Lizzie Hardwicke #3

Viper in the Nest

Rate this book
A gripping and vividly imagined historical mystery set in 18th century London, from the author of acclaimed historical novel The Dazzle of the Light.

London, June 1759. When a charmless civil servant takes his own life, few are interested in his death. But Lizzie Hardwicke, who plies her trade in the brothels of London whilst also working as an undercover sleuth for the magistrate, can see no reason why a man who had everything to look forward to would wish to end his life.

Lizzie's search for answers takes her from the smoke-filled rooms of fashionable gambling houses, where politicians mix ambition with pleasure, to the violent streets of Soho, ready to erupt with riots in the sultry summer heat. All the while, she is navigating her complicated feelings for the magistrate's trusted assistant, Will Davenport, and a disturbing situation at home.

Then a gambling house owner is brutally murdered, and Lizzie finds herself tangled in a chaos that she cannot control. The darkest of secrets threatens to turn Davenport against her forever; its exposure will send her to the gallows.

Georgina Clarke has a degree in theology and a PhD in history but has only recently started to combine her love of the past with a desire to write stories. Her Lizzie Hardwicke series is set in the mid-eighteenth century, an underrated and often neglected period, but one that is rich in possibility for a crime novelist.
The Dazzle of the Light is a standalone historical novel that features another period of history she enjoys - the early twentieth century.
She enjoys running along the banks of the River Severn and is sometimes to be found competing in half marathons. In quieter moments, she also enjoys dressmaking.
She lives in Worcester with her husband and son, and two extremely lively cats.

I haven’t read either of the previous books in the series – Death and the Harlot and The Corpse Played Dead – which puts me in the perfect position to assure you Viper in the Nest can definitely be read as a standalone.

You can’t help but become engaged in the story from the start with the sudden and seemingly inexplicable suicide of a man who seemed to have everything. But was it all built on sand? Just how did a clerk working in a government office acquire the wealth to afford a large house and a mistress? As Lizzie observes, ‘Mr Merrick, the dullest man in London, was beginning to intrigue me.’

At one point a character says to Lizzie, ‘I think you’re like a terrier with a bone, agitating people until you find answers’ and there was never a truer word said because Lizzie can’t stop herself trying to find out the truth. She’s a brilliant character: resourceful, clever, witty and a loyal friend. She’s used to dissembling, pretending attraction where there is none. But her insatiable curiosity brings her dangerous enemies.

Always at the back of Lizzie’s mind are the circumstances that brought about such a change in her life and social status. She’s determined that will change one day but a new arrival at the Berwick Street brothel threatens her plans.

I liked the way the story demonstrated the divisions in society with many citizens of London living in abject poverty whilst the rich (mostly men) while away the hours gambling, whoring and seeking preferment in whatever way they can. The epitome of this excess is the bizarre personal bets, often involving thousands of pounds, placed on events such as what the weather will be on a particular day.

I enjoyed the simmering relationship between Lizzie and magistrate’s assistant, William Davenport. Despite signs of mutual attraction, Lizzie’s mindful that a harlot doesn’t make an ideal wife for a man in William’s position.

Viper in the Nest is a really entertaining historical mystery with a skilfully crafted plot and great period atmosphere. I hope there will be more adventures to come for Lizzie.

Georgina Clarke has done it again. This is the third book in the Lizzie Hardwicke series of books, and it's my favourite. If I could give this book six stars, I would.

Lizzie is such a fantastic and strong protagonist that I love reading these stories. She takes you on an amazing trip through 1700s London and the life of a harlot in those times. She is constantly facing danger, both in her work with Will Davenport for the magistrate but also in her home/work life, especially in this book where there is a new, dangerous addition to Berwick Street.

The characters are so well fleshed out, especially Lizzie, that they take you along on a ride that is so difficult to put down. There are twists and turns throughout the book that make the outcome even more shocking. Georgina Clarke has a beautiful way of writing a book, especially a piece of historical fiction like this, which makes her books impossible to resist.

Roll on book four. I need more Lizzie Hardwicke in my life.

This story is centred around Lizzie Hardwicke amateur sleuth by day and, a high-end harlot by night. Lizzie is back to solve another mystery along with the magistrate's assistant Will Davenport. This one sees her on the wrong end of the law.

