Murder has crashed the party, so justice won’t wait for an invitation.

Champagne, caviar… and a corpse. This high-society party wasn’t meant to end in murder. When my brother calls me to investigate the brutal stabbing of a female ogre at the charity ball of the season, the glittering magical elite quickly become a sea of suspects.

Everyone who’s anyone was there, but glamour has given way to something far darker. Someone’s playing a deadly game, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. It’s my job to cut through the beauty and lies to find a killer hiding among the rich and powerful.

As a police inspector with the Connection, I’ve seen plenty of strange things, but this case reeks of entitlement, secrets, and old money with something to hide. Then the King of the Ogres storms in. Furious and formidable, he demands justice. Stopping him from tearing through the guest list is almost as hard as keeping my mind on the case, because rage and power look annoyingly good on him.

But when a dryad turns up dead at another elite event, I realise I’m chasing a serial killer who thinks they’re too rich to face consequences… and they’re setting my brother up to take the fall.

With a rookie partner finding his feet and my talking-bird sidekick offering sharp advice (and sharper insults), I’m racing against the clock to solve the case before my brother faces the lethal justice of the Other realm…

Immerse yourself in The Other Detective Series – perfect for fans of supernatural crime, complete with a fierce heroine, gritty murder investigations, and a slow-burn romance.

Sometimes when you least expect it, you get randomly hit by a fantastic book that’s totally up your alley. This was such a book for me.

I didn’t realise how much I missed a book where the heroine is fearless, cool, powerful and a total badass. Add in to it that Stacy is a supernatural cop- you got a winner.
Hero Krieg is the high king of Ogres and he’s so smitten with Stacy much to her bewilderment. I found that quite hilarious. He is a gentle giant (but a powerful giant) and I loved how he quietly protected her. I love a hero who is so sure about his feeling for the heroine.
I really enjoyed Stacy’s bond with Loki, god, that bird is cute menace. Loved the secondary characters like Kate, Channing and Stacy’s whole fam.

The plot was done well and I loved the writing style.
Romantic suspense is always my fav but when you add supernatural elements in to it, it gets even better. In this unique world the author created, there are Wizards, witches, Dryads, Vamps, Ogres and so much more.

Can’t wait to read the next book, thankful that it’s already out and available in KU.

-Urban Romance.
-Romantic suspense.
-Murder mystery.
-Slow burn romance.
-Cop heroine with talking bird sidekick and a ghost friend.
-Unique world and powers.
-Recommended.

Safety- it’s safe with no OW drama.

I received an advance review copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

It's exciting to have a new book in the other side series and a fantastic start on a new character. Inspector Stacy wise has a murder to solve, a young ogre is murder during an unapproved protection detail at a swanky party. Stacy must inform the ogres of the death and the king Kreigh demands to be in on the investigation and you don't tell a king no. The next nights fancy party brings another murder a young dryad waitress killed just like the ogre, to complicate matters Stacys brother discovered both bodies throwing him into the prime suspect spot. Stacy must track down the killers before the connection decides to charge him! Fantastic first in series.

I enjoyed this line from the book: Life isn't supposed to be simple Inspector. It's should be messy wild and fun. I am going to enjoy being your complication.

Having just finished book 4 in the Other Witch series I was worried that I couldn’t love Stacey and Robbie as much as Amber and Bastion. There was no danger of that! Stacy is a brilliant, strong female lead with a family that made me really laugh out loud at one point! The High King of the Ogres showed us a totally different side and I lapped it up! Throw in a couple of murders to solve, with twists to keep you guessing and a very interesting bird called Loki. I devoured this book in one day and now find myself very eagerly anticipating book 2! The great thing with the books in the Other World Series is that you can start at any set without having read the others. So if you haven’t tried any before give this one a go!

Magic, Murder, and the Hottest Ogre King Around
A gripping mystery with heart, humor, and familiar faces I wanna squish despite the danger

Absolutely perfect first book in a new series and an incredible continuation of one of my favorite worlds! Full of rich world building, mystery, magical politics, and yes, more slow burn tension 🔥

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Stacy continues to be a smart, capable, and just generally badass detective. The mystery kept me hooked, and I loved diving deeper into ogre culture—can’t wait to learn more. Krieg is still a hot ogre king and I love him with Stacy.

