For nearly ten thousand years, the time travelers of the Marked Covenant have searched for the one prophesied to restore balance to mankind.
Lola Scott was chosen as their savior.
They chose wrong.
332 B.C. Lola Scott was never meant to join the Marked Covenant, an underground time-traveling society bound to protect mankind. She knows her team would love to replace her. When she’s tasked with a mission to find the mythical Book of Ra, a legendary object with knowledge that could catastrophically alter history, Lola is determined to prove herself worthy. She goes undercover into the political web of Alexander the Great’s court in newly conquered Egypt, only to find her former flame one step ahead. Lola allowed his promises of love and power to sway her once—in a different century, in a different life. She will not make that same mistake again.
A.D. 800. Mallaidh is the disfavored daughter of one of the most powerful clan kings in Ireland. She has resigned herself to a monotonous life of spinsterhood until a mysterious warrior from a neighboring tribe entraps her into a bargain she cannot undo. As time passes, their hostile partnership gives way to something more. Mallaidh must decide if she should abandon her people and the only life she has ever known or say goodbye forever to a future she never thought she could have.
Now, as her past and present identities converge, Lola must confront the truth of who she really is. She may not be the savior prophesied to bring peace to mankind’s future, but she will do whatever it takes to prevent its destruction.
Lola Scott and the Curse of Ra is book one in a steamy enemies-to-lovers historical romantasy series. This book contains explicit content, violence, and profanity. Recommended for mature readers only.

Rating: 4.5 stars (rounded up to 5) Spice: 2-3 🌶️🌶️🌶️
WOW! What a read. Oh my gosh, I loved this book! When it was promoted as a bit of a Doctor Who meets The Mummy concept, I was intrigued about how it would work. It works. It’s brilliant. I loved it and this is a pretty good description of the book’s concept too.
I loved that the book was told from a couple of perspectives AND time spans. We get to see character’s backgrounds which compliment the main story arc happening elsewhere making them a far rounder and more 3 dimensional beings.
The action, tension and all round mystery throughout the book was gripping. I devoured this in less than a week, even whilst finishing off a different book I had started.
The sheer amount of research DJ Birch has done to make this book as good as it is, is phenomenal. The introduction of major historical figures, events, myths and gods, you name it, they were present (importantly, not just Eurocentric either). And the author didn’t do this half heartedly, you can tell this was a genuine passion project and justice was absolutely done to the stories, the historian in me was singing praises as I read this.
Ptolemy had my heart by the end, Mallaidh’s story was a serious highlight of the whole novel and Charley / Lola Scott underwent some great character developments.
I really hope there’s a book 2 because I’ll be first in line for it. Either way, I’ll be buying a physical copy of this having read it in ebook format to reread soon
I don’t normally round my ratings up but I have for this one. I think the concept of the book was just fun enough that it edged closer to 5 stars than 4
Thank you to the author for letting me read this as an ARC, it was brilliant and one of my favourite reads of 2025 so far
Got this as an ARC read and i was blown away. I haven’t had a book that is a cross of indiana jones, lost, and moonstruck. Least to say I was hooked. With a quick pace, wit, and strong writing, i stayed flipping the pages until it was devoured. The best way to describe e this book is the adult Magic Tree House with added romance. Couldn’t recommend this more to any adventure or romance reader. I cannot wait until the next book in the series drops.
I loved the concept of this story, using the Zodiac signs within a secret society. It was perfect mix of Indiana Jones meets the Kingsman with a hint of magic and time travel.
I enjoyed Mallaidh's story and loved getting a glimpse of who she was as a person before she became a Marked One. The pain and heartache that she experienced with her family and how she turned that into strength that she needed was impressive. Seeing her interactions with Tristan and the early stages of their relationships was so sweet.
Loved seeing how easily Lola slipped into a character that she needed to be for a mission. You could tell that she would do anything to make a mission succeed.
I enjoyed getting a POV from Charley and seeing Lola open up to someone new, as she has been treated as an outcast for the majority of her life. And seeing their friendship bloom.
After finishing this book, I just want to dig deeper into Lola's and Tristan's past. Uncover all their secrets.
