Big Damn Heroines

Rate this book
Big Damn Heroines is a celebration of the plus-sized woman. Specifically, the plus-sized woman kicking ass. The media perception of the strong female protagonist is almost invariably thin, but powerful women come in all shapes and sizes, and it's time that they had a chance to stand up and be recognized. The four stories in this anthology show that bigger women can be more than comic relief or the dumpy best friend. They can be a force to be reckoned with all on their own.

"Machine Gun" Mercy is a member of the Valkyries, an all-female squad of Roughnecks patrolling the outer solar system. When a distress call comes in from the penal colony on Titan, Mercy and the Valkyries descend to confront the Terror on Saturn VI. Porter has followed the career of vigilante superhero Firebird with great interest, if only because Firebird is actually Blaise, once her dearest friend. Firebird seems to be self-destructing, though, and though Porter tries to ignore it, she finds herself drawn into the Folie à Deux, a shared madness that threatens to swallow them both. The widening Distance of Memory following the recent death of their fourth member has left surviving bondmates Zaezon, Margellian, and Corynteea lost and uncertain. But when they come across evidence of a band of Renders attacking villages, they must find their way together as three in order to complete their mission. Finally, Cat, a Finder gifted with the ability to locate objects and people with preternatural ease, is contacted by former lover Mirsagh to help track down a merchant's son. As they follow the man's trail, old feelings—good and bad—resurface, and Cat is faced with the choice to let Mirsagh be the Finder's Keeper again.

Did someone say tentaclesex?

For me, I found no duds in this bunch. :D
My rating average: 4.125

A Bargain by D.K. Jernigan - Rating: 5 hearts

This. This is what I am looking for in tentaclesex books. It's quite a tale with a historical/fantasy feel. Julian is the unwanted second son of a grieving fisherman family. His older brother Paul was the perfect specimen of manliness...unfortunately Paul died at sea. His father thinks Julian is useless and bars him from fishing with his crew due to being weak, skinny and not manly enough. The sea is in Julian's bones. He wants nothing more to prove his worth to his hateful father and get on his father's ship. One night feeling morose for himself, Julian spies a sea creature, a leviathan named Kith. Kith bargains with Julian, a kiss for a gold ring. Julian sees the ring as his ticket back into his unpleasant father's good graces. Once they kiss, Julian finally acknowledges the secret part of himself that desires men. He and Kith develop a friendship with the promise of more through bartering sexual favors for baubles. However, Julian's plans backfire. Kith and Julian's relationship development was quick, their sex was extremely hot and I dug the ending. Strong start to the anthology. Plan on checking out other work from this author.

Chained to the Wheel by Angelia Sparrow - Rating 3.75 Hearts

A story told from the bad guy's perspective! In a futuristic setting, Erik "The Wheelman" Ezekiel is a paralyzed, wheelchair bound cyber-evil genius, a lord in cyberspace, feared in both real life and on the Net. He runs EIT, a cyber net company that rules with an iron fist. His most devoted followers are called Immortals, voluntary quadruple amputees on life support tubes that live on the Net (cyberspace) and follow the Wheelman's every command and wish. A cyber-thief named Timberwolf has broken into EIT's codes and Erik wants Timberwolf found, his real identity revealed and brought to him in real life. What a cyber-evil genius wants, a cyber-evil genius gets. Timberwolf is revealed to be Niall O'Neill, a young gay submissive with puppy dog blue eyes that needs to be serve to a Master. Erik is cruel, of course and forces Niall to serve him as his personal slave, become an Immortal or die. Niall chooses to serve him. Are you wondering when the tentacles come into play? On the Net, where Erik can change his body at his whim and he comes up with some inventive tentacles. Hands down best use of tentacles as cock and ball torture. A tentacle sound inserted in a...well you catch the drift. However, the story was confusing at first which lowered my rating. But I can muddle through the weird and confusing a lot and find something that works. In this case, the Master/slave relationship worked for me. Erik is not someone that could be romanticized. He's evil, takes good care of his pet and devises some kinky ways to play. I got what the author tried to portray. Overall enjoyable with the exclusion of the rough start.
Award: Kinkiest use of a penis sound and cock ring!

