So a guy gets sucked into a magic world using dark powers he has been practicing all his life, more or less. So he's a bit creepy, but okay. At least he's trying to help people. Sort of. As long as they go along with him.

There's a lot of power fantasy at play here, with a bit of a juvenile frame, but at least some attempt at being clever by inverting the moral axis. Our main character getting explicitly "evil" class powers while some of the chumps that are pulled in with him get explicitly "good" class powers is a conflict that might not suck. And our main character is at least trying to help folks. And then the main chump with "good" powers actually kills a helpless person pleading for help while cowarding his way to a treasure he's going to steal that just happens to have the perfect item to make him have even a small chance to continue his entitled whining. And that was my last straw.

Sure, play with the moral axis. I'm interested to see where you end up with a mostly good person using power coded bad to do good. But we get a couple of PoV sections in the weasel's perspective and giving that guy unearned wins was like thrusting sticks in my spokes. He's a prejudiced, entitled jerk who has authored all the bad things that have happened and he gets the free wins that guarantee that his whiny thrashings will haunt this story for way longer than I'm prepared to tolerate.

So one star and just yuck. I'm okay with a kind of simplistic take on morality and power fantasy if you at least make it interesting. Entitled whiners who win by author fiat will lose all that leeway right quick, though. At least for me.

Honestly, this was quite the slog to read and I will be dropping the series. There was a significant mismatch between expectations for what this book was supposed to be and what it actually was. Based on the description of the book, I expected FloridaMan's version of Superman. Something along the lines of superman that does insanely silly dumb stuff in a fantasy world. What I got instead was a mostly reasonable superman that pursued the power of friendship and just generally being an asshole.

The good/evil concept throughout the book felt a bit forced and we were hit with essentially the same rendition of "Evil can be good"/"Good can be evil" spiel so many times that it just stopped being interesting.

Regarding the story. It's largely aimless with a few minor side quests. When they are all tied-together we loosely have a plot that involves... *waves hand vaguely*... getting stronger to save foodie. Honestly, it feels like the author was tying to write a slice of life book but none of the actual plot devices or characters wanted slice of life things. 🤷‍♂️

Regarding the characters: Everyone (including the MC) is a paper cutout with no real sense of agency, individuality, or self-motivation outside of just being present in the story at the moment. The MC is constantly worshiped by his gaggle of "yes-men" supporters while simultaneously doing nearly nothing to actually deserve said worship (is keeping someone alive really all you need to have the undying loyalty of everybody around you)?

All in all, the book had a few moments that made me chuckle and there is probably a target audience that will enjoy these books. I'm just not included in that list.

This book is like reading a video game (which I imagine is the point of the genre). I liked the writing and descriptions, the sentence pacing. I am greatly amazed by the unending adventure and action the author created, interspersed with little slice of life, and characters interactions, as well as a lot of “gameplay”, where the characters think out their moves. There were some important themes lightly touched upon, and other more deeply explored. I liked the evil-good aligned vs. actual morality and kindness theme.

I read this to try out the LitRPG genre. Unfortunately, it’s really not for me, I’m not a big video game/D&D person, and reading this required too much active focus. Also I have a hard time imagining fighting scenes, so this genre requires too much work from me, which is hard in a book this long.

If you like anime-style, video games, D&D,
If LitRPG, fast-pace, lots of non-stop action, is your thing, try it out.

I know I said I wouldn't read anything of the author's other series that I read, but I can't remember if that extended to anything he wrote.

His writing was very childish, while dealing with mature themes.
My hope here is that since Florida Men are some really out-there events you have no right telling children about, the writing wouldn't try to be unfunny YA trash.

I guess this couldn't be a "Florida Man" book without things seeming like a fever dream. I'm a quarter way through this book, and how things are going so far in the protag's favour, has me thinking that he is sharing some dream. Either that, or this "honoured outsider" gives someone cheat codes.

It seems the author loves hoodies. This is the second book in a different series I read from the author, and both have the protag hiding under a hoodie / cloak with their face hidden in darkness.

I'm more than a quarter way through this book. When the blurb said "Florida man" gets isekai'd, I really expected the protag to be doing Florida Man stuff. Injecting that corrupting black fluid into his veins, snorting ground up goblin bones, having sex with the monster Koi fish, etc. You know, regular Florida Man stuff you read on the news.

This is an improvement from the other book I read from the author. This actually makes me laugh. Especially a parasite coat that speaks Spanish.

