I didn't enjoy this as much as the first two books but it was still a very addictive read. However I do think the villain was bad for no reason. RTC. My thoughts (some spoilers). I expected more from this after the massive cliffhanger at the end of book 2 but this was anticlimactic. It was way more straightforward than I thought it would be. Also this had too much spice for my liking. I don't like when there is spice in every chapter. However I could see the love between Ashley and her men. I particularly liked Nate with Ashley and their relationship was a slow-burn throughout the series. Going back to the plot none of the reveals shocked me and I feel like Jocelyn was bad for no reason. I especially don't understand why she would try to kill her own son multiple times. It didn't need to be done to achieve her ultimate goal. The ending was definitely anticlimactic and I did hear that this was the last book in the series but I ended up thinking it wouldn't be because there were so many loose ends. I feel like the ending was rushed and I didn't like it.
Sadly this one was bad ! I LOVED the first and second, I was so excited for this one specially with how the second one ended. Unfortunately I was very disappointed from the very first chapter. Everything felt out of place, forced and only spice filled. Coming from a person who LOVES smut in her books, this one didn’t even hit for me, not even the spice was good. The dynamic that felt so natural and delicious between the guys and Ashley in the first 2 books was simply non existent in this one. Nate who was my favorite because I always love the bad brooding bully type was also dull like the others for me. To begin with I couldn’t even completely remember the story/plot of the first 2 books so I had to go back to “Watch your Back” and listen to the last 3 chapters to put myself back in the story. Also I refused to read it when it came out because I listen to the first 2 and the full cast was phenomenal so I wanted to listen again, and also Corvin King….. I was so disappointed because the plot is non believable and sloppy “IN MY OPINIONNNNN” , the book is 80% smut, the relationship are shallow with no depth into their feelings, and finally when Nate gave in to his feelings for her it wasn’t what I expected….. I did not like the reverse sub/dom shit they got going and the explanation for was even more stupid. Basically I am sad but I didn’t like this book at all. The whole thing with Jocelyn was also a little too much, not enough to be full blown crazy villain and too much to be the whole plot of the book. I wish I liked but in fact I didn’t.
I had such high expectations for this book. And while it was okay it just fell flat for me. The plot got lost amongst the smut and everything and nothing happened all at once. I’m super disappointed 😭
it was okay, not my fave, but alright.... I gave books 1 & 2, 5 ⭐️ & this makes me so sad, but I wasn't vibing at all! I still have so many questions from books 1&2 that COULD have been answered & more questions that book 3 produced... I was just left wanting more, and not in the "im obsessed with them i need more" way.... I literally need more, I felt like I missed out on so much plot which was replaced by smut (and dont get me wrong, i love me some smut). Maybe my expectations were too high?
I’m so disappointed 😭😫I waited and counted down the days for this 3rd book to get the most boring plot and conclusion ever 😭😫🙄even the spice scenes did nothing for me. Some of the characters grated on my so much they was jus so annoying. There was no need for Carly to be able to speak so much when she gave nothing 😭😫
Okayyyy, this was ever so slightly disappointing. As in, I didn't get all the resolutions I was hoping for, and like many others said already, the smut took over the plot. That doesn't mean that I didn't like it though, just that I was hoping for a bit more.
Those first few chapters were really good and suspenseful, but once everyone got back together it started to go downhill. Not dramatically so, mind you, but enough for it to be noticeable.
To be honest, the entire second half felt rushed. I wouldn't have minded 50 more pages for things to be wrapped up, because there are so many loose ends.
For example that wasn't totally clear. Like what do you mean ?? I feel like I accidentally skipped a section of the book, but there's no section to be skipped, if that makes sense.
That was what I was looking forward to most, finding out more about that particular mystery and I don't feel satisfied. But maybe if we get a spinoff, we'll finally have the answers we need.
Anyway, I always think it's kinda funny when I rank the guys in book one, and nothing changes by the end of the series, despite the author's best efforts. Guess what happened here?
