I feel terrible giving this book only one star, as it was certainly full of spirit and the will to tell a good story. Unfortunately, there were several things which made it exceptionally difficult to read, and sadly I gave up about a quarter through the book.

The story is the second in a series (yet I had no trouble following the plot, so I figure this book could stand alone; the only caveat is that I skipped to the end I saw that the story ends in a cliffhanger, meaning if you want it resolved you have to get the third book). We follow the lives of several characters, including Morgan and her son, who are on the run; Joslin, her children, and her pals Farrow, Jarred, and Aiden (love interest); and the "bad guys" out to get Morgan, named Samuel, Patterson, Crutch, and Kevin. Their fates all intertwine (and tangle!), creating a surprising turn of events for seemingly separate parties.

My issues with this book come from its straightforward yet unrealistic dialogue, trite cat-and-mouse scenes, and two-dimensional character development. Ultimately, I felt like the story was "told" to me and not "shown"--I had difficultly imagining the scene, the characters, the time and place, etc. The tones of the characters did not feel separate from each other, as though it was the same voice for each person. This is problematic, as the children's wordage felt too elevated and unrealistic for their ages, while the adults felt diminutive and immature. I also had difficulty with the reality of the plot, as there are so many more options than just "going along" with evil and unlawful acts, options which none of the characters seem to consider.

I wanted so badly to like this book, believe the characters, and be swept along in the plot, though sadly none of those things happened. I believe it has all the ingredients of a really good story, it just needs to be fleshed out and grounded a bit. Perhaps the book would be better suited to a younger audience (middle or high school) than adult, particularly for those just getting into the mystery/thriller genre. I think the author has incredible potential, but it wasn't there for me in this book.

"Tangled Ribbons", by Michelle Moschetti, offers the reader an exciting and emotional plot that keeps the reader wanting to read more! Very rarely do I read books that I have trouble putting down...but this novel kept me wanting to find out what would happen next! Not only did I enjoy the plot and feel genuine emotion for the characters, but I especially enjoyed the change of situations occurring within specific chapters that peeked my interest and motivation to finish the entire novel in one day!

I couldn't put it down! The story plot became more intense with this book and I could not wait to find out what was going to happen next! I found the plot to be continuously interesting by the way the author ties in all the characters and the twists that keep the plot going. I found myself trying to guess ahead at where the author was leading me and figure out how this was going to end. If you enjoyed the first book, then this one is a must. If you haven't read the first one, then I would recommend giving it a try.
