When an FBI Internal Affairs investigation lands the Preternatural Crimes Unit in a bureaucratic spank-fest, it feels like the perfect time for Marnie Baranuik to skip town and lend her expertise to a bear-sized Canadian cop who doesn’t want her help with his case, his love life, or his car stereo. Back in her childhood stomping grounds, Marnie leaps into action, facing an exorcist in skinny jeans, a slap-happy specter, and an old friend up to new tricks. Are ghosts behind a string of unusual deaths? Why didn’t her revenant companion, Lord Harry Dreppenstedt, tell her he had a Combat Butler? Can she survive dinner with her parents? With a shifty man of the cloth offering her soul’s redemption, and a revelation that could change the future of her love life, she has her gloved hands full. She may not make a great first impression, but no one makes a Last Impression quite like Marnie.

Two words: cock-whisperer. Surprisingly, since this IS Marnie's world, it's not what you think.

Entering the world of Marnie Baranuik is a guaranteed good time. Each time I finish a book in this series, I ask myself how Aalto will top this one because they are just that good. And genius that AJ Aalto is, she manages to make each new book better than the previous, which is a tough beast to master. Well, call her the beast masterer, because she does it every time.

In this installment, Marnie finds herself on a case in her home turf of Canada. She invited herself, of course, after receiving a phone call about a missing woman who has a certain tie to Marnie. Luckily (or begrudgingly), she is welcomed by Thag/Longshanks/Constable Patrick Schenk, and together they work to solve a mystery involving ghosts, possible malevolent spirits, and a pervy priest/exorcist who also trains dogs. If that doesn't sound like some weird and fine reading, I don't know what does.

I absolutely adored Longshanks, he was a perfect partner for Marnie this time around. His patience and surprising understanding of Marnie really made them compatible, and with him being so prominent, I barely missed Batten (and his creepy 'stash). Batten stayed behind in Colorado to cultivate his new lip hair and watch Wes and another "guest". I also liked how Marnie being around Schenk really brought out her 'native tongue', according to Harry. Eh. Another highlight was Marnie's entries into her trademark Moleskines. My personal favorite:

"Dear Diary: I don't like Canada anymore. I quit, eh."

Since Chapel never takes her resignation seriously, she has to find something else to quit.
Why not Canada?

Marnie also seems to have mellowed a bit. She is certainly still a riot, but she has a bit more professionalism. Don't get me wrong, she still cusses a blue-streak and goes about investigating in a truly unconventional manner, but she has matured. And sadly, she was less of a pervert. Still a pervert, but not so much of the horndog variety. The pervert award this time around goes to Scarrow, the priest-not priest-maybe priest who trains dogs. He's one freaky fella.

If you're already familiar with this series, this installment doesn't disappoint. It's filled with the trademark humor and foul (yet creative!) language I've grown to expect from Marnie Baranuik. The favored characters also do not disappoint. Harry was fussy, as always, Batten was his usual hunky and dour self. Anyone who hasn't read this series, I suggest starting at the first book and working your way to this one. I strongly recommend each and every book in this series and will happily continue reading for as long as AJ Aalto writes.

**ARC received on behalf of the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

I liked this book more than book II, notably because of the lack of the ever annoying LOVE TRIANGLE that authors seem to think they need to make a compelling story. You don't. Go ahead and stick that notion on the Fuck-That train to Nopesville.

Marnie is investigating, on location. So there is none of that pesky third wheel in this one.

Also, let me introduce Patrick 'Longshanks' Shenk, one of the better characters from this series. His scent, as 'Marnie Baranuiked' in the below quote:

"You smell just like I imagine Wayne Gretzky does. Expensive cologne and maple syrup and hockey pucks."

Have I mentioned I love Hockey? Hockey quotes are always welcome. Also, one of my favourite Chicago players was traded to Columbus this morning. So I'm Saad. But, that's a whole other story.

This book ended with Longshanks and Marnie parting, though I really hope we see his return in future books. He likes to knit, falls in love easily and is super chill.

I was too busy to do updates while reading this, so here are some of the good ones:

" Internal Affairs are boring. Next time you wanna drag my attention away from my espresso, show up with an erection."

"I want to hear no words coming out of your blurt-hole right now, Pornstache McFucknoodle" OITNB shoutout.

"Dear Diary, FUCK fuck fuck fuck fuck! Also, fuck." <- My diary entry, most days.