I was pleasantly surprised by this historical crime story. This one was fun to read and a really enjoyable story. It is the third in the Lizzie Hardwicke series but it can be read as a stand-alone. That said, I will be getting the previous two to read.

I loved Lizzie's character, there is more to her than meets the eye. Given her line of work, She is charming, smart and extremely likeable. I'm not sure how much of her back story is in the two previous books, but I wanted to know more about her. All the characters in the book you either love them or hate them, with interesting back stories.
I loved the connection that Lizzie has with Will. You can see that they want something more than friendship.

I felt invested in the different plot threads in this story and enjoyed trying to work out what was going on and how they were linked together. I couldn't work it out and it kept me guessing up till the end.

As much as this is a murder mystery, it also shows us how women were treated at this period in time. The day-to-day challenges they face, no matter what class they come from. A very dangerous time for a woman.

Viper In The Nest is full of twists, secrets and mystery. It's charming, witty and atmospheric. At times dark and disturbing. It sets the tone for the sinister streets of London. A compelling murder mystery mixed with a great setting, full of strong women and a touch of romance.

Thank you Verve Books for including me on this Blog tour.

I am deeply thankful to finally hold the third installment of the Lizzie Hardwicke series in my hands and to be swept back into this captivating world once again. When Lizzie remarked that it had only been a week since she had last seen Davenport (the closing events of book two), all I could think was, "It’s been two years for me!"

This latest volume picks up seamlessly from where the previous one left off, drawing us once more into the life of Lizzie — a 19-year-old sex worker and part-time sleuth whose inquisitive spirit inevitably entangles her in another gripping mystery. What initially appears to be a simple investigation into the death of an acquaintance quickly spirals into a complex web of interconnected cases and individuals, skillfully woven through the novel’s many twists and turns.

The book carries a somber tone, with Lizzie finding herself in the heart of turmoil troubling London with dangerous riots, gang violence and robberies where wealthy homes are ransacked and hostile sentiments and assaults are prevalent directed toward London's Jewish communities.

The prose is so richly immersive that I felt transported, living and breathing the streets of 18th-century London. Georgina’s vivid descriptions of the locations Lizzie explores and the characters she encounters truly bring the setting to life in a way few authors manage to achieve.

And a special, heartfelt thank you to Georgina for making page 165 happen — I literally leapt out of bed and jumped up and down in excitement, something very few books have ever inspired me to do! I am certainly looking forward to this relationship developing in future books!

Of all three novels thus far, this entry sees Lizzie enduring her most harrowing challenges yet. Her experiences offered a stark and eye-opening glimpse into the brutal realities faced by women of that era — a perspective that was both moving and deeply educational.

I will continue singing the praises of this brilliant series until my very last breath and will wait, however long it takes, for the honor of holding book four in my hands.

Many thanks to Verve Books and NetGalley for granting me early access to this absolute gem!

It's June 1759, and London is in the midst of a sultry summer. A London that is rife with violence and the threat of riots erupting, palpable. Lizzie Hardwicke is busy playing her trade in Soho's brothels when a civil servant linked to one of her fellow working girls seemingly commits suicide. Lizzie's experience as an undercover sleuth for a local magistrate kicks in, and her instincts lead her into seeking answers from fashionable gambling houses where politicians mix pleasure with ambition. With a dangerous new arrival, making life difficult at the brothels and a gambling house owner brutally murdered. Dark secrets threaten to ruin her burgeoning relationship with magistrate assistant William Davenport and the potential to send her to the gallows herself. Lizzie faces a race against time to find answers in order to save herself and restore order to the streets of Soho.

I absolutely loved this latest instalment in the series. Georgiba has created a brilliant protagonist in Lizzie. Who is strong, tenacious, fearsome, unconventional, inquisitive, kind, caring, and ready to face anything in order to better her life, circumstances, and seek justice for those who need it most. The story is action-packed. With brilliantly drawn and developed characters. Vivid and descriptive scene setting and excellent attention to detail. With snippets of back story littered throughout, giving her readers a little reminder of adventures past. Little red herrings, twists, and turns galore. Great pace, fluid plotline, and a fabulous array of supporting characters. Viper in the Nest is a firm contender for one of my favourite historical fiction stories in recent years.

