Thawed Out is an opposites attract, second chance romance featuring an established couple on the edge of divorce, a ferocious snow storm, precocious children and a healthy dose of holiday magic.
Kiren knows there is a storm coming when he goes to the cabin to deliver divorce papers to his husband Flynn, but he doesn’t plan to stay long. He hates that it’s come to this, but they just can’t seem to do anything without arguing anymore. When he finds Flynn looking so skinny and unhappy, he ends up staying to talk.
And maybe to try harder not to break up their family.
Flynn knows Kiren is just as tired as he is. They both work hard. They both take care of their two kids. He doesn’t want to give up, but between his long hours and going to school, he always seems to be in trouble when gets home.
Before they know it, they’re snowed in with nothing but time on their hands. The two of them decide that they don’t want to be frozen in the worst time of their married life. But can they work together to find the balance they need to start again?
JODI spent too many years in New York and San Francisco stage managing classical plays, edgy fringe work, and the occasional musical. She, therefore, is overdramatic, takes herself way too seriously, and has been known to randomly break out in song. Her men are imperfect but genuine, stubborn but likable, often kinky, and frequently their own worst enemies. They are characters you can’t help but fall in love with while they stumble along the path to their happily ever after.
For those looking to get on her good side, Jodi’s addictions include nonfat lattes, Malbec and tequila however you pour it. She’s also obsessed with Shakespeare and Broadway musicals. She can be found wearing sock monkey gloves while typing when it’s cold, and on the beach enjoying the sun and the ocean when it’s hot. When she’s not writing and/or vacuuming sand out of her laptop, Jodi mentors queer youth and will drop everything for live music. Jodi lives near New York City with her beautiful wife, and together they are mothers of dragons (cleverly disguised as children) and slaves to an enormous polydactyl cat.
A Christmas former cowboy book from a lovely writing duo. These authors deliver that relationship bubble that is so pleasing to read. Here, it is an on the verge of divorced couple snowed in at their mountain cabin when one spouse shows up with the divorce papers for signing. The other spouse has been staying there, staying away from everyone, and is heartsick about the ending of the relationship, to the point of looking physically ill. While the one husband is caring for the other, and being secretly glad that they are snowed in, the feelings for each other flame up and divorce papers are thrown into the fire in a really nice scene of 'Let's be together, no matter what.' The healing of their relationship had me a bit on tenterhooks as the couple analyze their feelings and words almost constantly, afraid of getting into the weeds again of an uncommunicative relationship. It all worked out and it was nice to see the children healing along with their dads.
This is a second chance romance with a difference. The difference is that Flynn and Kiren are married, but on the verge of divorce, when everything falls apart and life gets in the way of their perfect love. The story tells how they find their way back to each other, and although it's quite heartwarming to read, the story also clearly demonstrates just how difficult maintaining a marriage can be. I did find this element a little off putting, cos when I'm reading a Christmas story, I want love and joy, not a catalogue of what can go wrong! So angsty! Still, there's also a lot of sweetness, emotion, tears and laughter. Not to mention their children were delightful, so happy that their Dad and Mom-Dad (?), are living together again.
Thawed Out by Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga is a heartfelt and hopeful second-chance romance that highlights the power of communication, perseverance, and love.
Kiren heads to the mountains to confront his ex, Flynn, at the secluded cabin they once shared, aiming to finalize their divorce. But when he sees Flynn—exhausted, thin, and clearly struggling—his resolve falters. Staying long enough to push Flynn to read and discuss the papers turns into something more when they finally have the argument they’ve avoided. During this raw and emotional conversation, Kiren realises the truth: he doesn’t want the divorce at all. In a moment of clarity, he throws the divorce papers into the fire, sparking the beginning of their journey back to each other.
The story unfolds as Kiren and Flynn begin to communicate honestly, facing the challenges that pulled them apart in the first place. Flynn is deeply committed to finishing his medical degree to become a physician’s assistant, a demanding goal that requires sacrifice and focus. Together, they work out a plan to survive the next five months while managing their lives, careers, and shared responsibilities, especially for their children.
