Desire & Deception

Rate this book
Tessa Marshal agreed to make her last night in Mexico memorable, but she didn't expect that to include being dragged out of her car in the middle of the night. She wakes up to find herself bound on the floor of a cartel safe-house, having to account for her part in a double-cross.

Deep cover agent Kristopher "Kris" Harmon has spent years climbing the ranks within the Mexican cartel. He walks a tight line between vicious drug runners with agendas of their own and working with the cartel leaders he’s trying to organize. Any distraction could prove fatal for him—and for the hundreds of undercover law enforcement officers his own cover protects.

Their worlds collide when Tessa is mistaken for a drug mule and taken captive. As time runs out for both of them, Tessa has to reach beyond her fears and trust a stranger while Kris must choose between his lifelong ambitions and saving Tessa's life. If they want to survive, both must trust that there is more to the other than what meets the eye.

Sahara Roberts caught the writing bug early in life. She enjoys writing Dark Romance and Romantic Suspense. Her days are filled with international trade issues (the legal kind) and her evenings writing steamy romance.

She is currently working on expanding the Billionaire Heirs series.

Sahara lives in South Texas with her beloved husband and their three furry overlords. She enjoys cooking, baking, and cake decorating, but she would certainly prefer to have someone else do the dishes.

What’s with the weird first sentence of the blurb? Home ownership is hardly crucial to the plot!

World’s quickest case of Stockholm Syndrome aside, there was something about the way this book was written that didn’t… work for me. The choppy scenes and descriptions clearly worked in the author’s mind, but on the page they were confusing and random.

To do romantic suspense well, you can’t have mental lusting (or full-on sex!) at inappropriate (i.e. dangerous) times, and Desire & Deception committed this crime over and over. I’m not interested in a beaten and kidnapped woman being turned on by her captor even as she thinks he’s about to rape and murder her. This book is classified as romance; we know they’re going to get there in the end, so it doesn’t need to be established from the outset.

It had some good ideas. The reason I requested it for review was because I thought the blurb was interesting. However, I think it should have gone through a few more revisions to both tighten the story and make the insta-attraction between the two main characters plausible.

There was also a pretty serious tone of misogyny running underneath. The heroine’s friend was – of course – blonde, outgoing, slutty, shrill, pushy, annoying and disloyal. While every other character was referred to by name, she was always called “the blonde” from page one, even by her friend. Misogyny, particularly the stereotyping of blonde women, is my #1 pet hate in fiction.

Speaking of names, I think part of my frustration with the writing style was the way the characters were always, always referred to by their names. Never “he” or “she” or “they”. It was always “Kris this and Kris that”.

Argh! So frustrating! Good ideas but it needs a good edit.

Received in exchange for a honest review.

This was interesting.

Tessa is one that is in the wrong place at the wrong time and being dragged into something because of a supposed friend. A friend that is in over her head and doesn’t really know how to get out of it.

Kris is undercover and his reasoning for going into this work is sad. He is trying to get justice for his parents in a round about way by removing the drugs and the drug lords so no one else is hurt.

their paths cross by accident due to Tessa’s friend and her being mistaken as a drug mule and here is when the chemistry and interesting turn of events occur.

We see Tessa fear Kris at first but not as much as the others. She is smart and hard working but also doesn’t know Kris so she fears since she has been in danger since being taken. So she eyes him warily. Over time as he shows her kindness and protects her she comes to consider him her protector. As they talk at night when he is keeping her from harm from the others, she submits to the chemistry they have between them and more develops. But she never really truly trusts him because she wants to protect her friends.

Kris is a strong, caring man. Meeting Tessa puts him in a crossroads. He admires her loyalty and strength and wants to help her. He is also falling for her and this puts his uncover operation in danger. Can he protect her, fall in love and succeed at doing his job? Things get complicated for him and the untangling is filled with danger and suspense that has you on the edge of your seat waiting to see how this turns out for them. I loved watching Kris struggle with himself and what to do. In the end we truly see how amazing kris is and where he belongs.

A suspenseful romance filled with sensual scenes, trust building, loyalty love and support. Where we see two people evolve and show strength and character in adverse conditions as they fall in love and find a way to survive the situation they are in for different reasons.