I hope we see Lizzie again soon!

The Dazzle of the Light by Georgina Clarke was one of my favourite reads in 2022, so I was excited to read the latest in her 18th-century crime mystery series. This is the third in the series but can be read as a stand-alone. Since reading it i have bought the first two to go back and read.

Lizzie Hardwicke is forced to work in the brothels of London for an income. She also works as an (unpaid).undercover sleuth for the magistrate. When a young man commits suicide Lizzie joins forces with Will Davenport, local law enforcer and magistrate's assistant, to try and find out what led him to such a drastic action. Soon, there are more unexplained murders too.

I absolutely love Georgina Clarke's writing. She brings to life all aspects of 18th century life in such a realistic way that you feel as though you're there too.
I loved joining Lizzie inside the smoke-filled rooms of the fashionable gambling houses and then out onto the precarious London streets.
There are a brilliant cast of memorable characters too who are also vividly brought to life. There are some really vile characters and some quite shocking scenes, too. Lizzie really has a lot of horrifying experiences in this book.
Towards the end, she even faces being sent to the gallows!
The secrets slowly reveal themselves as we find out some of the character's true intentions. I couldn't put this book down and raced through it! I have recently planned my April Hopefuls but I'm very tempted to read the first and second book in the series next as I loved this one so much!
Highly recommended!

When one of her fellow whores is set up by an admirer Lizzie isn't jealous because the man is an utter bore. However, when he shoots himself days later Lizzie is intrigued. Her investigation leads to a group of men who were former friends and to the house of a physician. As the daughter of the house is expected to marry Mr Davenport, Lizzie is torn when she realises that the solution to one of her issues involves that family. Unfortunately before she can solve the crime another takes place and leaves Lizzie is danger
I was frustrated not to be able to read an earlier book in the series due to a netgalley download problem but I requested this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. The actual procedural part is intriguing and works well but it is the setting that really gripped me. The novel is set in London in the mid-Georgian period and is great in terms of portraying a London which is flush with new money and ready for scandal. Little detail is given about Lizzie's work as a prostitute so this is light and not salacious - that makes it great fun

I loved all of these books to date, and I have waited a long time for the third vividly gripping historical instalment of Lizzie and Davenport. It didn't disappoint. You can almost smell and hear 18th century London jumping out of the pages at you. Roll on book 4.

Another beautifully created historical drama that brings the streets of London alive such that you can almost smell the horse manure on the cobbles. Here Lizzie ventures into the smoke-filled gaming houses, where rich and powerful boast and wager, as well as being entertained by the prostitutes, the only women allowed to enter.

It’s not only the setting though, the reader also gets an idea of the attitudes and morals of the period too. Scratch through the veneer of respectability and you find hypocrisy and debauchery. On the streets there are riots, and it is the Jews who are once again bearing the brunt of their collective anger. This is a totally immersive experience.

The plot has Lizzie scurrying around first trying to establish why the suicide happened, but then this leads into a murder. There are several disparate parts to it but thanks clever plotting they all come together beautifully with a great conclusion and a couple of loose threads to be picked at in the next instalment. This is one of those plots where you just have to marvel and wonder just how they came up with it. It is also somewhat darker than the previous stories and touches on the taboo.
The storytelling moves along briskly, aided by regular interludes of danger and jeopardy, Lizzie certainly has a tough time of it both physically and emotionally. The scenes in the White Horse bring a natural break, a chance to take stock and for playfulness with the owners and the ‘strumpet’.

This is a story about families and close relationships. There is Davenport’s closeness to the Drake family, whose support and friendship he has had over many years. A friendship that threatens to drive a wedge between him and Lizzie. There is surprise when Lizzie discovers that Arthur the (believed) owner of the gambling club also has a family, something he had never mentioned in all their chats. She is to learn there is good reason why they are kept secret. Finally, there is the long married but still caring relationship of Harry and Anne the owners of the White Horse Inn.

Lizzie is such an engaging character you can almost feel her anguish in this story as the world she rebuilt around her threatens to come crashing down. Like Lucy she has her plans but just as Lucy’s dreams a crushed so might Lizzie’s, she is strong and resilient though, a survivor. She is also a great detective bringing empathy and understanding to her intellect and keen observation.