A Home Among the Stars by Gryvon - Rating: 4 Hearts

Not my first time in the Gryvon tentacle rodeo and this one is definitely the stronger of the two. But there's a recurring issue I'll bring up later. Aaron, is a young human alien from the puritanical planet called Opus Dei. Aaron ran away from his home planet because he was gay and did not want to be found and/or killed. He escapes with help to a different planet with a job lined up with Ilyan Osserman, an ancient hedonistic alien with a serpentine-like scaled upper body and huge tentacles on the lower body. Aaron is so happy to escape the oppression on Opus Dei that working for his surly boss doesn't phase him in the least. With help from the sneaky alien Tiberius and funny humanoid alien bartender Liana, Aaron gets to learn about a wilder side of life. Aaron is a virgin after all and innocent in a lot of things. His naivete, the characters (it's the best use of multiple characters, IMO) and of course the sex were the strong points of the story. And it's also mpreg. But no clear explanation is given about the mpreg which is disappointing. This is the second Gryvon tentacle story where the ending is rushed, great ideas are introduced but the follow through comes up lacking. I wished the same detail given into the beginning and world building would have been given for the crux of the story. It was a rushed, fading in and out jumble. I'd think detail into the birthing process and the entire pregnancy would have been great. And even with my complaints...I'm still rating high because everything else was that good. The lone sex scene is my favorite sex scene of the entire anthology. Hint: Three tentacles, creative stretching and penetration. *shudders*
Award: Favorite Tentacle Penetration

Deadline by Peter Hansen - Rating: 3.75 Hearts

This is the only story that features an established couple (not my go-to-type of read), a mated team of human and alien. Dr. Jonah Cheng and his alien husband Othosh are on Oshoth's home planet. Jonah has been stationed in Othosh's home planet for years and fell for a native. Jonah was the only one stationed on the exploratory team. He was charged with cataloging Othosh's people, culture and anything other information he could find on the planet. The couple have great dialogue, snarky and sexy. Othosh's innocence about the human culture and his disdain for working all the time was adorable. I love the alien's stance on porn too. The couple gets discovered and a human team mistakes an incident that happens between the married pair. Luckily it's quickly resolved. They have sex. The end. There wasn't any back story on how the two first met or married. There was a brief mention of the alien's nervousness in their earlier months. I must say the tentacle anatomy was the strongest. The author has them all over the body, not just the bottom half. It's a cute, romantic, funny finish for a strong tentacle anthology. No duds among the lot, some hiccups and minor gripes but overall a recommended read for tentacle enthusiasts especially.
Award: Best Tentacled Body (most inventive with alien tentacle anatomy)

Happy Reading!! *wriggles*

Hey, Goodreads, how about you add a feature so when your readers are brain dead and end up with two editions of the same book on their shelves they can combine the comments on one with the review they wrote on the other. Because I'm not getting any smarter.

A great bunch of short stories with lovely tentacle action. Gryvon's was my favorite, although the end was kind of wtf? Maybe as with the Weight of a Gun story there will be a followup to clarify the situation.

I don't read many anthologies, the shorter stories usually not enough to satisfy me, but when Justin brought this to my attention, I couldn't resist. Tentacles! And I wasn't disappointed :D

A Bargain- 3.5 Stars- A simple tale, with wonderfully sexy tentacle love. Kith was awesome and I loved how we were shown his reactions to Julian.
Historical Fantasy

Chained to the wheel- 2 Stars- There was a lot of world building going on, maybe too much for such a short story. Much of the story takes place in a virtual environment which had some interesting aspects, but I didn't like the real world at all.

The MCs weren't likeable, either. Especially Ezekial, who was creepy and cruel. *shudders* It was difficult to grasp Niall's character at first, as the things he did online did not match his real life personality. As his personality became more clear, I found it difficult to connect with him, which is odd, because I've liked similar characters in other stories.

Despite all that, there was one scene that was so freakishly, creepily pervy, that I gave this story an extra star. I wasn't sure if I hated it or loved it, but I was definitely fascinated, and uncomfortable.

Overall, though, I think this was just too dark for me.
Dystopia, dub-con, slave

Home Among the Stars-4 Stars- Awesome world building. I would love to read more stories in this universe. Great characters and nice tentacle action, too. The ending was a bit too rushed, though. I needed answers! Like how did that even happen?! I definitely needed more. Minor editing issues, but I didn't even care.
Science fiction, aliens

Deadline-4 Stars- It's hard to choose, but this might be my favorite story in the collection. Othosh was a fantastic character and Jonah made a great narrator. I loved them as a couple; their relationship was sweet, tender and very steamy. I also loved all the little details that showed us how hot they were together. And bonus points for the humor that made me grin. *remembers Othosh learning what porn was*

I know the individual ratings don't average out to 4 stars, but with this collection, I felt the whole was better than the parts :)

3.5 stars. The first book was merman x human. A the fisherman story where the merman grants the wish of the boy and the boy gives fisherman what he wants. Mutual transaction.

