Has anyone ever heard of the name Tuppence? Just curious. Now I hated Leon here. I’ve known men similar to him and his character drove me batshit crazy. Like they got married and had a child because it was just something expected of them. Not because they wanted any of it. And they had no desire to change their lives over either or take any responsibility for wrongdoing. Now this is probably a parents worst fear, in having their child taken. Gabby was a new mother who found herself in that situation with a garbage husband. As she navigated the possibilities, including corruption in law enforcement, a mourning couple who wanted to replace their own lost child, and tons of suspicious people and happenings in Stirling, she fought a tumultuous battle to find her baby, all by herself. And what she found was something much worse than she could have imagined. Great intrigue and suspense from Daniel Hurst. I did want more intensity during the finale where she finds the guilty party. It just felt a little anticlimactic, especially given the circumstances. But this is still a solid thriller from an author that has rarely disappointed.

A very ‘stand out’ cover for a stand out book
This is Daniel Hurst with not just the twists we have come to love ( and expect ) but also an added twist that an author is involved in the story and as always I find it fascinating when an author writes about an author, it is a really clever inclusion to the story
The story itself is quick action, normal day turning to horrendous day affair but I felt a lot of emotion in the book as well as the quickfire action that we so enjoy
I would say this is a untypical typical story from the author and I really enjoyed it and once again loved being in the written world of this amazing writer who can literally write a book a fortnight ( or feels like it! )

I'll do my best to be succinct and not "rattle on" about this "Baby" book.

WHIPLASH ALERT:
Prolific author Daniel Hurst's "The Wife's Baby" featured more twists than Six Flags' Kingda Ka roller coaster.

This pacey child abduction tale was unputdownable, refreshingly different, and never missed a beat.

It was also a fun read.

I guessed a few of the twists but failed to guess the author's final twist.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Angela Ness, who did an outstanding job with the narration.

Daniel Hurst has written over 75 books and this is one of his better ones.

4.5 stars rounded up.

Daniel Hurst………. I never know how to rate your books because

A) I seem to be living on outlier island ✈️🏝️
B) I don’t actually hate them or even find them difficult to read
C) I finish them quickly and the twists do often shock me
D) I love the series The Doctors Wife

………. But I just always feel like apart from The Doctors Wife series all of his other books have something missing. I keep reading them after seeing all of these amazing reviews but this is it. I’ve deleted them all from my TBR list bar TDW 4 and I am going to enjoy reading other books instead 🤷🏻‍♀️

Daniel Hurst has done it again! I read this book in one sitting and it is PHENOMENAL! A baby goes missing on a family holiday and nobody seems to know anything. Who took Tuppence? Gabby will never stop looking for her daughter. Does someone know something about the kidnapping? This book is a MUST READ. Absolutely loved it!

Her baby went missing...but she wouldn't give up...

Daniel Hurst is back firing on all cylinders with this superb psychological thriller with twist after twist. Enough to give you whiplash. After his previous "The Colleagues" which I found to be a huge disappointment, I was thrilled to be racing through the pages of this one which is more the style of of the author I've come to know and love.

Gabby and Leon have been together for seven years and married for four. Happily? Not especially. In fact, not even close. Which is why Gabby decided to book a four day getaway to the historic Scottish city of Stirling for them and their six month old baby Tuppence. It was meant to be a fresh start, to rekindle that spark they had lost in the wake of feeding times, nappies and sleep routines. Intimacy was something that was so far removed after pregnancy and giving birth.

Maybe that's why Leon went looking elsewhere. He claimed it didn't mean anything. He was only looking. But he did more than that, as Gabby discovered he paid a hefty monthly subscription for the pleasure that was to be all his for the taking. Maybe she should she have walked out then. But she loved her husband which is why she gave him another chance. And that's why they now find themselves in Stirling for a mini break.

Everything appears to be going smoothly. Their holiday rental is luxurious and divine. The city is beautiful. And the castle is stunning. Even Leon seems happier. Maybe this holiday is working. Gabby finally sees some hope for her failing marriage.

And then on their final night in the beautiful city, Gabby takes Tuppence out in the pram for their nightly pre-bedtime routine walk. And everything changes. Before the end of the night, Gabby will be distraught, Leon will be blaming her and Tuppence will be gone.

What ensues is a mother's doggedness and tireless desire to find out what happened to her missing daughter. No matter how long it takes. No matter how much of a nuisance she makes of herself. And that she does rather effectively. But despite all this, Tuppence remains missing. Her whereabouts, and her disappearance, a complete mystery. But Gabby knows that the street on which her daughter went missing is key and refuses to give up...even if the police have.