So, my final ranking (for those who don't feel like looking up my past reviews to see it):
Carter > Royce > Heath > Nate
And listen, Nate put up a good fight in this one, finally got his shit together, but I just didn't like him as much as the other three throughout the series so he's staying in last place. But he did grow on me, just a bit.
Devils backbone society overall rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
This books 🌶️ rating for me would be a 4, entirety of the series would be a 3!
You’re next tropes: * Why choose with a step brother involved 👀 * suspenseful plot * Secret society * Rich men that will 🔪 for their woman * One bed… and three occupants * Ducks, literally everywhere * Masked scene in the woods
Whewwww deep breath 😮💨
You’re next continues on from the absolutely diabolical cliffhanger at the end of watch your back - both you AND Ashley are thinking “what the f*ck” and trying to figure out what’s up & what’s down.
The twists and turns of this series were not where I thought it was going at all & that was the best part. Truly up until the very last 10% of book 3, I still had so many questions.
I continue to be on my knees for Royce D’arenberg. That man is 110% my new favourite Tate man ever, possibly my favourite mmc of all time🧎♀️➡️🧎♀️➡️🧎♀️➡️
What I didn’t expect: me to be putting the golden retriever of a why choose group on the bottom of the ladder. In this book Nate snuck up on me and claimed second place, followed by our branded psycho, Carter. I do still love heath but in this particular instance the nice guy is going to be finishing last.
This book was funny AF. I genuinely laughed multiple times. What do you mean Royce made an asphyxiation kink joke? 🤣
I’m trying to leave this spoiler free which is so hard because I reaaaaaallly just want to discuss Abigail 😭
But also….. Carly & the brothers? Pls Tate can we have them 👀
I really liked the first two books. However I was so tempted to stop reading about half way through. Everything felt forced at that point!!! Such a shame since I had high hopes for this! I was literally counting down the days until this book was released.
After the cliffhanger in the second book, I was feral to get my hands on the conclusion to the Devil's Backbone series. I was in the worst book hangover after Watch Your Back and I kept DNF'ing books because I kept comparing them to this series and I was desperate to know how the guy's would get Ashley back and understand what was actually happening.
I wish that I could say that You're Next was the conclusion that I was hoping for with this series but I can't. Starting this book, I had so many lingering questions about what happened to Abby, what did the DB society have to do with it all, and who/why a certain individual was so intent on hurting Ashley and the guys. I didn't feel like I got any solid answers to these questions and I still have more questions than answers. The conclusion of the story needed more time and everything wrapped up too quickly and easily. I also felt like like the plot got a little too far fetched for my taste. I don't really want to give too much away and spoil anything for anyone so I think I'll just leave it at that.
2.5 🌟 i have beef with this author!! this was so disappointing! i expected so much more but no the plot js got lost and there was basically only smut 😭 also the reason for the bad guy being the bad guy? i’m sorry what? no! i really liked book 1 and 2 and the plot a lot but this book was js dumpster fire after dumpster fire!!
SPOILERS DOWN BELOW ⬇️
honestly this was so so so so badddd like first u have ashley in that psych ward and Jocelyn tryna confuse the heck outa her, then u have Nate getting her out of there and miss ma’am goes back to fucking the whole friend group 😭 FANTASTIC! YAY LOVE THAT! 🙄 the murder attempts jocelyn planned were honestly so random and anticlimactic the only part that had me on the edge of my seat was when Jocelyn hypno-forced ashley to kill Nate but okay 🥹 also we literally didn’t get anything from Abigail or when Jocelyn got captured
i’m so mad bc ain’t no way i waited almost 2 months for this 😔😔😔
I absolutely loved the previous books in this series! The entire trilogy was good! Book 3 summarizes so perfectly! So much spice! The secrets get brought into the light! The characters are somehow more lovable. A perfect & true why choose. All these books need way more hype from booktok!