I had the opportunity to read this book as and ARC and it quickly became one of my favorite reads of the year and I hope I can convince every single one of you to read it!
This story combined so many of my favorite things and if you’re a fan of The Mummy, The Librarian, Doctor Who, Tomb Raider, you’re going to love the vibes in this book!
I know I have the tropes written in the post, but this really is just such a fun adventure/ historical romantasy to get lost in! The dual timelines had me itching to just keep reading because I needed to know what was going to happen in both the past and the present. The time travel and magic system is so intriguing and there’s still so much we don’t know and I can only imagine the endless possibilities of what is to come and what other historical figures we will see.
I don’t want to give anything too big away because I think one of the things that I loved in this story was how it unfolded with the dual timelines. What I will say is I was hooked from the start with our of FMC Lola. She is a badass, take no shit type of woman and is who I imagine Lara Croft/Jessica Rabbit/Selene(Underworld) would be mixed together. I love her and she is basically who I wanted to be growing up! Our MMC Tristan is of course morally grey and definitely has a lot going on, but any man who has a touch her and die mindset is going to make me fold hahah. I can’t wait to find out more about him and get all the juicy details about his and Lola’s past. Finally Charley, who took me by surprise on how much I loved him by the end of this book. I can’t wait to see him grow and want only the best for him. I hope we get more Lola and Charley adventures because these two together were a hoot!
Wow! Wow! Did I mess up my sleep schedule for this book? Yes, and I would do it again! This is how you write a historical fantasy book!
I’ve been following this author as they wrote this book and so it was nice to be able to read it once they finished it. But also sorry to D.J. Birch that I devoured it so quickly. I saw how much effort and time went into this book and if I didn’t know, you can feel it while reading.
To describe this book, I would say that it’s like if you mixed Bryce (Crescent City), Merida and Kim Possible together and is being Indiana Jones, but also in their own way. And with an ex boyfriend who is enemies to lovers to enemies vibe.
Lola Scott belongs to this secret society that time travels to protect the timeline from creatures not from this earth. Each member in this society is linked up to a specific zodiac and has magic to aid them on their missions. Lola is the Scorpio. It is prophesied that the Scorpio will be the most powerful and be the best. But Lola doesn’t feel like that and no one in the society seems like they believe it either. Despite her tragic past and the disdain towards her in the society, she still kicks ass and gets her missions completed.
That is what Charley sees when he comes in to learn and eventually take over for his uncle (who runs the whole thing). Learning is all he thought he would do, that is until he is told he will be accompanying Lola on her mission to Egypt and will be mingling with Alexander the Great. Out of his depth and trying not to die but understand everything is a lot of Charley. On top of that he’s with someone his uncle has a lot of disdain for, but he can see there’s more to Lola than what meets the eye.
He just doesn’t know exactly what kind of world he entered.
It also doesn’t help the mission when they run into an ex member who betrayed the society and is known for being out of control. Then Lola adds that he is her ex.
This book was truly amazing from start to finish! I highly recommend you read it! I loved Lola and how strong and powerful she is. Giving the whole “What? Like it’s hard?” vibe to everything she does and just being so capable. She is just so well written. Most people would have broken after everything she has been through but it just made her stronger. And then her tension with her ex! Dude is literally “touch her and die” with a cocky attitude (thst he can back up). Even Charley, who is new to this whole thing and trying to get a sense of everything (asking questions we want the answers to), is a great character too.
Great plot, great characters, and great writing.
I could go on and on about this book but I hope I did enough to convince you to read it.

Note: This is an ARC review. Thank you to the author herself for giving me the opportunity to read her work!
4.75 ⭐️ (rated up because 😩🙌)
First of all, I commend the author's dedication to research about Egyptian lore and taking note of different milestones in certain eras. I admit that I'm not very knowledgeable in this area, but it only makes it so much more enjoyable to read. The author wrote the book in a way that the readers won't be lost/confused when they encounter words or information about something. So, it was a smooth sailing read for me.