On the anniversary of Tuppence's disappearance, she joins forces with a local crime writer in the hope that two heads are better than one and that together they can uncover the truth about what happened to Tuppence.

This is Daniel Hurst at his best and I devoured every page of this book in record time. And like all of his thrillers, just when you thought you had it figured out Hurst throws in yet another twist - directly after another - and such is his skilful sleight of hand in that he peppers his tale with red herrings to keep you looking in a different direction.

Can you figure out what really happened before the big reveal? I have to tell you, even I (a seasoned thriller reader who is very rarely hoodwinked) was scuppered this time. Well played, Mr Hurst.

Now I just have to find time to squeeze in all his other books...

The king of revenge plots, Daniel Hurst, returns following The Colleagues with his latest thriller, THE WIFE'S BABY. This twisty, shocking, and unexpected domestic suspense follows a wife, husband, and baby on a getaway that goes terribly wrong—ending with a sinister kidnapping that will keep you glued to the pages until the final twist when all the dirty secrets are revealed.

Gabby and Leon's marriage is on the rocks. They have been together for seven years and married for four. Since the birth of their daughter, Tuppence, things have gone downhill with all the responsibilities of a baby.

Leon is often absent, preferring nights out at the pub with the guys or at the gym. He does not help out with the baby or do his part. Their marriage is suffering as well. Gabby has recently caught Leon being naughty, subscribing to an online site, chatting with women (webcam girls), offering their services, and wasting their money.

Gabby feels insecure about his preference for those women over her. He says he will stop, but she does not trust him. She says they are over, but he begs for a last chance.

Gabby has arranged a holiday in Scotland (Stirling) to rekindle their relationship and, as a last attempt, get their family back on track. She hopes the three of them can bond even though it takes some planning with all the clothes, nappies, toys, wipes, bottles, milk, etc., and the train ride.

Leon is hot and cold. She never knows what mood he will be in. However, things go differently than planned. At times, Leon is present, but even on their holiday, he is at the pub or taking their daughter out in the stroller and gone for long periods.

She also meets a mysterious woman at the market who admires her daughter. She seems to be stalking.

On their last night, Gabby takes Tuppence out in the stroller for a walk to wind down. Leon chooses not to go along. She hears a woman crying out and walks away from the stroller for a minute to the garden behind the house to see where the cries are coming from. She cannot find anything, but when she returns to the stroller, her baby is GONE!

Gabby is frantic. What happened to her baby? She was gone in just seconds, and the neighborhood was nice. Who snatched her baby? Was it the woman who seemed to always be looking at her baby?

The authorities are called in, and time goes on with no leads or clues as to what happened to baby Tuppence.

Gabby is determined to find her daughter even though Leo has all but given up and returned to his life. She will not stop until she finds her daughter. This drives them further apart to separation, and he moves away. She is on her own with her mom. Gabby begins her investigation when it appears the authorities have given up. She travels from Edinburgh back to Stirling.

On the anniversary of her baby's disappearance, Gabby joins forces with a local crime writer in the hopes they can uncover the mystery of what happened to her daughter. She thinks Buckingham Place is the key to finding her. Someone in Stirling has a secret.

Hurst ratchets up the suspense and tension as readers try to figure out what happened to this baby girl, while a tenacious mom will stop at nothing until she finds her. Mix in Cameron, a novelist looking for a good story, a detective, and someone locking her in a basement. Who can she trust?

You will root for Gabby and Tuppence and despise Leon. Excellent character development and a wicked revenge twist!

THE WIFE'S BABY is a read-in-one-sitting, and it is unputdownable! I had my business taxes to tackle, so halfway through, I put it on audio and allowed the robotic voice to read the remainder. It was well worth it, and I managed to knock out my taxes and finish this highly entertaining tale.

Hurst's highly creative writing delivers the unexpected with many surprising twists and turns! THE WIFE'S BABY is a must-read if you enjoy solving mysteries and tracking clues. It's a wild ride—another CRACKER of a read by Hurst!

In The Wife’s Baby, a very clever novel about a novel, author Daniel Hurst returns with a vengeance to his familiar themes of betrayal and revenge.

