Dropping the Ball

Pull off the swankiest benefit gala the city has ever seen? Kaitlyn Armstrong has got this. Do it with the high school rival who once humiliated her? Kaitlyn Armstrong so does not have this…

Kaitlyn Armstrong has a pull off a glitzy fundraising gala to redeem her family’s reputation. After all, besides one tiny—okay, catastrophic—failure in high school, Kaitlyn is her family’s rock. Who better to trust?

But then Kaitlyn meets the architect she must work with to pull off the event. Micah Croft is the man who broke her nose, her heart, and her perfect academic record in high school.

Now he’s breaking her eight-year streak of avoiding him.

Kaitlyn fell under his spell once and it ruined graduation. Distraction means failure, and she can’t fail again—not when it will cost her family public humiliation in front of Austin’s social elite.

When the gala plans go wrong, and Micah is the only part that feels right, can Kaitlyn risk choosing him over finally making up for her mistakes in the past?

Dropping the Ball is a closed door romcom featuring old high school rivals with a strong dose of Gilbert and Anne competition and pining. It's a second chance at first love romance with all the sizzle and swoon, but no spice.

I picked this up on a whim and was instantly hooked—the very first line had me laughing! At first, Kaitlyn’s lingering high school grudge against Micah felt a bit overblown, and I was really worried it would drag on as the main conflict. But thankfully, Kaitlyn's sister hilariously calls out her nonsense early on. It was so great.

Kaitlyn has a lot on her plate: studying for the bar exam, organizing a massive New Year’s fundraiser gala to redeem her family’s name, and unexpectedly reuniting with Micah, her old high-school rival turned successful architect, who’s hired to help with the event. A relationship isn’t exactly her top priority, but as Micah reenters her life, their old rivalry naturally evolves into something so much more!

The story dives deep into gala preparations, but the tender moments between Kaitlyn and Micah were EVERYTHING. Swoon! Their dynamic was the perfect blend of sarcastic banter, dry humour (my weakness!), and a genuine, healthy communication of expectations and boundaries. Spanning several months, from September to December, it delivers plenty of cozy celebrations along the way, too! Soft, sweet, and full of depth, this romance was an absolute delight. I’m so glad I picked it up!

This was the first book I have ever read from Melanie Jacobson and it definitely won't be the last! Her characters were flawed and relatable, the banter was perfection and the heat level was amazing.

I loved that we were able to see both the MCs when they were together in high school and also in the present. It was so sweet to see how they both changed and see things from both perspectives.

I absolutely adored Micah! He was the perfect cinnamon roll who could still banter and push Kaitlyn's buttons. I loved that he actively went after her and wanted her to see him. I love that he grew up opposite to Kaitlyn in almost every way, but didn't let his tough circumstances harden his heart. Instead he saw and appreciated all those that were in his corner supporting him, even when they weren't blood related.

Kaitlyn was such a fun FMC too. I loved that we got to see her let down her guards and just have fun with Micah's help. I love that we got to see her stand up for herself and start to believe in what Micah saw in her.

I loved all the moments that they were together from elevator rides, to scary movies, to trick or treating, and dancing. I don't think I could choose a favorite. This book had me laughing, snorting, swooning, and feeling all the feels.

If you are looking for an amazing romcom filled with the best holiday celebrations like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years definitely give this one a go!

Not sure how I've never read a book by Melanie Jacobson before, but here we are. Dropping The Ball is my first by this amazing indie romance author. And WOW! I've been missing out.

Dropping The Ball is a great enemies (or past rivals) to lovers. The characters are amazing and what I love about this clean romance is that there is tons of sizzle, smoldering kisses and off the charts attraction.

Melanie Jacobson's latest book was lots of fun! Kaitlyn and Micah's second chance romance is a fantastic blend of chemistry, banter, and character growth.

I enjoyed the flashbacks and the Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe vibes as they were competitors in school, and then to see their current lives and a new and sweet relationship develop between them.