A dark but captivating tale set on the streets of Georgian London. Best one of the series so far and really sets up book four nicely.

This is the third book in the Lizzie Hardwicke series, and there is a much darker tone throughout, with an increase in violence and cruelty to both man and beasts. There are issues of dangerous riots in the poorer quarters , ostensibly aimed at the increase in tax upon beer and wine, but there are also targeted attacks upon the Jewish communities of London. Houses are being broken into and valuables stolen. The Runners are at full stretch trying to keep both order and citizens safe..
Gentlemen’s clubs are a hotbed of rich men and loose morals. Reckless wagers can lead to blackmail and in this case Government corruption leads to tragedy.
In Berwick Street, Ma Farley’s Bawdy house sees an unwelcome visitor, in the form of Ma’s husband, who has unexpectedly returned and has taken charge, things change for the worse for Lizzie and her fellow workers.
Lizzie is again recruited by Mr Fielding, the local magistrate, to help Detective Davenport try to get to grips with recent events, as she has both the necessary street knowledge and her experience of” being all things to all men”” might allow valuable insights into the motives behind the spate of murders., but this not without great risk to Lizzie.
Lizzie remains a frank talking, funny and very likeable character, her education and knowledge of Latin helps in solving a rather complex case that has enormous consequences for both Lizzie and Davenport. Whilst both Lizzie and William are still attracted to each other, there are now trust issues that need to be addressed before they can acknowledge their growing affection and admiration for each other.
Hopefully the next book will set these fears at rest?
My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers Verve Books for my advanced read freely given in exchange for my honest review. A five star read.
I will leave copies to Goodreads and Amazon UK upon publication.

'A Harlots life can turn in an instant. She can be the toast of the town at noon and find herself slumped in an alleyway and riddled with the pox by sunset....'

I ended the month of March back in Georgian London on another adventure with the force of nature that is our very own Lizzie Hardwicke. The third book in this series we join Lizzie Hardwicke, Harlot by night and amateur detective by day, and the dashing but very reserved magistrate Will Davenport as they join forces again to solve a spate of murders, unexplained deaths and dirty, underground and underhand dealings.

This is another wild and thrilling ride through the dirty and murky streets of London with a secret held in every building and a shocking surprise lurking on every corner. What I love about this author is the brilliant way she manages to perfectly capture the class distinctions. You explore the dark underbelly of its back streets with all it's openness and brutal honesty compared to the seedy underhandedness of the aristocracy wrapped up in all it's fake decadence and riches.

It's a story full of twists, turns and surprises. It's disturbing, shocking, funny, thought provoking, dark and graphic. Full of a colourful cast of characters who are all well developed and memorable I can honestly say Lizzie and William have both found a permanent place in my heart. As frustrating as their relationship is I cannot wait to see what happens in their future... I hope the author doesn't keep us waiting too long....

Fans of historical fiction, a good murder mystery with a bit of darkness and the macabre thrown in for good measure will absolutely love this ....a rollicking good yarn 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This was really enjoyable, the author builds up layers of the story from the very start to the end while leaving clues here and there to piece together. It starts off slow but soon the reader is broiled in the plot with deaths and other criminal activity and working out how all the actions and characters fit in with each other. The right balance of complexity to the plot and character development was struck and concentrating on both built up this picture that really sucked me in.

I loved the main character, she is mysterious and smart and knows how to survive, and we got to see her personal life and relationships while she was solving a murder. There were some nail biting moments the nearer we got to the end where I was afraid of what was going to happen to her.

This is the third in the series, however they don't need to read in order as they are stories on their own. It is clear other events have happened by what is written in this book, but this book was logical and its own event. The only thing missing by not reading the first two is the relationship between Lizzie and Davenport.

After a bit of a wait from the second in series (I went back to re-read the two previous books to refresh my memory...just as good as I remembered), I was thrilled to find that Lizzie Hardwicke is back (hopefully to stay!).

I love this series mainly because of the heroine, Lizzie, a young woman basically forced into prostitution. She is fearless, cunning, brilliant and a joy to watch as she uses her curiosity and keen observance skills to often run circles around both her clients and the Bow Street Runners that she sometimes works for as an informant.

