There was a truce on New Year’s Day, 1968, and Third Brigade of 25th Infantry Division used the respite to build a new fire support base near the Cambodian border, in a vast forested area of Viet Nam called War Zone C. They called it Fire Support Base Burt, manned by two infantry battalions and three batteries of artillery. When the truce ended at midnight, January 1, the Communist forces in the area responded by launching a massive assault on the base. Vastly outnumbered, the American soldiers repelled attack after attack and eventually forced the enemy to withdraw after suffering terrible losses. This book describes the buildup of Burt and the long night of deadly action, as seen through the eyes of three fictional young soldiers who lives are forever changed by that battle. The events are real; only the characters are imagined. Experience the vulnerability, the fear, and the everyday heroism of American soldiers just trying to survive an unrelenting ground attack.
Pretty realistic for the life of a grunt. I was in Nam, 1970 - 71 with an aviation unit patching up helicopters. Now 55 years later hanging out with other Nam vets we are all 11 Bravos cuz we all know The Sh!t is gonna hit the fan. We fought Commies in Nam but the really bad Commies are here in America and they have destroyed our country. Today is New Year's Day 2025. The election of Trump has given us a reprieve but the battle for our homeland has just begun. God let us survive for a reason. It took me a long time to figure out what that reason is. I'm with my Nam Vet brothers in the VFW holding the line. We're old, cranky, mean as hell and we will make sure that our brothers who didn't make it home did not die in vain.
I’ve read most of David’s Vietnam books and enjoyed them, but his latest, Ground Attack, was seriously flawed. From page 104 it became difficult to understand what was being said. Apparently they didn’t take the time to proof read and make corrections. It got to a point where I couldn’t understand what was happening.
Really is a good read, had it right. How NCOs kept it on mission and brass showed their arse over stupid crap such as policing that area before feeding the troops.
Very good story. vivid portrait of early viet nam war.
Allin weaves the small details of everyday soldiers into a much larger portrait of the pre Tet war. Excellent character development and portrait of the horrors of war.
Perfectly done. The older I get the more I realize how stupid that war was... But All in does a great job of honoring the sacrifices made by those who answered the call. God bless the infantry. Read this book , Americans.
Most enjoyable book. Almost made you feel like you were there, could smell the stick of Vietnam and feel how some men worked how they would do their first time under fire. I very much look forward to reading more books by this author.
Finish a third book by this author. Just wish the books were number just finished this book and wish I would have read it before the last one I read. Would make it easier to read them in succession
I found this novel to be very detailed and accurate. The army administrative red tape and the combat descriptions were right on. Well written and enjoyable.
