REVIEW: A STRANGE THERE AFTER is the second instalment in Missy Fleming’s contemporary, young adult Savannah Shadows paranormal storyline focusing on a centuries old curse that has followed Quinn Roberts family through the generations. As the sole surviving Roberts family member, Quinn has become the target of ghosts and spirits avenging their death at the hands of Quinn’s ancestors. Now that Quinn’s spirit has been forced from her own body, she must find a way to let everyone know that the spirit inhabiting her body is not Quinn but someone who hopes to make the switch permanent.
Missy Fleming continues the world building from book one where Quinn’s life read like a Cinderella fairy tale including the wicked step-mother and step-sisters but in A STRANGE THERE AFTER the fairy tale takes on a more sinister note. With her extended family out of the picture, Quinn will discover that not everything they did was under their control. With the Savannah, Georgia area notorious for hauntings and magical incantations Quinn, along with the help of her best friend and a young psychic with connections to the other side, Quinn sets out to find a way to reverse the curse set upon her family for hundreds of years.
A STRANGE THERE AFTER is a young adult storyline (written in first person POV) with all the hallmarks of the genre-a love triangle; absent parents; misguided and misunderstood youth; villainous adults; and the requisite mean girl who pushes Quinn from her body and takes over her life as well as her boyfriend. Quinn’s friends try desperately to find a way to reverse the curse but Quinn takes it upon herself to make a deal with an otherworldly spirit only the Devil himself would love.
The storyline is well paced; there is mystery and suspense; perceived betrayal and broken hearts. The secondary characters are colorful but Quinn’s long suffering boyfriend plays only a small role in the second storyline. The reader is pulled into a story where voodoo, magic and revenge have crossed hundreds of years to finally come full circle with the last of the cursed family. Once Quinn is out of the picture, what’s an angry spirit to do for fun?
When I finished reading the first in the Savannah Shadows series, "Happily Never After" I couldn't imagine where the author could possibly take this. Our heroine Quinn was in such an impossible situation I couldn't see a way for her to get out of it.
Upon reading an unedited ARC of the sequel my praise for Ms. Fleming is doubled if not tripled. The book picks up basically right where the first one left off and we are thrown all over the place.
Quinn must face new evils and make unthinkable decisions.
Catherine is still in the picture, except now we learn more about who she was and what she has been through. Suddenly she's not just an evil spirit, suddenly she's a girl who has been through so much.
New characters are thrown into the mix, a ghost hunter who could very well steal Quinn's heart from Jason, the movie star boyfriend we met in book 1.
I was so excited to learn more about Jackson and little George, two of the ghosts who have haunted Quinn's house for hundreds of years.
Given how book 1 ended, I was very curious how Quinn was going to get herself out of the pickle she found herself in. With her physical body possessed by a malicious spirit and no one around who could hear or see Quinn, getting back to herself looked hopeless.
As it turns out, there's more to Quinn's house than just a few random ghosts and Quinn is resourceful enough to make herself heard.
On the downside, Quinn makes a deal that could turn out very badly for her in the future. But she also finds a hot guy who can see and hear ghosts just like she can. Hot guys always liven up the place. Especially when you accidentally walk in on them showering.
Naked, wet men aside, we get a insight into why Catherine did the things she did and learn a little more about the ghosts Quinn has grown up with. There's still a whole lot left to explore in this world (showering men optional) and a few more mysteries to unravel.
Should I mention the naked guy again? I liked him. He grew on me. Not like a fungus, either. *slow thumbs up*
Amazing!! I didn't think this story could possibly be any better then the first but I was wrong! Quinn's life, or afterlife, is completely a mess. She is stuck, unable to communicate with her friends. Fortunately Boone enters her life. I really like Boone. He has a personality that made me like him right away.
The author does a wonderful job with character development. Watching the changes in them feels so real. She has a way of making you feel for each character. At a few points in the story I actually felt sorry for Catherine. Strange, but true!
I could feel Quinn's pain and anxiety. Her fear and her relentless determination to get back to where she belongs.
I learned a lot about Jackson, I was surprised when he described how he died!!
Always the BFF Abby stands by Quinn even if she can't see her. She is there to help and do whatever she can.
I was amazed at Quinn's decision in the end and I know this will only lead to more tragedy and heartache.
I can't wait for this story to continue. This author is amazing and has a unique imagination. She draws you in and keeps you invested in the story. I can't wait for the next book. This one was amazing!!
I received this book in return for an honest review. I read the first of this series titled Happily Never After and really enjoyed it. But, it always seems that as an author adds more books series to their series, they can never live up to the first book. Missy Fleming does not fit into that category. A Strange There After picks up right where the last left off and instantly pulls you in. I felt that this story, that involves a ghost taking over the main characters body, would have normally been hard to follow. But, Missy just has a way with descriptive writing that allows you to picture the story easily. I felt that the characters were easy to relate to, and the conversations they had were realistic for today's kids. I'm hoping to read some of her other books after finishing these two.
I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review. I'm really glad I got a chance to read and review this novel. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first book, but I did still really like it. I liked that we got the backstories from the secondary characters. That really helped me connect with them and to understand why there were doing what they were doing. I'm looking forward to see what Missy Fleming will think of next.