2.75 stars Second book is just too dark and weird for me (kidnapping, octopus, hackers, there’s also the hologram where you connect your brain your mind will enter the world of internet where you can do whatever, become whatever. Like sword art online but not really).

“And then Erik came.Unlike a regular octopus, which would have a hectocotylus in one of the arms for fertilization, apparently all of the Wheelman's arms were modified. Thick bluish slime filled all three orifices, slicked his wrists and ankles, and covered his chest. Niall choked and sputtered, feeling as if he were drowning. It was worse than not having the gills had been. He swallowed and swallowed, fearing there would be no end to the amount of it. Bloated and sick, he hung in the four tentacles, trying not to throw up.”
😅🤮
Third book I’m not sure if I’m going to read it

UM Sunday Funday Buddy Read that solidified the fact that I am totally a fan of tentacles.

A Bargain by D.K. Jernigan – 4 Stars

A really good story set in the true vein of an old fashioned fairy tale. Dark, but not hopeless and with a tragic MC that broke my heart and made me feel every wrong that was thrown at him. The bargain Julian strikes with the sea-man (yeah, I snickered a little like a 12 year old at that), is supposed to ingratiate him with his father once again. It starts out promising for Julian, but his old man is one cold hearted bastard and the bargain with the sea-man, Kith, turns into something completely different than what Julian had planned. As with any good fairy tale, it gets much worse before it gets better and just when I thought Julian was a goner, the sea-man and his tentacles show up. Even though there was fairy tale insta-love/lust the connection between Julian and Kith was pretty hot and I liked it muchly.

Chained to the Wheel by Angelia Sparrow – 2 Stars

This one started out . . . strangely. There was a lot of information on the world this was set in, but not a lot of explanation. So it felt like the first part was information overload, too much for a short story, so that I felt there was no way ALL of this was going to end up being relevant and for me, it wasn’t. I really should have felt worse for Niall than I did, but there wasn’t enough about the characters to get me invested into their futures.

A Home Among the Stars by Gryvon – 3.5 Stars

Now this one had some good world building. There was enough information so I knew exactly why Aaron had to leave his home planet and I felt all his hopes and fears he felt as he was rocketed off to a new life. Even though Ilyan, his employer doesn’t have a lot of page time, I still liked his character and how he was with Aaron. The whole sci fi setting of the story was really interesting and I would love to read a full length story based on this short. Ilyan may not have been the typical lead I read about and I had a bit of a Jabba the Hut picture in my head about him, Aaron loved him and that was good enough for me. The ending was too rushed, a LOT happened in the last bit of the story. I would have liked a bit more of a fleshed out ending because I liked the character and the world and wanted more of it.

Deadline by Peter Hansen – 4.5 Stars

With a line like, “Porn is the artistic representation of recreational sex”, is it any wonder that this was my favorite story in the anthology? Deadline could have been five times as long and I still would have wanted more. The banter between Othosh and Jonah was witty, smart and sexy. As much as Jonah taught Othosh about humans, Othosh taught Jonah just as much with his insight and observations. I loved the two of them together and the loyalty they had for one another. There was just the right amount of information about the world they lived in and the mission they were on to read easily without being overburdened by too much detail. This would make a great full length story and reading more about Othosh and Jonah would be something I would look forward to.

I’m always up for a story about tentacled creatures, but mostly I’m hoping for something new and creative. Let’s see what this anthology has to offer… The review for each short story is only under spoilers to save space, there shouldn't be any real spoilers contained...

A Bargain by DK Jernigan (quasi historical/fairytale-ish feel, fishermen, sea creatures) 3 stars

Chained to the Wheel by Angelia Sparrow (dystopian/alt-uni/futuristic, internet/virtual play, slave/pet, dub-con) 2 stars

A Home Among the Stars by Gryvon (alt-uni/sci-fi/fantasy, space travel, aliens, intercultural/interspecies/alien love) 2.5 stars

Deadline by Peter Hansen (sci-fi, intercultural/interspecies, alien sex, tentacles, married couple, cultural tensions) 3.5 stars

The Wrap-Up:
With all of these short stories, the go-to was the kinky tentacle sex. Yo, duh, that’s what we’re here for, after all. But, there still has to be a compelling well-put-together plot to give it context. All of the stories suffer from being too short, too undeveloped, too confusing, and ultimately, disappointing. Points are given for a nice try, but this tentporn collection is not nearly as strong as some others out there. If you’re so inclined, I’d recommend Bump in the Night for some real salacious, horrific tentacle fun.

