Deandra’s grandparents, January and Morris Eyre, are hosting a fundraising auction at the Mermaids Club. While they’re no strangers to auctions, they’ve never hosted one with a guest list this moneyed or with items this rare. The revenue from the event is sure to pull in a nice chunk of change for the much-needed renovations of the local library—but the lure of the self-igniting phoenix feather is also pulling in unscrupulous individuals.
A multimillionaire in the talisman industry—and the owner of a company with a shady past—has his sights set on the feather. When his invitation to the high-profile event is rescinded, Duncan Bettencourt works to discredit the Eyres by blasting flagrant half-truths across his popular social media page. His cornerstone claim is that the small philanthropic club doesn’t have the resources necessary to pull off such an event.
When the phoenix feather goes missing, Bettencourt jumps at the chance to scream “I told you so!” from virtual rooftops. With renewed purpose, Bettencourt uses his online clout, gobs of money, and pure spite to relentlessly torment the Eyres. Deandra and Wendy must once again don their sleuthing caps, this time to help their grandparents track down a thief.
Because the missing feather isn’t only rare, it’s potentially dangerous. Under the right conditions, the self-igniting feather could be crafted into a bomb. The cousins must locate the feather before it falls into the wrong hands—not just for their grandparents’ sake, but for Axia’s.

