This book is amazing. I loved every single short story. These stories are straight out of Black Mirror or Twilight Zone. Nick Orton’s The Transcript is a haunting, high-voltage collection of supernatural military fiction that takes readers to the edges of reality—where duty and the other worldly collide. Across eleven tightly written stories, Orton invites us into the eerie grid squares where warfighters not only face the horrors of combat, but also the chilling presence of something… else.
The first story out of the gate was mind blowing and intense. The visceral detail of death and stench of blood was horrific in the best way. This collection thrives in the space between grounded realism and supernatural dread. Each story is a reminder that courage doesn’t just live on the battlefield—it also emerges in the moments when reason falters and the unknown stares back. Orton taps into that internal conflict brilliantly.
Of the short stories Hunters from the Sky, Memories of Mon, The Phone call, The Transcript, Man’s Best Friend, and ending with Legion of the Damned were my absolute favorites. The first and last stories were bangers! What impressed me most is how Orton balances action with atmosphere. The supernatural elements never overwhelm the humanity of the characters. Instead, they serve as metaphors for unseen battles—grief, trauma, guilt—that linger long after the uniform comes off.
The Transcript is more than a collection of spooky war stories. It’s a salute to the resilience of those who serve, and a chilling reminder that not all enemies wear a face. Fans of military fiction and supernatural horror will find something special here.
A great collection of modern day supernatural stories set against a military backdrop. Nick Orton uses his military knowledge and experience to bring the reader fantastic tales. My two personal favorites from this collection are "A Feast Unseen in Ages" and "Legion of the Damned."