Even though this was huge, I might pick up the sequel. This was surprisingly tame. I expected the protag to be sleeping with everyone, including that Goblin.

I may or may not pick up the sequel, depend on how I feel to go through this again.

That ending was kind of expected.

Very Overpowered

I like overpowered main characters. I really like progressive books. I really wanted to enjoy this series. I was able to enjoy some of the accomplishments achieved as the weak main characters grows into a powerful character. But it needs to have finesse and something relatable. The main characters has lots of flaws. Most of them in the head. From this I mean, the main characters is broken mentally. In his own little universe but attempting to become good and whole again. The author’s world building constraints and choices in direction do not allow me to enjoy being in the shoes of the main character. The book dragged on for me as the reader is lead down distraction after distraction as he lends his powers to level up his group. Then adds in the stupid DnD alignment (good/neutral/evil) with consequences. While some parts are good, I can do without this addition. I think the author was exploring the idea of what power really is and what it means to him. A very lame reverse time and all is back as it was is the “surprise” ending to the first book so the author can have sequels. Do I really care if the MC can overcome his new overwhelming darkness power? His grand papa can simply rewind everything. So no real tension there. Nothing sticks. I guess that is what is in store for the remaining books which I will be skipping.

Firstly, the idea behind the book is amazing. Overpowered wizard, what could go wrong?

Lots.

The editor didn't exist, or was so bad, that a grammar check in word could have fixed up a lot of the issues. I lost count of the amount of times a word was used twice in consecutive sentences, improper verb tenses; mixing up damage types, achievement levels etc. The sentence structure itself was questionable; almost seeming like the author tried to fatten up his writing by adding suggested adjectives/adverbs to "flesh out" or seem more "polished".

The only thing that happened was that their prose ended up sounding amateurish at best. These are just the structural problems, or the "framing" of the literary structure. I haven't even begun to gripe about the plot pacing or lack of detail for many of the events. I won't go into any detail regarding the content as that's treading into spoiler territory. What I will say is it was ALSO the content that had me continuing to read it. This is why it hurts so much to see this subject matter treated so poorly.

TLDR; this book is a hodgepodge of fantasy words assembled by someone with very little to any desire to polish their book beyond a grade 6-7-8 level of reading comprehension. It saddens me greatly to come to this conclusion because I really wanted this to work.

Doesn't deliver what was promised.

I'm not sure if the author is from Florida and somehow has a completely different view of what "Florida man" means to rest of the world, but with a blurb like this I expected a 2-IQ idiot doing batshit insane stuff. Instead we get a pretty generic low-stakes isekai with an OP edgy MC that borders on slice of life. With the MC constantly hiding and lowering his power to say with his weaker friends.

There's no story or goal except for some random quests that pop up with 1 larger overreaching quest that doesn't really move forward.

The characters are simple, but okay. The middle of the book is dedicated to giving each side character of the party their own mini-arc to build them up a bit, so they all get their time in the spotlight.

The world building is okay, but the "plot twist" ending kills both any potential for that to go anywhere and the just rest of the series for me.

So yeah, I'll be dropping it here.

I’m sad I finished

I’m glad I gave this a chance, it was such a rollercoaster of a ride. All of the characters in the party have their own personalities, including the side characters. I love the relationships between them all and how Zarian isn’t a scary leader to the party but their friend! I love that Zarian isn’t an edgy alone MC, don’t get me wrong I LOVE them but sometimes I really just want something different and this was exactly that. I very much look forward to the next book!!

If you’re debating reading this, READ IT. The beginning is a tad on the darker end (for some, I read a lot of dark books so it’s not too bad for me) but it definitely eases up.

An OP Wizard of Evil, trying to be Good for his Friends

Truly a fun read. There was so much story, but just a great adventure.
Imagine being on Earth today and having magic that you can't show anybody. Imagine opening a portal in a mall and accidentally pulling wall cops, workers and shoppers into another world. Then several of them dieing from dungeon monsters...
You can't be just a regular wizard, but you become an OP Wizard and the people that are still with you become a strong healer, strong fighter, a Rune Enchantress, and a +5Good doer (unheard of in the histories), but you are Evil +3 (super bad)...
... what tail?...

ok story

This story was just alright. Nothing amazing or horrible. I really struggled with the evil vs good affinity and how they meant nothing. People with good affinity could be rapists or muderers? Those with evil could be kind saints? Other than the MC Zorian, most seem to be a slave to their affinity. This didn’t sit right for me the whole book.

