In my defense, I didn’t know he was an injured hockey star when I jumped on him. In the dark. In a blizzard. In his driveway. While I was wearing a bunny suit.
Do you know how hard it is to see out of those things?
I can’t blame him for thinking he was being mugged—and pinning me down with those strong arms and thick thighs.
Turns out Gabe Woods doesn’t like the flashing Christmas extravaganza I’ve created on his front lawn. Turns out he doesn’t like Christmas at all.
But then a fire leaves my drama kids without a theater for their Christmas play, and guess who’s the only person who can help me restage it on ice? Yup, Grumpy McHockeyhunk.
When late-night bickering on set sparks chemistry hot enough to melt the rink, might my frosty hockey grump thaw before curtain-up…?
The Hockey Grump Saves Christmas is a grumpy/sunshine, spicy romcom, set in a small town packed with quirky characters, bonkers holiday traditions, and feisty seniors you’ll want to adopt as your own.
Nicky Redford writes bladder-threateningly funny rom-coms with all the steam and all the feels.
She loves heroes who think they know what they want (they’re wrong, obviously), the feisty, independent, heroines who don’t take their crap, and the sparky banter that inevitably ensues.
Her idol is Nora Ephron, and if anyone tries to say When Harry Met Sally is not the greatest film ever made they’ll be treated to a very detailed explanation as to why they are wrong.
Nicky aims to bring you page-turning raunchy rom-coms that brighten your day, put a smile on your face, and make you need to sit on an ice pack.
3.5 stars. Which apparently makes me the anomaly in these reviews!
Don’t get me wrong I’m one of those reviewers who believes 3 stars still means the book was good but there were just a few too many things keeping it from being excellent!
First things first this book is funny, it’s cute, I said “awww” a few times, I laughed out loud a few more, I had a good time, but…
Gosh some of it was a bit cringe 😬. I’m sorry, I’m sorry I know cringe is relative but I defy you to read the first (and last for that matter) sex scenes in this book and not internally cringe even a little bit!
Anyway, is The Hockey Grump Saves Christmas a good natured frolic through the season with a cast of colourful characters? Yes it is. And if you like super grump x sunshine, a bit of grovelling, and insta-love (seriously it was like a week) then pick it up and add it to your Holiday TBR! Just remember, I warned you about the cringe 😘.
‘’Choosing ice cream is like choosing life … There are so many options. But you can only pick what is right in the moment’’
The quote above is from the bonus epilogue of this book and I’m obsessed🤣
Nicky, you have done it again, I have been so excited for this book and seeing you work on it on your Instagram stories every single day just created so much anticipation for me and it did not disappoint!
I didn’t read many Christmas books last year, I couldn’t seem to get into them, but this one had me hooked from the meet cute! So funny and just so Nicky! Major, major romcom vibes and absolutely hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
The final scene in the book?? Oh my god I nearly cried 🤣 so funny and so emotional at the same time!
I love Gabe & Natalie so much, they’re the perfect mix of grumpy x sunshine. Gabes nickname for Natalie…. I loved it🫠🫠🫠
I loved being back in Warm Springs and getting glimpses of characters from The Dashwood Billionaire series (Max & Polly the OG’s)🫠
Thank you for this ARC Nicky and congratulations on another amazing book release!
Read this if you love:
- Small Town - Grumpy x Sunshine - Dual POV - Sports romance - Christmas hating MMC - Christmas loving FMC - ‘Dislike’ to lovers
I received this book as an ARC, but I am voluntarily leaving a review 😀
Oh, my goodness!!!! That final play scene.....to die for!! My eyes tickled, my funny bone tickled, and my joy was almost as great as Natalie and Gabe's! Oh, how I wish I could see that in real life!!! And the Christmas pig!!! And the bunny!! And Gabe's nickname for Natalie: Bugs!!! Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!!!!
I received an ARC of THE HOCKEY GRUMP SAVES CHRISTMAS by Nicky Redford. I was not paid for my review.
Oh Nicky...you have done it again!! I started with a snort laugh that continued all through the story, along with plenty of steam and romance, of course! The Hockey Grump Saves Christmas is a hysterical and steamy, instalove, opposites-attract, grumpy-sunshine, Christmas sports romantic comedy. Gabe is a hunky, grumpy, scroogy, injured hockey player. Natalie is a sweet and adorable Christmas ray of sunshine. The meet cute was hysterical, the cameos of the some of the Dashwoods and Mrs. B was amazing and that ending!!!! OMG, I loved everything about it. This was such a funny, feel-good Christmas romance.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
As always with Nicky’s books, this romcom is full of quirky characters, bonkers situations and steamy good times! And no slow burn here — the things are heating up in this one despite the freezing temperatures, and I don’t know how they wouldn’t with a guy like Gabe Woods (hehe I see what you did there with the last name Nicky 😉😉). This man had been made for me, and I’m not exaggerating — see the dedication.