What I loved—
Second chance at love
Dual POV
Cinnamon roll mmc
Witty banter & dialogue
Mature communication
Halloween night
Watching scary movies together
The New Year's Eve Gala
Her red dress
Lots of sparks & chemistry
The epilogue

Dropping the Ball is a sweet and lovely romance. I loved the mix of romance, fun and lighthearted humor, along with a lot of emotional depth—all written in Melanie’s wonderfully unique voice and style.

I received an ARC but a positive review was not required.

Well that was absolutely delightful. I lost track of the number of times I giggled and/ or kicked my feet while reading.

If you need a holiday romcom, this is the one. All the holidays (Halloween - New Years). All the romance. All the comedy. All the feels.

The opening line had me cackling and really set the tone: “I am staring at the pecs that broke my nose eight years ago.” 🤣🤣

So many hilarious moments and top notch banter… but also amazing emotional depth.

Micah and Kaitlyn are full of heart. The depth and growth they experience throughout the story was absolutely beautiful. I love the way we learn about them through the dual POV and high school flashbacks. (Begging for an audiobook with dual narrators pleaseeee).

Micah is an MC of dreams. He is all the things and I’m very obsessed with him. Please just read it to see what I mean and then message me so we can gush about him ok???

Thank you to the author for the chance to read an advance copy!!

Dropping the Ball is connected to the Betting on Love series (Kaitlyn is Madi's little sister), and readers who have read that series will enjoying seeing a few familiar characters make brief appearances... but this can definitely be enjoyed as a standalone.

The last thing that Kaitlyn expected when she stepped in to help Madi during her maternity leave was to be planning a fundraising gala with the man who had witness (and caused) her most embarrassing moment and for whom she blamed losing valedictorian... and still held a grudge against so many years later. Right away, Kaitlyn and Micah drew me in with their banter and chemistry. While they knew each other in high school, the more they got to know each in the present, the more they realized they there was a lot more going on that they never knew... and I absolutely loved seeing them come together as the story goes on. Unlike your typical holiday romcom which tends to have a much shorter timeline, I loved that this one covered every major holiday from Halloween to New Years... so while you'll still get some holiday cheer, it could really be enjoyed any time of the year too! This is a story that will have you laughing out loud... but will also leave you with a feeling of found family and community that I adored!

Dropping the Ball is a closed-door romance with kisses only. It does have a small amount of minor language.

**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

“Madison mouths, Be nice. Easy for her to say. Her past did not just come back to haunt her.”

There’s nothing worse than an embarrassing high school crush reincarnating in the future, but sometimes a little growth, experience and maturity is just what is needed to stir up these dormant embers and to explore once more.

I’m not wealthy and could relate more to Micah, who is down-to-earth and works hard. He knows people but because his community works together for the better good, whereas Kaitlyn has a golden spoon, yet she’s not the kind of person to flaunt or think she’s better than. She just…is. The combination of these characters is flavorful–sweet, a little spicy, and ultra satisfying.

Now working together on a huge gala, although slightly orchestrated, their connection is much richer and in true Melanie Jacobson fashion, delightfully witty, charming, and oh-so-swoony! I snort-laughed, I swooned, I let out a few dreamy sighs, and wore a permagrin.

In its entirety, this one is a book for the holiday season and for any romance lover and it’s not too late to read, since the culmination is on New Year’s Eve.

I thought this was more of Christmas read but it’s not. Christmas is briefly mentioned. This one focused way too much on the Gala and non-profit. It was a lot of shoptalk I wasn’t interested in. The romance took a major backseat. I also expected the FMC’s grudge to be a bigger part of the story but she seemed to get over it quickly and her reasoning for the grudge was silly for me. There was a lot of potential with this one but there were just too many details of the preparation for the Gala.

Kaitlyn and Micah have history. His pecs broke her nose in high school! Now Kaitlyn has to work with him on the biggest event she’s ever planned.
I loved the pec story, and Kaitlyn and Micah’s history. Poor Kaitlyn! Micah and Kaitlyn were adorable together! I loved the banter, the romantic tension, and the sweet way he helped her face the problems that were overwhelming her.
This book will make you laugh, make you smile, and even help you look outside of yourself. It follows Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s which means it’s perfect to read all year long! What are you waiting for?

