark of the Revolution by Megan Soja is a charming historical fiction that portrays with clarity the events leading up to the Boston Tea Party, the Tea Party itself, and a small portion of the aftermath.
When a grieving Patience and her brother arrive in the American colonies following the death of their mother, they are taken aback by surprising events. As Patience struggles adjusting to her new life, Megan skillfully reveals what it may have been like for one to walk, unknowing into the tension and precarious situation in the colonies. Patience strives to become acquainted with and please her long absent father while seeking the truth of the cause her father vehemently opposes. Her struggle is worsened when her brother wholeheartedly joins the cause, and she finds tentative joy and hope in a Patriot blacksmith. Through Patience and Will's viewpoint of their father, I found myself in turmoil. I wanted to be angry with him, but also found myself trying to understand him for sweet Patience's sake.
If you love gentle and sweet romance, strong sibling relationships, and a clear message of faith, forgiveness, and our Heavenly Father's all fulfilling love, this book is for you! Megan Soja laid the groundwork perfectly for the next book, and what I hope will make up the third book as well. She ends Spark of the Revolution beautifully, with foreboding on the horizon, but also with new hope and beginnings for all.

4.5 rounded up to 5

I haven't read a lot of Historical Fiction set during the Revolution (unless you count American Girl, Felicity Merriman). The setting was such an important factor in this book that it was almost a character itself. Patience was precious, and her longing for approval was such an emotional hit. The Christian content was very present and the discussion of the verse in Ephesians brought tears to my eyes. Josiah was almost too perfect of a MMC! His character was a perfect fit for Patience.

My only real criticism is that I wish there were a little more to the ending. It seemed a little abrupt. I wanted to know what happened with the Revolution, and maybe the rest of the series will address some of my questions!

The historical era of the American Revolution sparks my interest every time. The stories of brave men and women pulled apart by the opposing sides and life-changing decisions would fill volumes. It took such bravery to stand firm against a tyrannical force and seek freedom, hope, and prosperity.

The amazing thing about love is that it does not rest even during great upheaval. Love can grow and flourish in unstable events. Love holds promises that nations at war cannot quelch. Enter the Revolutionary War with the hope of love.

Bravo, Megan!

First book of 2026 that I've finished!

This was a good read. The prose was lovely. I enjoyed seeing the characters overcome trials and troubles in the early days of the American War for Independence. I could relate well to some of Patience's inner battles.

There was a little more romance than I like to read, so I skimmed some parts. However, I do realize that it IS in the romance genre, so that didn't really shock me. And nothing was explicit.

New author to me, but I was willing to give this book a try since I love the American Revolution time period. Did not disappoint! Well-plotted, excellent characterization, and stellar writing. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Megan Soja's Spark of the Revolution is set against the atmospheric backdrop of the American Colonies and the Boston Tea Party. As the title suggest, the crucial events taking place in the story are the spark to what would become the American Revolution and the life altering crucible that would follow. Ms. Soja's attention to historical detail creates a strong sense of place that brings the story to life.

Not only is this story a beautiful romance, it is also one of family and forgiveness. As expected at such a time in history, the individual characters must choose a side based on their personal convictions. As the author explored this theme, I couldn't help but reflect that it is one that has divided families and friends throughout history. Subtly woven throughout is a faith thread that is not forced, lending a strong sense of hope and belonging.