Gabby, age 37 as the book begins, has been unhappily married to Leon after four years. They are the parents of a six month old daughter named Tuppence, their only child. In a desperate effort to salvage her marriage, Gabby arranged a four day holiday to Stirling, a Scottish city north of their home in Edinburgh. The holiday seems to be a success, but on the third day, while walking Tuppence in her pram in a very posh neighborhood, her baby was stolen while Gabby was momentarily distracted. Leon had remained behind in their holiday rental. He said he had a hangover from drinking in a pub the night before.

What follows for Gabby with her baby’s abduction is a mother’s unbearable anguish and grief. Despite a police search of all the houses in the neighborhood, they fail to find any trace of Tuppence. Gabby suspects a number of the neighbors but she wildly and erroneously accuses enough of them that they obtain a restraining order against her. Meanwhile her marriage to Leon disintegrates, and blaming her for losing their baby, he divorces her.

An agonizing year passes and her baby’s disappearance is still unsolved. But then by what seems pure serendipitous happenstance, Gabby meets a struggling writer of mystery books named Cameron and he helps to provide her with some methodology, structure and logic to continue her search for Tuppence. Eventually Cameron produces an immensely popular best seller about a mother whose child is also abducted. His book’s similarities to Gabby’s case are startling, but Cameron writes fiction sometimes inspired by reality, right?

Fans of Daniel Hurst may guess the who behind the first twist but not the how, and they won’t guess anything about the stunning second twist. But even though Gabby herself is a fictional character, if you ever happen to meet her in reality be careful not to cross her. And by no means dare to put Tuppence in danger again.

Wow, did not in a million years did I see that ending coming. A simple story of an abduction and a frantic mother looking for her child. She never gives up and despite the police wanting her to stop, she continues her search.

But there was many twists and turns in this story and the ending will blow your mind. A different scene and an amazing ending to this great story. I love Daniel Hurst books....

The first book of 2026 and it was definitely a good one. But then that’s what I would expect from Daniel Hurst. I enjoyed the story all the way through.

I have to question two things about this book though.

Firstly, the name Tuppence. Why was the baby named after an old British currency? I know the author has written many books but did he seriously run out of names already?

Secondly, since when is a 15 minute nap part of a bedtime routine? I think all parents are close to tears when I child happens to sleep for even 5 minutes in the late afternoon so I cannot imagine what a 15 minute nap just before a nightly bath will do. I thought for sure this was before Daniel Hurst became a father but apparently not. Has he never participated in his daughter’s bed time routine? Surely someone at the publishing company has at least one child and could have told him this is not a good idea. The story was pretty farfetched so I have no idea why this was the part I found unbelievable.

Overall I enjoyed it and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Woof-a. A long drawn out story about a missing child. With no true suspense or mystery, just a mother that never gave up and was looking for revenge. The last 1/4 of the book was really rushed and dumped everything on the reader. For me two stars is being generous.

What a thrill ride this story is. A couple and their 6-month-old baby go away on a short vacation to try to recapture the romance in their relationship. The tension builds slowly to an amazing climax. But in between there is so much fear and anxiety as their baby is taken from her pram and the devastated mother will not give up the search for her child. Along the way she encounters a man who offers friendship, compassion and help. But who is he really? He's a crime writer who has written a bestseller after a dry spell which is actually based on the missing baby. His book leads her to find the truth and all the twists are mind-blowing. Cover to cover this book is a story that packs a punch and is an edge of your seat thriller. Daniel Hurst has done it again and I highly recommend this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Daniel Hurst is a fantastic author, his books are compelling, thrilling and draw you in with every page turn.

The storyline was great… it was different! Imagine being away on holiday with your husband and six month old daughter, going for a casual walk and boom your daughter is taken! You have no idea who would have done such a terrible thing, you do not know anyone around this area… you feel alone… devastated… heartbroken… I could not even imagine how this would feel!

Daniel really did his research on Stirling, which most authors do not do any research most of the time and just make it up as they go along, however, the ending on what happened just sounded sooo unrealistic… I would recommend this thriller for an easy thrilling read, but this is not his best book some of his work is outstanding!

Woah, a surprise revenge story! Wow. That ending really had me. How insane.
This is a newer author to me, and I didn’t plan and binging this story but it happened and I’m pretty pleased about it! I’m on the fence about 4 or 5 stars so I’m going to go with a 4.5!
I was unhappy about the police in this story… I feel like more should have been done but fiction! So I’m good!