Loki remains iconic - rude, hilarious, and somehow deeply sweet in his own way. I loved seeing more of his perspective and his loyalty to Stacy.

Also loved the cameos and callbacks (Amber! Bastion! The potion!) and the way Kass is friends with Stacy. Can't wait to see more of everyone.

So happy to be back in the Other realm, I’ve missed it so much.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book and oh my god I devoured it as soon as it hit my inbox - on the way to work, during my lunch, returning home from a concert and staying up well into the morning just to get to the bottom of the story. Stacy and Krieg are just *chefs kiss* and the crime drama of this book was so much fun. It reminded me of Heather’s Portlock series but more zeroed in on the police work. Stacy is such an interesting protagonist and I can’t wait to spend more time with her in future books. I wish the rest of this series was out now so I could dive into what happens next. As always, I love the little nods to the other Other world stories and characters. This world is so rich and I am so happy to see where these characters take us next.

I received an ARC of Veiled Justice. This book was another example of an excellent Heather G Harris book. Veiled Justice is fast paced, interesting and even funnier than previous books.

I like Stacy because she isn’t the cardboard cut out heroin that most other books in this (and similar) genres have. The dynamic between Stacy and Krieg was interesting and the tension well created. And the addition of Loki and Stacy’s family amused me and warmed me in equal measure.

I found Heather G Harris last year because one of her series’ is set in my home city of Liverpool. I loved the nods to familiar places and the idea that magic lay nearby but out of sight. When I finished, I quickly read her entire back catalogue (including collaborations) and then continued with her new releases. Despite her gruelling release schedule, the books never seem rushed. They manage to be both comforting and exciting to read and I always finish them much quicker than any other books. I look forward to the next release date, when I can get my hands on another book. They are easy to read and at times are a welcome deviation from the long fantasy books I read but this isn’t to say that they’re any less enjoyable. Instead, I find it means that they calm and comfort me, like the literary equivalent of a cup of hot chocolate on a cold day.

You quickly come to love the characters and I also love that Stacy’s series is set in the Other so we get to see familiar faces and already know how the world works. If you give Stacy a go, you won’t regret it.

This book is an excellent example of Ms. Harris’ skill in juggling multiple characters and story lines at the same time. While being an interesting crime/procedural story, Veiled Justice is also rich in magic, secrets, wit, and mystery. Bits of flirtation were thrown in as well. Not only was the flirtation interesting and fun, but it added a bit of balance to the murdery parts.
As usual, Heather G. Harris has the wit and comedy down perfectly. I now desperately need a pet to name “Pigdog”! If you are a first time reader of Heather G. Harris’, this is a great book to start your journey. For long time fans, it was great to see glimpses of well-known characters.

I am not usually a fan of romance novels, but I do love crime and fantasy, and really enjoy Heather Harris’s writing style, so had to buy this book. It did not disappoint.
Luckily for me, the fantasy and crime aspects of the book were the main focus – but the romance was not to be ignored. Especially as when the two main characters meet, you know that they are meant to be together – even though they are different species, with entirely different circles of acquaintances, jobs, status etc. It is a slow burn, with (thankfully) none of the usual tropes of alpha-male bad boy, or enemies to friends. Just two adults, who treat each other with respect. Oh, and one (at least) is drop-dead gorgeous.
Stacy Wise, an Inspector who works for the Connection investigating crimes in the Other (supernatural) realm, and also in the Common (everyday) world. From necessity, the two worlds are kept separate. In the first, she is Judge, Jury and Executioner, but in the Common world she has to abide by British justice rules. Stacy is also a high-ranking wizard, and has a talking bird companion, Loki, a caladrius (might look like a parrot, but don’t ever call him one!).
A young female ogre is murdered at a party full of exceedingly rich, entitled, supernatural persons, where she was working as personal bodyguard for one of the guests. No known motive for the murder, and no-one saw anything. Stacy’s younger brother and his girlfriend find the body.
The book follows normal police-procedural lines – but, of course, with added supernatural elements, and some romance (but no spicy scenes – slow burn!). The perpetrators look odious from the start, but why they committed the crime, and how, is not so obvious. A lot of good police work is required before they (or most of them) are brought to justice.
The pace of the book is quite fast, and it was difficult to put down. I have already pre-ordered the next book in the series “Mystic Justice” (due out 2 Oct 2025), and can barely wait.
Highly recommended to anyone who likes crime novels and/or supernatural and/or romance – there is a bit for any fiction fan.

