Simon Mahler died at 17 from a fall from a mare that he and his mother loved dearly. Simon's father, unable to bear the sight of the horse, destroys the one creature that could have helped his distraught wife heal herself. Nora Mahler must now find the strength that she possessed 20 years earlier.
I did enjoy this book, although found it so frustrating to read as the husband in it was such an arse & nobody was willing to point it out! Probably accurate for the time it was set in but still frustrating at times.
A lovely little story about a country girl who is torn between loving who she wants and who she is expected to love, while grieving the loss of a child.
Missouri in 1947 was not a place for a woman to express grief at her 17 year old son's death. I was horrified at the lack of understanding, and the treatment for "being out of control". Such a page turner though. I like the writing style, different characters relating chapters from their perspective means that everyone gets their voice heard, even those for whom I felt the least sympathy.