I absolutely love this series, book 1 (Dear Reader) and 2 (Watch Your Back) were 6 star reads for me and with those cliffhangers OOF, absolutely was dying for the last one. While this one doesn't fall into that 6 star range (just due to the ending feeling a bit rushed) I had a wonderful time, and absolutely LOVE the characters.
The audiobooks are chiefs kiss and I highly recommend them!
This series has been a whirlwind for me! I wasn’t sure if I was going to be sold on this world after book one, but boy was I wrong! After book 2 and the cliffy it left us on, you could say I was SAT for this finale. Now this series has so many good elements in it- the tension, slow burn, angst, suspense and of course spice all had me hooked. I especially love seeing Ash’s connections individually form with all of the guys which I think Tate nails in all of her Why Choose books. This book in particular got us some more Nate and while the dynamic between him and Ashley wasn’t what I was expecting…I wasn’t mad at it😉 Now while I did love the relationships and romance, I was the slightest bit disappointed that there wasn’t a more shocking ending/reveal. I know Tate James doesn’t typically write romantic suspense, but this series did read like it and I was on the edge of my seat for some crazy extra reveal with this book. All in all I ended up loving this series as I have with all of Tate’s and can’t wait to see what she has in store next!
I can confidently say this is my fave Tate James series so far. I’m thankful she didn’t make us wait long for the answers we desperately needed after Watch Your Back! I was like a feral raccoon waiting for this book!
This series was such a mind trip, Ashley and her men went through it! The groveling that took place in this book was top tier! I do however wish we got just a few more chapters into their life after the conclusion of everything that happened, but overall this was a fantastic wrap up to an amazing series!
If you want to read something that is psychological warfare this is the series for you! I loved all the ducking games, and the feral touch her and die energy in this book! The character growth from Nate was probably my favorite part of this book.
Thank you so much to Tate James and GD author services for the opportunity to read this pre-release in exchange for my honest review
It absolutely pains me to give this book 2 stars. This was one of my favorite series I've read so far. Dear Reader and Watch Your Back are two of my favorite books. this was just absolutely disappointing. The book felt like it was a completely different author and felt lazy like her Madison Kate series. My favorite characters that lived rent free in my mind for months are now ruined.
The way Ashley manipulated Nate into changing who he was to suit her disturbs me. I like a why choose, but not when someone goes against their comfort because they're pressured to do so. Yes, Nate is an adult and he could've walked away. But the way her and Royce manipulated him into doing pissed me off. I wanted so badly for Nate to either fight for her or walk away. Then she dismissed when he seemed to withdrawal because she didn't want him to change his mind, so selfish. Then she'd be like, let's talk about this, and then they wouldn't talk about it. Nate was done so dirty in this book, the only time Nate was Nate, was when he wanted to keep her tied up as a joke. Which was the only good part of that weird scene where she was kidnapped and they killed like 12 guys. So bizarre. Also Nate calling her duckling was not him, and cringey AF.
And Carter, one of my absolute favorite MMCs ever was reduced to nothing in this book. Ashley treated him like absolute trash. She was just so unlikeable in this book. How many times did Carter ask for one on one time with her and she just would play with his emotions. He was literally reduced to nothing in this book and it makes me so angry.
This book just didn't have the same vibe as the other two. Even the stupid games they were playing? All the supposed twists and turns were stupid, it was very hard to follow along and I found myself skimming a little bit because of how dumb it was. I could not wait for this book to end, which makes me so sad because it's literally my favorite series ever. Bummer. I'm actually going to pretend like this book never existed and it just ended on a cliffhanger and book two and I can just make up my own story. I will never forgive my Carter being done so dirty in this book.
Books 1 and 2 of The Devil’s Backbone Society had me completely hooked. The dark mystery, the questions, the tension — all of it built up to what I thought would be an explosive and revealing finale. Unfortunately, Book 3 left me disappointed and wanting more.