"Dear diary: I shouldn't speak ill of the dead, but every person I met today, except Harry, was a complete Fuckpocket."

" You cock-juggling thundercunt"

"Sometimes, a cigar is just a penis."

“Cucknugget! Douchetarp! Fucksack! Fanny-ramming, bitch-sucking, chunkass, jizz-flapping shitdong! There. No, wait! Twatwaffle. And cocksplurt!”

Some people like demure girls, the well-mannered wallflowers, those who blend into the background. But I, like lord Guy Harrick Dreppenfeld, find Marnie and her pottymouth so much more interesting. Not only is her life a non-stop cavalcade of bones and boners, she has even more to offer. Like slipper-humping bat brothers, a Revenant who has cut in half by a cuckold husband, cock-whisperers, poltergeists, horny, yet scary demon kings, an equally horny, no to mention ungodly exorcist and drop dead gorgeous police officers at her beck and call. In short, she the perfect companion for the jaded, world weary vampire, as well as the crazy friend you (yeah, YOU!) are missing in your life. And oooh, boy, does she fulfill her role as your crazy friend to perfection.

Of course, with a mouth like that, she’s bound to end up in trouble with the law. How fortunate for Marnie that she can just visit her native Canada, force her way into the investigation of yet another unsuspecting police officer wile she is on probation in the US. Cause evidently they have some scary ghosts up there....

I will readily admit I missed seeing more of Kill-Notch Batten with his sexy jaw clenching, but hey; at least we got some phone sex! (However, as a dachshund owner, I do not approve of Batten’s plans to buy her a new dachshund-sized toy. Get back in the sack, the two of you. Now doesn’t that sound like a much better retirement plan, Marnie?) Missing regular cast aside; officer Longshanks and Harry’s combat Butler; with his refined manners and wry humor, more than made up for the lack of Chapel & co. In fact, I suspect Aalto is incapable of creating an uninteresting character. Because I love them all! They are so quirky, so original, so loveable that I want to start re-reading the book almost as soon as I turn the last page.

As for the overreaching theme of this series. I am still absolutely intrigued as to why Harry sees Marnie as his salvation and why he allowed her grandmother so much more sexual freedom without the jealousy he’s experiencing this time. (Ah, salvation vs. damnation: Did anyone else think Asmodeus was scary as hell in this installment. His “warm you up” comment freaked me out!) But back to the issue of sexual freedom: It appears that Longshanks has worked some miracles, and that absence makes the heart grow fonder. I do hope that means we’ll get to see our two lovebirds hit the sack in the near future. But Harry, dear Harry. He may be incapable of love, but his tenderness, his devotion to Marnie makes ME love him more than ever. I mean; who wouldn’t offer up their neck to a sweet, fussing Revenant like him?(Crazy people, that's who!)

Oh, and one last thing: Just when I thought this book couldn’t get more awesome, we get Star Trek references. Klingons, Ferengis, Jean-Luc Picard. Oh my! What can I say: I do hope this series will continue to live long and prosper for decades to come. It’s just that good!

Incidentally, you were absolutely right, Marnie: “Pule” (a.k.a. Balkan donkey cheese) IS a gross (R-rated) word (in Norwegian,) and in Marnie's case, very (VERY) appropriate. (Bwahaha!) I suspect her blue sense and vitamin pills have combined in some weird way … And now I’m left pondering which one of Marnie's guys I'd like to pule first...

Oh, My God, I’m turning into Marnie & I can't blame it on vitamin pills. *Shakes head in mock horror* ;-P

If there is one thing I love, it's A.J. Aalto's Marnie Baranuik files. They're funny, creepy, and all around awesome. Very few books manage to make me laugh out loud and sniffle with emotion all in one go, but Last Impressions certainly did it.

When I realized Marnie was headed home, I held my breath, dreading pages of awful family drama. Really, I shouldn't have worried. There were definitely a few scenes with Marnie's family, but they weren't gratuitous or drawn-out. Marnie was there to help find a missing person, not go over old familial issues. Things are certainly not perfect with Marnie's relatives, but it was nice to see her take grown-up steps toward mending some bridges. You know people are utterly unreasonable when they make Marnie seem responsible and mature in comparison. As we know from previous books, Marnie's fuck-up of a father slacked off his whole life, just assuming Harry's fortune would be his and solve the family's money problems. And, as we know from previous books, that's not what happened and Marnie's shitty family never forgave her for something that wasn't her fault. And while it shouldn't surprise me that someone would cut off their own sister or daughter over money, it does. And it also makes me really angry. So I'm glad the scenes with her family were mercifully short. Marnie handled their maltreatment with a degree of composure I would never have, which is probably why I get so frustrated when she acts like a total nutjob in front of her superiors. Marnie has the capacity to be this great asset to the F.B.I, and then she goes and swears her head off in official reports. Oh well, it's why we love her.