This was such a fun read! A fast-paced urban fantasy with a solid crime investigation at the center that kept me turning pages. I really liked Stacy as a main character, she’s competent, a little prickly in the best way, and so easy to root for.

The mix of magic, mystery, and humor worked really well, and Loki absolutely added to the entertainment factor. There’s also a touch of romance that I actually really enjoyed. It’s not overly dramatic or full of tropes it’s just two characters with great chemistry that feels genuine and adds something extra to the story.

Overall, just a really good time. Smart world-building, engaging case, and a hint of well-done tension. I’m definitely continuing the series.

Wow. I didn’t think that a character could replace Amber in my fangirling head and then Stacy arrived. Absolutely perfect character development, seamless continuity in the Other world, and just the right amount of sass and spice. I think there’s lots of layers to Stacy and I can’t wait to see them peel away as her story unfolds. I could feel the tension between Stacy and Robert as I read and I’m excited to see what’s in store for them. The case itself was well thought out and full of little twists and turns, I truly didn’t figure out whodunit until near the end. Bravo Heather G Harris, another incredibly real, funny and kickass female lead and a great new insight into the Other.

Gobbled this up! Thoroughly enjoyed this spicy fantacy ‘whodunnit’. Loved the banter between the characters and the MC’s talking pet bird was snarky and hilarious. Hope the slow burn will not be too slow!
This is a new to me author, who was suggested by a Goodreads friend. So glad she did, will definitely read the next installment not often you find a cozy mystery, fantacy, romance—such a joy to find a book that checks all the boxes. 🌙(For your soul Heather!)

Stacy Wise is a DI with the Connection and has helped Amber in the past. Now she has her own story! If you love urban fantasy with dryads, wizards, witches and ogre’s this is your book! Heather does an amazing job building the Other, magical side of our world as the non magical is the Common. Stacy must find a killer before her brother is charged. Since the first murder is an ogre she to work with Robert Krieg, King of the Ogre’s and he is definitely on her radar!

Veiled justice
One of the other series of books by Heather G Harris. It probably helps if you've read the other series, but it isn't necessary. This one is about an inspector in the police force and an ogre. An unusual couple. An easy and fun read. The answer to the mystery was not immediately obvious, but all the clues were there.
Well worth reading and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.

I received this as an ARC and absolutely loved it.
Devoured the whole book in a day.
I already liked Stacy Wise from her introduction in the previous books set in the world of the “Other”, and her first story does not disappoint.
All the books in this world are amazing, so, if you are new to this world, highly recommend every single one.

This book was AMAZING. As a certified vibes reader, Veiled Justice delivered on every possible level. Murder mystery, supernatural intrigue, sharp banter, and a slow-burn romance that had me feral.

Set in a glittering magical elite hiding very ugly secrets, the story follows Stacy, a fierce detective navigating brutal murders, corrupt power, and a justice system that favors the rich. The plot had me completely hooked I needed to know who did it, and every reveal kept raising the stakes. The investigation is smart, gritty, and perfectly paced.

And then there’s Kreig, the Ogre King. Furious, powerful, demanding justice and somehow impossibly charming. The banter between Kreig and Stacy is top-tier flirtation. Every interaction crackles with tension, wit, and unspoken meaning. Him calling her “his shadow”??? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN

This book made me feel everything: suspense, excitement, intrigue, and that delicious ache of a slow-burn romance done right. I am fully invested in this series now and will be following it wherever it goes.

Highly recommend for fans of supernatural crime, morally powerful MMCs, fierce heroines, and romances that simmer beneath the chaos.

Thank you Nerd Fam for the EARC

Veiled Justice is book one in The Other Detective series by Heather G. Harris and narrated by Alyse Gibbs.

I devoured this audiobook that is full of Magic, Murder, and a Hotter than Hot Ogre King!

Veiled Justice delivers a gripping mystery with heart, humor, wonderful banter, suspense, a cocky sidekick bird, and other cool characters. It’s full of rich world building, mystery, magical politics, and a slow-burn romance.