Content: clean (making out, a handful of minor swears, a parent with bi-polar lightly touched on)

Dropping the Ball is loosely related to Betting on the Brainiac, but can definitely be read independently.

Kaitlyn and Micah have always been rivals. But she’s also always harbored a secret crush on him since high school. Because he beat her out of being Valedictorian (among other things) Kaitlyn has held a grudge against Micah and strenuously avoided him.

Years later she’s forced to work with him on a project that must succeed at all costs. Can she put her feelings aside? She’s under great pressure that is really getting g to her. Will Micah help. Does she want him to?

This was a sweet story of second chances and realizing that there’s always more than we see on the surface. It makes a great holiday read.

3.5⭐️

I had no idea that this book had anything to do with Melanie Jacobson’s Betting on Love series, so I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that the FMC, Kaitlyn Armstrong, is Madison’s sister from Betting on the Brainiac! I love fun connections like that ☺️ It’s honestly so great being able to watch the sisters reform a sisterly bond later in life, especially after having seen so much of them in Betting on the Brainiac ♥️

So while I love a good enemies-to-lovers trope, I don’t love when it’s built off of a silly grudge that’s honestly completely meaningless. Thankfully this book did good with getting things resolved pretty quick, or else I might have liked it a good deal less.

Okay, Micah Croft is SUCH a sweetheart 🥹 Like literally the sweetest guy ever!! I love his super caring heart, especially how he takes care of his mom. He had a tough childhood, but his neighbors really showed up for him through it all. I love a good community ♥️

Ngl, Kaitlyn had to grow on me. I wasn’t an overly huge fan of her in Betting on the Brainiac so I didn’t exactly love her from the get-go in this book either. But she did start to worm her way into my good graces when she let go of her grudge, and I 100% loved her when she said she wanted red hair because I would kill to have red hair lol. I love that she relates to Anne Shirley 👒🥕 I’m a big fan of good fashion and all of Kaitlyn’s outfits made my brain happy 😄

Opposites can be good for each other and in the case of Micah and Kaitlyn, it’s 100% true. I enjoyed watching Micah slowly get through Kaitlyn’s hard exterior and eventually get her to loosen up and enjoy life. His faith in her despite her failures really showed his true character ♥️ I love that Kaitlyn was finally able to be truly happy 🥹

Top Moments:
💃🏼 She’s the Man tampon moment
💃🏼 Holding Harper Ivy Mae for the first time
💃🏼 Carrying Kaitlyn inside
💃🏼 Anne of Green Gables references
💃🏼 Slow dancing together
💃🏼 Putting together her costume
💃🏼 “Oh, Katie Armstrong.” 🫠
💃🏼 Handing out candy bars
💃🏼 Watching a horror movie together
💃🏼 Elevator scene
💃🏼 All of the Christmas festivities

I absolutely loved this second chance romance that sees high school rivals, Micah and Kaitlyn forced to work together on a New Years Eve charity gala over the course of several months and realizing they've both had feelings for one another all this time.

Can they make something work this time around despite being from vastly different worlds? Micah was book boyfriend goals - so sweet and supportive and Kaitlyn was the type A overachiever who needed to learn to prioritize herself and stick up to her domineering parents.

A bonus for me was the excellent mental health rep (Micah's mother has bipolar disorder) and we get to see what it was like for him growing up as a child of someone with mental health ups and downs. I also loved that we get more Maddie from Betting on the brainiac and while this is sort of a spinoff from that book it can be read as a standalone. Many thanks to the author for an early digital ARC copy. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book and all opinions are my own.

This is one of those books that has you ending on a happy sigh and with a smile. I'm still smiling even as I type this.

First of all, I have to say that Micah has the coolest job EVER. I mean, upcycling whatever he finds into amazing pieces of art? I've always wanted to be able to do that, but I don't have an artistic bone in my body. I've always wanted to draw, but can't even color in the lines, so I admire artwork. Always wanted to dance, but have no sense of rhythm, so I binge any kind of dancing I can find. I'm not good with words, so I review books instead of writing them. And on and on. Anyway, if Micah were a real person, he'd be someone whose work I'd love to see.

