If you always carry a hammer with you, sooner or later everything begins to look like a nail...

This book is jam packed with tragedies, misunderstandings, innuendos, abuses, and some pretty sketchy characters. It's also filled with love and families, those chosen and those forged by blood.

Jason Moore has returned to town with his almost twelve-year-old son, Tyler. He's taking charge of the Search & Rescue for the Sheriff's Department. His foster brother Cooper works for the Grady Springs PD and has recently discovered that the investigation into David's death was botched. Incompetence or more corruption?

He didn't have an easy childhood and was placed in foster care. He and his foster brothers, Cooper and Scott, had been taken in by Charlotte and David Deckard, whom they called Maman and David. David had always been the boys biggest supporter. The Deckards wanted to adopt them, but David was killed in a hit and run accident that has never been solved. A crooked judge, with a bias against single foster parents, refused to let Maman, a now single woman, keep the boys.

When Jason's high school girlfriend was killed, the police arrested him but failed to follow the legalities of the law in dealing with minors. He was released, and a lawsuit was filed on his behalf. He joined the Navy and became a rescue swimmer.

He's always been drawn to dark-eyed, dark-haired, taller women who need saving from something or someone.

Against the advice of others, he married Christine. The marriage didn't last after she cheated on him, but at least he got his son from the disaster of the marriage.

Aubrey Page has captured Jason's attention, although she's nothing like the type of woman he's normally drawn to. She's a petite blue-eyed, blonde Nordic goddess. Her entire life, she's been judged on her looks. People only see a pretty face. They don't realize how sharp of a business owner she is. She owns a salon where she's a stylist, along with a barbershop, and is the silent majority owner of the spa at the Clear Creek Inn. She creates safe havens for abused women. She's accustomed to solving her own problems.

Her husband, Spencer, was a veteran who not only had PTSD but also problems with his family and the family landscaping business. He lost his battle with his mental health issues, leaving behind Aubrey and their daughters, Sydney and Shelby. His family spread rumors that she caused his death, and they even sued her. After Sydney was drugged at a party and became pregnant, they sued for custody of the teenage girls but lost.

Sydney had twins, Harley and Quincy, who are now two years old. As if the family hasn't had enough tragedy, Shelby's boyfriend, who'd been her best friend since they were four, sacrificed his life when a car veered towards her. Many of her classmates and townspeople blamed his death on her. Living in the house that had so many memories of Will connected to it was just too hard on Shelby. So Aubrey moved with her into a condo, leaving Sydney and the twins at the family home.

Now things are occurring that make Jason believe that Aubrey is another cheating woman. By the time he realizes how wrong he is, it may be too late.

4.5 stars.

I told myself that I was just going to read for a bit then go to bed, the next thing I knew it was way way past my bedtime, this story sucked me in and still had a hold of me when it finished, I wanted to continue reading about them.

I felt a connection to Jason and Aubrey and believed in their connection and chemistry too. I really loved seeing them come together, how well they slotted into each others lives and the way they cared for each other. I liked the mystery in this, learning about what they did, seeing them being open with each other yet still holding parts of themselves back, and how they tried to balance their lives. The support they got from their family and friends was good and I especially liked how they were both able to self evaluate and were able to recognise right, wrong and what they needed to change.

This book took me on an emotional journey, flawlessly blending romance, heartache, and suspense. Jason and Aubrey’s story is raw and deeply moving, with a slow-burning connection that feels real and beautifully earned. The emotional highs and lows had me completely captivated, and I found myself cheering them on through every challenge. The way this book explores resilience, love, and the complexities of blending families is both heartfelt and powerful. The tension kept me on edge, the emotions ran deep, and by the end, I was left breathless. This is the kind of story that lingers long after you turn the final page.

This book is more than just a romance—it’s a powerful story about resilience, love, and the challenges of blending families. Jason and Aubrey’s relationship felt so genuine, with a slow-building connection that made every moment between them feel earned and meaningful. The emotional depth is stunning, and the suspense adds just the right amount of tension to keep you fully immersed in the story. It’s beautifully written, emotionally rich, and impossible to put down. One of my favorite reads this year!

This book was a great combination of suspense and romance. The romance between Jason and Aubrey was well developed and I liked that it was a later in life romance. It brought to the forefront the difficulty when parents with children try to date and how blending families takes time and patience. David is such a sweet guy and makes a great book boyfriend!
