Did you know dairy cows can have quadruplets? They mooo-st certainly can! Thirty-five-year veteran photojournalist Kathy Coatney (specializing in agriculture) pens the extraordinary story of the Four Quart Girls, quadruplet calves born unassisted on a California dairy. The cow guy, Farmer John, introduces second and third-graders to these remarkable creatures with photographs and easy-to-read text about life on a dairy farm for both animals and humans.
The From the Farm to the Table series is designed for second and third grade readers, each book highlighting second grade vocabulary words.

As Kathy Coatney, I bring that same passion for storytelling to deeply emotional, small-town contemporary romance. My novels explore themes of love, community, and the agricultural roots that have shaped my life. Some readers may remember me as Kate Curran, but these days, all my books are published under the Coatney name.
I’m also the author of the nonfiction children’s series From the Farm to the Table and Dad’s Girls, celebrating the journey from farm to fork.

Nice story for kids. At this age it's too young for them to know the real horrors of production line treatment of animals. But this is a sweet story with nice pictures.
“For over 70 years, Farmer John has been a cow guy. Not much surprises him anymore, except for the day quadruplet calves were born on his dairy. Text with photographs of Farmer John and his Four Quart Girls tell the story of this special event.

Exceptional well written educational read for a second or third grade comprehension. Informative and engaging photos help the reader to understand how cows live and the changes over the years as to how people obtain their milk. Great introduction without overwhelming children with interesting facts (quad births) and mathematical lessons (ounces / glasses of milk). Vocab list at the end (underlined throughout the text) as well as resources for creating lesson plans to accompany the dairy unit and additional website resources.
Looking forward to reading additional titles in this noteworthy informational series.
While this is normally not the type of book I read since I don't have children I came upon this one and I really enjoyed it. The book consists of beautiful photos of farm life, specifically the very special birth of four calves from one cow - hence the title. The photos give great close-ups of cows and the language is geared towards 2nd grade children....though even I learned quite a few things!