I found the main characters delightful and am looking forward to reading Will's story. While the Spark of the Revolution ends on a good note, I couldn't help but wonder what will happen in the sequel as the colonies edge closer to a revolution.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Spark of the Revolution by Megan Soja is an excellent historical fiction set before and after the Boston Tea Party. The story follows Patience Abbott as she moves to Boston to live with her father after the death of her mother in England. She struggles with the way her expectations differ from the life she finds here. Josiah Wagner is a young Patriot blacksmith. Patience captures his attention, though her father’s loyalties differ from his. He grapples with loneliness and supporting the cause of freedom from Britain. Will Patience and Josiah end up together? Will they draw close to God?
I loved seeing 1770’s Boston through Patience’s eyes- her endeavors to get used to life in the colonies, her striving to connect with her father, and her blooming attraction to Josiah. Patience’s reactions to her struggles seemed authentic, and her optimism through it all was admirable. I also enjoyed Josiah’s point of view and especially his struggle to keep his integrity and also support the Patriots. I felt his journey to a closer relationship with God was realistic and I enjoyed that as well. Patience’s brother and sister were my favorite side characters. I thought the ending was absolutely perfect, and I can’t wait to read the next book! Thank you to the publisher for my review copy. All thoughts above are my own; I was not required to write a positive review.

This awesome book is coming out in March 2025. It is a beautifully told story set at and around the time of the Boston Tea Party in 1773.

Patience and her brother are barely off the ship from England when they realize the life with their father in Boston is not going to be like they had imagined. The gap between the father and his children seems to grow and not lessen.

Patience is caught between trying to please her Tory father and loving her brother who joins the ranks of the Patriots. A chance meeting with one of the Sons of Liberty, a local blacksmith Josiah, is going to change the course of Patience life and the life of Josiah as well.

I so enjoyed the talented storytelling that joined history, characters' personal journeys, and faith together in a smooth, evenly-paced story. The heartaches Patience and Josiah revealed to the reader are very relatable. The way they surface in Soja's writing is gentle, but so precise it takes your breath away.

I also appreciated the buildup of the story. The first half carries the strong and emotional theme of fatherlessness of Patience and Josiah, and the Colonies too for that matter. The focus towards the end of the book is more on the romance and finding love and acceptance in God.

It may be Soja's debut novel, but she has become a household name for me already alongside my other favorite colonial fiction writers (like Laura Frantz). And I am very much looking forward to Book 2 in the Harbor Spies series.

I love books taking place during the revolutionary war time period. I loved that this one is set in Boston since I just visited there. I can picture Boston commons and Beacon Hill etc. I liked getting the perspective of both the royalists and patriots. Sad things happened to people on both sides. I loved that the majority of the patriots were trying every way they could without resorting to vandalism and violence though. But they were steadfast in their cause! This book focuses on the Tea act and Boston tea party. “Taxation without representation” and all that. I loved loved loved Josiah and Patience sweet and gentle romance. They were just two good souls and they recognized that in each other. I found the royalist father to be an interesting character. I liked seeing his perspective even if I didn’t agree with it. He was very selfish and stubborn though. I loved the rest of the side characters. The plot moved a little slowly sometimes. The audiobook was just ok. Not good and not bad. Some of the voices bothered me but not enough to stop listening.

SPOILERS and book notes:
I love that his book starts off on a boat heading to Boston Massachusetts in 1773. She is with her brother Will heading to her father after mother died.
November 29, 1773 Boston
Dartmouth ship from east India company and the tea she was carrying just arrived. Josiah 25yo is part of the sons of liberty and a blacksmith. Nathaniel is 18 and his friend and patriot too. Apprentice at Boston gazette. Cocked hats and cues for men’s hair!! Waiting to hear Samuel Adams speak. Patience dad is a shop owner that sells British tea. So the sons of liberty will boy Cott his store until he doesn’t. Josiah is an orphan. It is not the actual tax that is so oppressive. It is taxation with out representation. They want the same rights as all British citizens. Castle island in Boston: “During the Revolutionary War, Castle Island in Boston Harbor served as a key strategic military site, initially held by the British as Castle William to control the city before being evacuated in
1776. Following the British departure, American forces, commanded by Colonel Paul Revere, took over the site, which was then refortified by Colonel Richard Gridley. British Occupation: Prior to 1776, the island was known as Castle William and served to protect British interests in Boston Harbor” the consignee’s of the British tea were taking refuge there. “A consignee is the person or company receives goods being shipped, acting as the final recipient responsible for accepting, inspecting, and often paying for the delivery,” it doesn’t matter if patience is a loyalist or a patriot for Wills love for her! Boston tea party! Dumping tea into the harbor bc they won’t send the tea back. Painting their face black with soot. And some dressed like Mohawks. They don’t destroy anything but the tea on the three ships. Elanor, Dartmoor, and beaver. “Was England like the father who had too often abandoned and disappointed his child? Or worse yet try to bend his child to his own will?” This is what her father does to her so she understands. Josiah is willing to fight for her! She is on the patriots side now. I love when they ice skate in Boston commons! They had to escape town so Josiah wouldn’t get arrested and found a cute house with land outside of Boston.