The book wasn't as gory as the last two books. And really, after the zombie birth-turned-snack incident in the last one, I am grateful. It seems like Marnie is finally getting her investigative feet under her. While her trademark humor was still with her, it was less over-the-top than past books. I appreciated it, because if Marnie wants to make a career doing this sort of work she needs people to trust her to get the job done. Marnie will never be a professional, but there was ever-so-slightly more maturity and I enjoyed it. Sometimes her ridiculous mannerisms can get on my nerves, funny as they are.

Speaking of people, my one complaint about the whole book was the distinct lack of my favorite Special Agent, Mark Batten. He did not come to Canada with Marnie, which had me sorely disappointed. While they stayed in contact throughout the book, Marnie was pretty preoccupied with her case and her determination to not break anti-fraternization rules. And there were definitely some interruptions that had me gritting my teeth in irritation. I missed the sizzling tension that always vibrates between the two when they're together. Okay, I also have a massive literary crush on Batten, which certainly contributed to my disappointment. But really, who doesn't?

To make up for it there was plenty of Harry time and two new great characters in the form of Harry's "combat butler" Mr Merritt and the local detective Mark Schenk. Merritt was great with his quiet, unassuming humor. You'd think that someone so dignified and used to catering to wealthy aristocrats would be contemptuous of someone as...unrefined...as Marnie. It was a pleasant surprised to see that he was nothing but polite and respectful, and Marnie developed an affectionate relationship with him. Schenk also grew on me quickly, to the point where I didn't missed Batten that much. He didn't greet Marnie with the aggressive skepticism you'd expect from a cop, and actually seemed to appreciate her input. They bantered almost as much as Marnie and Batten, but without the innuendo.

As we all know, a Marnie book isn't complete with some form of sexual interest. In this case, it was an exorcist by the last name of Scarrow. His initial description made him seem rather unattractive to me, someone skinny and gaunt, and throughout the book I couldn't shake that initial impression. Suffice it to say that Marnie's attraction to him baffled me, and the ick factor only increased when his former occupation was revealed.

The plot of the book was really interesting, because it wasn't exactly a mystery. For once it was Marnie being convinced to see the truth, instead of being the one doing the convincing. It made for some interesting times as Marnie tagged along with detective Schenk. I'm reluctant to say more about the baddie, in case it gives away too much of the plot.

To sum it all up, this book was fabulous. I was so sad when I realized it was over, and I can't wait for the next one!

4.5, another great read

Ms. Aalto is consistent if nothing else. I find that I could cut and paste my review of this series' previous two books here and have them make perfect sense and be wholly accurate. But what fun would that be? The points may be the same, but I'll make them again.

I love Marnie—Marnie's foul mouth, Marnie's lust crazed mind, Marnie's sarcasm, Marnie's need to do the right thing, Marnie's selfish idiosyncrasies, Marnie's ability to always come out on top, Marnie's amazing ability to thrive in and on utter chaos, Marnie's relationship with Harry (who is also fabulous). I love all of this. Every time I read one of the Marnie Baranuik Files I simply role with laughter. I can't help it.

It's all over the top. Undeniably, it is. Marnie takes time to make smart aleck comments on the brink of certain death, she destroys more personal property than you can shake a stick at, she's brash and has no mental-to-verbal filter. No one could really survive in such a state. You have to accept that as part of the fun though. And I do.

The only real complaint I've ever had, still have, and find it's getting stronger with every book of the series I read, is the way Marnie is infantalized by the men in her life. They treat her like a favoured child and she in turn behaves like one—saying anything she likes with no regard for decorum, using ridiculously juvenile words (in and amongst all of her creative cursing), immaturely taunting people and circumstances, wearing children's accoutrements, sulking, blowing raspberries at people, throwing tantrums, allowing the men (grownups) to talk over, around and about her in incredibly condescending ways (even if it is meant to be teasing), etc. In small doses, as in the first book, it was tolerable. But I find it's starting to grate.

But honestly, that's my only real issue with the book/series and it's one I'm more than willing to put up with for the rest of the enjoyment I get from it/them. Looking forward to more.