Story wise, I like the uniqueness of the plot! Having different timelines per chapter, and still having that cohesiveness to the entirety of the book adds to the enjoyment. I also love the characters and their personality! Especially Lola, as she was able to overcome soooo many things, both internal and external, and came out stronger. I was seething with rage during her time with the family (Liam, when I catch you, Liam!). She's also smart and doesn't rely much on other people so 👏👏👏👏
I love how I'm left with so much questions for the ending and for the next book! It shows that I truly devoured and enjoyed reading this AND I AM SO EXCITED FOR MORE OF THE AUTHOR'S WORK!! 🥰🫶
*POTENTIAL SPOILER INCOMING*
Honestly, I'm still on team Tristan, although it has been hinted by Charley that he is actually the endgame, even if that last chapter made him so suspicious 😭 But at the same time, his actions felt like it was done out of love for Lola, so can we really blame him?
This was such a breath of fresh air and such a great read!!
The magic system, the secret society, the Egyptian and Irish lore, the tropes, everything really! So different from every Romantasy book I’ve read as of late. That’s not to say I don’t love em all hahaha, but loved how unique this story was.
The combination of different cultures and history combined with the time jumps was so good. There was a lot we were following but so well executed, I never once felt lost but I definitely did get got by plot twists. What more could you want!
Then the romance and tension and spice, I was eating it up! I also just loved all their back stories and I haven’t read too many enemies-lovers-enemies but I will definitely be seeking that out in the futureeee!
If you love The Mummy which I know we all do, or at least would hope so, you should read this!!
Thanks so much to the author for this early review copy!
This was easily the easiest five-star rating I’ve ever given. The novel is truly exceptional, both in its writing and in the way the plot and characters are developed. It’s clear that D.J. Birch put a great deal of thought and research into this story, and the concept itself is brilliant. I went in with high expectations, and this book managed to exceed every one of them. The execution is excellent. I especially enjoyed how the story moves through multiple perspectives and time periods, which added real depth and richness. These shifts made the narrative feel layered and multidimensional. The romance is beautifully written, and at the same time, the plot kept me fully engaged from start to finish. The tension and stakes had me on the edge of my seat, constantly turning pages to see what would happen next. I feel very lucky to have been chosen as an ARC reader for this novel, and I can’t wait for the release of the second book!
I got an eARC from the author but wow. It was so fun to read. And the FMC was different than I’ve read in some other fantasy stories. She’s like an Amazonian woman. The entire time I was reading it, I kept thinking of Tomb Raider (loved the movies and video games) and the Mummy series, exept the main character of Lola is like if Evie and Rick had a baby. It is spicy, not too much but it was a 5 star read for me (not a huge 5 star rater normally). The only thing I don’t love about this book is the cover because I don’t think it conveys the wild ride this is. But obviously the cover doesn’t take anything away from what an incredible story this is. I’m definitely buying a physical copy. If you like history and adventure in your romantasy books, it comes out September 25th! I can’t wait for the next one.
All the elements of a good fantasy with unique twists that make it feel fresh.
We all know that in a romantasy the love interests are always intertwined, and will always make their way back to each other… right?? That’s not so clear between Lola and Tristan’s story and I LOVED that - it added an element of mystery, and the fact that they are actually exes rather than strangers makes it all the more interesting.
You get to understand the origin of their story through flashbacks that have you connecting the dots slowly as the book progresses, which is something else I thought was well done. Rather than being given all the answers, or a love story that starts right away, you’re left piecing it out and wanting more by the end. MUCH more.
The elements of Egyptian mythology were so cool, not to mention the animation some of the greatest historical figures that are weaved in with Lola’s quests.
Can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book!!!
I got my hands on an early copy of this book, and all I can say is, "Wow." That's it. Just... wow. I was promised fantasy heroines, and I got... well, let's just say they weren't like Lola. This woman is a total Amazonian queen, a force of nature. I'm pretty sure she could punch a hole through a brick wall and then immediately solve a historical riddle. The entire time I was reading, my brain kept screaming, "It's Tomb Raider! No, wait, it's The Mummy!" Honestly, the main character Lola is like if Evie and Rick from The Mummy had a baby, and that baby was raised on a steady diet of sarcasm, adventure, and archaeological digs. The romance was just the right amount of spicy—like a good taco, you know? A little heat, but not so much it ruins the whole thing. It was so good, I had to give it five stars! The only thing I don't LOVE about this book is the cover. Seriously, it's like a quiet little library whisper when the book itself is a full-on rock concert. It’s a disservice to the wild, epic adventure inside. But don't let that fool you. I'm buying a physical copy the minute this thing drops, just to give it the shelf space it deserves. If you like your romance with a side of history and a whole lot of "OH MY GOD WHAT'S HAPPENING NEXT?!," then mark your calendars for September 25th.