Megan Soja’s Spark of the Revolution: Harbor of Spies Book 1 instantly transported me into the turmoil between England and The Colonies and the events in and surrounding The Boston Tea Party in the 1770s. Spark of the Revolution is a great start to Ms. Soja’s Harbor of Spies Series! Spark of the Revolution tells the story of Patience Abbott who has traveled from England to Boston with her brother William, to reunite with their Father in Boston after their Father moved there years before. Patience know the basics of what is going on between England and The Colonies, but adjusting to life in Boston causes Patience to learn both sides perspectives. Patience’s Father is a staunch Tory, while William has Colonist’s tendencies (despite William being from England himself). Because of the divided Abbott Household, Patience is unsure which side to take because Patience sees merits in both sides. When Patience strikes up a friendship with Josiah, a blacksmith and a member of the Sons of Liberty, Patience takes a leap of Faith choosing the side God intended for her.

I love traveling to a time period I don’t usually gravitate towards in Spark of the Revolution! Megan Soja vividly transported me to the 1770s, making me experience the time of The Boston Tea Party as never before and learning new things along the way. I enjoyed meeting Patience, William, and Josiah. I loved the way that Ms. Soja wrote the character of Patience to be. I love how Patience saw both sides–both the Tories side and the Colonist side–noticing the pros and cons of both. (I really love that about Patience!) I especially love how Patience struggled with the actual act of patience, despite of it being her name. I love the bond that Patience and William had as siblings! (It reminded me of the bond I have with my own Brothers!) I like Josiah and thought he had a very sweet nature about him. I love the relationship that developed between Josiah and Patience! I love how much Patience and Josiah had in common and how they bonded over shared experiences and how they viewed the Lord and His Word. I love the theme of being in God’s Family that was woven through out Spark of the Revolution, making Spark of the Revolution a special read for me! I love how the title Spark of the Revolution had an underlining theme through book and thought it made the plot unique and a fun read! (Read Spark of the Revolution to find out why!) If you are looking for a read that speaks of God’s Truth through difficult times, showing you that you always have a Family in Him, then I highly recommend Spark of the Revolution: Harbor of Spies Book 1 by Megan Soja! I am looking forward to seeing where Ms. Soja takes the Harbor of Spies series next!

It’s the kind of book that you can’t stop thinking about when you aren’t reading it.

Spark of the Revolution is a love story set against the backdrop of the beginning of the American Revolution and the time of the Boston Tea Party. Siblings Will and Patience have sailed to America after the death of their Mother, so that they may be reunited with their Father. Tensions between colonists and the Crown are rising and a tea tax is due.

A truly good historical fiction book connects you with the past by bringing the time period to life in a relatable way. Megan did exactly that by creating characters that are both lovable and believable and The Spark of the Revolution has sparked a renewed love for the time period for me.

I have always been fascinated with the time of the Revolution and I soaked up as much history as I could when I lived in Boston for 2 years, yet this book made the time period and the places that I visited real to me in a new way. Even if you know very little about these events in history, Megan does a great job making you feel like you are there without overloading you. The focus remains on the characters but the details and the circumstances surrounding their stories are beautifully interwoven into the story.