In order to celebrate the home Tessa has just purchased she and her roommate Heather head to Mexico to enjoy a vacation with her best friend who lives there. While at a club she is mistaken for someone else and ends up being kidnapped by the Mexican Cartel.

Kris is an undercover agent who has managed to infiltrate the upper echelon of the Cartel. When he first saw Tessa at the club he was attracted to her but when he finds out that she and her friend are now his captives he must walk the line between treating her right and being too nice to her and drawing the attention of others in the cartel. Before too long they are unable to deny their attraction to each other but will he be able to keep her safe?

I enjoyed the first story that I have ready by this author. The storyline has a good combination of suspense and steam that keeps you interested until the end.

First time for this author with the adventure being the lure. What a vacation with not one I would of planned. I don't think anyone does with thinking and I will take a spot of terror with that. As Tessa gets her terror you are sucked in with the "vacation"and wrong thoughts. Then there is Kris whom plays a double role but with good reasons. They also will get a added bonus with this story that builds with it being more than she bargains for as a gift that this will give. Given all the emotions that will filter through you will find yourself side by side with them seeing what lies at the end of this "vacation".

This is a new author to me, and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. When Tessa is draw to Kris in a nightclub, she never dreamt about the events that would follow. Tessa is mistaken for a drug mule and is captured. Kris is the boss of the Mexican cartel. This is a well written story, which is filled with action, suspense, angst, and romance. No spoilers; this is one to read for yourself.

A gripping romantic suspense. An exciting story filled with danger, action, intensity, heat, and steam. Tessa and Kris have an undeniable attraction and a sizzling chemistry. Can these two strangers work together and trust each other? Or will their meeting be the beginning of the end for them? This is my completely honest, voluntary review.

What an adventure!

Tessa and Kris — she’s kidnapped and he’s her savior, even though she thinks he’s part of the Mexican cartel. I had a big issue with her attraction & willingness to get intimate with him from day one. He does redeem himself and they get their HEA. But that issue seriously bothered me.

3- Deception filled Stars! I liked this book, but I didn't love it. The premise was very good but there parts of the book that seemed kind of choppy to me.

Tessa is on a once in a lifetime vacation to visit her friend Moni. Along for the ride is her roommate Heather, who she will no longer be living with as Tessa has finally gotten her first home.

While out partying at the night club, Heather wants to go to more places and do more and Tessa knows she has to keep an eye on her, so she agrees to go along, but then they become separated from the rest of their friends. On the road to the next club, they find themselves being pushed off the roadway and dragged from their wrecked rental car and kidnapped in Mexico. Tessa fights tooth and nail, but ends up taken anyway.

Once at the kidnappers compound, Tessa is met with the lusty glares of her kidnappers and with the compounds leader Kris. Kris is quiet and once Tessa sees him, she realizes he is the man who she locked eyes with at the club. Tessa is subjected to the kidnappers glares but Kris claims her from himself, even though he has never done so before. Tessa holds her head up high and does not give in to their demands for ransom, as she does not want to involve her friend Moni.

Here is where it gets alitte choppy- Tessa's ex-roommate is apparently a drug runner and is looking to score cocaine to run through the united states and is shopping for partners. The cartel who kidnapped her, are after their payment and retribution. Throughout, Heather seems like a self servicing piece of work, who will do anything with anyone to get what she needs. In the meantime, Tessa realizes that even though she is with the cartel and Kris, she somehow feels safe with him.

Eventually, Kris and Tessa give in to their attraction and it is very HOT!Their chemistry is great but Kris is also trying to sort out Tessa's connections, is she innocent or guilty in everything like her roommate. All of this while Kris is also leading a double life.

The last 25% of the book moves very fast and its a whirlwind of events. I was disappointed on how quickly some of the cartel members were dealt with as I think, more build up and action. The ending was sweet as we got closure on our characters who were otherwise left un-knowing what happened.

A vacation to visit her bestfriend turns up into a kidnapping but did she ever think that she would develop romantic feelings for the person that kept her in his room as a prisoner.

This was a well written story with plenty of action, romance and did I mention suspense. This suspense/ thriller was intriguing and had scenes that made my skin crawl. I wanted to know if his cover was going to end up being made and I wanted to know whether she was going to be put in a bad situation besides the kidnapping.