And Kaitlyn, well, who doesn't want to be a millionaire? But not only is she crazy rich, she does good with what she has.

Kaitlyn and Micah go way back to high school. Ok, it'd be way back for me; for them, it's only like 8 years. But still. They've known each other for a long time. Then they get reintroduced. And I just love this story.

Also, I love collecting quotes from books, but my favorite from this one, I can't even put in writing because it comes at the very end. So you read the book, then come back and tell me what you think that quote is.

Caveat: there are a few cuss words in the book.

Melanie Jacobson always delivers witty banter and wonderful romance with fresh stories! I never feel like I’ve read her stories before, and Dropping the Ball was no different.

Dropping the Ball is a delightful romcom with high school rivals, now years down the road, being forced to work together on a non-profit fundraising event. Micah and Kaitlyn have all the tension! I loved getting to relive their early high school days through the flashback chapters. It provided a baseline for the rivalry between the two and built up the mutual attraction in the present day. Jacobson also did an excellent job of slowly pulling back the layers of both characters’ back stories, but especially Micah. His childhood and the dynamics with his mother added a level of depth to this romcom.

I also really enjoyed getting to journey through all the fall and winter seasons, from Halloween through New Year. So many books are packed into such a short span of time, and the timeframe of this book seemed much more realistic.

Also, the audiobook narrators did a wonderful job. This audiobook is done with dual narration, which always makes me happy. If you haven’t read Dropping the Ball or you have read it and you’re looking for a fun reread, this audiobook is a great choice!

This was so good! I loved the romance, the snarky dialogue, the family relationships, and the very satisfying HEA. Micah and Katie were so easy to like and I also loved Katie's relationship with her sister, Madison.

What a nice conclusion to Jacobson's "Betting on" series.

No profanity and some PG-13 kissing. Yay!

Happy release day to this beauty!!!

Melanie Jacobson knows how to write an opening line, and y’all, this one had me cracking up. 😂

If you’ve followed her Betting on Love series, you’ll see a few familiar characters— most notably Oliver & Madison, because our FMC is Madi’s little sister, Kaitlyn.

When Madi takes off on maternity leave, Kaitlyn steps in and fills her position at Threadwork. Her biggest responsibility is making sure the gala (to be held on NYE) goes off without a hitch. This requires that she communicate and work with Micah Croft, who happens to be her rival from high school. But as it turns out, there’s a lot about Micah that Kaitlyn didn’t know back then.

Kaitlyn is one stubborn lady but I liked how Micah helped balance that out. He saw Kaitlyn’s needs and saw to them so sweetly.

Something that was really fun about this book is that we got time on Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve! It truly is a *holiday* romcom.

You will not regret picking this one up!

Favorite Quotes:
😂 How can this be happening? How can I be standing in a hipster heaven of repurposed furniture, face to pec with him? I have theories, but truly, there's only one answer. The universe hates me. It is a hate so vigorous and specific that part of me respects it.

❤️ "It really means something. To be chosen."

😍 Micah's faith in me is complete despite my failures. He was there for me last night. He wants to be there for me today, tomorrow, the day after that. He told me that. He's shown me that.

✨ "This feels impossible."
"It feels inevitable," I counter.
"Impossible the way magic is impossible."
"Inevitable the way physics is inevitable."
"I beat you in physics," she reminds me, smiling.
"Then you should understand the inevitability even better than I do."

💋 "Katie-Kate-Kaitlyn?" he says, his hands framing my face. "I think we have to call it a tie."
I press a deliriously happy kiss against his lips.
"No, Micah Croft. I think it means we both win."

Oh, wow! Melanie Jacobson is (and has been for years) an auto-buy author for me! To say she knocked it out of the park with this book is an understatement! The second chances! The chemistry! The banter! The character growth! The venue and gala details! Micha and Kaitlyn! Perfection!!

Kaitlyn has a nearly 10-year-old grudge against Micah from when he beat her to the title of valedictorian by a fraction of a point! So, when she finds out she’ll be working closely with him to plan and execute a New Year’s Eve gala, she is less than thrilled about it! It doesn’t take long before their verbal sparring and amazing chemistry kick and in these two discover that the grown up Kaitlyn and Micha just might be able to forgive and forget!