The story is light and you will breeze through it giggling and fanning yourself. Believe me, as someone who is going through the most anxious time of my life so far, this book had been my treat at the end of each hard day. Even if I could read one chapter I would fall asleep calmer and with a smile on my face.
That is why I only give you one quote this time, and it’s the one that spoke to me the most as it mirrored some of my anxiety triggers in these past weeks. I swear I almost cried when I read it, and that is proof that to each of us any book would speak in its own way, and impact us differently.
Anyway what I was trying to say is that if you’re hungry for a light, spicy and hilarious holiday read — this is the book for you! And if you like your men gruff and grumpy and bearded then you don’t have any excuse not to read The Hockey Grump Saves Christmas.
Now that I said what needed to be said, I’m back on my mental health break. I’m still reading but it’s tough. I don’t keep a tbr or a plan and just try to find any book that will suck me in enough to want to spend my non-existing energy on it. See you all more (hopefully) in the new year!
She did it again. Nicky Redford did what she does best. Making me laugh from the very first page. And she delivered another absolutely cute and laughable meet-cute of the MCs right in the first chapter 🤩
You know Warm Springs? This crazy small town a couple of hours north of New York City? No? OK, this town is fictional. Unfortunately 😞 I love this town. The residents are all so f*cking crazy. Positively of course 😁 I loved being back in Warm Springs. Back? This is a standalone, isn't it? Yes, it is. BUT book 2 of the Dashwood Billionaires series was already set in Warm Springs. You don't need to have read the book to follow this one. They aren't connected otherwise. But I LOVED seeing a few of the residents again. First and foremost Mrs. B. God, this old lady 🩷 There are a few more, but yes, we get a bit of Polly, Max, and 👶 🤩 YAY.
You want to know why this town is so crazy? They have very crazy traditions 🤣 For example who needs a Christmas 🎄 when you can have a ... noooo 🤣 won't tell you 😎 But it's soooo good 🤣🤣🤣
I so loved Gabe. His grumpiness. His hate for Christmas. His hotness 🥵 And his love for Natalie, even though he wouldn't say he does love her 😎 She is such a wonderful person. She loves to make other people happy. A people pleaser 😎 Oh, and I Ioved his special "hobby" 😁 I don't think there are many 🔥 hockey players who love watching National Geographic, are they? 🤔
And the end 🩷🤣🩷🤣🩷 You would think it's done but no. It takes an end as good as the beginning 😁
My favorite side character is definitely Abigail. I so loved this 8 years old girl 🩷 But of course, I loved Aunt Lou, too. For obvious reasons 😉
I would love to come back to Warm Springs again. Maybe with Frankie and the donkeys🫏??? Oh please 🙏 Because I know a certain author who would love to write a book with a donkey sanctuary 😉
The Hockey Grump Saves Christmas is the newest Romantic Comedy from Nicky Redford and it’s such a great holiday read, I had a lot of fun reading it and really liked Natalie and Gabe’s story.
After a disastrous first meeting where he just wanted some peace and quiet and she decorated his home for Christmas and jumped on him with a bunny costume on, to say Natalie and Gabe don’t like each other would be an understatement, but they are forced to to spend a night together in his new home and can’t deny they are attracted to each other. When Natalie tricks Gabe into helping her with children’s theatre play on ice, they realize they might have feelings for each other, but with Gabe returning to his life as a hockey star and Natalie moving across the country, they need to decide whether they are ready for a relationship.
This book was so much fun, I was laughing out loud from the first chapter because Gabe and Natalie’s first meeting was hilarious. I really liked our main characters, the way Gabe was grumpy and hated everything related to Christmas (but for a good reason) and Natalie was just a sunshine FMC who lived for Christmas decorations and traditions made them polar opposites but so perfect for each other and I loved their romance. Their relationship definitely didn’t have a good start, but their attraction was so strong I could feel it and they just couldn’t stay away from each other, I loved their scenes together and their banter had me laughing out loud a few times. I also really liked the town and its history and traditions, the way the author described everything was so interesting and I found myself wanting to know what happens next and the way it fit with Natalie and Gabe’s story at the end was perfect.