Rating as a movie: R for adult content and situations

Books and Authors mentioned: The Doctor’s Wife, The Doctor’s Widow, The Doctor’s Mistress, The Doctor’s Child, The Couple’s Revenge, My Daughter’s Boyfriend, The Couple’s Revenge, Til Death Do Us Part, The Passenger, The Neighbours, The Tutor, He Was A Liar, Run Away With Me, The Role Model, The Broken Vows, We Used To Live Here, The 20 Minutes Series

Memorable Quotes: ‘I’d prefer it if you stayed back and helped me,’ I reply. ‘Tuppence would too. You know she loves it when we both bath her.’ ‘She’s six months old. She doesn’t know who’s bathing her. She doesn’t know anything yet.’ ‘Yes, she does. She recognises our faces. You know she does. She smiles when she sees us.’ ‘Fine,’ Leon says under his breath, and I’ve obviously got him to agree but begrudgingly.

If it’s going to be hard for me, I’ll make sure it’s doubly so for my silly partner.

I sensed danger immediately and should have said no. But I was past the point of caring. So I said yes. That’s when part two of Tuppence’s disappearance began.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️½🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧🍼👶🏻👩‍🍼

My thoughts: 🔖Page 10 of 264 [3 pages into Chapter] 1 - Nope! Too slow for my current mood, the frantic Prologue wasn't doing it for me, and Chapter 1 wasn't helping. I'll have to come back another day.
🔖134 [Chapter] 22 - This writing isn't the best, the MC is annoying, and I'm torn between quitting and finding out what happened.

This story has a lot of ramblings from the MC, but what turned me off was the amount of stupidity required to get through the climax. This author has been hit-and-miss for me and this one was very predictable. I knew who did it from the beginning but of course he through us off that trail only to loop back around to it, so typical. That combined with the stupidity of the characters is enough to put this author on probation for a while. I'd been hoping to read several of his books this year. I don't know if only the US version contained American vocabulary or if that's how the book was originally written but I do not like it when books set in the UK written by UK authors have characters using American vocabulary because it makes me feel like they are probably just changing the words because they think we can't figure it out, holiday and kilometers are pretty common knowledge exchanges you don't have to say vacation and miles. Especially when you use A&E, which the average American doesn't know is the ER, but I'm sure they can Google. This isn't a children's book, you don't have to change the vocabulary it makes them sound inauthentic. The bonus at the end was enough to save this for me, it was okay.

Recommend to others: Sure if you are a Modglin or McFadden fan you may love Hurst, his books are quick and you won't know if you love them until the end and you and your friends likely won't have the same opinion of them. You never know with him.

I loved this book and found too addicting to put down. It was entertaining, thrilling and full of suspense. I wish I could give this one 5 stars because I really did enjoy it, but there were some aspects of the book that I found a bit predictable.

That was the only part I managed to predict though, but it was still a major part of the plot twist which is why I can only give 4 stars. Regardless of that, I found my heart racing at certain moments in this book, and it was even a bit emotional at times. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the way it was able to stir up genuine emotions within me. Daniel Hurst, you have done it again. I absolutely recommend reading this book!

Review for audio:

I was debating how to rate this. The book grabbed me right away. A woman, Gabby Hartley s baby, Tuppance ( couldn't get passed that name for a baby. Only heard once in an Agatha Christie book) is kidnapped and she is doing whatever she can to get her baby back while her marriage with her husband Leon is crumbling. Good so far. It had me thinking one certain thing to who the culprit was but it wasn't.

My small issues. Early on I thought Gabby a bit dim. She tells Leon it was an accident the baby was taken. No it wasn't. It was her fault!! Also narration was a bit difficult to pick up certain words with the dialect of the narration.

Gabby definitely redeems herself with the ultimate revenge!

5 stars ⭐️

My third Daniel Hurst book, and third 5 star ⭐️ Daniel Hurst book!!!

This was my favourite so far. SO twisty, a really great take on a classic “whodunnit” plot.

REALLY didn’t see any of it coming either! I don’t know how Daniel manages to pack so much into less than 300 pages! Really well written, incredible characters and kept me turning pages at incredible pace. I really couldnt put it down.

I found myself enjoying the build up to the books climax too. Usually that’s a dull point in a book but I loved learning about the characters, and just enjoying the atmospheric descriptions of Scotlands terrible weather 😂 (which sounds crazy, but I love a well set scene!)

Overall: extremely twisty, so well written, and I enjoyed every page. Highly recommend.

Another excellent book from this author, I don't know how he does it but never disappoints me. It was a fast paced thriller read that kept me on the edge of my seat from the very first page.

There were plenty of twists and turns and my mind kept changing who the culprit actually was but everything was brought to a satisfactory conclusion and I can thoroughly recommend this book.
