The Left Hand by Brittnay J Sears
Thank you @haylingbookstormltd for the gifted copy!
Unfortunately this did not work for me. The premise sounded good, but I expected more. Mob wife, jazz club era, crime family, murder, and based on real people! I'm intrigued! But then it fizzled out.
Jan grew up on a farm in rural Montana. When she starts college in the late 1940s, she meets the handsome and charming Lavio Rossano at a party and he sweeps her off her feet. Soon Jan learns that Lavio's work is not what she thought and is actually involved in the mob. He moves up the ranks, but when things become dangerous, Jan realizes they need more help behind the scenes.
My main issue with this book is that it took SO LONG for anything real to happen. Most of it was Jan and Lavio's relationship, and bonding with the crime family. Finally, at around 55-60%, something starts to happen and the risk and action amps up. Then the rest happens so quickly that there was no real build up of suspense during the first half to make the payoff worthwhile. I also found it odd that Jan immediately accepted Lavio's criminality without question. There should have been a slow acceptance, bit by bit, rather than instant support. Then, the end was predictable. At least it was a quick read!
Also, the author states that the main character names were from her great grandparents, and lists who each character was inspired by from her family. Was this her actual family? Were they in the mob? Seems like an odd choice.
Unfortunately a dud for me, but this will appeal to readers who enjoy more character driven stories focusing on relationships and family, and who are not easily squeamish.
CW: typical mobster behavior, DV, violence, blood, injuries, torture, etc.