The Hockey Grump Saves Christmas is a really great romantic comedy and a perfect read for Christmas time, I had a lot of fun reading it and definitely recommend Gabe and Natalie’s story to everyone.
---
Nicky does it again with this book: she fills me with comfort and joy with her characters. Coming back to Warm Springs is like a hug and how nice it was to come back at Christmas time.
The story of Natalie and Gabe was beautiful, they had their first meeting in the funniest way that only Nicky can do with her writing, after that they had to get stuck at his house because of the snow and they start to become "friends", a bunch of funny things happen that made me laugh, the play, the kids, Gabe being all grumpy but at the same time seeing the good side, the romance between these two was full of many feelings, it was just beautiful, just like a Christmas book should be (they should make a movie of this book).
The reason I didn't give it a full rating was mostly because "the why" Gabe hates Christmas and that would be my only but, because with everything else it was a good book.
📌 I received an e-arc, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.
"Despite the gut-wrenching, chest-aching awfulness of this situation, I can't keep my lips from curling into a slight smile."
This was a fantastic start to my Christmas/holiday reads! I always approach ARCs (and this was an ARC, thanks to the author for providing me with this one in exchange for the honest opinion) a bit warily, but this one had my attention from the very start. The ride I was taken on was so good, I couldn't stop reading. It was genuinely funny and quirky, the characters were so realistic and well developed even in the silly situations they found themselves in. The small town characters and background set perfect vibes that I could easily imagine being transferred to the big screen because I just know it would be hilarious. Still, our main guys - Gabe and Natalie shine bright with their grumpiness and cheerfulness, respectively, and bring out the best in each other. Without revealing too much of the turns the story takes I have to say that every single choice the author made about the direction of it felt so natural and necessary. I especially loved how they formed a strong and intuitive bond and could read each other so effortlessly. I just had such a great time with them!
Thank you so much to Nicky Redford for an eARC copy of The Hockey Grump Who saved Christmas.
This story reminded me so much of a sweet Hallmark Christmas movie. I definitely got all the vibes in the first half of the story but then the second half was my favorite. I loved that Natalie was a drama/theater teacher and I loved her love for her students and community. Gabe tried so hard to make himself appear like a grump but he ended up being the sweetest marshmallow.
Gabe is staying at the new house he recently purchased to heal an injured shoulder from hockey as well as to get away from Christmas. Unbeknownst to Gabe he's about to run into the person in town with the most Christmas spirit, in a bunny costume. Natalie flips Gabe's world upside down but he also has her questioning her move to New Orleans for a new job when she clearly loves her town and what she does.
The only caveat is that everything big happens within a week or two. I typically don't like short timelines but with the way the pacing was it actually felt longer.
Now I'm kind of hoping Natalie's cousin Wyatt gets a story!
In true Nicky style, this book is full of sarcasm, laugh out loud moments, and the right amount of smut to melt the ice from your windscreens, or down under here, require one to crank up the air con. Did I love Gabe, yes, yes I did.
Gabe is our hockey grump, on sabbatical recovering with an injury, and trying to escape all things Christmas related. Imagine is horror, on being accosted by Natalie who is oozing Christmas out of every pore, and she has thrown this enthusiasm all over the house Gabe has escaped too. So, within the first chapter you are bound to be crossing those legs and laughing.
Throw in a downed tree and a need to stay overnight with said Grump, and the Christmas confetti Cyclone Natalie applied, and you get a sense of how this book will go.
There is an attraction along with ALOT of banter, unique powers of persuasion and kids. Gabe finds himself roped in to helping with the towns production of a retelling of an infamous story involving a pig and attractions on both sides that made me fall in love with Gabe more. I just love how Nicky manages to meld together truly hilarious moments, relatable characters and spice that makes for the perfect all rounder. Loved this Christmas delight that Nicky has gifted us with, and highly recommend.
I have not laughed SO hard in the first chapter of a book in a VERY long time, if ever! Gabe and Natalie's meet cute is brilliant! Nicky Redford is really an amazing Romcom Author!
Gabe, with all his grinchy-ness, weaseled his way right now into my heart so quickly! And Natalie was such a cutie-pie as well! Her backstory is so sad, and yet uplifting (odd combination, I know), but considering everything, she has really turned out to be a fabulous person! And I love her growth as a character through this book, and I love how she eventually stands up for herself, and accepts her true place, and her true character.
Gabe and Natalie work so well together. Their banter is brilliant, and their connection is intense, and so heartwarming!
SO many fun things.
