He believes love is a distraction. She says love has failed her. Will they risk their own hearts to prove each other wrong?

Darrell Washington saw more than his fair share of chaos early on in life. The second youngest of five siblings, he carried his own load at a young age while witnessing his young mother chase after a new man each month. Darrell learned from his mother that love itself, is no more than a distraction from the more important things in life.

Moriah Jackson chose to grow up at a young age after being abandoned by her mother with her older sister, left alone with her now single father who could only offer his best. Trying to be mature for the sake of lightening the weight for her father, Moriah has no choice but to believe that the love her mother had for her, simply wasn’t enough to make her stay.

When Darrell and Moriah meet through a business venture, it’s clear that you cannot avoid what destiny has in store for you. The question is, will they risk their own hearts in the name of love? Or, will their fears prove them right after all?

first off thanks for the ARC!

this was a solid debut. it was cute n easy to read.

i would say the tropes were a bit off, this was not a slow burn or forced proximity n i wouldn’t even say “he fell first” because the attraction was very much mutual.

this was fast-paced and dialogue heavy, and even though both background of the characters were explained it didn’t feel like i was reading two different characters because both of their stories were pretty much identical. with that being said this book in my opinion especially with the same backstory of the MC’s if this book was a second chance romance. even how they met, their first date and moriahs and honey’s relationship it gave familiarity.

i did really enjoy this book and plan to read the rest of the series. also very excited abt rayana’s book because she was my favourite.

so sweet!

I loved this story. The characters are relatable, and the family systems kept a smile on my face. The MC’s were both so stubborn and ran from love, but when they got it together, it was so sweet. I shed a few tears towards the end, so I am suing E.L. for emotional distress! Amazing job!

3.5 stars! I think this set a good tone for a debut novel. I really enjoyed the characters stories & the characters as individuals but there was a lot I feel like could be better which is why I rounded down.

• This book needs content warning. There are some heavy stuff & death occurring on page

• why are all of a sudden Darrell & Moriah constantly running into each other if they’ve both lived in this area all this time? I hate when authors use this as a plot device

• I’m not a fan of the instalove trope & even though the author called this insta infatuation it felt close enough

• I feel like we didn’t get to see the characters fall in love. Like yes I believed they were in love by the end but they went on a few dates & had sex once? It felt like a big jump.

• Once the MCs started dating we never saw them at work again lmao. And there should have been the conversation about work & dating a partner between Darell & Moriah.

• I’m not mad at the third act breakup (I rarely mind those) but I will say I don’t like the way the hospital incident was just kind of moved past… it seemed odd to me

• I’m assuming we’ll see Darell and Anthony talk their problems out in Anthony’s book so I actually wasn’t too mad about that, but for a whole year to pass and the relationship with Anthony & Moriah still being strained is a little weird to me

There were a few typos & the formatting for the ebook needed some work but this was an indie publishing so I extend grace for that.

ARC mini book review
3.75 ★/5

what to expect
⊹ forced proximity
⊹ he falls first
⊹ everyone sees it but them
⊹ work partners/colleagues

first off, I am absolutely so grateful for receiving this opportunity to reading el’s debut novel & I cannot wait for the rest of the world to read darrell & moriah. ❤️

gosh how captivated I was with darrell & moriahs story. they’re characters individually had me absolutely hooked & obsessed. moriah? this girl was fiesty but loving & how much of a boss babe she was?? immediately always fall for a girly like her. & her work ethics & where her career revolves around? just admire her in so many ways. & darrell, this man had me on my toes. at first, he made me so anxious, but in a good way. how shy & nervous he was within moriah’s vicinity? he just had a great amount of swoon worthy moments. & he’s a grandma/family man?? different but LOVED.

“sight unseen” was a fun read. it’s definitely one of those books that took me a while to fully get into but the remaining of the book was absolutely worth the slow burn. HOWEVER, the plots?? no words, just tears. in all, I mainly enjoyed the family dynamics in this universe. It was by far one of my favorite moments throughout this book.

3.75 ⭐️ | arc review
"all i ask is that you try loving me… because i can’t stop loving you now that i’ve started.”
first i wanna say thank you for the arc, my love, i truly did have a good time with this one

sight unseen follows darrell washington and moriah jackson as they learn to love one another as well as learn to receive love from one another.

darrell washington, where do i start? he is literally my man in real life turned fiction. as an earth sign, and a capricorn like darrell, i could relate to him a little more. and when i say he is literally MY man, i mean that. like my irl man is quite literally just like darrell inside and out, like miss girl, who you knowwwwwww??? lol but even the little things darrell said or did reminded me of my man, who’s name also happens to start with a D lmaoo.

i loved moriah so much, too, and maybe it’s because i also adore aries women, but i loved her and her energy so much. one thing i did hate was how much she tried to deny her attraction to darrell and how she tried to undermine his attraction for her, but nonetheless, i loved how she progressed as a character throughout the story.

though this is a slow burn, it didn’t feel like one to me. the love and support from both of their loved ones had my entire heart.

I feel as though this is a great debut novel for an indie author! I appreciated the slow burn, and love a good duel perspective story. It was a comfortable and enjoyable read. Honey’s last speech to her grandchildren legitimately made me shed a tear.

I knew this was the beginning of a series, so towards the end of the novel I was questioning how the series would continue when it felt like the story between Darrell and Mo had ended organically. When I read the authors note and realized the next book will be about Anthony and Anastasia’s relationship, I understood. I find it very creative; almost like a Sight Unseen multiverse, lol. The foreshadowing of their budding relationship in the last chapter to set the story for book #2 was a nice touch.

Overall, this is a great novel for a new author, and I am excited to see E.L. Calloway’s writing blossom and grow as she continues to publish future novels.

slow burn

Whew 😅 this isn't the longest book that I have read but it definitely dragged on. I would for sure categorize this as a slow burn to the point everyone in the books knows these two like each other except the damn main characters. When the MMC finally got it together then we have the FMC backtracking like people get it together. I loved the matriarch family foundation and setting just how important that is. I also love highlighting and dealing with the trauma of abandonment and showing that abandonment comes in different forms but the pain still hurts.

I'm unsure if I'll read the next couple just because the pace of everything was entirely too slow for me.

Overall though the story and character were worth the read

Beautiful and captivating read! Fell in love with the characters, slow burning plot that locks you in & very well-written. Can’t wait until the next book in the series!

DNF. I got two chapters in and realized I wasn’t going to enjoy this book. I think the story could be good but this book should have went through another round of editing before release.

It was such an amazing feeling to be able to read Darrell and Moriah's love story just as much as it was to watch E.L Calloway's journey of writing it. This novel was such a good read to start off the Tribune Heights series—from the characters, settings, plot, and even the atmosphere. I adored Moriah as a character so much; she has officially been added on my list of favorite books FMC! Truly can't wait to read more from the series.