The characters just don’t make sense most of the time. The MC essentially kidnaps everyone into another world, getting many of them killed, forces them into one horrific scenario after another, but it’s all good? No one seems to mind?? Didn’t make sense.

I think a lot of people would enjoy this. Just not my cup of tea.

This story has a really dark start and a not very likable MC and I almost put it down. I'm glad I carried on as the story turns around and becomes much more entertaining. The MC has his ups and downs but gets better as he goes along. I will finish the series and I do recommend it. It has a most interesting set of magics and I like what the author has done with the mortal/god relationships. This was the first story by this author I have tried and I will definitely examine some of his other story lines. This will be a good read for most as long as they can take the darkness of the MC.

I don't usually like overpowered MCs. Usually. When executed well, intentionally, in a non-chezey way, it gets funny actually. Take a cocky yet chill, anti-authoritarian yet sociable ex-marine hallucinating-hobo and pair him with a wacky ensamble in an overpowered Isekai ride of a lifetime. Yes please!

For some reason Zarian's progression reminds me of Full Murder Hobo's vibes from book 3. I think it's because of the suave and patient attitude :))

Looking forward to the next book if it turns into a series. Especially after that ending.

Nope, not for me. I quit at 46% of the book

I tried, I kept pushing and pushing trying to get through this book. I could not do it. 46% of the book, and I still have no real idea what is going on. The author's voice is all over the place, the main character acts more like a secondary character, and the support characters are interesting but some evolve and develop too fast for the pace of the book, and one devolve refusing to recognise the new reality.

Truly, I hope you like it better than I did.

Florida man does what he wants, chaos ensues

Hunter Mythos has an insane talent for scope and storytelling. This is his 3rd series I will be buying in it's entirety and will be doing my best to hang on for the ride. If u want some casual chaotic neutral fun with a MASSIVE amount of adventure and badassery, look no further. Well actually go buy his other two series too, they all work together well. No lewd content.

As a fellow Floridian, I approve this series.

Book one

At more then 1400 pages this was a decent length story. It's a web serial being written on Royalroad. It's long enough that I gave up hunting mistakes, but I will still post what I found on Goodreads.

If you like OP insane evil wizards then this might be a good story for you. Most of the time the MC doesn't come across as evil. To me he just felt chaotic. It's a fun story though.

The best read of 2025 so far!

How can I say.... WOW.... without sounding like a kid in a big candy store. I honestly did not get how wonderful this story was going to be by the brief description before adding it to my library list to read. Now, I can wait till March 11th, 2024, to continue the adventure.

Awesome

This is the longest book I've read that wasn't actually multiple books stacked together. Although it could have been. I really enjoy OPMC stories, where the MC has to deal with issues that don't revolve around almost dying again and again even though this story kinda does that too. I am really looking forward to the next book!

Awesome and mind bending adventure

I’m starting to see a theme in Hunter Mythos’ novels. The main character is always OP and insane. This adventure starts fast and continues at a fast pace! There are monsters and mayhem aplenty sprinkled with a bit of altruistic kindness. I’m looking forward to adventures with this party.

A rare kind of idiot

The smelly, homeless army reject protagonist who talks to ghosts is rather mentally challenged. He hid for ages to train his magic paranoid of being used by dark state organisations only to run amok publicly to jump into a pond that he could have jumped into at any time without so much fuzz. He truly is a rare kind of idiot worthy of modern Hollywood..

DNF. I couldn't get past the beginning.

Starts off really dark, and the MCs actions rubbed me the wrong way. He seamed to have no (zero) agency. He involves a lot of innocent people and I'm out

Florida man in the multiverse

A great addition to the multiverse mythos is creating. I like that every story line follows a different individual. The action and characters in this one was top tier.

Just couldn't get into this one. Abandoned around the 30% mark. None of the characters (including the main character ) were very likeable, and at that point we didn't really know much about them besides some very superficial details.

Let me be clear: the premise was fantastic. The author has a great story on their hands. But the audible version of this book was crap. I read other books that this narrator worked on. They were good stories, but this one was horrible. It made the whole story fail from the get-go.

Quite a ride for the first book in a series

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but it was quite a bit of fun! The "overpowered" part is true, but Mythos handles it in a way that's pretty clever and mostly works. I'm really curious to see where he takes the story next.

Well developed characters

The characters actually had substance especially the main character. The game system is interesting and a touch unique. I didn't know what to expect of the storyline which is rare in this genre.
