A stray dog, a murder, a microchip worth killing for, a mysterious past, and the ongoing search for answers to the secret that started it all.

Bexley Cosgrove has a soft spot for abandoned animals after being abandoned herself as a young child. She knows she owes her life to the dog who found and rescued her, so as an adult, Bexley has committed her life to rescuing as many dogs and cats as possible.

In book 1 of a new spinoff series set in picturesque Gooseberry Bay, Bexley finds a dog hiding on the car deck of the ferry that runs between Seattle Washington and the peninsula where the small town of Gooseberry Bay is tucked onto the shoreline of a beautiful deepwater inlet. When Bexley can’t find the dog’s owner, she takes him to Bainbridge Island where the main facility of the rescue she runs with best friend, Denver Marshall, is located.

When Bexley discovers that the collar the dog was found wearing holds a secret at least one individual believes is worth killing for, she calls upon her friends in Gooseberry Bay to help her find the answers she’ll need to solve a murder and ensure the dogs safety.

Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home.
Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

This reads like the start of a great new cozy series! It has some of the characters from another series that are familiar to us and introduces us to new characters, like a young girl attached to an ankle monitor confined to the exclusive apartment complex, a former police detective that was forced to retire due to an injury and of course new animals...it also gives us what will be an on going mystery of the unknown past of one of the main characters who was found at age four abandoned in the care of a homeless dog. Sounds like a great series starter to me!

This is a cute little story. However I feel that the story is just all over the place with a lot of different things to peek your interest, but you don't get any real information about each thing that would peek you interest. I was able to finish this in a few days during my down time at work and will read the second book in the series in my down time at work. I just feel that if you are looking for something that would "sink it's claws into you" this isn't it. I can definitely put this down. Great read if you're looking to kill time.

Rescue on Gooseberry Bay: Canine Courier

This isn’t really my genre. It was a cute book and the plot was decent. There were too many characters to keep track of and their storylines didn’t really need to be part of this particular story. It looks like this will be a series. For the right person, this will be a great read, just not for me.

Canine Courier is the first book in Kathi Daley’s Rescue on Gooseberry Bay series. This series is a spin-off from Ms. Daley’s Cottage on Gooseberry Bay series, so not only are there many familiar characters, but some intriguing new ones. The well-plotted storyline flows smoothly, the setting is charming, and the well-developed characters are three-dimensional, compassionate, and caring. The complex and intriguing mystery, twists, and red herrings will keep readers engaged and guessing. Whenever I pick up one of Ms. Daley’s books, I know I’m in for a treat, and I’ve never been disappointed. Ms. Daley’s descriptive writing draws the reader in, making them feel like they’re taking part in the action. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading well-crafted, cozy mysteries.

After being found under a bridge while being protected and kept warm by a stray dog when she was four years old, Bexley Cosgrove developed a soft spot for all animals, especially those who have been abandoned. Bexley and one of her best friends, Denver Marshall, are the co-founders of Forever Home Pet Rescue. The rescue’s main facility is located on Bainbridge Island, Washington, and they currently have two adoption centers, one in Seattle and the other in Gooseberry Bay. Bexley constantly moves between the three locations and has a residence in each. Even though she truly treasures the “family” she has created in all three communities, as a woman in her thirties, Bexley’s greatest desire is to learn all the details of her life before she entered the foster care system twenty-nine years ago.

In this installment, Bexley travels from Seattle to the main rescue facility to pick up and transport two dogs who are ready for adoption to Gooseberry Bay. While riding the ferry between Seattle and Bainbridge Island, she finds a dog hiding on the car deck, who she painstakingly coaches to follow her to the rescue’s van. After alerting the ferry’s personnel about finding the dog, Bexley discovers a body in an unmarked panel van parked close to the rescue’s van. Since she’s unable to determine who the dog’s human is, Bexley decides to temporarily keep him with her rather than expose him to further stress. When someone appears to be searching for the dog, Bexley develops an unsettling feeling and begins to fear for the dog’s safety and her own. After Bexley discovers that the collar the dog was wearing when she found him holds a secret that someone believed was worth killing for, Bexley enlists the help of her friends to find the answers to solve the murder and ensure the dog’s safety.

It is no wonder why I loved this, I love most books this author writes... this is a spin-off from The Cottage on Gooseberry Bay series, and it's a must-read if you like good cosy mysteries with great characters and no cliff hangers. This series is especially good if you're an animal lover as it follows Bexley and her animal rescue charity.

