About the
Join Adam in this weak-to-strong progression fantasy where victories are difficult but earned. The plot has consistent forward momentum, and the story's cast of characters is fully fleshed-out, each with their own struggles. Hello all you lovely people! My name is Brett - a.k.a. KamikazePotato - and I've been a massive fan of fantasy stories since the first time I first picked up a book. Over the years, I've devoured well over 100 fantasy novels, dozens of fantasy video games, plenty of fantasy TV shows and movies...you get the idea.

Naturally, this made me want to create a fantasy world of my own. Around the time I decided to sit down and write a story I would actually share with everyone, I also got into the LitRPG genre, and here we are.

I plan to write plenty more stories in this genre, and to spread my wings out to other genres as well! Writing is a joy, and so is getting to see people enjoy what I've created.

DNF@ 60%.

Interesting ideas, but this has to be one of the most frustrating books I have ever attempted to read.

There is a running problem in the LitRPG genre of long, tedious internal monologues completely disrupting the flow of every scene. This one takes it to a level that borders on parody.

To put it into perspective, there is a single fight that lasts around 50 pages. Why? Because for every one action the MC or his opponent takes, there is 3-4 pages of rambling monologue. This also applies to dialogue. Character says a line, MC spends 2 pages thinking about what they said, responds, then spends another 2 pages thinking about his response. It all feels so unnatural.

Every character is unlikable. It feels like the author decided that "smug" was the ultimate character trait, and just decided to slap it on every single character as their entire personality and call it a day.

I finally had to drop it for my own sanity when the MC brought up "I dunno if I can trust this person yet..." for what felt like the hundredth time. Every few pages: I can't trust this person. Can I trust this person? I can't really trust anyone. They seem trustworthy... but no. No trust. Trust? Nah.

I am just ranting at this point, but seriously. Save yourself the headache.

Interesting idea. I envisioned something very different from what I got. The skill was a lot more complex and slower acting than I thought it would be. The setting involved a lot of politics which was a nice change or pace. Great start!

Great book

Rich characters, unusual premise, reminds me of Guy Gavriel Kay's work, I am looking forward to the next in the series!

Sooo Good, I can’t wait for the next one!

I love this book so much! I love Tenver so much! Adam is also a really interesting main character. But Tenver has the perfect energy that is just crazy and charismatic I love him and if anything happens to him I will cry a lot lol. This book explores an interesting magic system and complex social dynamics. I can’t wait for the next one!

Ohhhh! Myyy! That was Interesting! Might I say it was som'min else! I've never run into it's ilk before! But I loved it! And wouldn't you expect that someone that had the balls to go by the moniker KamikazePotato would come up with this novel storyline... not only surprising and new but with kinda different sorta magic system. And one that really works. Yeah, there's still a core and mana, but to level up you hafta spend money 💰 the more you spend the stronger you get. And we're not talkin about a few bucks, oh no, more like thousands, tens of thousands.
And this is Adam's story, the starving art student trying to balance his tuition fees and cost of living. If only he'd won the contest with his painting 😪 losing to Eric a supposed friend... well it was a hard punch to the gut. Since he knew sleep wasn't gonna happen he ended up at a shop looking at their gallery again. To his amazement he spotted a new painting, it was magical and to no one's surprise it sucked him into the World of Paint.
And what Adam does next is for you to find out when you grab the audiobook! Because Wayne Mitchell is worth listening to.

I really liked how the book show Adam slowly learning to trust again. There were many times reading this book that I felt that he should just trust Tenver and it would all work out fine and yet I understood why he didn't. I also really like how the main character had a personality.

I liked how the female characters were interesting and had their own personalities (Solara is a badass but Valeria is my favorite).

I found it interesting how the authors showed how economic disadvantages really impacted how good someone could be and how unfair that is. But also that it wasn't just how talented you were, that honing your talent could make it more precise and that could over power better talents. I think it is a really good mechanism to both show that hard work can matter even in a deeply unfair system.

Extremely cool

This book has a unique concept and clever execution.

The main character and some of the supporting characters are very well written and detailed. Other supporting characters are more mysterious for now, but still well written enough for that. I especially appreciate the writing of the inner thoughts of the main character, which really brought him to life.

The world is cool, but still undetailed, despite going for a fairly "hard magic" approach. I'm interest to see where it goes.

The plot is on the episodic side, but each story is interesting. It isn't until near the end that there are some indications of an overarching plot that will come in the future.

I read 95% of the book in one day. It was great.

Skill system is interesting and unique. But that's where the good parts end.

MC's thought process is absolutely frustrating and not explained till the end as if this was a murder mystery book... but wait the book BECOMES a murder mystery part way through.

And let's not forget the constant trust issues MC has... can I trust him? no I can't... not yet...
Which is then compounded when one of those he needs to trust lies and puts him on the spot to back up that lie just to show that MC trusts him like what sort of logic is that?

I was a little disappointed that Adam seemed to understand the needs of his mysterious talent so suddenly well. What was the impetus for the leap between his desperate desire to put his heart and soul into the first painting of the lion, and knowing what to do to sufficiently paint the city lord?

Similarly, the fight with the Ghost of Waters seemed a wee bit more serendipitous than I’d expect to be believable. But I’m curious to learn what Eric did to earn Adam’s enmity, and how are they both in the Painted World.

standard KP book. broken main character thrust into a horrible world with terrible people. the issue is that the setting has complexity that is not explained, giving a very skewed appearance. this makes the beginning a slog of pointless reading. i don't need a reskinned version of the previous series.

I got 8% through this book before I gave up. I've read similiar books and enjoyed them but here I had to force myself to keep going to even get to 8%. There was nothing wrong with the writing (hence the two stars) it just failed to engage me. I am happy to support others who can enjoy this book, for me, however, I just didn't care about the MC, his powers or the world he found himself in.

To see true beauty

This book made me think of my sister when she was in school because she did digital art, too. I loved that he was doing his art on a tablet, which I pictured as an IPad. I loved that he was able to help people with his gifts. I laughed and cried throughout the story. I can't wait to read the next one.

really enjoyed

Super fun and a very different world compared to other series. Just gotta be mindful not to be lost in its own cleverness. I personally love the flavor of thinking and scheming but others may find themselves scratching their own head a lil to much

Not good

A suicidal mc who is a painter. Really that's about it!! The writer could not go a paragraph without putting that in. Then after only using it once he was able to take down a Lord yeah right!!

it my cup of tea

Not my cup of tea but an interesting story nonetheless. If you’re looking for something that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this might be for you. There is just too much plot armor and too many intentionally obtuse misdirects for me.

Not for Me; Stopped at 20%

Plot and characters are a bit too shallow for my taste… feel a bit flat. Maybe it’s more YA-oriented? Not sure but either way, I lost interest around 20% and decided to find something else to read.

This book was touted as a LitRPG but it was hardly that. It was a slow progression story where the main character doesn't use his new powers, just uses his original talent. If you are looking for a LitRPG, you'll not find it here.

Start of another series by Kamikaze Potato exploring litRPG protagonists who really aren't comfortable with the role they have been cast in.

would be good if it were less irritating

The MC of this story swings wildly between suicidal depression and a 中二病 / “Chuuni” level of delusions of grandeur.
