Fantasies: Thr33 #3

Until the Sunset

Rate this book
The need to lose himself in an anonymous hookup sends Hayden Yune into the arms of Garnett McKaye. Hayden finds comfort and passion, but not the ability to stop wanting his personal driver. Despite attempting to build on the bliss he finds with Garnett, Hayden can’t fight what he feels for Drew.

Drew Sparkes has to watch Hayden with someone else, but that doesn’t mean he’s given up trying to get Hayden underneath him. Soon Drew’s in competition with Garnett for Hayden’s affection. A battle that’s called off when Hayden proclaims he wants them both.

Of course Garnett isn’t interested in anyone but Hayden. Which doesn’t explain why he gets a hard-on pushing Drew’s buttons. Or how Drew’s tongue keeps ending up shoved down Garnett’s throat. While working out how the three of them fit together, they still have to deal with pasts intent on holding them back…at least until the sunset.

A Caribbean transplant, Avril now lives in Stone Mountain, GA., with a tolerant Spousal Equivalent. Together they raise an eccentric daughter who loves reading and school (not so much school anymore). Avril’s earliest memories of reading revolve around discussing plot points of Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys with an equally book-minded mother

Always in love with the written word, Avril finally decided to do the writing in August of ’09 and never looked back. Spicy love scenes, delicious heroes, and wicked women burn up the pages of Avril’s stories, but there’ll always be a happy ending; Av remains a believer of love in all its forms.

Like a 2.5-ish

I liked the idea of these three very different characters coming together, but in the end I wasn't really feeling it. I really enjoyed Garnett, he felt like the most fully fleshed out character and the most "every man" of the group. Hayden I didn't really understand. Well, I understood him, but I didn't get why the other two were so into him. He was the "victim" of the group, was really a dick to Drew for no reason and at different points of the story he giggled, screamed or squealed. Lastly there is Drew, He's the stoic, kinda scary ex-con with a heart of gold. At least I guess so. I didn't get enough of his "end" character to reconcile with his gruff and grunty character from the beginning.

There was fighting, fucking and pushy come-ons that kind of made me uncomfortable. Apparently no doesn't mean no if your names are Drew and Hayden. You can also punch someone and make out with them in the span of 2 minutes and then be in forever love. The ménage scenes were logistically correct but a little hard to follow. Which, to be fair, is common, I can't imagine writing one and keeping it all cohesive. I thought I was following pretty well and then I'd be all, "wait, you can't reach that from there!"

So, a good pass-the-time read, but nothing too earth shattering or new. I like ménage stories where each character fills a void for the others, like puzzle pieces. Until the Sunset had the basics of that, just not the full connection for me. The typos kept pulling me out of the story and could have been part of the reason I didn't connect with the whole thing. Words weren't necessarily spelled incorrectly, but just the wrong word was used. Like a spell check was run but the misspelling was replaced with the wrong word. A character should not "Lick his licks" and there were enough of them to be pretty distracting.

The menage books always stump me at first when I'm trying to figure out how this could possibly work and this book more than most. At first I was thinking although the book was about three men, they would never all be together at one time. Oh how wrong I was. Holy smoking hot hell. I was expecting a fluffy sex read. Nope. It was actually a very nice story with three not so perfect men trying to figure it all out. Very enjoyable read.

DNF 50%

This is supposed to be an MMM romance, but it reads like a love triangle. One of the characters is a widower who still struggles with the death of his husband while the other two men fight over him - one of them getting a bloody nose in the process. Not a bad story, but it didn't grip me, and I'm not a fan of the love triangle - eventually there's some attraction between the other two men, but it comes too late for me.

The first 45% of this book is fire. I'm talking just sexy deliciousness. Garnett is tall, dark and handsome yet kind and patient, and Hayden is broken, looking for physical release, and to be loved and appreciated if only for one night. It's a hookup, people! The added angle of Andrew ramps up the tension. Andrew is Hayden's driver, and the attraction simmers between them but Andrew wants more than Hayden can give. When Andrew picks Hayden up from his night of debauchery with Garnett, they all briefly meet, and the jealoussyyyy - yess yess yesssss.

And then, flop. I can only imagine that the author re-released this book because she got the rights back or something. I never really understand why authors re-release old titles, with a new cover and the same content. Hello, most times the content is what needs changing. This author has improved leaps and bounds from 5 years ago. Why re-release old stuff without tightening things up? This book suffers from the same affliction many of her early books do, and that is the whole instalove business. The pacing just isn't there. The story was much more interesting when we were waiting to see where things would go, than it was after we saw where they went. This story had so much potential!

Drew and Garnett's first kiss came out of nowhere and made no sense at all. Considering what had happened the last time they saw each other, and the argument they'd just had in a coffee shop, this was not a moment you could spin into an 'argument turned sexy moment'. It totally ruined all the build up that had preceded it and, for me, the story never recovered. Everything after that kiss felt slightly ridiculous.