The world-building is vivid and immersive, bringing the cabin setting and the complexities of their family dynamic to life. The supporting characters, including their parents, provide a strong foundation of love and encouragement that helps them navigate their struggles. These moments of familial support add warmth and authenticity to the narrative.
This writing duo excels at creating characters with depth and relatability. Flynn’s determination to better himself and Kiren’s willingness to reevaluate his priorities make them a couple worth rooting for. Their rekindled romance feels genuine as they work through their past missteps to create a stronger future together.
Thawed Out is an emotional, satisfying read about reconciliation and the hard work it takes to rebuild a relationship. With its mix of heartache, hope, and love, it’s another win from Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga. I can’t wait to see what they deliver next!

I wasn't expecting a holiday romance to have me sobbing before I even finished chapter 2, but here we are. This isn't your light and fluffy Christmas book - this is a raw, real look at life with two small kids, where both parents and budgets are stretched too thin. This is the reality of what comes after the happy ever after.
Unable to reach his soon-to-be-ex by phone, Kiran drives up to Flynn's cabin to deliver and have him sign their divorce papers. The plan is to get in and out quickly, but Flynn's appearance is shocking and, despite their inability to say anything without taking shots at each other, Kiran is concerned. This is a cabin in the middle of the mountains, in November, so the weather is always a iffy. So, of course, a snowstorm rolls in, stranding Kiran and Flynn in a small cabin, leaving them with no choice but to co-exist.
Because it's a second-chance romance, Kiran and Flynn are both reminded about why they married each other to begin with, and the divorce papers are destroyed. Which takes us to about the 25% mark of the book. The real story comes after the roads are plowed and they leave the cabin. Flynn moves home but neither of them is delusional enough to believe that a few nights stranded in a snowstorm would magically fix their issues.
This was an unexpected delight for me. It's so rare to see what happens when the magic of a new relationship wears off and real life begins. It's the reality of kids, and illness, and work, and having too little money and not enough sleep. And it's beautiful to see Kiran and Flynn work through it and fight for each other.
Thawed Out is a wonderful addition to the Merry Everything series and I loved it. Kiren and Flynn find themselves at a crossroad, do they give up on their marriage and family or do they find a way to make it work again? Both of them are exhausted and stressed out from trying to juggle everything they have to do and seem to have forgotten why they wanted to be together in the first place. Loving each other is not the problem but putting in the hard work to fix their issues is the only way they can move forward. Thanks to the amazing support of their parents they can see a light at the end of the tunnel and the joy of raising their two beautiful kids as well as understanding and supporting each other through the good and bad times has given them both the strength to make it work even when it is really, really hard. I love that this story depicts real life and how staying together can be a choice that needs to be made every day when times are tough and that relying on your partner is sometimes the hardest part of all. The ending is perfect and I can't wait to read more books by these authors.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
Mile high angst, I think Payne/Tortuga broke the angst meter with this one. And there's exhaustion, bone deep, fall asleep at the wheel burnout type exhaustion. Which leads to anger and shouting, hurt feelings and divorce papers. The beginning of this story was a touch too gritty. With little of the usual Payne/Tortuga grace. There were children, food and animals as per P/T norms. Jasper and Cassie were good kids, but the toll of their parents fighting and separation shows in their anger and insecurities. The foods only seemed to highlight the couple's exhaustion and monetary worries. The beloved pets were a 'let's see what the summer brings'. Both Kiren and Flynn's parents were supportive. But worried. They offered solid, kind advice, and in the end it was their solution that took so much of the pressure off the two men. It was a good book, certainly not my favorite of this pair of talented writers. Not quickly read, I kept putting it down. Even with the eternal Christmas tree in the living room, I'm not sure it's a very Christmasy story. I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my review.
Thawed Out is a contemporary romance from authors Jodi Payne and B.A. Tortuga. It’s part of the Merry Everything series and the plot gets a little boost from the wintery season and the holiday spirit. In addition to our two MCs struggling to make their marriage work, the story includes their two young children who unwittingly represent one of the major challenges Flynn and Kiran face: the vicious circle of endlessly working to provide for a family at the expense of actually getting to spend time with the family. There are also both MCs’ parents who chime in with needed counterpoints and offer an intervention at just the right moment.