I really enjoyed this story. Now we get to meet ghosts, and it's nice to see a UF that doesn't solely rely on weres and vamps and witches. This has some real shivers in it, and the word building is amazing - I've never been in snow, but I could feel that biting cold! It was an excellent read. Also, interestingly, not everyone is safe in these stories -where you think the author is introducing a new character that might stay - maybe not ;-) Loved Schenk, he was a perfect sidekick for Marnie. I hope we see more of him later. As always,I love the one-liners and snark.

This book was charming and hilarious from cover to cover. I brought this book camping with me and found myself stopping to read passages aloud that had my entire group laughing out loud.

I love to support local authors, and this one makes it so easy. I grew up and still live in Hamilton, ON and the closest I have ever come to reading about home is Toronto. It was neat to read about the Niagara/Hamilton area and recognise road names and landmarks.

Although I admire Marnie’s independence from Harry I really do miss him when he’s not around. I also need more Combat Butler in my life. Sweet old “Pop Pop”!

... and can I just say.... WHAT AND ENDING!!!

Last Impressions is the third installment in the Marnie Baranuik Files series and it's a winner just as the first and second installments are.

Aalto's writing voice is humorous, sassy, witty and descriptive and yeah, there's quite a bit of wonderfully colorful profanity sprinkled throughout--most of which is provided by Marnie, the heroine. She can turn a cuss-phrase like nobody's business and it never fails to crack me up.

Within the pages of Last Impressions, you'll be treated to characters such as an old-school gentlemanly Revenant (Vampire), a hard-assed FBI agent who is the lust of Marnie's loins, mentions of a bunny-slipper-humping vampire bat, ghosts, a cock whisperer, a perverted ex-priest/exorcist, a knitting Canadian cop, a combat butler and Marnie's googly-eyed frog hat.

One scene in Last Impressions made me sleep with a light on. Seriously. Reading about dead people water is scary at night.

In summation, Last Impressions and the rest of the Marnie Baranuik Files urban fantasy series, is rife with witty banter, spooky to downright scary scenes, lust, fantastic world-building, lots of humor, great plotting and vivid description. If you're not reading The Marnie Baranuik Files, you are missing out on some good shit!

AWESOME!!! I'm trying not to gush how much I loved this one! The perfect blend of ...well, everything!! Other reviewers have summed it up nicely and better than I can. Just want to add my highest praise to the pile. I LOVED IT!!! The implications are intriguing so I can't wait to read the next, and hopefully get a big dose of Kill-Notch with Marnie & Harry as they eek out their future!! Awesome stuff!!!!!!

I would read this author's grocery list. Honestly. I love this series (it is in competition with my love for the fever series) and the style of writing is phenomenal. I love the characters. I love my bad ass heroine. I love the witty conversations. I love the fact that I have no clue what is going to happen. I just love this series to a disgusting degree and I'm not sorry about it. I got to read the series from net galley, but I would have paid SO MUCH to have read them if I hadn't.

Satisfying, challenging, infuriating, amusing, annoying

I suppose those words could describe Marnie, the heroine of the Marnie Balanuik Files series. She's manic and aggravating, she swears all the time and goes off less than half cocked, she's hard headed and self absorbed, but she means well and does have good intentions. Mostly.

This was a pivotal book for me as I hadn't made up my mind about Marnie. I appreciate an eccentric heroine, like Charley Davidson in the Darynda Jones books, and I can be amused by excessive and creative swearing and sexual references. But in books one and two it was *almost* too much, even for me.

That's why I was glad to see some character growth in Marnie and her relationships. It was nice to get a little break from Harry's affectations. I do love him, but his constant use of words my kindle dictionary and Wikipedia couldn't define grew frustrating. He might as well be speaking a foreign language. I get that he's very old, but to survive so long, you'd think he'd learn to speak the current vernacular.

Canadian Constable Schenk was a great foil for Marnie; steady, understated, stalwart, he balanced her flightiness well. I wouldn't mind seeing more of him and hope he finds some happiness.

On the minus side, supposed best friend Ellie was so not a best friend. She wasn't even a good friend. All the time Marnie was there, did they even do lunch? They hadn't seen each other for four years! I totally could have done without her.

I think I will go on to book four. I'm interested to see where Marnie and Harry go next. However, I'm not sure this story is for everyone. You'd have to have a high tolerance for some fairly unconventional living arrangements and the pretty relentless swearing. And rather raunchy sex references. I'm okay with it; not sure everyone else would be.