Tessa Marshal is a tough woman that knows how to defend herself and I’m so glad because she was able to fight off her kidnappers before darkness consumed her. She was smart and determined to escape except that she had no idea where she was and if her friend was okay.

Kristopher “Kris” Harmon is the bossman in a Mexican cartel gang. He saw her at the club and he was fixated on her and he lost the woman that was the target. When he ended up going to the house where they had the woman he noticed they got the wrong woman but what if she is in it with Heather. It seems that her friend is talking and is willing to give Tessa to the crew so they can do what they please with her.

Tessa can’t believe that Kris is staying in the same room as her and he is being really nice. He buys her food so she won’t starve and he’s also buying her personal items. Kris is coming depend on seeing her in the morning and he can’t wait to return to be with her. He was constantly aroused when thinking about her and when he was with her but he didn’t touch her in the beginning. Soon things change and they are together and they can’t get enough of each other but something goes wrong. Something is shown and it’s time for Kris to act.

Desire and Deception was a great read that captivated my attention from the beginning to the very end. I know at times it was slow but it was still intriguing. The other problem was that I wanted to know more about Heather and what was happening to her and a little more about what happened to her. I know that she got what she deserved but I wanted a little more details. The characters were well developed and the storyline was well developed. The chemistry between them was hot and when they were together it was extremely hot.

I truly recommend this read to all readers that love a little thrill/suspense with a shot of romance.

MICHELLE'S REVIEW

I really enjoyed this book. I believe this is is Sahara Roberts, first book (sorry if I'm wrong) but either way- I think it was a strong book. I think I expected a bit more of a mystery read but this was more of a suspenseful and romantic read.

In the ultimate case of wrong place, wrong time, Tessa finds herself thrust into the world of a drug cartel. Lucky for her- she catches the eye of the one person who can keep her safe- Kris. As an undercover agent, he has to create an air of being interested in her as only an object but somewhere a long the lines, the two of them form something real.

I did think at times the story moved a little too fast. I felt like she trusted him easily but that could have been the stockholm syndrome at play. I also felt like the ending was little rushed BUT I also liked it a lot. Also, I was a bit confused about how they were communicating. I guess Tess could speak Spanish fairly fluently. I might have missed that being said but I was a bit confused about that.

Overall, I thought this was a good, quick read. The action does capture you so you don't want to put it down until you know what's happening. Which is always a good thing!

So I unknowingly read the second book, Sahara Roberts, before this one and didn't realize they were tied together. I was hoping a lot of the character development or background was set up in this one, but it really wasn't. In fact, I came away with a different (maybe lighter?) impression of Monica (2nd book's heroine).

This was a great book. What I enjoyed the most about the second book was the action and suspense. This one had all that and I really liked the chemistry and interaction between Kris and Tessa. Kris was a great hero and I could feel the tension coming off him.

I also liked how there were a few surprises thrown in that I never saw coming. Although the book started off with a bang and was super intense, it did dip for awhile around the 30% mark. The middle of the book was stationary with her kidnapped and holed up in a room. It was slow, but Tessa was a great character to keep me invested. A good blend of tough and smart, but not stubborn and stupid. Add that to Kris and I was on the edge of my seat to find out how they were going to get out of the mess.

I loved this book and am in awe this is Sahara Robert's first published story. Impressive start to a great career!

From the get go you catch your breath...and hold it. Tessa is kidnapped, Kris (hot hero) has to maintain his front as one of the bad guys when in fact he's a law enforcement agent, who's had to embrace violence and criminal activity for years as part of his cover.

Tessa's confinement is claustrophobic, fraught with threat from other gang members, and Kris has to protect her without blowing his own cover. And if that isn't enough tension, you've got the sexual chemistry between Tessa and Kris constantly bubbling away, with a strong sense of the imminent, that any minute now, the pair are going to jump each other...they can't deny their attraction despite the pressures bearing down on both of them, and when they do jump...wowzer!

The plot isn't unduly complex, but to convince, it necessitates Tessa and Kris spending time apart. For a reader heavily into the romance element, this could jar. However, the dynamic between this pair when they are together, more than compensates for this.