The menage never felt organic. I love a hot menage, but because there was literally zero build up here, the characters just felt like puppets being jerked around on strings. Hayden's description of Drew was not anything that would make someone, much less a therapist, think he was in love with him. At least Garnett could SEE the attraction; that whole session with the therapist sounded crazy. Hayden introducing the idea of dating both men was so awkward that I don't know why they would agree to that (again I love menages and read lots of them). The men being in love after all of two encounters had me rolling my eyes, and because I couldn't get into the plausibility of the whole scenario, the sex felt rote and flat.

My favorite character was Garnett. Drew felt like a roid rage caricature and Hayden....I don't know. The situation with Drew's dad was over the top and hella simplistic all at the same time, and the ending with his parents was...strange, but at least he got closure.

I feel like this book would have benefitted from a revamp to bring it up to the author's current standards, and to catch the typos.

2 stars. One for including a sexy black character, and one for Garnett himself so, yes, all Garnett lol.

Hayden, Garnett and Drew. Three different men, each with a well-developed backstory, though information like their ages and adequate descriptions of the characters would have been better. Basically Hayden is Japanese-American, Garnett is Black and Drew is Caucasian. A nice multicultural menage. Could have easily been a longer book.

Didn’t love this one as much as the other book in this series just because it had WAY more angst & WAY more drama. I hate when characters resist being with someone they obviously love but for no good reason. I got that he was afraid to lose himself but it was sad watching his love slip through his fingers because he wasn’t brave enough to grab it. Luckily he wised up at the very end, so a nice HFN ending.

Avril Ashton Who!!!!!

Just one of the best M/M writers ever or so I’m gathering. This is the second book of hers I’ve read and I’m already looking forward to reading them all.

Loved the storyline and the sexy bedroom scenes. I can’t imagine it’s easy to write a scene with three men, but she did great. It was so hot.

I loved all three men and their back story’s. Great Read.

OMG. The typos in this book. They killed me. I expect one or two in most books, there was 1 per page. I liked the story, though the drama and angst was over the top, but that’s Ms. Ashton’s thing, and she does it well.

This contained a lot more heart than I expected. My only complaint is that it should absolutely have been longer, for more time for the various relationships to develop naturally. However, it has a solid plot arc, well-written characters, and the perfect amount of sexiness.

Until the Sunset is the third book in the Fantasies: Thr33 series by Avril Ashton. This book is part of a series and it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel. I chose this book because I enjoy reading Avril Ashton’s novels.

Hayden Yune spends much of his time running from himself and the memories of his past. He does not know how to change his life and seems at a loss. Hayden filled his life by going to his psychological appointments and not much else. Hayden disrupts his routine when he wants an anonymous hookup.

Garnett McKaye is the anonymous hookup that Hayden finds. Garnett’s problem is even after one time together he has fallen for Hayden. Garnett is easy to like but in the end still very mysterious. We don’t get to know much about him beyond his career.

Drew Sparkes owns a limo service that was passed down to him from his Grandfather much to his father’s dismay. He also works as a driver when needed usually driving Hayden around. Spending time with Hayden has led Drew to fall in love with him. However, Drew does not make a move until Hayden gives him an opening. Drew works hard to change his life and anger management.

The connection between all three men, Hayden, Garnett, and Drew is intense. They make a great trio. I liked seeing how the trio stumbled through making a relationship all the while arguing with each other. However, I loved the dedication they had when they committed to each other. The sex scenes were passionate.

This book is very well written with a believable plot. I found the ending of the story was a bit predictable, it was the journey to the end that was enjoyable. The main and secondary characters were alluring and intriguing. Overall, this was a great book. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. This series seems to get better with each story.

Until the Sunset is the third book in the Fantasies: Thr33 series by Avril Ashton. While this book is part of a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel with ease.

Hayden Yune is at a loss in his life. He is running not just from himself but also him memories of the past. Hayden’s life is filled with very little outings beyond his psychological appointments. He wants to lose himself in an anonymous hookup.

Garnett McKaye is the anonymous hookup that Hayden tried to lose himself in. Garnett’s problem is he has fallen for Hayden even if he did not spend much time with him. While its easy to like Hayden, he was very mysterious we don’t get to know much about him beyond his career.

Drew Sparkes owns a limo service. He also works as a driver when needed. He has been driving Hayden around and has fallen in love with him but does not make a move until Hayden gives him an opening. Drew has a rough life and childhood. It apparent that he had to work to change his way of life and anger.

The connection between all three men, Hayden, Garnett, and Drew is intense. They make a great trio. I liked seeing how the trio stumbled through making a relationship all the while arguing with each other. However, I loved the dedication they had when they committed to each other. The sex scenes were passionate.

This book is very well written. The plot was very believable. While the ending was a bit predictable, it was the journey there that was enjoyable and interesting. The main and secondary characters were appealing and fascinating. Overall, this was a great book. I hope we get to see these characters again in the future.

I always know I can rely on Avril Ashton to provide two things. Violence and steamy, sexy sex scenes. And now she's writing menages, well, it's almost a game of- what can I fill this hole with?
Never a dull moment, that's for sure ;)
