This book was gifted to me from Hayling Bookstorm in exchange for my honest opinion
This story is set in the late 1940s jazz club era, it is labeled as romance /thriller but I feel it’s a bit historical fiction as well
Jan is a farm girl from Montana who meets and falls in love with Lavio, she doesn’t find out what he actually does for a living till after they marry….
Now she is a wife behind the American crime family

I enjoyed this book and have many thoughts about jt.

This is essentially a mob love story and the main characters were named after the author’s great-grandparents. I found this detail a little odd because of the crime involved in the book and it’s kind of sexy with no actual spice.

The love story was very sweet and I enjoyed it. The underlying plot was interesting and kept the story moving quickly. I enjoyed it enough that I read it in two days!

I will say that I think the characters lacked a little bit of depth. The wife, Jan, kind of went along with everything and was too okay with all the mob activity immediately. Then, the striking events toward the end seem a little sudden and out of character for those involved.

Thank you to the author for sharing her work with me!

This debut is packed with messy characters that have you rooting for them on page one!

The way Sears made us an actual part of this family is beyond me.

Set in Billings, MT, decades ago, the story follows Jan, wife to a mob boss, friend, protector, and mother. She wears so many hats, including the ones she didn’t know she would wear.

We get to see this family as they navigate hardships along with the simple, everyday life experiences that make them highly relatable. Minus the murders 😆

If you’re looking for a character-driven story with real-life elements and a precious forever love story that can withstand anything, this is the book for you!

The story starts when Jan’s granddaughter is planning her seating arrangements, and Jan has strict opinions that have to be followed. Then, she starts to remember what led her to this point. Many years ago, she met Lavio, and he knew he wanted her from the beginning. Jan felt the same way, and the two start their life together. Through their journey, the readers are introduced to the family, and Lavio’s role within it. The story starts to focus on what they went through. It was nice when the guys started to include her after her initiative; Jan found her place in the family, and she and Lavio thrived.

LOVE IT

The Left Hand by Brittnay J. Sears is a gripping mix of romance, suspense, and 1950s mob drama. Jan’s transformation from small-town farm girl to a cunning force in the criminal underworld is both believable and compelling, and the smoky jazz club atmosphere pulls you right in. While the pacing slows in a few spots, the emotional depth and rich historical detail make it a standout debut. A solid, engaging read for fans of historical crime fiction with heart.

Jan and Lavio’s love story is nothing short of captivating. This book delves deep into the power of love, sacrifice, and the lengths we’re willing to go to protect our loved ones. The emotional depth of the characters and the intensity of their bond pulls the reader in, making it impossible to put the book down. I found myself hooked from the very first page, unable to stop reading, and finishing the entire story in one sitting.

The central theme of doing whatever it takes to keep your family safe is both exciting and incredibly relatable. It speaks to the universal instinct to protect those we love, no matter the cost. The author skillfully builds the tension and excitement, balancing the characters’ emotional journeys with action and suspense. You can feel the weight of the stakes they face, and their love story feels timeless—one for the ages.

What really struck me was how vividly the author’s vision came through. It’s clear that the emotional and thematic elements were carefully crafted to resonate with readers. The pacing is perfect, keeping you on the edge of your seat while allowing for tender, intimate moments that showcase the deep connection between Jan and Lavio.

If you’re looking for a story that is both thrilling and emotionally charged, this is one to pick up. It’s a reminder of the lengths we’ll go to protect those we love and the strength of love itself. A truly memorable read.

The Left Hand by Brittnay J Sears

Thank you @haylingbookstormltd for the gifted copy!

Unfortunately this did not work for me. The premise sounded good, but I expected more. Mob wife, jazz club era, crime family, murder, and based on real people! I'm intrigued! But then it fizzled out.

Jan grew up on a farm in rural Montana. When she starts college in the late 1940s, she meets the handsome and charming Lavio Rossano at a party and he sweeps her off her feet. Soon Jan learns that Lavio's work is not what she thought and is actually involved in the mob. He moves up the ranks, but when things become dangerous, Jan realizes they need more help behind the scenes.
My main issue with this book is that it took SO LONG for anything real to happen. Most of it was Jan and Lavio's relationship, and bonding with the crime family. Finally, at around 55-60%, something starts to happen and the risk and action amps up. Then the rest happens so quickly that there was no real build up of suspense during the first half to make the payoff worthwhile. I also found it odd that Jan immediately accepted Lavio's criminality without question. There should have been a slow acceptance, bit by bit, rather than instant support. Then, the end was predictable. At least it was a quick read!