I really enjoyed the first two books in this series and jumped on the chance to read the third book as well. I started it shortly after I received it and had a great time reading about Deandra's adventures in Axia again. This time she is pet sitting for a flying pony, which was a lot of fun to read about. And there is another mystery, this time in the form of a phoenix feather that gets stolen from the club her grandparents are part of.
The mystery is a bit slow to start, but I thought that worked well here. There is some introduction about the Mermaid's Club Deandra's grandparents are part of and the auction they are running that the feather is part of. There are plenty of fun pet sitting scenes as Deandra now is taking care of a flying horse and all the struggles that come with that. I always like seeing how Deandra handles the pet sitting and it's fun reading about the mythical pets and creatures she takes care of. There's also more of her own pet dragon havoc, which was fun as he's beginning to fly, but as he's disguised as a dire wolf he can't actually fly outside of the apartment. So Deandra has to figure out how to handle that.
As the book progresses the plot about the feather becomes more important as it gets stolen. I thought it was interesting that there is a theft instead of a murder to solve in this book. It switched things up a bit, but still made for an engaging mystery. There are plenty of people who have their eye on the phoenix feather and I enjoyed seeing the mystery play out. It kept me guessing and the reveal was a good one. I liked seeing it all play out and I liked how it made sense and I could see some of the hints to this person when looking back.
I really like reading about Deandra, her cousin Wendy, her pet dragon Havoc and her love interest Cruz as well as the town of Axia and some of the other fun side characters and pets she meets. There's a fun set up for the next pet sitting job for next book. And I liked reading more about Deandra and how she's doing with her pet sitting as well as her romance with Cruz. I really like Deandra and Cruz together. In this book they don't see each other often as Cruz is out of town for work, but they still call and the end has some great scenes involving the two of them. I like their banter and their connection and they are just so sweet and fun together.
To summarize: I really like this series and this third book was another great read. I liked following Deandra as she gets caught up in another mystery, a theft instead of a murder this time. I liked how this switched things up and still had an engaging mystery that kept me guessing. I liked the reveal of who had stolen the feather and why and how it made sense and there were some hints to this person. I really like Deandra as a main character and enjoy reading about her. I liked the pet sitting scenes, this time involving a flying pony. I also liked seeing more of Havoc, her pet dragon. As well as more of Deandra interacting with her cousins Wendy, her grandparents and other side characters and pets. The romance between Deandra and Cruz is so well done and they are so sweet and fun together and I always enjoy reading their banter. All in all another awesome book and I can't wait for the next one!
This is book three of A Mythical Pet Sitting Mystery and the main character is Deandra (Dee) Hendricks, who has moved to the magical Axia hub, where her grandparents retired to, from the mundane world of Los Angeles, and lives with her cousin Wendy and her baby dragon, Havoc, who appears to everyone else as a dire wolf puppy, due to his special collar. Deandra is kept busy with her gig babysitting a young yeti, Kiwi, the son of the Basnet family who is quite a handful, as well as helping out her grandparents, January and Morris Eyre at the Mermaid Club. She has just received some of her new business cards for her pet sitting business, done by InkCraft, whose ink is magical in nature and really makes the cards pop. Her grandparents have a busy weekend coming up, with a thank you dinner for all those who had helped to fund recent updates to Axia’s high school, and then an auction of magical items, mostly donated by a recently deceased former Mermaid called Pierson, in his will and who had an extensive collection. He specified that his most prized possession, a phoenix feather, be auctioned off in the small hub of Axia that had been his home. The auction will help replace all the children’s books that were recently destroyed in a magical accident. The phoenix feather is captivating, constantly reigniting, possibly with its full power intact. It could be a powerful weapon in the wrong hands and her grandparents have been left with the final say so on who can attend the auction, from a very long list sent to them by Pierson’s lawyer. It arrives a few days before it should have and so they have to secure it in their flame funnel safe. A flame funnel is an element cell where aging Mermaids can ride out any glitches in their magic, like the nightmare that caused the elderly Nyad to throw his magic about, freezing the library’s water pipes and causing the flooding. Her grandparents are both wind magicals and so use a wind tunnel when they have too much to drink or can’t control their magic!