There is a large woman in every one of these stories and she is often pivotal, potent, and adept at pleasuring. Is anyone surprised? I am not and quite pleased that substantial women get to be heroines, leaders, and passionate lovers.

Terror on Saturn VI

This story focuses on Mercy, a soldier recovering from a devastating leg wound and returned to service early to be with her platoon of large women for a critical mission. She partakes in the only sexual interlude with a fellow guy soldier. Nevertheless, this story clearly presents strong, large women more than capable for this difficult task. Edge of my seat exciting!

Folie à Deux

This story is a trip and a half times ten! I found my connection to reality sorely tested yet this seemed to really allow me to fold into the intricacies of this tale making it a top notch read.

Porter is our large woman here and she has enough talents and chutzpah to make your head spin. She is apparently linked to Blaise who may be a superhero vigilante or the spawn of the Devil. There is such a deep connection between these two as to make it complicated to tell them apart although they are quite different physically.

Deliciously interwoven between the psychic mind blasts is a precious love and loving relationship. This short story will be with me for a long time and I’m very pleased about that.

Distance of Memory

Our large woman in this tale is leader of a combat group from a ‘Central Command’ consisting of four people, two mated women and two mated men, possibly on a colonized Earth-like planet. One of the male mates has recently been killed.

All the members in the team have special powers to help fight for the health and welfare of their people from the blaggards know as Renders. That added a very special quality to this semi-mystical story. I really loved the amazing camaraderie and fascinating group bonding. This one was so different from the previous two. Captivating.

Finder’s Keepers

Cat is our large woman with a very special power. Mirsagh is a woman who always seems to have an angle. They have known each other since childhood. These two have just re-connected after fifteen years on yet another planet somewhere in our universe.

This story has some brutal and harsh scenes, but it was a thrilling escapade with some very passionate lovemaking. The two females were spectacular in their own ways and though I would have liked to smack Mirsagh left right and sideways, she and Cat were magnificent.

This is really enjoyable!

I don't usually read many stories with tentacles, although I know there are people who LOVE it and people who absolutely HATE it haha, but I actually wound up really enjoying this!

My favorites were Gryvon - A Home Among the Stars (want more!) and Peter Hansen - Deadline (Loved the main couple in this being an established couple), and I could totally read more from both of these stories. I thought they both had great world building and they were super hot and sensual. I also really enjoyed D.K. Jernigan - A Bargain, since I always love mermen stories and this was pretty close.

Really enjoyed this…guess I want to read more tentacle stories now, oh vey! :P

Oooh...want...must...have...

How did I not know this was out?

A Bargain by D.K. Jernigan - 4 stars - fantasy/fairytale, a little dark, a lot lovely.

Chained to the Wheel by Angelia Sparrow - 2 stars - Er, apparently not my thing. I'm not sure I liked either of the characters, and I'm doubtful that I am smart enough to really "get" this story. *wrinkles nose* It was still interesting though.

A Home Among the Stars by Gryvon - 4.5 stars - Aaron was sweet and Ilyan was like half snake and half tentacles, it was twice the sparkly. *starry eyes*

Deadline by Peter Hansen - 4.5 stars - Dude...*whines* I want more. I want to see how they meet and get together. I want to see what happens after this story. Gimme! *grabby hands* Er, yeah, so I liked this one. :)

Basic premise: Larger ladies kicking butt.

This anthology of short stories had 4 stories that covered 3 different genres. All stories were about larger women (hence the title) who are kick-butt heroes despite their size. This is an interesting premise to me, who isn't exactly svelte, so I was curious to see how they would turn out. They were of varying quality, so I'll break them down.

"Terror on Saturn VI" by Neal Litherland is arguably the best story in the anthology. It's a solid SF/horror story about a group of all-female roughnecks who answer a distress call on a prison/mining operation. Litherland's stories never fail to disappoint due to great descriptions, character consistency, and overall mood. It was a fantastic opener for the book. 4 stars.

"Folie à Deux" was a superhero story, but so filled with bad writing that I frequently found my suspension of disbelief screaming in pain. There were plot holes big enough to drive trucks through and a deus ex machina that caused me to nearly stop reading the book. 1 star

"Distance of Memory" was a fantasy offering that was pretty good. There was some interesting world-building done in a brief period, and it was refreshing after the previous story. The world, however, wasn't fully clear in my brain, though, and left me with questions that made it hard for me to fully appreciate the tale. 3 stars.