D.J. Birch succeeds in transporting us to the ancient Egipt where our Main Characters live many adventures and, at the same time, try very hard not to interfere too much with the events that have to take place in order to maintain history. Lola, our FMC, is a scarred yet strong woman that fends for hersf. Charley is the heartwarming character that feels like a cup of hot chocolate in winter and iced tea in summer. Tristan, our MMC, is ahdjabdjsbsjfjsjsbbdb *licks phone*, but it still remains a mistery to me.
An adventure packed novel with so much effort, time and research put into it, and so well written, that I can only bow to the author. Can’t wait for the next one!!!
“I can handle it. My monsters will dance with your demons.”
This book!!! I loved it so much! The characters are amazing. The story vibes like Doctor Who, and the adventure of it would be in good company with The Mummy (1999) and Indiana Jones. This is a franchise I would love to see on the big screen. Lola is such a strong female character that doesn’t let the past define her. I loved how two timelines were weaved together to tell the story. I definitely want to read the next book.
Summary: I’m a sucker for history and especially Ancient Egypt, but throw in Time Travel? SIGN ME UP! No notes!
This uniquely told story of historical fantasy is the perfect blend of Egyptian mythology and fantastic character building. I was in love with the characters and world arround them from the very beginning. This book is perfect for those of you like myself loved The Mummy (1999) and are looking for an epic adventure. I will be reading what ever D.J. Birch comes out with next.
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
Rating: 4/5 ⭐️ Spice: 2/5 🌶️
Historical fiction mixed with romantic fantasy. Yes please! This books combines multiple timelines with multiple character POV to create a fantastic story.
The story starts in present day United Kingdom where we are introduced to The Marked Ones. They are the protectors of humankind and help keep the balance over time. Lola, our female main character, a spunky redhead who was plucked from 800 AD Ireland because she was suspected to be the "Scorpio," the one prophesized as the ultimate savior of mankind. Charley is the "Librarian" in training who will be expected to take over for his Uncle Will. In this role, he is responsible for sending the Marked Ones on missions to correct any imbalances in the past that could effect the future. Charley's uncle sends him on a mission with Lola to 300 BC Egypt to recover the mysterious "Book of Ra," a powerful relic. They believe Alexander the Great or someone in his court is trying to steal this which could alter the future as we know it. As Lola and Charley infiltrate themselves in Alexander's court, Lola is blindsided by the presence of her ex, Tristan, who appears to be on the same mission to find the book. Through multiple timelines, we learn of Lola and Tristan's past and present. They are introduced as enemies, becomes lovers and then enemies once again.
I loved the history woven into this story with Alexander and his Somatophylakes (royal bodyguards). It was clear the author did her research. The flashbacks to Lola as Mallaidh in Ireland and learning her backstory was key to understanding why she is such a little bad a**. And Tristen...I'm a sucker for a man who asks, "who did this to you?" I need to know what happens in the rest of their story so I cannot wait for the next book!
You will enjoy this book if you like: -historical fiction woven into fantasy and romance -time travel -missions & quests -spunky, bad a** FMC -forced proximity -multiple timelines -multiple POV
Thank you so much to the author for allowing me to read this ahead of publication.
*Small & Silly description* Lola runs into her annoying but really hot ex Tristan, who also happened to have travelled back in time to ancient Egypt, the coincidence! What else is there to do but make him insanely jealous with the other hottie in town, Alexander The Great, as you do. If you were one of those with a crush on BOTH Brendan Fraser AND Rachel Weisz in the Mummy, then this one if for you.