Pierson’s daughter Jocelyn is the one who will inherit the collection and the funds of any auctions, unless going to charity or a good cause, like with the phoenix feather, and she is a difficult person for the Eyre’s to handle! Her grandpa asks Dee’s advice on rejecting a private collector, Duncan Bettencourt, who is quite a troublesome man, who likes to use his social media presence to go after people he doesn’t like and he also has a link to businesses with questionable ethics in obtaining and experimenting with magical items! Deandra’s boyfriend Dr Cruz Caddel is away on business as an on-call surgeon for shifters, doing surgeries and helping others, since he possesses “zoolingual” abilities, allowing magical animals to converse with him, mostly through vague images. Dee and Cruz communicate whilst he is away by text and these are sometimes rather amusing. Bettencourt and Pierson were enemies and Bettencourt is a mundane sorcerer, who couldn’t pass any of the academy’s exams, however hard he tried, and has made a business out of creating potions and the use of talismans, to help the mundane experience magic. Wendy has a particularly bad experience of being one of his beta testers some years ago and was left temporarily blind! He ties people up in NDA contracts and soul contracts, so no one can discuss anything his company produces, especially if it goes wrong! Dee gets another babysitting job, from an incubus called Mr Hornsby, who Cruz had warned her might call, to ask her to look after his daughter Sierra’s flying horse (Pegasus), Starshadow. She is to take Starshadow to the Weatherstone Flight Park in Axia, for exercise every day and someone else is taking care of the Hornsby’s home whilst they are all away. She got embarrassed after making a bit of a fool of herself, when Mr Hornsby forgot to put on his magic suppression rings and she flirted with him!
Starshadow is somewhat stubborn at following commands and also has the ability to make themselves invisible, so trying to get a lead on them is even harder than she expected. Starshadow is intelligent according to Cruz, but Mr Hornsby in particular, has a hard time getting her to obey him or come when called. She also ends being asked to take another flying horse, Voidbringer, with her to the Flight Park, keeping her busy especially when she is supposed to be helping her grandparents with their events. Bettencourt manages to gatecrash the weekend, insisting on his specialised expert authenticating the phoenix feather, making accusations that her grandparents either didn’t even have it, or had sold it off to profit themselves. Eventually the sheriff and her team of werecats are called in to ban him from the Mermaid Club. The auction seems to go well, but Deandra finds a few things seem odd, about how some people are acting, staff and customers. Morty gets drunk and ends up being put in the flame funnel to sleep it off after the auction and the feather is placed in the safe within the flame funnel with him. The feather sold at the auction, but the bidder only paid half after the event and the next morning someone from an avian council would arrive with funds to pay the remainder. Granny Janny rings Deandra the next morning with the shocking news that the phoenix flame has disappeared from the safe, as has Morty, leaving behind his phone and keys. The building was still locked and they have no idea how both have disappeared without any sign. Deandra, with Wendy’s help, is determined to find out what happened and who was responsible. There are plenty of possible suspects who were at the auction and the Mermaid Club that day preparing for the auction. Her grandparents are stressed about it all, especially when Bettencourt stokes up his televised attack on them and Deandra wants to stop him. The only way is to find the feather and who stole it from the club in the first place. Lots of red herrings, as Deandra goes for the most obvious suspects first, ending up asking them questions and putting all the pieces together, to solve the puzzle of the theft.
An amusing investigation method, as Deandra can only work on this when she isn’t busy with pet sitting the flying horses, having a surprising development occur with Havoc, and also missing her boyfriend Cruz and not wanting to stress him whilst he is so busy on important work. Lots of different magical abilities in a town perfect for their kind, but also populated by mundanes, wanting the experience of using magic with potions or talismans. I loved the interactions with Havoc, Starshadow, and Voidbringer, as she manages to build her reputation and her business with magical pets. A rather amusing meeting with another pet in the tattoo shop and his bearded owner, will no doubt bring another job for her, as well as a few shocks! I look forward to reading more of this series an seeing what adventures the cousins and Havoc will go on and what crime they may have to solve next. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout, and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
The Mermaids Club, a philanthropic organization in Axia is hosting an auction to raise money for the children’s library. With their grandparents running the event, Dee & Wendy are roped in to help. Among the items is a rare self-igniting phoenix feather, highly sought after and valuable as well as dangerous in the wrong hands. An unscrupulous and highly unethical talisman creator and influencer who would do anything to acquire it starts a campaign against Dee’s grandparents when he’s denied access to the auction. Things get worse when the feather is stolen after the auction. Can Dee track it down before her grandparents’ reputations are destroyed? Meanwhile Dee has a few other headaches to deal with. Her new pet client is a spoiled and stubborn flying horse, Starshadow. The owner, Mr. Hornsby, an incubus, has Dee off kilter whenever they interact. And Havoc, her dragon glamoured to look like a dire wolf, has started flying. With vet Cruz out of town, Dee is at a loss of how to handle it.
The third book in Melissa Erin Jackson’s Mythical Pet Sitting series is as delightful and charming as the first two. If you’ve missed them, this one can stand on its own as well. Dee’s uncanny ability to connect with difficult creatures comes in handy with her new charge. Starshadow is sassy and silly with a number of quirks that test Dee’s patience. Dee also gets introduced to her client that will be featured in book 4, a talking, sapient weasel-like animal named Peril. There are so many laugh out loud scenes throughout the book that balance the seriousness of the mystery. Even though Cruz is away for most of the book, his and Dee’s relationship continues to deepen with them even sharing a kiss at the end. Havoc has a warning for the good doctor if he hurts Dee. Looking forward to more adventures for Dee.