I didn’t know before going into this that it’s part of The Other World that Harris has written about. You don’t have to read those other series to enjoy this thrilling new series in the same world.

Stacy is a strong female lead. She’s brilliant, smart, capable and a badass detective. The High King of the Ogres is strong, powerful, capable, and sexy as hell.

The mystery kept me hooked, and I loved learning about the ogre culture. Loki, our sidekick bird companion of Stacy's, is rude, hilarious, and sweet in his own way.

Veiled Justice is a fast-paced magical listen. You quickly come to love all the characters and I can’t wait to dive into book two, Mystic Justice.

Audio: Alyse Gibbs did a superb job with her narration of Veiled Justice. I fell into the story and gobbled it up. Her voices are distinctive, clear, and fit each character. She brings out their personalities and keeps the pace flowing smoothly. I highly recommend the audiobook.

Urban fantasy has been my comfort genre since I first fell into it through The Hollows and The Dresden Files, so I’m always chasing that same magic now: just with more inclusive worlds and fewer “this didn’t age well” moments. This series REALLY scratched that itch for me. It feels like a modern UF that understands what made those older series beloved while doing the work to be fresher, kinder, and less… problematic. EXACTLY what I’ve been craving.

In this world, there is a magical elite where champagne flows, secrets lurk, prejudice is rampant, and people are getting murdered behind the velvet ropes. We follow a supernatural police inspector unraveling a case that spirals from a single brutal death into something far bigger, messier, and more dangerous than it first appears. The book opens with the victim’s point of view, which is such a brutal, effective choice; it hooks you emotionally before the investigation even starts. You don’t just want the mystery solved; you CARE that it gets solved.

I absolutely adored this. I finished it and immediately went hunting for the prequel and then book two, which is basically my highest compliment. The world feels layered and genuine, with different supernatural races, political tension, and subtle commentary woven in.

The cast is ridiculously charming. Not so much the baddies, but the gangster doppleganger was fun and I'm so thrilled to get more of him in the prequel (even though this briefly explains the story of that one if you don't want to read the prequel). Our main character feels grounded and competent, the rookie partner is endearing, and the talking bird sidekick is a chaotic, unhinged little delight. And Krieg!!! Dominant while respectful, kind but ruthless. I'm in love, and I adore how he throws Stacy for a loop with his flirting. I loved the slow-burn romantic tension quietly building in the background.

The mystery itself is fast-paced and genuinely engaging. It’s funny, gritty, and smart in a way that makes it so easy to binge. Honestly, I’m already deep in this series and very happy about it. If you love urban fantasy with murder, magic, and charming characters, this is such a satisfying read.

Own this one for few months now - but this author wrote SO MANY books within the same universe and it was hard for me to catch up with them all, so I put this one aside. However, this week I had the mood to read an UF book, so I returned to this series.

I didn't remember much about the set-up - Frustrated Justice - but I didn't find it hard to follow through. Things were quite straight-forward; there were two murders back-to-back, Inspector Stacy Wise investigated, and the King of Ogre came along (because the first victim was an ogre), and well there was flirting in between (mostly from his side, though she reciprocated). Oh and there was a notabird! Caladrius, Loki, that seemed to settle down with Inspector Wise (didn't remember where he came from *shrugs*)

The investigation itself was... uhm, simple? I mean, there wasn't huge twists and turns along the way. The annoying characters stayed annoying, and apparently involved. So there. Still, it was good enough to keep me focused and wanting to check out the second book.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Stacy is a great main character. She’s smart and self-assured. Even though Loki, her taking bird companion, calls her “pigdog”. Loki is quite a character and vocal but I love the smidgen of warm moments between them.

Oh and Krieg - the ogre king. In previous story arcs, he comes across as a bit of a stereotype. Alpha male, move wrong and I’ll kill you but boy, you see lots of sides to his personality here. And I’m definitely there for it. Can’t wait to see the relationship develop between him and Stacy.

The plot itself is police procedural with a murder with no obvious motive at an evening party. The investigation was interesting and develops into a lot more going on (hard to say much without spoilers) and there were definitely a few curve balls. Thoroughly enjoyed and bring on more Stacy and Krieg please!

I have been looking forward to Stacy's story for a while, and as always, Heather Harris did not disappoint. Stacy is an Inspector that works in the common as well as the Other Realm, and when an ogre is murdered at a party, it falls completely into her lap.