*Worldbuilding* DJ Birch is incredibly in setting the stage of both ancient Egypt and middled aged Ireland and contemporary London. She weaves three timelines together seamlessly. I found myself more leaning towards the origin story of Mallaidh, even though going on an adventure in ancient Egyptian tombs was also really exciting.
*Characters* It was so good to have that origin story of Lola, because otherwise you might not like her very much in the now. It all starts to come together across the book, and you really get why some characters are the way they are, which makes it all the more fun and interesting to read.
*Pace & writing* It was definitely fast-paced, even though it has lots of time jumps and changes perspective often. I liked to see different scenes from multiple POV's, because it always keeps you on your toes as a reader.
*Overall* It was very exciting, reminded me of The Mummy and National Treasure which I LOVED growing up, and I would love to ARC read again for DJ Birch!!
I absolutely love the vibes in this book. And I can’t wait to see more Lola and more Charley. I love the world building and the lore of this story and I’m very excited to see what else this author writes in this universe. I love the use of the different mythology as well as the premise of the zodiacs and a secret society around them. I also really enjoyed the flashbacks between Lola and Tristan and their relationship. I’m glad we got to see who Lola was before she took on that name and I’m very intrigued to find out more about Tristan and his name. I would love to see more of him as well in the other books.

This was a very enjoyable and fun read. It was a fast paced adventure that had me engaged from the beginning to the end. It was unique and creative in a refreshing way and written very well. I always love when books have multiple timelines, this one past and present with time travel. I haven’t read one that I don’t like, and it takes a very talented writer to execute it, and this one does not disappoint. I also always love multiple POV because I believe it brings so much more depth to the story. This book had me at Egyptian mythology and I loved all the vibes this book has to offer. It gave me The Mummy x Indiana Jones x The Jungle Cruise x Jumanji vibes. The world building is immersive, the magic system is unique and interesting, and the plot is just so creative and neat. I loved the layers of the story and how it all came together at the end. The characters and their parts are written perfectly. I thought everything was going to go one way and it went another way I wasn’t expecting, and it was way better than what I was expecting. After the ending, I’m very excited to see what happens next. I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to the author for an advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
This book exceeded expectations but miles. When I started reading this I thought that it was going to be a fun easy fantasy read, but the thought that was put into every aspect of this book was amazing. Was I confused 90% of the time? Absolutely yes, but in the end despite still being confused I loved how the story unraveled. Lola deserves so much love and happiness in her life and has been betrayed and taken advantage of and still finds a way to be a badass. Tristan oh sweet Tristan, I don’t have many words but…why? Charley is such as sweet and innocent soul and I can’t wait to see his growth and if he will be just as despicable as his uncle. Another thing that I was absolutely feral for in this book was the tension between Lola and Ptolemy. I would highly recommend if you enjoy slow burn fantasies with intricate plots. I love ever second of this read and I am frothing at the mouth for book 2 because I am addicted.
This was such a fun adventure. I really enjoyed the time travel element mixed with the defenders of the timeline plot.
Lola and Charley were definitely an unlikely pair but managed to pull off their chemistry quite well given the circumstances. I loved the inclusion of Tristan to shake things up and keep it interesting.
The flashbacks were my favourite scenes out of the entire thing. It definitely made me consider Tristan in a different light after him being introduced as the villain.
I wish there was less emphasis on the seduction tactic. It felt overdone and annoying by the end of it. I think there could definitely have been other ways to get around that in the story considering how much of a badass Lola is.
Overall it was a great read which intrigued my love for Indiana Jones.
Thank you to the author for the arc of this book. This is my honest opinion.
(Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this as an ARC)
FANTASTIC! I NEED ANOTHER ONE RIGHT NOW!
This concept was so unique and refreshing. A time travelling warrior going on an espionage mission through history? 11/10
I giggled, I got emotional - it was great.
Lola was a fantastic FMC and Charley was a brilliant sidekick. Their chemistry was great, watching their friendship blossom was a real highlight! (I feel like a lot of similar books coming out at the moment put platonic relationships on the back burner for the love interest, so it was really refreshing to see.)
Also, I’m a massive history fan so watching these characters like Alexander the Great, Ptolemy, Galvarino and Cleopatra be brought to life in a fantasy setting was a lot of fun.