This is the third book in the series and it's just as good as the first. Deandra's pet sitting business is growing after her success with the baby yeti, Kiwi. Plus she's still raising her baby dragon, Havoc. Now she has a new referral from Dr. Caddell for Starshadow, a priceless flying thoroughbred that has some tricks up her sleeve. She'll need her cousin Wendy's help more than ever with Cruz out of town and a full roster of old and new pet sitting clients. Plus Grandpa Morris and Grandma January need their help with the Mermaids Club Auction that includes a rare phoenix feather that has arrived three days early. When the feather gets stolen Deandra needs to help find the feather to save her grandparents reputation. We meet all kinds of new characters and pets while we join the adventure to find the feather and keep Starshadow from escaping. The ride is just pure fun as the story twists and turns. Each time we think we found the thief, we find another clue instead. It's an entertaining, lighthearted and wholly satisfying story that sweeps you up into the magical world of Axia.

What a cast of characters! They all had me emoting for different reasons. From our way too sassy Ms. Starshadow to snooty Mr. Hornsby; and everyone in between. I get something/someone new with the town each book. One in particular? His name is Peril. That's just gonna be sooooo much fun! How this keeps happening to her is half the fun.
I really liked that the rest of Dee's family was in on the action this time. I loved seeing them all interact with each other.
The case itself was a good one that was nicely fleshed out. The pacing and dialogue flowed well and it really kept me guessing until the end.
I enjoyed this.

Another excellent mythical mystery. Reading the books in order is best since situations and characters are mentioned from the previous books, but you can read each book alone.
January and Morris are in charge of the auction where a rare phoenix father is up for sale. When the feather goes missing after the auction, Dee tries to find the thief.
I couldn't figure out the who or why until the Melissa Erin Jackson let us know. She brings you into the story, and holds your attention until the end.

This series is fantastic. I can't get enough of this story. There is always something going on, some grand type of animal involved and then there's the mystery that Deandra and Wendy have to solve to help their grandparents. Never a dull moment, fighting lies on social media platforms to pet sitting wild animals, working on the mystery and trying to basically save the world from a feather that could be a massive bomb! Wild. I love it.

I just love this series, the characters, and the universe it’s set in. Deandra’s such a fun character, and I love how her pet sitting gig also gets a huge part of the plot. We learn about all the types of paranormal beings that live here. Anyway, in this latest, Deandra’s grandparents are auctioning a phoenix feather, and of course chaos and murder are on the menu. I loved how everything came together at the end, and we get a glimpse of what’s next for Deandra and all the other fun characters. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
If there is a problem, Deandra is your go-to gal. She is able to step in, step up and tackle the stickiest of sticky situations. Between training her dragon and helping her grandparents with a special auction, she also manages to pet sit difficult creatures and (barely) has time for a boyfriend. When the phoenix feather goes missing along with the security guard, Deandra is on the case. There are a lot of twists, turns and heart in this cozy. It can be read as a standalone.
I love this series and this was such a great read! There’s a lot of cozy and magical mayhem, and oh yes, a mystery! Well written in a way that made me keep on turning those pages. A fun read that I would recommend to anyone who love their cozy mysteries with lots of magic, twists and turns and allll the feels!

The writing isn’t great, but it fits the style of this series. It’s light and could have been a pleasant read, if only it didn’t feel like more of the same. The narrative and story development are almost identical to book 1 and book 2. It’s not even a solid whodunnit, since like the first two books, it ends with a deus ex machina that needs an entire chapter of explanations. Overall, a disappointing read.
What a wonderful entertaining and cozy paranormal read. I love this series. It's got likeable characters, a nice writing style and storyline, a touch of humor and it keeps you guessing until the end. What more do you want. I'm already looking forward to the next book. I received an advance review copy via Booksprout and I'm leaving a voluntary and honest review.
I just love flying ponies! I could stay in this magical world all day long. Deandra is trying to solve the case of the missing Phoenix Feather; a feather that incinerates itself every few minutes - as well as everything around it - unless it's in a protected environment. Brilliant story telling!.

The Mermaids Club is hosting a auction, but what will happen when a feather goes missing? Can Deandra and Wendy find the feather before her grandparents reputation is ruined? Then she has other responsibilities to take care of too.

This is the third book of the series and it's best to have read the other two books first for better context. I enjoyed this one too and I loved the mystery element and all the adorable mythological pets.

Omg this is so amazing I am definitely going to go read the first 2 books now each character was just awesome. Deandra is so cool and I cant wait to get the fourth book to read.
An auction that has an item that causes a lot of secrecy and people to act like they would not normally act leads Deandra trying to get to the root of it all. Enjoyed that it kept me guessing.