"Finder's Keeper" was another fantasy offering, but less magic-fueled than the previous. Less world-building seemed necessary in this one, which is good as there wasn't much there. There was plenty of backstory for the characters, though, which made their actions (mostly) understandable. There was at least one very large plot hole, but it wasn't bad overall. I liked the characters, and the plot was decent. 3 stars.

A Bargain was short and very fairy tale like story. I liked it.
Chained to the Wheel was mostly creepy and dark with unlikable set of characters. But it was very well written.
Home Among the Stars was probably my favourite of the set, it was cute and funny though I'd like to see some continuation (and explanation too while we're at it).
Deadline was also very good story and I really liked Othosh with his running commentary on human species.

Terror on Saturn VI – Neal Litherland

We’re introduced to Mercy who happens to have a bum leg. Immediately, we get to witness some technology of the world, a machine that can repair humans. And we also get introduced to Mercy’s witty tough girl attitude. We are introduced to other characters who are on this futuristic type SWAT team with Mercy .The characters had simple names that didn’t leave me confused: Cross, Voodoo, Boom Boom, for example. We get to go on a mission with this crew into a prison experiencing some…um…deathly technical difficulties. Once inside the prison we meet Roderick, who sort of explains what’s been going inside the prison that has this creepy mysterious “we’re all going to die” vibe going on. The author does a good job handling the action scenes and describing how the enemies Mercy and the gang face look and even move. This short had a very Super Troopers feel to it, but overall it was well written.

Folie a Deux – Megan Dorei

In this short we’re introduced to Blaise and Porter. Based on the definition we’re treated to, I’m easily interested in this short. I’ve mentioned this often since I started doing reviews, but I loathe dream sequences or endless nightmares in story. Based on the definition I went into this short wanting it to be like the movie Bug. This was well written, but not as interesting as the first short. I found myself skimming through this one waiting for the big twist honestly.

Distance Memory – Michael Barnette

Alright, now this short and the one written by Neal gels. The plot was sort of similar, a group heading into a location to solve the dark mystery. Unlike Neal’s book, the characters in this book had names that I didn’t even try to pronounce in my head. This short was equally as well written as Michael’s also. While the first short featured a lot of gun action, magic was used in this one. In my opinion, Michael’s characters were the most entertaining so far out of the shorts I’ve read.

Finder’s Keeper – Layla M. Wier

It didn’t take me long to like the setting of this short and the characters Cat and Mirsagh. I love crappy apartments, not living in them, but it makes the story connectable for me since my first apartment was just horrible. Anyways, Cat requests the help of Mirsagh, who has some cool abilities, to track down and find a missing boy named Azar. This short fits the mood of Michael’s and Neal’s, it was dark, and like a better version of Law and Order honestly. This short also included the most sexual tension.

Overall –

Three of these four shorts kept me entertained, but I wasn’t begging for more once I was done. I think Megan’s book wasn’t as dark as the other three, which made it the odd man…or woman out.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

I selected this anthology for the simple fact that there are not enough inter-species love stories featuring tentacles. As a young man, I read Lovecraft and the tentacles were always associated with the darkness, evil, madness, and death. Tall, Dark, and Wriggly blows all of that out of the water and gives us a clear view of the benefits of a partner with multiple appendages. Oh the possibilities.

Some sweet, and a serious amount of heat is to be had in Tall, Dark, and Wriggly and I for one will be revisiting some of these stories in the future, especially A Home Among the Stars which was my favorite story by far.

The anthology Big Damn Heroines sets out to prove that plus-sized ladies can be brave, tough, and sexy action stars. And for the most part, it succeeds. The stories run the gamut of adventure genres: a squadron of space marines takes on an alien infestation; a super-heroine goes rogue, and her best friend battles to save her soul; a trio of warrior-wizards fights to liberate a village from slavers; and a woman with psychic powers teams up with an old friend to track down a missing man. There's lots of action, romance (including some steamy sex scenes), and a few clever twists along the way. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good adventure yarn, especially if you're tired of seeing nothing but steroid-abusing dudes and willowy supermodels in your genre stories.

Chained to the Wheel by Angelia Sparrow – 2 stars: At first a little bit confusing. Then… I don’t know. Not really what I like.

A Home Among the Stars by Gryvon – 3 stars: Okay, seriously, how did this golden egg disappear? And why didn’t he notice anything?

Entertaining collection. mostly SF with a fantasy offering. Quality is uniformly good, although I am embarrassed by my own story. (Have I ever mentioned how much I hate editing in .rtf format? if it doesn't delete half the story--which it ALWAYS does--it muddles the changes until a lot of corrections get missed)