Two great characters, a fierce plot and a romance that sparks...Ms Roberts pulls off a story that is rich in atmosphere and gets the heart pumping.

Whew! This one was a really good read from Sahara. There is a lot of action and steamy love scenes. The attraction between Tessa and Kris is huge from the beginning, but there are many things that Kris can't tell Tessa. Tessa is just on vacation when her roommates life drags her into some nasty business and she's kidnapped by Kris and his group. What Tessa doesn't know is that Kris is undercover, and can't reveal himself or things could go wrong real fast. As much as Kris wants Tessa, he fights that attraction as long as he can. While Tessa knows that she shouldn't be feeling anything remotely like this for Kris, that chemistry is there, lingering between them and building every day. There are so many ways that this could have gone wrong, unexpected revalations and some serious what the hell moments, in the end everything works out like it should. I loved reading this, and it's the first book I've read by Sahara which makes me want to read more. I loved the story line and the characters played their parts awesomely. Really well done!

A woman celebrating home-ownership (a rather ridiculous premise at first, until you realise it's really a celebration of all she has achieved in her life) takes a trip into Mexico and gets tangled in cartel wars. Little does she know that the jefe with whom she eventually gets down and dirty with is deep undercover and her presence actually compromises an operation that's coming to a head.

This is certainly a fast-paced story, but development and cohesion are sacrificed for brevity, to its detriment.
It really does feel like Stockholm Syndrome at work because of the brief time period in which Tess and Kris get together.

There were many instances where I felt as though I was plunged straight into a scene without sufficient context and the narrative and the casual influx of characters left me hanging bewildered. Even so, there's a sweetness to both Kris and Tessa that I can't help liking, a chemistry that's of course, explosive and a short but good epilogue that gives us their HEA.

Tessa is on holiday in Mexico with a friend. While driving away from a nightclub her car is forced off the road and she and her friend are kidnapped. Tessa puts up a fight and manages to injure the men but still wakes up hours later tied up and captive. She realises she's been kidnapped by a drug cartel but doesn't know why. The man in charge, Kris, separates her from the rest of the men who all want a go at her, he keeps her safe. But why? What are his motives? Where is her friend and why have they been kidnapped?
Kris is an exciting character, he's able to pull off the hard faced cartel boss always on his guard whilst at the same time showing his softer side to Tessa. I like Tessa, she's feisty, put up a fight at every opportunity.
The plot is exciting and I like the characters so well worth a read.

I enjoyed this book a lot. To tell most things about the book would give it away, but Tessa is kidnapped, along with her friend Heather, while vacationing in Monterrey, Mexico. Both the bad and good guys suspect she has been smuggling drugs or is trying to make a drug buy. She is protected from what the other Mexican mafia guys want to do to her by bad guy Kris, and Tessa and Kris have very sexy moments as she is being held for ransom. But is Kris a good guy or bad guy? Tessa's heart and body don't seem to think that's important, and it's a very interesting storyline for the reader.

I give this one 4 stars and recommend it those who like romantic suspense and a hot alpha maybe-bad guy.

Thanks for reading!

When Tessa glanced up and saw Kris's breath taking face i knew i was in for one hell of a ride. Normally the cartel would not even make my reading list but i am so pleased I gave this book a chance. i was hooked the moment Kris took Tessa under his care. There was so much suspense and heat it made it impossible to stop readeing.

It's appropriate that this book is in an imprint named Ignite. The romance between Tessa and Kris is scorching. Both characters leap off the page. The chemistry between them is potent from their first eye contact to their final scene.

Tessa is a strong woman who the reader cheers for when she fight back during a kidnapping.

I'm hoping the next story in the series features Tessa's best friend, Moni.

Fantastic debut for Ms. Roberts.

I didn't love it, but I also didn't hate it. The first part kind of dragged a little. There was some hot sex, okay a lot of hot sex. The ending seemed a little rushed after the slow start. All the bad guys taken care of a little too neatly. Overall a good book. I wouldn't say no to a second book with her BFF, Moni.

Remind me never to go to Mexico with a friend. Yikes. Felt so bad for the heroine as she had to go through this. I liked how the agent tried so hard not only to protect her but to keep his cover in place. I'm not sure how many people who have the courage to try to do both.