So many of the central mysteries that kept me turning pages went unanswered. Why was Jocelyn truly doing these things to the members? What exactly was Abby’s role — was she helping orchestrate the experiments, or was she another victim? The experiments themselves were teased so often, yet never fully explained. And Ashley’s mom — was her involvement really just about bitterness over Max’s divorce, or was there more to it? These threads were set up to be pivotal, but the resolution felt rushed and incomplete.
The romance arc wrapped up nicely, and I still enjoyed the writing style and pacing, but as a reader who invested in the society’s dark secrets, I needed answers that never came. The first two books built such an intriguing web of questions, and the finale fell short of delivering on that promise.
In the end, this series had incredible potential and strong moments, but Book 3 didn’t give me the closure I was hoping for.
Okay I think I have the same opinion as everyone else! And normally I don’t so this is cool I think.
While I still loved the whole series, this third book lacked a little bit? I expected a tiny bit more maybe? Maybe a plot twist? I kinda thought Carly was going to be in on something. Just… more from the ending of this story. Devil’s Backbone but didn’t have the backbone, ya’know? Had all of these conversations between the elder characters but no rhyme or reason for it, kinda thing?
Idk, maybe I was just expecting a tiny bit more because Tate always gives the best of the best when it comes to her books. But now, as a big 3 trad pub, they probably rushed her deadline and thus rushed the third book. Pisses me off ngl.
I still LOVED the mmc’s, and the fmc was fun, it just didn’t hit as good as the first 2 books did! Still a great series. Probably overall 4 ⭐️ series!
This book would be a 3.5 ⭐️ for me, with 4 🌶️! Fun group stuff 😮💨🫦 loooooved the group stuff lmao. Makes up for any other problems.
The final installment of the Devil’s Backbone Trilogy did not disappoint. I truly could not put this book down until it was over, just like the two books to come before.
It was a great finale to my new favorite Tate James series. It tied up all of our loose ends and gave Ash and her boys their much deserved happily ever after.
And the much anticipated Nate payoff was somehow better than I could have imagined. I don’t want to give too much away but if you’re into groveling and men who whimper, you’re in for a treat.
Perfect for anyone looking for the ultimate romance with four drool worthy men and a unique mystery that won’t let up on the suspense until the very end.
Highly recommend the whole trilogy!
Thank you Tate James for the early copy of this book!
♥️Romantic Suspense ♥️Why Choose ♥️Secret Society ♥️Enemies to Lovers ♥️Step Brother and Friends ♥️Final Book of the Trilogy
This trilogy was so good, I’m honestly shocked it isn’t more hyped! I’ve going to recommend this triology to everyone on my path because it hooked me from book one and never let me go.
Book three wrapped the series up beautifully. The much-anticipated Nate payoff? Somehow even better than I imagined. I absolutely loved spending time with Ashley and her men; each one brings something different to the table, and honestly… I wouldn’t be able to choose either 😂.
I devoured this final book in one sitting. At first, I thought the ending might be a little anticlimactic, but wow, the plot thickened and surged right back in and had me on the edge of my seat. The ending as a whole was incredibly satisfying.
My only real gripe is the epilogue. I was hoping for just a bit more insight into the group’s future. I’m still missing some of that closure.
This series was so good! I was absolutely hooked. This series was a complete emotional roller coaster. I loved how bad@ss the FMC was. I loved the MMCs even though at one point or another, I wanted to punch each of them, lol.
I did feel the ending felt a little rushed, and i wanted more from the epilogue. Still 100% recommend.
The narrators in these books are absolutely brilliant and did a fantastic job! I know it must be a lot of work for a full cast, duet style narration, but they really do make the best listening experience.
I would give the trilogy an overall 3. The potential was there but it seems the author lacked the skill? time? to really develop the thriller plot as well as build solid relationships between each of the characters. It just felt like a surface level wattpad story with a thriller side plot thrown in for a little fun. Disappointing because the idea was so good only for it to not be executed well. & The last book was especially even more insufferable to get through. The author said F the plot (as in things were happening but they were just nonsensical) and put in spice every chapter but didn’t even give us a true reverse harem scene until the very end& it was the only one.