Also, the author states that the main character names were from her great grandparents, and lists who each character was inspired by from her family. Was this her actual family? Were they in the mob? Seems like an odd choice.

Unfortunately a dud for me, but this will appeal to readers who enjoy more character driven stories focusing on relationships and family, and who are not easily squeamish.

CW: typical mobster behavior, DV, violence, blood, injuries, torture, etc.

✨ The Left Hand by Brittnay J. Sears
🎧 Format: Audiobook (narrated by Paige Reisenfeld)
🕰️ Genre: Romantic Period Crime Thriller | 1950s Setting

Step into smoky dance clubs, cozy kitchens, and the shadowy corners of a crime family's inner circle with The Left Hand. Told from Jan Hendricks’ perspective, this story is as much about love and loyalty as it is about the darker sides of ambition and power.

Jan is a smart, strong-willed farm girl turned city woman, swept off her feet by the charming and ambitious Lavio Rossano. As Lavio climbs the ranks of a crime syndicate, Jan finds herself doing more than supporting from the sidelines—she becomes The Left Hand behind the man, working in the shadows to protect the family she loves.

💭 What I loved:
-Jan. She’s brilliant, bold, and impossible not to root for.
-The romance. Lavio doesn’t just love Jan—he champions her.
-The lush, immersive atmosphere. I could picture every room, every smoky jazz club, every whispered conversation.
-Paige Reisenfeld’s narration. Her voice is butter—perfectly matched to Jan’s strength, softness, and the 1950s vibe.

🎙️ This audiobook brought the world to life so vividly that I truly didn’t want it to end. If you love character-driven stories with high stakes, rich historical settings, and a love story at the center, this one is for you.

I picked up The Left Hand by Brittnay J. Sears on a drizzly afternoon when I needed something that felt both familiar and a little mysterious—and before I knew it, I was utterly lost in its pages. From the very first sentence, I felt like a hidden guest in an old jazz club, leaning forward as if eavesdropping on whispers in the haze.

Jan Hendricks quickly became someone I wanted to protect. She moves through her world with a quiet confidence—soft-spoken but unshakable. Watching her stand firm in the face of unseen pressures felt so real to me, like meeting a friend I hadn’t known I needed until she showed up.

What struck me most was how Brittnay Sears paints each moment. I could almost hear the muted trumpet in the next room or feel the weight of a glance that spoke volumes. The prose never felt forced; instead, it unfolded gently, rewarding me whenever I paused to savor the small details.

Reading The Left Hand felt like being let in on a beautiful secret. It reminded me that the richest stories often live in the spaces between words—the small, quiet choices that shape who we become. If you crave a book that lingers in your thoughts and leaves you with a soft, insistent echo of loyalty and self-discovery, this one will stay with you long after you close it.

I had the opportunity to read this book as an ARC, and I really enjoyed the experience. From the very beginning, the atmosphere pulled me in. The author creates a setting and tone that feels immersive, which made me want to keep turning the pages. The story itself is well thought out and layered in a way that makes it interesting to follow.

That being said, I did find myself pausing about halfway through, wondering where exactly the story was headed. At times, the main thread felt a little unclear, almost as if I had lost sight of the bigger picture. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how well everything came together in the final chapters. The ending tied up the loose ends and gave me that satisfying “aha” moment that made the journey worthwhile.

What I appreciated most is how this book blends elements from different genres. It doesn’t fit neatly into just one category, which makes it a refreshing read. Because of that, I think it’s the perfect book to pick up when you’re in between moods or not sure what to read next, you get a little bit of everything, and it keeps the experience fresh.

Overall, it’s an engaging, atmospheric, and rewarding story that’s definitely worth a spot on your TBR.

I didn’t know I needed to read this book until I did. I was really transported into the 1950s. The music, the way of life, the Italian mob, family dinners, and the overall setting. I felt like I was seeing everything through the eyes of Jan, to see her rise in the family, and do anything to protect it. Jan was really a strong character and I just loved her and Lavio together. They truly had a beautiful love story and partnership.

And those friendships that turned into family. They went through so much together as a family facing betrayal and heartbreak.

There were some dark moments of course, some graphic scenes weren’t as descriptive as others. I really liked that female rage scene almost at the end so beware.

I truly enjoyed this book and I couldn’t help but get emotional at the end and to know it was based on a true story! The author did a wonderful job describing the life of a crime family in the 50s and how united they were.

Thank you to the author and Hayling Bookstorm for letting me experience this book. This is my honest opinion.