And then there's the scene where Gabe is honest with his parents. Oh the heart-twinges, and the hope that everything will turn out OK, etc.
A great range of emotions are covered through the story, and it's a fun ride that I would love to relive again in the future. :)
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
My first Nicky Redford book, and might I say it was an absolute SMASH. So happy to have received an ARC of this one! It's been a long time since I've read a real romcom, and this actually made me chuckle out loud. The creativity, and sometimes downright absurdity of this story was so much fun, (honestly idk how Nicky came up with some of that lol). The perfect small town holiday romcom, that will be sure to warm you up this winter season! 🥰
🐇 Grumpy x Sunshine 🎁 Small Town 🎅🏼 He HATES Christmas (she loves it 🤭) 🎄 Hockey Player x Kids Drama Teacher 🐷 Bonkers Festive Traditions
As the title of this would suggest, Gabe our MMC was in fact grumpy 😅. But like grummpyyy grumpy. The opening scene where he is driving to his new house, hoping for a Christmas free getaway and getting bombarded by the most Christmas decor he very well has ever seen, honestly almost made me pee from laughter. He HATES Christmas and makes it very well known in the way he describes the decor and I loved every second of his grumpiness.
Now Natalie our FMC, was just as fun. She was bubbly and charismatic as I expected, but she also had a bit of an edge to her when provoked by Gabe that really made me love her. It made the banter and tension between the two of them to die for too! 🤭 I really loved her character development, and how she learned to stand up for herself in the end. A very relatable character overall.
Nicky's creativity in her writing honestly knows no bounds. I really felt like I was a part of this small town, living in this crazy little Christmas wonderland straight off a Hallmark set. I absolutely loved the town, all of the many side characters, the Christmas play, the adorable children, and the silly nature this story had to offer. There really wasn't anything not to love in this cute holiday romance! Check it out now! 🎄
When Nicky first told me she had written a hockey/ Christmas romance, I think I actually squealed 😂 She never fails to make me laugh and smile when I’m reading her books 🥰
Gabe is the ultimate Christmas-hating grump. He just wants peace and quiet to recover from his shoulder injury. Natalie is a bright, cheery, Christmas-loving drama teacher. They clash and bicker right from the start but the banter between these two had me cackling.
Seeing Gabe help Natalie and the kids with the Christmas performance was so sweet. It was so lovely to see him soften up 🥹 The kids in Warm Springs melted me, especially Abigail. I loved her personality so much. She had so much sass for an eight year old 🤭
Tropes include: 🎄hockey player x drama teacher 🎄grumpy x sunshine 🎄small town romance 🎄lots of laughs and giggles 🎄feisty seniors 🎄hilarious kids’ Christmas play
If you want a feel good rom-com that will absolutely warm your heart then give this a go!
Wanting to get away for the holidays and spending a quiet peaceful no nonsense festive holiday was Gabe's idea of heaven. Buying the cottage at the end of the road with no others in sight was perfect. He hated recuperating from his injury and this was his home away from hockey. No No No who had put all these lights and decorations on his house, he didn't do decorations. Stepping out of his car he's surprised to be assaulted by a life-size Rabbit. Natalie was looking forward to the surprise on the kids faces. Except this wasn't the owners, who was this stranger who she'd just jumped on. Ending up on the floor with the hugh man wasn't what she'd expected and now she could stand. This starts the funniest story I've read in a while. The characters are so funny yet at thecsame time grumpy. Having a grumpy hockey player who hates Christmas help with a kids festive play has an hilarious outcome. Sit back and enjoy a grump mets sunshine festive read
This book is so cute and funny and spicy and sweet! Seriously, I loved both of the main characters instantly. The first few chapters had me laughing nonstop and I just knew that with their chemistry, we were in for a treat!
Nicky does such a great job creating tension between her characters! The buildup to the first kiss (and all subsequent kisses)? Fantastic! Natalie is such a relatable FMC and Gabe is the perfect grump turned softie.
Definitely check out this story if you love: -open door romance -grumpy x sunshine (Christmas Edition) -Quirky, Small Towns -The most hilarious of meet cutes -A touch of forced proximity -Opposites Attract -Hilarious traditions -Perfect Epilogues.
I definitely underestimated the weight of the “Grump” in the title. Gabe Woods is next level and can be a real A-Hole sometimes (emphasis on sometimes). BUT it does not take away from the tender care and romantic side that is hiding behind Gabe’s Christmas-Hating exterior. He has strong and thick thighs, tall build and a neat trimmed beard. Gabe Woods is swoon-worthy and sensual.