One of my favorite historical fiction series is, “The Refiner’s Fire” by Lynn Austin which takes place during the Civil War. This book was equal in quality and storytelling and I love that it is set in a very pivotal and captivating time in American History; the beginning of our nation and our fight for independence.

I really enjoyed Will and Patience’s relationship and how it grows and deepens through the story. They have the sibling relationship that I always wished that I could have had with my brother; though I think their closeness was born out of hardship. It was wonderful to see how their relationship developed through the book and was strengthened by everything that they shared.

The love story between Patience and Josiah was believable and heartfelt from the beginning. I found myself rooting for them and anxious to find out if their love would find a way to thrive in the midst of so many obstacles.

Even minor characters in this book are lovable and relatable. I truly felt for Mary and Libby and cared about them and their situation.

I found myself crying more than once as the story came to a close. The ending was very satisfying, even though it left me craving more. Most of the loose ends are neatly tied up by the end of this first book, but knowing that this is only the beginning of the war makes me worried about what will happen to these characters that I have come to love and care about.

If you love a good romance and you enjoy historical fiction, then I highly recommend this book! You will not be dissapointed!

Harbor of Spies, Book 1

1773, Boston

Patience Abbott leaves England with her brother at their father’s urging after their mother’s death. The siblings board a ship to Boston to reunite with their father, whose job as a sailor had kept him from his wife and children for months and even years at a time. Patience learns the shocking news that her father has remarried. She and Will now have a stepmother and stepsister. Patience wonders if it’s possible to be close to her father again.

Blacksmith Josiah Wagner watches as the Eleanor pulls into the harbor with a cargo of tea. He has no family, yet his active, peaceful membership in the Sons of Liberty for the past four years has given him a greater purpose. He and the other patriots aren’t happy to see another boatload of tea, but meeting Patience searching for someone at the docks is a pleasant surprise. Her lost look reminds him of his arrival in Boston at the age of eleven, an orphan. He shows her the kindness no one showed him, something that impacts both of them.

Her brother soon decides to support the patriots’ cause while Patience struggles to understand all that is happening. Her loyalist father runs a shop that sells tea shipped from England. She believes Josiah sides with her brother. The man her father wants her to marry, Edward Cunningham, shares his views. Who is right?

Both the hero and the heroine have suffered significant losses, which leave them with a deep yearning for family and belonging. I was drawn into their struggles and the gentle romance unfolding, and the story became a page-turner for me.

The author does an excellent job of showing the escalating tensions that divided families and neighbors even before the American Revolutionary War. Readers learn a bit of history as a natural part of the story.

Recommended for readers who enjoy novels set in colonial times and for those who enjoy inspirational historical romances.

Christian Historical Romance is a favorite genre of mine. Spark of the Revolution by Megan Soja is the most recent book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 1 in the Harbor of the Spies series. It is also the debut novel by Megan Soja.

The Storyline in this book grasped my attention immediately and I couldn't put it down. The setting is November 1773 in Boston. The 2 main characters in this book are Patience Abbot and Josiah wagner. Patience Abbott has arrived in America from England with her older Brother Will. Patience was hoping for a new start in life and to leave behind the painful things that happened in the past. Will and Patience were hoping to start a relationship with their estranged father, who lives in Boston. Josiah Wagner is a local Blacksmith and part of the Sons of Liberty. Patience and Josiah connect and start a friendship. Life takes a turn for both of them when in the Harbor of Boston is just the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The dumping of Tea into the Harbor became known as the Boston Tea Party. Patience and Josiah had different view points on the happenings in the Boston Harbor and Patience knew her father wouldn't approve of Josiah's view points. Josiah and Patience were growing closer together at this point and Josiah was worried that he would lose the woman he had grown to love. Josiah has a strong faith and he is hoping he can show Patience that God will comfort and protect her through all the changes and sadness in her life, even through Wartime. I truly LOVED this book! The Boston Tea Party and Revoluntary War period is my favorite Era in History. I LOVE how the characters struggled with Life but that God's love surrounded them. Josiah is my favorite character in this book. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Chrisitan Historical Romance. GREAT BOOK!

