In the post-Break world of superpowers, Los Angeles is a city divided between the haves and the have-nots, the rich and the poor, the Capes and the Black Hats.
But there is a secret organization working in the shadows of the underworld. The Company focuses on illicit profit instead of mayhem or fame.
Clive Treeble isn't a Power. He isn't much of anything at all, other than a petty criminal struggling to hold on to his mother's house.
Until the day an old acquaintance reaches out with an offer. The Company needs a man for its latest heist. Succeed and Clive's future is assured. Fail and the city might not be big enough to hide in.
Stories From a Post-Break World are short tales that take place in the same post-apocalyptic superhero world as See These Bones and the rest of the Murder of Crows trilogy.
Chris began as a gleam in someone’s eye, but birth and childhood were quick to follow. He’s been fortunate enough to live in Spain, Germany, and all over the United States of America, and is busy planning a tour of the distilleries of Scotland.
He currently lives in Nevada with his angelic wife and ever-expanding whisky collection and occasionally ventures outside to peer upwards, mutter to himself about ‘day stars’, and then scurry back into the house.
Chris is the author of two series; The Murder of Crows and The Travails of John Smith. He frequently shares new content on his author website at https://christullbane.com.
Well written, good character development, and an overall solid story. Not as good as the storm in her smile, but a nice viewpoint from a non powered character.
More in the Crow universe. Like the characters, the view of the world. Every story builds this universe out more, in history and in depth, and I am grateful for that.
I needed a short distraction this morning and this story took me away and gave me the escape I needed. It was well rafted, compelling and so very, very good.
A fun little visit to our Post-Break World, even though far FAR too brief (more short story than novella in this case). But the connection to our growing understanding of, well, everything here makes it all worthwhile. My favorite part of this tiny stop-over is that the story flows primarily through the eyes of a 'normal' person - one of millions who has obviously not benefitted throughout life from this reality - whereas so much that has gone on before is naturally from the perspective of such a wide range of Powers or their foes.
Ye gods I want the final chapter of the trilogy in my greedy paws SO MUCH!!! Yes, as the author has planned, this will be a fine addition to whatever collection of accompanying tales is finally available. But wowzers, this just whet my appetite all that much more!
Enjoy!
(P.S. No "date read" added because I'm trying to reserve my challenge count for full[er]-length offers)
A nice underworld heist story with a backstory twist that makes the adventure a fun one. I enjoyed the take on post apocalypse crime in a world is supers and norms struggling to survive. Ok, not quite that grandiose but still a fun read.
a pretty solid short story within the world, learning of a fairly important character in the original trilogies backstory was interesting. I have to give credit to Chris Tullbane for making interesting main characters. The power system too in this world has been interesting too!
I probably won't read the queen of smiles story, but I'll try to knockout the other short stories when I have the chance. I've enjoyed my time in this universe.
Also, I have a lot of appreciation for Joseph Vernon, great narrator.