These two are so, so fun! It was so fun to see them learn lore about each other’s pasts and current lives and get another chance at some lost opportunities of the past and exciting chances at the future!

Ahhh!! The whole book is just: Chef’s Kiss! 🤌🏼

Jacobson is one of my go-to authors for clean, lighthearted, satisfying rom-coms. If she writes it, I buy it. And this did not disappoint. She did not (wait for it) drop the ball (sorry not sorry :)

But seriously: all the right vibes, great characters, super cute premise. Loved this.

(Also: If I could, I'd give the book a whole extra star—so, 6—just for the way Jacobson handles the whole "he did this thing to me a million years ago and I still can't get over it" trope. I usually *cannot stand* that premise, but here it is done right.)

Melanie Jacobson is an auto-buy author for me. I was even more thrilled to receive an ARC copy of this book and see that it ties in with her Betting series. I absolutely adore her characters and I love a good holiday romcom, so being able to see Kaitlyn find her happily ever after was magical. This book had so many unique aspects that I enjoyed and appreciated how they were incorporated. I especially enjoyed how the book spanned the holiday season, beginning with Halloween and ending with New Year's Eve. Some of our beloved characters make an appearance throughout the book, which was an added bonus. This book could be read as a standalone, but I guarantee you'll want to go and snatch up Madison and Oliver's story right away if so. A quick, fun, and flirty read for the holidays.

This book had a lot of potential, and so did the characters. But somehow the book focused on so many things that I wasn't even sure if I wanted the characters to be together.

The gala overtook the story, there were way too many details, from the installation, to the details of the dresses, too many references about books, tv and movies that if you are not familiar with them, it will go over your head.

I couldn't relate or sympathize with the characters either. How do you get over an 8 year grudge after one single talk? And how do you fall in love without communicating (because their banter and competition did not feel like communication to me).

I wish the book focused more on the emotions and the feelings they had kept bottled up for so long.

I received an advance copy of the book and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

If you love enemies to lovers, may I suggest a rivals-to-love book since it has the same vibe? Dropping the Ball is a delightful romantic comedy blending humor, heartfelt moments and just the right amount of tension to keep you hooked from the first page.

Kaitlyn Armstrong and Micah Croft have been rivals since high school and she still remembers that he beat her for class valedictorian by a hair! When she finds out she has to work with him on the big New Year's gala she's counting on to help restore her family's reputation, she's none too pleased--get ready for holiday glamour and a delicious romance!

One reason I love enemies/frenemies/rivals to more stories is the banter and this book has it, but I also enjoyed Kaitlyn and Micah's journey toward understanding each other's past actions . . . why they did what they did. I loved all the descriptions of the decorations and prepping for the gala but I think what I loved more was Kaitlyn finally realizing she didn't have to be perfect. She didn't have to be like her sister Madi. She had her strengths of her own. Micah is the swooniest! That's all you need to know.

This is not solely a Christmas romance as Kaitlyn and Micah's journey to love encompasses Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s! I received a complimentary copy. All opinions in this review are my own.

Well, this book felt unedited.

I didn’t like how much attention was on FMC’s sister, Madison — Madison this, Madison that. The book wasn’t about her. It honestly felt like maybe she was the original FMC and then Kaitlyn was created later, because Madison’s personality was much more developed and interesting.

The story was dragging, weighed down by unnecessary details. The relationship between the main characters was very slow, and their chemistry felt inconsistent.

I didn’t understand Micah or his actions. He kept saying Kaitlyn gave him whiplash, but it was actually him doing that to me. I couldn’t get a read on him even when we got his POV.

Micah and Kaitlyn should’ve become an item after the Halloween party — that was their peak. When they didn’t, the relationship just became awkward and lost its spark. I was also slightly annoyed that their bedroom scenes weren’t shown or even talked about. They just kissed and suddenly became boyfriend and girlfriend after FMC declared she was “ready.”

P.S. — Did Micah ever actually answer why they didn’t work out in high school..?