Go back in time to the 1950’s; set in Billings, Montana and follow the lives of women behind the American crime family. There are no limits and Jan will do what she has to in order to protect her own.

If you love reading mob/mafia and romance thrillers, this book is for you! It is medium-to-fast paced and an engaging read. The beginning and ending are fast. But the middle of the book is where the real story is. Huge plot twists that I did not see coming! Wow she’s brave! Did she really just do that? My heart is breaking for Jan! The best friendships are ones that turn into family! — All things I was thinking while reading.

While there was zero spicy scenes, it was a closed door romance — and I absolutely fell in love with Lavio. The way he treated Jan and put her above all else was so romantic. I love that the author used her real life family members as inspiration for this story.

The Left Hand was a good, quick read that kept me wanting more!

Honestly? I have no idea what the hell just happened. This book was insanity from start to finish. And I LOVED it.

I’m not quite sure what I was expecting, but this book delivered much more than I could have ever imagined. Janis and Lavio’s romance to begin with is adorable, and reminded me a lot of my Grandparents - without the murder obviously.
The love and acceptance that Lavio showed Janis was beautiful and has really made me relive the romantic moments I saw between my Gramps and Granny.

I read the book in one sitting, and it took me just over two hours. Once I started, I was absolutely hooked and I couldn’t put it down.
The softness that Lavio had towards Janis was adorable but also hilarious, considering he would beat up anyone that spoke against her.

My heart aches for Giovanna. She was one of my favourite characters.

Overall, this book was a strong 3.5⭐️ for me. I will remember Janis, Lavio and Giovanna’s journey.

When I saw that this was a 1940s/50s, jazz club era, American crime family thriller, I was immediately drawn in! This is such a unique time in history and I haven’t read many books with this setting, so I just had to give it a read. We get tension, mystery, some fade to black spice…as well as a love story to absolutely swoon over!

I really enjoyed the fierce family loyalty in this book. Our main character, Jan, really learns what her limits are when it comes to protecting the ones she loves. And wow…we get quite a big twist that left me shocked!

Sears’ writing style is super fun and engaging. I flew through this one, and I am the first to admit that I am not the speediest reader. It was so fun to feel like you were “part of the family” and get to know all of the characters. I loved the silly scenes that broke up the serious mob drama. Plus, a book that has actual Italian recipes written in the text?!?! Super fun bonus!

I received an ARC of this book.

Oh my goodness! This book was absolutely incredible and one of my top reads by far! It was such an amazing blend of historical fiction, mafia/crime and thriller. From page 1, I was swept away by Jan's story. Brittnay Sears does an amazing job storytelling and recounting the events of Jan's life from the moment she met Lavio to the present day of her granddaughter's wedding with all the chaos and excitement in-between. I completely love Jan's character, her growth over the course of the book as she takes on the role of the mob boss's wife was captivating. Lavio's character swept me off my feet with his playful and romantic spirit that tugged at my heartstrings. The plot twists in this book were unpredictable which had me gasping and kept me on the edge of my seat. I cannot recommend this book enough! It is a MUST read!

This is a great saga!!
Jan Rossano is a brilliant woman. Her husband, Lavio Rossano, is the head of a major mafia organization in Montana. I know what you're thinking, mafia in Montana? Yes, and that's why they're so successful. Who would expect it?
Jan doesn't want to be the stereotypical mob wife, seen and not heard perfect housewife and mother.
She has her own ideas and is an incredibly successful asset to her husband.
Their love story is amazing. It's so perfect and sweet. Romantic, passionate, strong, and swoonworthy. They are partners in more ways than just husband and wife.

This is Jan's telling of her very full and busy life full of love, loyalty, and all the craziness that comes along with their way of life.

It's not a full 5 stars for me but is definitely 4.5 stars. (I rounded up because it does deserve it and half stars stupidly don't exist here.)

‘The Left Hand’ is a unique mafia tale and I ate this up word for word. Jan is telling her mafia story - the story of a loving, fierce mafia wife who is willing to do almost anything to protect her family.

I love how we get to hear Jan’s entire love story with Lavio, a central force in the Billings mob. We glide along through the years, climbing to the highs and falling to the lows … and I just loved the heck out of it. Watching their love story — Jan and Lavio’s adoration is electric! I can feel it in the air! I loved loved loved the Agatha Christie references!!! That made me smile!!

Their mafia family is *truly* a found family and how they were there for each other is really heartwarming. I would *love* more from this world!!! *Hint hint*. ‘The Left Hand’ is an amazing mafia love story that moved me in so many ways!!

