New York Times–Bestselling Author: In El Paso, Texas, tension grows between a doctor serving the undocumented and her ex-husband, a border patrol agent . . .
Dr. Ana Maria Ross Gutierrez runs a clinic near the Texas-Mexico border, taking care of those who’ve crossed into the United States illegally. Ana was once married to Peter Ross, but his decision to join the border patrol drove her to divorce him—despite Peter’s continuing feelings for her and his conviction that he’s protecting the desperate immigrants in his own way.
Now, as hostility and hatred heat up in El Paso, Ana, Peter, and a young mother are entangled in danger and violence that threaten them all, in this emotional, suspenseful tale by the New York Times–bestselling author of ITW Thriller Award finalist Stillhouse Lake and the Revivalist and Morganville Vampires series.
I was really excited for this book just because it was written by Rachel Caine and I loved her Stillhouse Lake series I recommend it to anyone looking for a book recommendation. The description got me more excited I was interested to see the storyline and where it went. I was so disappointed. I believe this was some of her early work, just released recently. The writing style, concept, and general storyline were great and the story was distinctively Rachel’s writing voice, but that’s really where the positives stopped. There are so many typos to the point it made the story kind of hard to read. Some of the dialogue was super odd to me. She kept referring to the white people as ‘Anglo’ which was weird to me because I’ve never heard it used in that way. It seemed confused on what kind of story it wanted to be: is it a romance? Is it social commentary on immigration, poverty etc? It could have been those things together cohesively, but it felt like she was trying to figure out where the story was going as she was writing it. The male MC was portrayed as this savior type, a conflicted man just trying to do the right thing. He was even called a ‘white knight’ at one point after he had saved a bunch of people in a building explosion, and then had sex with another woman he saved in a separate incident. Literally the savior of the story. I hate doing this, I like to read every book I start to the end, but with this one I just couldn’t. It was a DNF for me at %55 or chapter 16. It’s not really a long book but I just had to move on. I think maybe the root of the issue is that Rachel Caine was really just not the right author to write this specific story. I will read other Caine stories in the future, they just won’t be this one.
I really enjoy Rachel Caine's books. Her plots are generally exciting and her characters usually invoke a connection between and myself. Maybe I'm missing something important, but who allowed that book to escape from the proofreaders and the editor? This had so many misspelled words that were difficult to figure out what the correct word might be in the sentence. Since I read quickly, having to stop repeatedly to figure out what word she was trying to place akin to falling off a horse onto my head. Then grammar, syntax and sentence structure was so out of whack that I had stop reading altogether to make notes in order to trace the plotline down. I so hope this not the writer's new normal. Other than that, great book.
I loved Rachel's Stillhouse Lake series so I thought this would be another great read. However, I found this book to be riddled with typos so severe that I often had no idea of what she intended even when reading the context around a muddled sentence. It kept throwing me off the story as I tried to decipher her words. I am a glutton for punishment though so I finished the book. It gave a fairly decent portrayal of the interagency squabbles and territorial disputes within the government. Her main characters were a little one-dimensional for my liking.
I looked it up and this was an earlier work of Rachel's under the pen name Roxanne Conrad. It says it was written between 1996-1999. It's definitely not the tight work and fast-paced multi-plotted story lines of her Stillhouse Lake series. A great read if you haven't read the series yet. I guess every author has to start somewhere and not every story can be award-winning. It wasn't a satisfying read. I think I'll stick with her later work. I know she passed away in 2020 so she won't be writing anything else.
More grammatical errors than I've ever encountered in a Rachel Caine book and it didn't help that I could find no sympathy for the main female protagonist. Or any of the other characters either, really. Considering the setting in the mid 1990s, I wonder if this was an early effort by the author that is just now being released. Only recommend reading it if you have nothing else to read or do.
The story has the potential to be good. It has good pacing. Interesting characters -- only a few likeable. The topic is interesting, but there are enough mistakes, with grammar, spelling, and punctuation, to made the reader lose the story. This story needs an editor.
I don't really remember buying this book. I truly love thrillers, but I did enjoy reading it. I found many, many errors in spelling and grammar. No wasn't too happy about that because I had to read thru it in places a couple of times to figure out the word.
Good storyline. Hard to read due to typographical, punctuation and grammar errors.
I actually enjoyed the plot line and characters of this book. However, it was filled with so many errors that at times it was difficult to know what I was supposed to be reading. I hope the proofreader does a much better job in future books by this author.
I struggled to get through this book. There are a number of errors in the text; words misspelled, etc. I found it very distracting. I suggest a review of the Kindle content to correct the errata.
The story was well written & captivating. However, there were so many typos as well as missing punctuation, that the errors were a distraction to the story.
This was a decent book but I could nor believe the spelling errors and the wrong words. I don't think anyone edited or proof read this book before publishing
Picked this up because it took place in the town I grew up in. Unfortunately, this one just didn't work for me. Not rating since I couldn't quite make it to the end.
