Direct realization versus love and devotion for God with form – are these two paths mutually exclusive? David Newman (Durga Das) tells of an unexpected inner journey that led him to ask himself: Was I leaving my devotional path behind, or was the pursuit of a conclusive spiritual awakening the very revelation that the path itself had indicated? David’s journey started with what he calls a ‘lightning bolt’, which led him to question his own identity. With heart-warming honesty, he relates how the integration of the two paths came about through unwavering grace. What I was initially most afraid of ultimately brought the greatest gift.
Easy to read and a lovely recounting of the end of the journey and the beginning of utterly authentic living. For anyone who is/was seeking the truth of their nature and who wishes to seek no longer. It brings to my mind the lyrics of a song that has, since it was written in the '70s, inspired me and infused me with a joy for life.
"When you open up your heart to the living/all things come spilling in on you/and your flowing like a river/the Changer and the Changed/you've got to spill some over/spill some over/spill some over, over all" -- Chris Williamson "Waterfall"
That is what David Newman has done, too. He has spilled over his life into ours and it is all One. Om Shanti...
As a fan of David Newman's music, I wanted to learn more about his story and spiritual journey. This is a short, easy to read book and in it, Newman shares about his journey to awakening. I must admit, I had my own spiritual "a-ha" as I got to the end of this book. If you are spiritually-minded or on a bhakti path, you will appreciate this book!
3.5 stars. In my opinion, the last 90% of the book is where it gets good. Newman drops good points here and there throughout the book but I truthfully have no idea who he is and therefore wasn’t entirely interested in reading about his life however I do recognize context was needed to get certain points across and the few pieces of spiritual insight in the first 85% of the book was compelling enough to keep my interest till the end. As someone who is still trying to conceptualize and embody the simplicity of ‘I am’ I do wish he had elaborated more at the end yet I do appreciate the straightforward explanation; now I merely have to understand it truly is that simple.
I found David 's book very helpful because I am in a similar situation going from being a beauty to wanting to embody oneness. Great descriptions of awakening and quotes from his mentors.