Overall, if you enjoy slice of life stories where being a couple is the point, then I think you’ll enjoy this story. The two main characters take the reader on a lengthy exploration of love and how, sometimes, that alone is not enough to sustain two people.
Finalizing their divorce Kiren heads to his soon to be ex-husband's cabin to get him to sign the divorce papers. Kiren knows there is a pending storm but he believes he can get their get Flynn to sign the papers and make it back home to their two kids for Christmas. However Flynn wants to read all the papers and that does no go well. The storm as intensified and now it is not safe for Kiren to leave.
Flynn's world is falling apart. He will graduate soon with his medical degree and trying to work hard to be able to have a better life for his husband and kids he ends up losing them. He does not want a divorce and wants to make his marriage work. Luckily with the storm Kiren has to stay and they finally talk things out and realize it is what both of them want.
Will the snow ever start? Will Kiren and Flynn really try to make the marriage again? Will the kids be happy to be a family of four again? Can their wish come true and their marriage work? Will Flynn's career be worth all the hours? Will their parents be the saving grace?
This series always leaves me with a warm fuzzy feeling. I enjoyed Kiren and Flynn’s story. Their situation is realistic, and I liked the effort it took both of them to make their marriage work, especially with the business and stressfulness of life around them.
I liked how they reconnected because of the storm, but didn’t lose sight that being alone for two days is nothing like dealing with the situations that led to their almost divorce in the first place. They’re both good men trying to do the right thing for their family and build a future, but trying to balance that, the mounting bills, and each other, is going to need work. I also liked that, despite their determination to be there for each other, it’s easier said than done.
The slice of life family scenes are wonderful, but their kids feel real, and I liked that they were worried their dads might divorce again, and reacted like children to difficult situations with tantrums and yelling.
I loved how supportive both Kirin and Flynn’s parents are, and their working together to help out is heartwarming and sweet.
Well, I’ll admit I did not expect to be full on ugly crying with a Christmas book! I should have known though when I read the blurb because Jodi and BA always pack an emotional punch. Definitely have tissues at the ready. This was… wow. Kiren and Flynn are so lost initially it was heartbreaking (hence ugly crying) but as with all of these authors characters they’re also not blind to the fact that they love each other and that sometimes that takes a whole hell of a lot of work. They’d gotten to a bad place but I loved that they were able to see past the anger and hurt to realise that if they worked really hard together they could rebuild, better and stronger the relationship they had. Absolutely beautiful and despite making me cry very Christmassy which was just what I needed. I also loved that the hard part didn’t last forever. This was primarily a book showing a couple working to make their relationship strong, even if the beginning was rocky.
I've enjoyed every book in this series. It's a perfect, fairly low-angst relatable Christmas novella. In this book, Kiren and Flynn are one signature from divorce. Then, they get snowed into a cabin for several days, take time to really talk, and decide that they will give their love a second chance.
With two children and overloaded work schedules, the two men are more than at the end of their ropes. To top it off, Flynn is in the last semester of his work to become a Physician's Assistant. If they can just hold on, make it through money problems and no time, they have a chance for a calmer life.
This book starts out gloomy, but it doesn't stay there long. Most of the story is an arc toward healing, renewed passion, family fun, and a second chance at love. This is a lovely, feel-good story of hope and love.
Payne and Tortuga definitely tug at the heartstrings at the beginning of this book, putting their readers through as much as Kiren and Flynn before any reconciliation is in sight. This, of course, makes the sweet (and spicy) reconnection all the better. Winter, and the holiday season, acts as much as a stressor on these men as it does as a setting, and deciding not to divorce doesn't suddenly mean an end to their problems. The best part of this book is the rocky road that follows. The idea that this couple is now all the stronger for their previous issues is the high note we all deserve after this emotional second-chance story.
Disclaimer: I received a digital review copy of this book from the authors.