I loved that this book was more police procedural than previous ones as it really sets Stacy apart. She is described like a cactus, and I think it's the perfect example. This book had humor as Stacy is trying to track down murderers, which kept it from getting too dark. We also meet her family and learn of her past, those secrets that must stay hidden, and why she loves her job. The author does a phenomenal job taking us deep into her life like a friend and not in an unnerving way. Her sass also had me laughing out loud, and I really can't wait to see what happens next with Stacy!

Loved it!

I’ve been on a big Heather G. Harris binge this summer and love her world. I’ e been waiting for this first book in a new spin off series and I was not disappointed. I’ve really enjoyed the way Krieg has been rehabilitated and enjoyed that those of us who read the previous books were in on the background info. Wise is a great character. And I am really enjoying how all of these MCs have some twist to their personas.

This murder mystery was an interesting set up and there were some good clever clues dropped. I’m really looking forward to the next book.

What a great start to a series! This was such a fun supernatural detective mystery that kept me on my toes. The fast pace and engaging mystery definitely kept my attention throughout.

I hadn’t read anything involving ogres before reading this so it was nice to read something new to me and learn about their culture.

Read this if you like:
→ Slow burn
→ Magic & suspense
→ Police procedural

I had fun with this one, I’ll have to be on the lookout for more in the series.

Full disclosure: I received an advance reader copy (ARC) of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book as much as the others in the Other Realm series that came before it. It was fast-paced and had me changing my mind about who possibly "did it" on several occasions. I truly felt Stacey's urgency as she rushed to save her brother and waited with bated breath for the ultimate reveal. I lost track of the times I paused to count how many pages were left and what that meant in terms of reading time. The pacing overall was great. And the very small sneak peek of potential bigger issues to come has me craving the next book already.

While the detective work drew my attention, it was the chemistry between Stacey and "Robbie" that kept me the most interested. Goodness gracious! He wasn't exactly subtle, but watching her struggle to comprehend his intentions was entertaining. My only complaint—and the reason for a 4-star instead of a 5-star rating—is not getting the resolution I wanted for them.

But above all, the Caladrius named Loki was my absolute favorite, providing comic relief when needed, plus a touch of heart and warmth.

All in all, it was an excellent book!

Big fan of this author and her writing. Excited to receive an ARC of this book! Great paranormal detective read! Loved Stacy and the High King of the Ogre relationship. Stacy is an independent and strong female detective who will do anything for her family. Enjoyed reading her investigating crimes - the cases kept you intrigued throughout the story but definitely stayed for the slow burn romance! Love a good romantic tension read! The side characters were awesome too! I need a caladrius - Loki is the best! Lowkey he is hilarious! Can’t wait for the next book!

ARC Provided in exchange for honest review.

I ADORE Heather G Harris' writing, particularly her Other realm works - so much so, I have the symbol included in my bookish tattoo sleeve. I've been SUPER excited for Stacy's story arc to begin! Stacy is a Detective Inspector for the Connection, law enforcement in the Other realm. Based in Chester, she is called to investigate the murder of an Ogre called Helga at a swanky party. Being an Ogre, High King Krieg arrives at the scene - the very swoon worthy High King Krieg - and Stacy finds herself working with him closely. The following night, a second body is found at another party - and both bodies were discovered by Stacy's brother, Rupert. With him seemingly in the frame for the murders, Stacy and Krieg have 24 hours to find the real killers and exonerate him, before another detective takes the case, who isn't as thorough. Can they prevent a miscarriage of justice?

Stacy is super cool headed, a fierce advocate for justice, and is counting the days on her current celibate streak. Krieg is a very unusual Ogre - not only is he a half breed, which is unheard of for the High King, but he is very willing to cooperate with the Connection on what should be an in house matter. His gentlemanly manner, coupled with gentle flirtation, shows signs of an excellent slow burn romance to come, and I'm super excited for it! The crimes are plotted well and the solving of them is incredibly satisfactory, just what you want from a crime novel. I love the interspersing of tender scenes amongst the gritty procedural stuff - particularly the scenes at Stacy's family home. And high five on the Dr Pepper love! The story is left on a very mysterious note, setting the scene for the next book and I can't wait for it to come out!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book!
