The Wishmaker - R. P. Sofianiuc

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I ask for a wish… a wish for more of this universe. I am still processing the way it ended and what I read. “The wishmaker” can be read 2 ways, first you can discover the story along with the FMC, second you can dive into the MMC diary and see an interesting backstory 🤭

I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but the cover made me wanna read it and I don’t regret it even a bit. Ophelia is a princess bound to the shadows of her castle and her father’s… who does everything in his power to not let her claim the throne. But things change when she meets a wishmaker, a different one, Alistair.

Their interactions were chefs kiss, I loved every bit of it, I loved how their characters were written and how everything developed. The plot twists… didn’t even cross my mind.

If you love fantasy and enjoy different realms, if you want a story that has a little bit of action, danger, love, magic and a prophecy, plot twists… I think this one is for you. Alistair is easy to like, Ophelia - you will want to be able to help her somehow. And the twists and how it ends - you won’t be able to not think about it.

R.P. Sofianiuc’s captivating debut novel “The Wishmaker”introduces a world where desires materialize in unexpected ways. Intertwining elements of fantasy, romance, and suspense, “The Wishmaker” centers on Princess Ophelia, an albino royal whose condition confines her to a life shrouded in darkness. Her only companion is her devoted maid until the enigmatic wishmaker, Alistair, comes into her otherwise secluded life.

Alistair’s arrival brings a newfound sense of hope and illumination to Ophelia’s lonely world, but beneath his charming exterior lies a labyrinth of secrets. As they emerge, Ophelia faces the daunting choice of placing her trust in Alistair or risking both her claim to the throne and her life.

Sofianiuc’s storytelling prowess is most evident in her vivid and evocative prose. The rich descriptions paint a world that is both enchanting and haunting, immersing readers in a setting that feels all too real. The castle’s shadowy corridors, the ethereal glow of moonlit nights, and the palpable tension between characters are all rendered with meticulous detail, drawing readers deeper into the narrative.

The character development in “The Wishmaker” is also particularly noteworthy. Princess Ophelia emerges as a particularly layered protagonist, grappling with her physical limitations while exhibiting resilience and a yearning for connection. Her evolution from a sheltered, isolated figure to one who confronts her fears and challenges societal expectations is both compelling and inspiring. It is worth noting that this book can be read in one of two ways, either from Ophelia’s perspective or Alistair’s. I chose to read it from Ophelia’s point of view, as was recommended by the author.

Alistair is equally intriguing. Bound by his own set of rules (unable to lie yet harboring many secrets), he presents a complex figure whose motives remain tantalizingly ambiguous. Their interactions are charged with curiosity and a simmering undercurrent of attraction, making their relationship a beautifully woven focal point of the narrative.

Sofianiuc also balances moments of reflection with sequences of heightened suspense. The gradual unveiling of Alistair’s secrets keeps readers on edge, while the political intrigues and looming threats to Ophelia’s life add layers of complexity to the story. Additionally, the thematic depth of “The Wishmaker” elevates the story further. The exploration of trust is a recurring motif as Ophelia’s journey is not just about discovering external truths but also about confronting her own insecurities and biases. The narrative explores the very concept of wishes and desires, prompting the reader to reflect on the consequences of getting what one wishes for and the inherent responsibilities that come with power.

“The Wishmaker” is a mesmerizing tale that will appeal to readers who appreciate richly crafted narratives filled with mystery, romance, and introspection. Fans of character-driven stories set in fantastical realms will find themselves captivated by Ophelia’s journey and the enigmatic Alistair. Those who enjoy unraveling secrets and the complexities of human desires and relationships will also find plenty to savor. Sofianiuc has offered up a story that lingers in the mind, prompting reflections on the shadows we all carry and the transformative power of trust.

I absolutely adored Ophelia—she’s such a relatable character. Strong yet vulnerable, and you can feel her struggle with every decision she makes. I was so invested in her journey. Then there’s Alistor... *wow.* He’s not just hot, but there's something magnetic about him. Mysterious, intense, and everything nice.

And that plot twist? I was NOT ready. I read it the author’s way and OMG! Did not expect that…

This book is a rollercoaster of emotions and kept me hooked from start to finish. Definitely a must-read for anyone who loves a good twist and amazing characters.

I DNF’d this book. The writing style just isn’t for me. The story seems interesting, but I really struggled to connect with either character. The whole thing felt cold and detached which I think the author was intending given the back story of the characters. I stopped reading at Chapter 11 (27% finished).