This particular book is a bit darker than previous outings (violence, sexual/emotional abuse), but it's all for showing Lizzie's strength and determination in overcoming her current life circumstances. I rooted for her, sympathized with her and was outraged right alongside her.
She is joined by a stellar cast of side characters including a love interest (who is maybe not written quite as strongly as I would like?).

Here's hoping there is more coming from Lizzie. Please keep them coming, Ms. Clarke.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Thrilling, Immersive Historical Mystery

Viper in the Nest is the third instalment in Georgina Clarke’s Lizzie Hardwicke series, brilliantly narrated by Sophie Ward. We’re in London, 1759, where Lizzie—high-priced harlot, razor-sharp thinker, and occasional Bow Street collaborator—is once again swept into danger.

When her friend Lucy’s protector dies suddenly, Lizzie is there to witness it. What looks like suicide quickly unravels into a web of intrigue involving politicians, gambling houses, brothel owners—even Lizzie’s own livelihood.

Alongside Bow Street runner Will Davenport, Lizzie navigates high stakes and higher risks. Their simmering, impossible attraction adds another layer—Lizzie knows they can never truly be together, but that doesn’t stop her (or me!) from hoping.

This series delivers everything I love in historical mysteries: an immersive setting, visceral detail, intelligent plotting, and complex, very human characters. Lizzie’s resilience and wit make her unforgettable, and I’m thrilled this series is continuing. Bring on the next adventure!

I’ve read the first two Lizzie Hardwick books and was delighted when book 3 finally appeared - I was worried she’d gone.
Young, resourceful, educated but through some bad choices, rejected by her family, she works as a more upper-class prostitute in London.
Lucy, one of the young very pretty prostitutes, finds a rich, dull client who takes her away from Ma’s bawdy house to be mistress of his new house in Bond Street. Lizzie and some of the other girls go to visit Lucy. Lucy tells them the only people she has got to know are the next door neighbours, an old eminent doctor and his ex-actress (often women of loose morals at the time) wife. (Lizzie will find herself involved with this family.) Before the visit is up Lucy’s ‘lover’ takes himself off to his library and shoots himself.
Lizzie decides she must find out why this happened. William Davenport comes into her life again, the only man she’s ever cared about and the detective who got her involved in his investigations.
The story involves brutal murders, riots, beatings and Lizzie gets arrested.
The picture the author paints of London and its gambling dens, the heat and senseless rioting and corrupt men of rank, feels very real. The degradation Lizzie has to put up with and just has to accept breaks your heart. Even William becomes unsure of her despite his feelings for her. At all times she is determined to uncover the truth and to help those in need. She’s a great character.

Book 3 in the Lizzie Hardwicke Mystery series set in the 18th century, however I read it as a standalone and thoroughly enjoyed it. We follow Lizzie who works in a brothel in London whilst secretly working undercover for the magistrate as an amateur sleuth. When one of the girls in the brothel is taken on by a rich man to be his companion Lizzie is excited for her to get on in life. However things change rather unexpectedly when he takes his own life whilst Lizzie is visiting. She is positive there is more to it and begins to dig around for information assisting Will Davenport in the investigation. There is a mutual attraction between the two of them and the tension is palpable throughout the book. Can they come together to solve the case before anyone else gets hurt?

The scene setting is fantastic from the smoke filled bars to the dirty streets of London you really get a sense of that time. We meet some pretty horrible characters throughout this book and the way Lizzie is treated is it at times horrifying. She is such a strong character and it’s easy to see why some of the others look up to her. An unsuspecting heroine in this story, Lizzie is strong and won’t let anything stand in her way in the race to get to the truth.

A fabulous historical mystery series.

Viper in the Nest is the third in the series, but can be read as a standalone.

Here we follow Lizzie Hardwicke, who works in a London brothel, but is also an unpaid sleuth for the local magistrate. When a young man commits suicide under suspicious circumstances, Lizzie is in the case, and when there are a series murderer too, Lizzie and Will ( a law enforcer and magistrate's assistant ), are called to action.

Want to know more? Be sure to pick your copy up to find out.

So all in all, this was a great descriptive read that brilliantly conjurs up the sights, smells and sounds of the 18th century.

I really like Lizzie's character. She's funny, straight talking, strong, intelligent, kind and caring.

The story is fast paced, with lots of great action, and the writing is wonderfully descriptive amd vivid.