I love this writing duos works. Kiren is driving up to his ex’s cabin in the mountains to get him to sign their divorce papers. When he sees how thin and tired Flynn is, he stays so Flynn can read the papers and have an argument over how long he can keep the kids. As they start to talk, Kiren realizes that he doesn’t want to get a divorce and throws the divorce papers in the fire. The story starts from there as they start communicating more and work to get their life in order. With Flynn working on his medical degree so he can be become a physicians assistant, they have to get through the next five months before spending more time together as a family. Loved the world building and the help of the parents got them through the tough times. Cannot wait to read more from these authors.
Romance stories tend to be two single people who meet and get together. Sometimes you see two people who are divorced but don't want to be, and the book is about them getting back together. It's not often I get to read a romance about a married couple who almost get divorced but decide to stay together, and the entire book is about their struggles, individually and together, to keep their marriage working and their family happy. Kiren and Flynn were struggling with work, school, bills, and raising two kids and it was taking a toll. But when you decide the person you love is it for you, you pull out all the stops to make it work. This was a glimpse into real life of a struggling couple. Yes there were sexy times but this was a story that was based on reality and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
On the verge of divorce, Flynn and Kiren are one signature from throwing everything away. The final straw was Kiren wanting the kids for the summer and monogamously offering Flynn spring break. Trading 5 weeks for 1 just won't do it for Flynn. Flynn needs the kids in his life. Love has never been the problem; they're just worn out. Flynn is just one semester from finishing his Physician's Assistant program. He will be doing his practicals and working at the local hospital in the ER, while raising two children. I can't imagine why he's stressed. Meanwhile Kiren is a teacher and has picked tutoring on the side. The struggle is real as is the sleep deprovision. Flynn and Kiren only have to hold on for 5 more months and all the sacrifice will be worth it.
As much as stories of first falling in love are fun to read, it is nice to read about an established couple who are in trouble and get a chance to recalibrate and try again. Kiren and Flynn love one another but are at a bad place in their marriage and wondering if they need to throw in the towel. The gift of getting snowed in and having a chance to spend time talking it out and realizing that they want to give things another try is so encouraging not only for them but for their children. It was so easy to root for this pair to get their second chance/wind with one another and come out of the storm - literal and emotional - together. I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Flynn and Kiren are married with children, but things haven't been very good, because there is too much work, to many expenses, and arguments, too. They don't see a way to fix it, but time alone, gives them a chance to discuss it and get to the heart of the problems.
We are along for the talks, issues brought out in the open as they try to find a path forward. This is a serious but thought-filled story of two hard working men, who go off track, but realize they are both to blame.
Family is helpful, the kids are cute and have tender hearts, too. Our men restart their sexy times after the long dry spell, and the original love is still intact. But what about the issues ?
Kiren and Flynn are on the edge of divorce with the responsibilities of work, parenting and life in general pushing them apart. It's a sudden snowstorm that has them sheltered together in their cabin and forced to look at what's been going on. Flynn is looking thinner, more worn down and that really affects Flynn but it's when they finally talk instead of reactive shouting that they are able to move forward instead of apart. It's another wonderful family read from BA and Jodi. I love that this couple has a second chance at their HEA, especially with two such adorable children. You can feel how worn down both men are but it's their love for each other and their family that gets them through, along with very loving families. Stubbornness may possibly have been a contributing factor. It turns into a heartwarming romance when they take their second chance and it's a very enjoyable story. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

This is a story about what happens after the happily ever after. Kiren is fed up with his husband. He drives up to the family cabin to serve him with divorce papers. Flynn is at the cabin because he needs a break after finishing his finals. Getting snowed in helps them to break the ice and start to communicate with each other. When they realize that they still love each other and want to stay together, they make a vow to never get to that point again. But Flynn still has to finish school, Kiren has to continue to teach and they have two kids to raise. Can they keep their promise to each other? Another great read in this series! Each book can be read as a standalone.
This one hit home for me because I've seen so many relationships die on that hill... and sometimes just getting a chance to be themselves alone together without the rest of the world can work a holiday miracle.
