The Parasol Ants and the Bengal Cat (Unlikely Friends) from the Belonging series by Judy Cicero is one of those children’s books that just makes you smile from the start. It’s fun, imaginative, and full of personality, with a storyline that brings together two completely different types of creatures in a way that feels both entertaining and surprisingly sweet.
The idea of parasol ants and a Bengal cat forming an unlikely friendship creates plenty of playful moments, and it’s the kind of story kids will enjoy hearing again and again. It reads smoothly and works really well as a read-aloud, which is always a big win.
The illustrations are a standout. They’re bright, expressive, and full of charm, adding an extra layer of humor and warmth to the story. The pictures don’t just sit there—they help tell the story right alongside the words, which makes the whole experience more engaging.
My only real downside—and it’s an important one—is that the digital version isn’t accessible to those who use screen readers like VoiceOver. That does limit who can fully enjoy the book, which is a shame because the story itself is so delightful.
Overall, this is a sweet, entertaining read that’s perfect for young children, especially those who love animals and a little bit of silly fun mixed with heart.