What a great read!

This was the perfect weekend read, even though I finished it in one day, I picked this up on Saturday as I was craving a thrilling historical read and this murder mystery delivered on everything it promised in the blurb! I was absolutely blown away by this griping plot, fun twists and turns that keep you hooked through out there was never a dull moment.

This is my first in the series but it’s safe to say I will be going back and reading the previous books as I immensely enjoyed this read! While this is a darker book I loved how the author wrote it, it felt gritty but real, I could clearly picture every scene she was describing! If you’re looking for your next gripping read look no further!

In the third book in this series, matters take a very dark turn. A very dull civil servant takes his own life, while Lizzie is chatting to his mistress Lucy. She is determined to help her friend discover why he acted so out of character, but is warned off repeatedly. Meanwhile life at Berwick Street becomes very uncomfortable as Ma's husband returns and starts throwing his weight about, and then the manager of a successful gambling den is killed in a particularly gruesome manner. Lizzie is drawn into all this, at much personal peril.

And then William Davenport decides to get married - has Lizzie lost her beau? The tension between the two mounts.

A great series and thoroughly enjoyable romp through 18th century London.

I have not read any of the previous books in this series but this read so well as a stand alone: the characters were very well developed & the scenes were set equally as well. I absolutely loved this book & read it in no time! I loved the plucky main character, Lizzie Hardwicke & you didn’t know what she was going to get involved with next! The story did not go how I thought it would, it was unpredictable which I liked. I have already ordered the audiobook of the first in the series & can’t wait to get that!

I’ve absolutely devoured this series over the last few weeks, I adore Lizzie and all other “ladies” she’s works with, well maybe not Lucy so much! Not only is Lizzie a harlot but she works undercover sometimes for the magistrate helping to solve crimes during her non-working hours.

She’s lived a hard life but doesn’t let this stop her, she’s fun, inquisitive and intelligent. This time there is unrest through most of London and it’s coming closer to her door. Then the unthinkable happens, someone dies close to her and her friends but she’s not convinced it was as straight forward as it seems. But during her investigation, other crimes are revealed and soon Lizzie is in danger once more. She’s determined though to prove her innocence and work out what’s been going on.

I have really enjoyed this series, I loved historical fiction and this is such a unique MC to have. There’s some great humour dotted throughout, some great one-liners and proper gutter talk too, but it’s just fab, all in keeping with the times and characters. I’m really hoping for more in this series, I’ve enjoyed them all so much.

Very entertaining! I enjoyed again meeting Lizzie and Davenport again in one adventure that touches them very personally indeed! Quite a bit of action, gripping plot set in an unruly London. I like Lizzie a lot, a proud, lovely, witty and resilient woman whose curiosity leads her to danger which she somehow relishes....
I can't wait for the next problems which will link Lizzie and Davenport again!

It has been quite a while since I read the first two books in the series but I couldn’t forget a character like Lizzie Hardwicke. Lizzie is a strong character but she has her vulnerabilities. She works in a brothel but also does unpaid work for a magistrate. Lizzie also works with a detective, Will Davenport. They have an attraction but her work in the brothel is a hindrance to taking things further. Lizzie has a clever and inquisitive mind and when confronted with a mystery, often works out what has happened. There is a murder mystery to solve and Lizzie finds herself in a dangerous situation. This was an engaging read and the darker side of life is told. I look forward for the next in the series. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

4.5/5!

Georgina Clarke has done it again with this brilliantly atmospheric, razor-sharp sequel. Viper in the Nest plunges us back into the grimy underbelly of 18th century London, where scandals fester and danger coils beneath every polite smile.

The pacing is impeccable – tense, twisty, and dripping with dread in all the best ways. Lizzie Hardwicke continues to be an absolute force: clever, morally complex, and refreshingly unladylike. I love how Clarke gives her so much agency and grit without falling into cliché. The mystery itself is tightly plotted, with just enough red herrings and revelations to keep you guessing right up to the end.

What stood out most to me this time was the emotional undercurrent. There’s real heart here – grief, loyalty, the murky cost of survival. Clarke doesn’t shy away from the brutal realities of the time, but she balances it with moments of tenderness and dry humour that make it all the more human.

Can’t wait to see where Lizzie goes next.