Overall, I cannot recommend this enough and it’s fair to say that Lola, Tristan, Charley have worked their way into my heart <3
If you enjoyed watching any of the following movies or TV shows: Tomb Raider, The Mummy, Indiana Jones, National Treasure, Dr. Who, Outlander.... you will likely enjoy this book.
I (Like many millenials) had a very fascinating interest in Ancient Egypt as a kid and truly thought it would be more relevant in my everyday life. Currently been searching for books with mentions of Egypt; Lola Scott and the Curse of Ra, swooped in and helped fill that void.
Its a historical fiction fantasy. It has time travel, multiple POVs, Ancient Egypt, Magic- which I hope we get more of in the future because it is so fascinating. We get some history between the characters that is delicious and we gobble it up- but also it was half the cookie with some crumbs leading us to the next book.....
TIP: Do not read the little blurb summary or “back of the book”; I went in blind and loved discovering what was going on as the characters found out!
PROS: - historical, romance / fantasy - multiple timelines - LOTS of character growth - Sassy bad-ass FMC - Dual POV - The reader is unsure who the MMC is, which I liked, because it kept me reading.
CONS: - Slow start: Took me about halfway thru to REALLY enjoy what I was reading, so you have to be patient. - The ending had a great twist, but flopped a bit & then felt rushed then felt a bit rushed. I left a bit confused. - IMO, needed more SPICE & more of our MMC. By the time I realized who he was, the book was over.
All together, good read, & looking forward to why happens with Lola next!
Really enjoyed this book, it pulled together a lot of my favorite things (including the minor obsession with Ancient Egypt I've had since I was a kid). The author definitely put in the work on this book to make sure everything was accurate, even though it's a work of fiction - which I absolutely admire here. The book itself was an adventure to read and kept me turning the pages until there were none left to turn. Definitely keeping an eye on this author to see what she writes next because this book was amazing.
If you are looking for your next historical fantasy, check out @authordjbirch’s newest release, Lola Scott and the Curse of Ra. This new series weaves together stories of Ancient Egypt and Medieval Ireland, telling the story of Lola, her past life, her ever present ex-love, and her role as an unchosen one.
DJ Birch packs a lot into this first installment, as our time traveling duo (Lola and her sidekick, Charley) go on the hunt for the Book of Ra. She keeps the action and adventure moving throughout as she jumps through shifting timelines and allegiances.
Perfect for the adults who were obsessed with ancient Egypt as a kid!
Lola & Tristan’s relationship dynamic had me hooked & having the mythology tied in to the story was just *chefs kiss* amazing!! This had the feeling of Indiana Jones meets Lost in this crazy whirlwind of adventure and secrets, which was a lot of fun. Definitely recommend!!
I have to be honest, given the book's length (which is absolutely not a criticism but just a fact) and the limited time I have due to work and life, unfortunately, I haven't managed to finish the entire book in time for its release. However, I still wanted to write down some of my thoughts on the story so far, as I've been really engrossed (I'm about 200 pages in). The story's protagonist is Lola, a fearless warrior member of a covenant, ready to travel to Egypt during the reign of Alexander the Great. Her main mission is to recover the Book of Ra, an ancient and powerful document that, if in the wrong hands, could wreak havoc on the entire world, as it contains the knowledge to alter history forever. Lola will be accompanied on this journey by several faithful companions, including Charley, who is next in line to become the next person tasked with protecting humanity and the space-time continuum. During their journey they will also meet Tristan, ex member of the covenant and Lola’s ex lover, with his own agenda regarding the Book of Ra. First of all, for me, what pushed me to apply for the ARC of this book is definitely the theme of time travel and mythology, as they are topics that have always fascinated me; time travel because it is something unknown, worthy only of the masterpiece movie Interstellar, as for mythology, it's something so far removed from our time that it intrigues me. Even though I haven't finished the story yet, I still want to recommend this book to all history and fantasy enthusiasts and anyone who wants to immerse themselves in a world of divinity, politics, passion, relationships, and betrayal, all of this mixed with a little magic. Finally, as always, I'd like to thank the author for this fantastic story and I can't wait to read more of her works in the future.