The Left Hand was a bit of a suspenseful, romance, thriller. I absolutely loved Lavio's character. From the beginning, meeting Jan, he was such a charming, sweet, caring gentleman to her. It was no wonder she fell for him. And as he begins to work his way up the ranks and Jan realizes what it means to be a mob wife, she comes face to face with the depths she will have to go to protect the man she loves. Lavio has Frank and Enzo as his right hand men. But what he needs is someone to help out behind the scenes, someone unsuspecting. He needs a left hand man, or in this case, woman.
The plot was great and the story was twisty, however, with the story being set in the 1940's , it came across as a historical fiction more than a thriller. I also felt like the characters could have used a little more depth and detail. Aside from that, this was an intriguing story.

I am grateful to have received a free advanced reader copy of this book, and am leaving a review voluntarily. This was a wonderful, well developed, smooth read with a few moments of suspense, yet nothing too stressful. Although I love stressful suspense, I appreciated reading this book as a break from the intense thrillers and clinical books I usually pick up. This book felt like an entertaining, engaging, and much needed vacation for my mind, offering a story in which I could simply be swept away. I remained interested in the characters and plot throughout the book, eager to find out what happens next, while falling in love with Lavio's devotion, and the beauty and commitment of his relationship with Jan. Quite a fabulous read!

The story follows Jan, who meets her granddaughter while helping with her wedding plans. The story then shifts to young Jan and her love, Lavio. They fall for each other and have a beautiful wedding life. Later, Jan finds out Lavio has ties to crime/mob family but supports him. But when things start getting dangerous, will she do anything it takes to protect her family?

I enjoyed this book very much. The suspense, the mafia ties, the romance, the emotions, everything was so well written. The love between Jan and Lavio was so sweet and beautiful. I loved how Lavio always stood by her, and Jan's strong and no-nonsense personality was so great to read. Characters like Doris, Big Sal, Enzo, and others added depth to the story.

3.75/5

This was a captivating read; I was hardly able to put it down. The love story between Janis and Lavio was so sweet, honestly couple goals (also justice for Giovanna and Enzo). I will say that rather than a thriller, this novel felt more like a slice of life, albeit a chaotic one.

The twist?? I def did not see the brutality of it coming; was absolutely shocked!

Every so often the book would mention something out of time period, which did take me out of the story (the main culprit for loss of a star), but an enjoyable read nonetheless.

One of the most interesting reads of my summer so far, and would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a shorter, fast-paced, solid story.

Thank you to the author and the author agency for the eARC :)

I knew from the very first chapter, Jan was going to be a lady to admire; "And before you start getting all judgmental about me drinking a martini for lunch, I would kindly like to tell you to go kick rocks."

Jan, what a woman! No nonsense, she doesn't get intimidated, giving it back to the toughest of men and willing to get her hands dirty to protect those she loves.

This is an incredible debut! First off, the love and affection between Lavio & Jan, SWOON! Holy hell is that man suave! And Jan's historical recollection of the "family" and their dealing really keep the story moving and keeps the reader fully engaged and wanting more.

The Left Hand is a 1950's Romance Love Story. It Follows Jan's life as she falls in love with Lavio Rossano, who is a part of a crime family. Jan is an easy main character to love. The book centers around how far she is willing to go for her family and friends. The pacing of this book picked up and built along the way as the family goes through different mob and personal tribulations. I did have to keep reminding myself that this is a period piece, as I kept wondering why Jan immediately went along with and did not question Lavios job/business from the start, but I think that was the times in the 50s. I did shed some tears at the end of this book and really enjoyed the sweet love story.

If you’re looking for a story that wraps you in love, hits you in the heart with found family feels, and leaves you sobbing in peace, this book is it.

I didn’t expect to fall this hard, but here we are: fully attached, emotionally ruined, and completely in love. The writing? Gorgeous. The characters? Unforgettable. The vibes? Immaculate. And that ending?? It hit, but in the gentlest, most soul-cradling way.

Brittany J. Sears, you’ve officially ruined all other books for me (in the best way).

If you love stories where love and found family are at the heart of everything ,don’t even think twice. Read it.

This is a romantic crime novel that's set in the 1950s. This is a well written and totally unique storyline about the women characters behind their mafia men. Jan is a young woman from Montana who moves to the big city and meets her future husband Lavio. Jan soon realizes there's something a bit unusual about her husband's line of work. She also realizes that she plays a unique part as well, being his wife, she has her own important role in the mafia family. This was a great story and I loved how it is a totally different take on a mafia romance. I loved the character development of Jan and how she evolved into her role as a mafia wife. You should definitely pick this one up.