In this first book we meet Bexley as she's travelling on the ferry between the islands off Seattle as she's going to collect a couple of dogs from their rehoming center to take them to their foster home. She finds a stray dog on the ferry, which leads her to find a dead body.

I loved how the story took us back to Gooseberry Bay and the characters we know and love from that series, but it also introduced us to new characters who I can see being a big part of this new series. I especially like how Kathi Daley can write about characters, and you can see how they may fit into futurebooks/new series.

I can see this is going to be another must-read series and one which I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book release from.

Like all the series Kathi writes, the books will be best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and wider storyline.

Bexley Cosgrove runs an animal rescue and has a soft spot for animals since she herself was rescued by a dog when she was a young child. In this book, Bexley finds a dog hiding on the ferry she's riding on. She can't find an owner, but does find a dead man. She takes the dog with her and soon discovers a secret in the dog's collar. So she and her friends help investigate to find a killer and keep the dog safe.

This is the first book in a new series that's a spinoff of the Gooseberry Bay series. It was a quick, fun read that was well-written and had wonderful characters. I was drawn into this captivating story and kept hooked from beginning to end. The mystery was very intriguing with lots of twists and turns. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to many more. Kathi Daley is one of my favorite cozy mystery authors and this book's a prime example of why. It's an excellent start to a new series and I highly recommend it.

A nice light mystery that focuses on a woman who runs an animal rescue. There was a lot of re-telling of events by one character to another, which got old after a while. A lot of time was also spent on side topics instead of the main mystery. The side trips did go toward introducing and developing the extra characters and showed the relationship to the main character, Bex. It was a nice, easy read.

Bex, the owner of a rescue, saves a rottweiler mix when the driver of the van he was in is murdered. Bex takes in the dog, and while trying to discover the owner, she helps discover who killed the driver of the van the dog was originally in.

This seems like it’ll be a fun spin-off series for the Cottage at Gooseberry Bay series. I already know most of the supporting characters and the ones I didn’t, I figure I haven’t read far enough in the original series yet to know. Sully was an awesome character and I loved how he bonded with Jax, the dog Bex found who’d been at a murder scene. She and Parker had quite the adventure, something Parker was pretty used to as a reporter, but Bex not so much. Everything turned out for the best and sweet Jax definitely got his doggy happily ever after home.

I do enjoy a quick easy read sometimes. Kathi Daley. provides that with her cozy mystery series. They’re all quick reads that really have you enjoying the characters. I don’t usually rate them because for a cozy they are usually 4 to 5 stars, however, it is not the same as a bigger novel and I don’t think the comparison is the same.
I did enjoy meeting some new characters in the series, Sully and Max. It’ll be interesting to see how she develops Bex’s background story into the series. Will we see a relationship develop with Remi?

Great spin off

Kathi is great at writing spin offs and it is good going in knowing some of the people and the places involved. Bexley is a great person with several animal rescue locations and adoption centers. She stumbled across a stray dog on the ferry only to discover the driver of the vehicle he was in dead. Lots of things happen with the dog and people after him but in end it all worked out.

Great beginning to a new series

I’ve enjoyed the Gooseberry Bay books, and this new series with Bex as the main character, is a good “branch of the tree”, so to speak. There were enough familiar characters as well as several new ones. I’ll be looking forward to the next book in the Rescue series.

wonderful beginning

This was a great start to a spin off. I will admit that cast of characters seemed overwhelming, blending one series with another. But I managed. I do hope in future books Rescue is able to be a little more independent from Cottage. But this was very enjoyable and I’m excited to continue.

I made it through half the book but unfortunately it’s a DNF. I loved the concept of a cozy mystery combined with animal rescue, but the didn’t story hold my interest. There was an overabundance of tedious dialogue between characters which I found really distracting, and I just couldn’t get into the writing style.

Predictable

I like the rescue spinoff angle. I felt the reason the guy was looking for the dog became very predictable when Sully asked for a different collar for Jax because the one on him was so bulky. A dog collar as a way to transport stuff has been used many times.

Bexly finds a dog hiding on the farey.

Not only finding a dog but also a man who has been murdered and it appears the dog was in that same van at some point. Lots of intrigue and speculation as to why and how but it is a good read. Enjoy.

Interesting

This was a good short mystery, but I still have unanswered questions. I am looking forward to finding those answers in a future book.

I really tried to like this book

I liked the premise but I kept saying to myself, "Nobody talks like that". I couldn't get past the stilted use of language.

Great book

I love the basis for this series, rescuing dogs and finding them forever homes. This book gets very involved and a murder on the ferry and with Bexley's past