Natalie Bourne is a people-pleaser, a woman with spirit and a lover of Christmas (unlike Her Grump). She is gentle and happy, and despite Her pleasing personality learns to stand up for Herself (and the community).
Gabe and Natalie learn a lot from each other and show character growth in this Novel. The spice in THGSC is next level and what I believe as some of Nicky’s greatest work. The chemistry between Gabe and Natalie is incredible, SO alluring and nubile.
This book is comical and laughter is to be expected, followed by blushing and moments that make you “AWW” out loud. I recommend this Novel to EVERYONE and here are the tropes;
Grumpy vs Sunshine Small Town Romance Hockey Romance Dislike to Lovers Christmas Romance
This is such a wonderful Christmas Rom-Com! Redford always delivers well written romances with the perfect balance of humor and this Christmas themed rom com is no exception. Our main characters Natalie and Gabe came alive thru the pages of this book and the storyline was smooth flowing and captivating with so many memorable and laugh out loud scenes that are guaranteed to please. I absolutely adored this book, and I can't wait for more from Redford!!! Definitely a favorite author of mine for guaranteed rom-com gold!

Adorable and sweet: This book was absolutely perfect! I instantly fell in love with this crazy small town, its bonkers Christmas traditions and wonderful characters. Gabe and Natalie made an awesome couple and I really liked how they both had flaws and little idiosyncrasies that they had to work through. All in all, this was entertaining and great fun and now I can't wait to see what this talented author comes up with next. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I absolutely loved this book! Hockey romance with a grumpy MMC, yes please!
Gabe was a sexy and grumpy hockey player trying to get away from Christmas. Buuuuut he runs into Natalie who is a lover of Christmas!
Watching him transform from a grumpy hockey player into a sweet and loving man was great. I loved reading how he transformed. The way the kids got into his cold heart. The love he developed for Natalie. The way he made kept telling her she deserves the best and nothing less.
The town is Christmas crazed and has some wacky traditions, but I loved it all.
Ugh this was so cute I almost died. I had such a goofy smile on my face when I finished it.
First, I love hockey romances and the MMC Gabe was 💯 top tier hockey-book-boyfriend material. The FMC Natalie was ridiculously cute and, as she would say, a perfect amount of "bonkers".
And the small town with a pig-themed christmas tradition, replete with a giant pig lighting ceremony?? That's some high quality stuff right there. The kids drama production on ice was hilarious, would totally attend IRL 😂
I won't get into the summary of this book as that's not what I'm about.
I really liked this Christmas book and Gabe and Bugs are so opposite, that they're so perfect together. Gabe's hating and Natalie's loving just grow's on you and their chemistry is undeniable right from the start. Turns out that Gabe just needed his person and Bugs was it.
Overall, a great read and would recommend this to anyone.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I knew from the moment I read the opening scene that this book would have me laughing, swooning and falling in love with the characters.
Gabe and Natalie are total opposites and were a fantastic couple to read. Their banter, undeniable attraction, grumpy/sunshine and overall dialogue was fantastic!
They will get you in the holiday spirit and have you laughing all the way! A fun and fantastic book!
I saw this as I was browsing for something to read yesterday, and I bought it on a whim. I started it this morning and almost didn’t want to stop for lunch because it was that good!
Gabe and Natalie met in funniest way and I love how she warms him up and he lets her shine all while supporting her for who she is. This book is hilarious and heartwarming. Just give it a try, it’ll make you feel great!
And I'll do a better job reviewing what is probably my favorite holiday read for 2024 as soon as I finish my Twelve Days of Christmas list of books (5 more to go).
I don't think you can beat this one for a holiday rom-com! With each page turned, Gabe and Natalie stole my heart, kept the joy and laughter coming -- raising my spirits and had me full-out ho-ho-hoing with tears streaming down my cheeks from start to finish.
Great book I read it in 1 sitting as I couldn't put it down, it was really funny although at times I think that was accidentally.
The way that Gabe and Natalie meet is funny and that energy continues throughout. He lives up to the Grumpy title of the book but she tries to drag him out it.
It's a lush read and a great way to spend the afternoon.

My second book by Nicky Redford, not disappointed at all! Great romcom to read for Christmas time. So funny and cute. Injured hockey player Grump Gabe wants peace and quit but it is not possible when sunshine Natalie is around. And crazy traditions - OMG. So funny, so crazy - great reading. Enjoyed it!.

Nicky Redford has done it again with another five star read!!!