This book isn't an instant reconnection, but it is a thoughtful and lovely holiday story about communication, forgiveness and fighting for what you really want. I love how these two actually take the time to listen to what the other person has to say and put aside their own hurts to see how it's impacting their partner.
If you like a good holiday relationship redemption story, than Thawed Out is for you.
I love a great romance story with depth and complexity. This powerful love story of Kiren and Flynn had me from page one. A great book about two men working hard while raising their children, but theyare struggling to deal with the stressors of jobs and kids. Even when going to serve divorce papers, you could tell Kiren still loved Flynn. Expect to feel many emotions in this wonderful read. At the end of the day it is about family, and fighting for your family and your love. It is about not giving up when life gets hard and then gets harder. Perfect for grabing your favorite beverage and spend the afternoon with Kiren and Flynn. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.
bullpoopy, Mr. Moo, carefulleriest, sugarbutt, Ranger, no ketchup hotdogs
Jodie Payne and BA Tortuga have done it again. They've created another MM romance with a lot of angst and balanced with happiness and love. It'll cause the reader heartache and worry. But, at the same time, it will give the warm and fuzzies. It's a delicate balance, but it works well. The story is riveting and satisfying. I really enjoyed reading this book.
Featured are husbands Kiren and Flynn and their children, Jasper and Cass. Jasper, 6 and Cass 3, are typical children. And they're cute. The family negotiate their happiness and love with work, parenting, school, and two jobs. It's a lot!
Nerve racking. Kiren and Flynn are struggling in their marriage. There is almost no communication, they are both struggling to raise their two kids and they both work too hard. Kiren goes to a remote cabin to deliver divorce papers to Flynn just before a storm hits. They are stuck and spend the time talking as they should have been doing. The author gives us a birds' eye view of a relationship crumbling and we bear witness to the repair job. Kiren and Flynn are two sweet men. This is a heart grabber and keeps our minds engaged while our hearts are aflutter. Nicely done. I received an ARC and am voluntrily leaving a review.
These two men started on the verge of divorce and ended up remembering happier times. Flynn was burning the candle at both ends, trying to become a PA. He was losing sleep, not eating and plain grumpy. Kiren was a teacher and tried to raise their two kids and still loved Flynn. This was how both men wanted each other and a better life for themselves and the kids. Sometimes, you don't give up on the ones you love and communicate to make it work. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This story is full of feels. Kiren and Flynn, facing the end of their marriage while still loving each other desperately, just punched me in the gut. Forced to spend time actually talking brings them to a point that they're willing to try again. I loved that every moment from then on they strive to fix things together, to strengthen their relationship and family, to help their children heal. The ending is so full of love and hope for the future that I wish the author would give us a second book. Highly recommended author and series
I loved this book!!!! This is not the typical romance as it's the story of an established couple.... but they are on the verge of divorcing. When Kiren goes to a remote cabin, where Flynn is trying to heal, to give Flynn the divorce papers, they are trapped together due to a snow storm. And they finally talk, and they love each other so much.... but is love enough? I loved the reality of the situations, of the dialogues.... I loved both characters, they are so hurt and vulnerable, I rooted for them. The kids are so sweet. Well, I recommend it.
I was pulled into this right away and I especially loved the premise- which felt original and such a fabulous idea. Christmas is the perfect time to try and save a marriage and I was rooting for these two to figure it out. I thought the authors did an amazing job balancing the intense feelings around the breakdown of their marriage and the very clear abundance of the love Kiren and Flynn have for each other and their kids. I love the coziness of these authors work and this time of year it’s really pretty perfect. Lovely ❤️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book
A quick easy second chance romance. You’re first introduced to the MCs when Kiren drives to a remote cabin Flynn is staying at ready to issue divorce papers. It quickly becomes clear that neither of them want to divorce and 90% of the book is around the ups and downs of a marriage when there’s not enough time, money or communication.
This was a little too angsty to hit my Christmas needs, which is the only time of year I’m in the mood for cheesy low angst romance.