4.5*, very impressed by this debut work! I am so glad I asked my local library to order it so I could read it. I wasn't much in the mood to read about the time period when I had it checked out from the library but it was due back so I started it and I have to say one of the things that impressed me the most was the way the story captured me and made me want to keep reading.

I loved, loved, loved the sibling relationship between Will and Patience. It was heart filling to read. I loved Josiah and his honesty, even when it put his relationship with Patience at risk. I felt that despite being a novel revolving around the Boston Tea Party there was so much else going on as well that it was really enjoyable to read. I am so excited the sequel comes out in less than two weeks.

It even ended up fitting a reading challenge for me, "A story about estranged family members reconnecting."

Will to Patience: "Your worth as a person does not depend on whether you call yourself a Patriot or a Loyalist." He clasped both of her shoulders with his hands. "You cannot make a decision out of fear that you will lose someone's love, for if that were truly the case, then such love is not worth having in the first place." pg 134

"I do not understand you. Why would you come to my aid after what I said yesterday? Why do you not speak up for yourself now? Press your advantage to try to change my mind?" "Because I love your daughter." Josiah paused and looked the older man directly in the face. "I love Patience, sir, and I know how much she loves you. I cam to help for her sake. I don't know that there is anything I can say to earn your approval, but I respect you enough not to use your time of weakness for my benefit. Mayhap you will respect me enough to allow me to speak to you again when you are well." pg 242

This didn't seem like a debut novel by this author at all. The characters were very well developed, and the research was amazing! Throughout the entire book, I felt like I was walking the streets of Colonial Boston with the characters. I've been to Boston and walked the Freedom Trail so I could picture the characters walking these same streets, especially in the bitter cold which is when most of the story takes place.
We hear the thoughts of Patience and Josiah most of the time. Patience comes to Boston from England hoping that reuniting with her father after years apart will be blissful. However, it isn't what she hopes for as her father has remarried and is a Tory. Patience doesn't really know what's happening in America at this time but quickly comes to learn about the Sons of Liberty and meets Josiah. He is at odds with her father's political beliefs, and she doesn't know how to reconcile the two. Her beloved brother, Will, also decides to secretly join the revolutionary cause so Patience must decide what she believes and who she will follow.
Josiah has been alone in America since emigrating there and his father dying. He is a blacksmith and feels joining the Sons of Liberty is the right thing. He is slowing coming back to his faith and upon meeting Patience and her brother, his life is becoming whole. However, danger is around every corner and after the Boston Tea Party, life in Boston is only going to get more dangerous.
The themes of family, faith, freedom, conviction, principles and love are every present in this story. I just finished the book and already can't wait for the next installment! Even when I wasn't reading this book, I was thinking about it! It stuck with me!

Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, but I haven't read many books about the American Revolution recently. Debut author Megan Soja shares an engaging story that is abundant in historical details and overflowing with personal drama. Spark of the Revolution has wonderful characters who must choose where to place their allegiance. Should they remain loyal to England or instead fight its oppression?

I loved the special feelings that developed between Patience Abbott and Josiah Wagner, but an enduring relationship seemed unlikely. Patience and her brother Will arrived in Boston to establish a deeper bond with their father, but he was extremely loyal to England. Patience had always wanted a closer relationship with her father, but she also yearned to know Josiah better. How would her father ever accept a son-in-law who supported the Sons of Liberty?

Soja devoted much time and effort to research the period leading up to this event. She shared the motivation and events that preceded the Boston Tea Party, and her description of that December night had me holding my breath! Spark of the Revolution is filled with adventure, danger, and an inspiring faith element. Forgiveness, acceptance, and trust in God are woven into this emotional story, and I highly recommend it to all who enjoy historical Christian romance. I look forward to the next book in the Harbor of Spies series!