Once again, like the others in this series, this book has cracked me up like no other! This is by far one of my favorite series just for that reason! Marnie is so funny and the commentary that runs thru her mind and out her mouth makes for a laugh out loud story every time! I said it before and I’ll say it again, the very creative phrases she comes up with are AWESOME!! i.e. ~ “Holy crispy crapsicles.” and “Marcel Mo-Fo, the world’s hunkiest, most jerktastic mime.” and “cock-witted jackass” and one of my personal favorites “Well, Boogernuggets.” which I have recently started using to the delight of my children who laugh every time I say it!! LOL! There are so many more, but I don’t have room to post them all and I don’t want to spoil the funniness for you when you read it the first time!!
I liked that in this book we see a little more mellow and somewhat more vulnerable Marnie. I think it helped me to be able to understand her better. The team up with “Longshanks” was great! He and Marnie were a perfect working together fit in this book!
All in all, this is a wonderful, funny story that was as good if not better than the previous ones. I absolutely can not wait for the next in the series and was so excited to be able to get the ARC to read and review for all of you!! I will have to thank Aalto: I had no idea that reading about ghosts terrified me until I read this book. Zombies? Ghouls? Vampires – excuse me – Revenants? Excessive Gore? Apparently I can handle all that without a single nightmare, but throw in some spooky events and things moving by themselves and I’m reduced to Disney cartoons at a high volume in my hotel room.

Mild terror aside, it’s a great tribute to Aalto’s skill as a story-teller that I was engaged in the book enough that I was spooked. In this installment, we see a different side of Marnie. Faced with her family and back in Canada, she is trying to grow up (a little) and think about others more. Perhaps she will even gain a little (begrudging) courage.

This was a fantastic continuation of the Marnie Baranuik files with plenty laugh out loud moments and adventure.

Warning: Contains violence, sexual content and gave me nightmares about evil grandma ghosts.

Who should read it? Folks looking for a fun continuation to the series!

This series must be read in order. This is the third book in the series.

After being notified of the suspension of the FBI's Denver branch of the PCU Dr. Marnie Baranuk gets a call from a constable in Niagara. A young woman has gone missing and had Marnie's card in her purse though they have never met. Taking advantage of her forced vacation Marnie travels home to Canada to assist in the investigation while sexy Special Agent Mark Batten takes up residence in her home and vamp sits. Little does she know this case may turn all she thought she knew about ghosts and poltergeists on its ear and no matter how hard she trys Harry won't let her avoid her family forever.

This is another great story filled with sass, snark and paranormal blunders. I can't wait till the next book comes out!

Without fail, AJ Aalto delivered a hilarious and intriguing follow-up with Last Impressions. From the beginning AJ had me laughing at the ridiculousness of Marnie's antics, secretly jotting down her inventive expletives for later use, and glued me to every subsequent page with Marnie in a mission even Marnie didn't think was plausible. With a brush of danger, science-y stuff I understood without feeling stupid, paranormal elements seen on the small screen and would love to try in real life (if only to test out my own balsyness), family dramas that drown mine in complications, and even a shot of too-much-love gifts the longest-lasting gifts, the only thing I can ask more of, is another dose of Marnie ASAP.

Warning!! Although Marnie promises to swear less in this latest installment, foul language, sex, violence, dead things, and hilarity are present in the normal Baranuik amounts. These books are NOT for the easily offended! Thank goodness I am not one of them because I adore Marnie.

I would have posted more hysterical status updates, but I was laughing too hard and did not want to stop reading to post. Although I missed some of the usual characters, Patrick and the Combat Butler were absolute delights. The background story lines advanced in some unexpected and intriguing ways, with readers finally getting a glimpse of Marnie's severely dysfunctional family.

I LOVE THESE BOOKS!!!

What can I say? Aalto never disappoints when she puts pen to paper. I absolutely love Marnie. She's witty, she has inventive ways to curse and is an utterly ridiculous woman. Still, I like her because she isn't flailing around waiting to be rescued. She makes clusterfuck-worthy mistakes as she solves her cases but in the end she handles business.

Aalto is one of my favorite authors who can make me laugh to the point of tears. I just have to say, there'd better be another one. Maybe with some kinky Kill-Notch sex.

I felt really sad towards the end because of what happens but I still absolutely loved this book just as much as the others abd I absolutely cannot wait for the next one. I'm pretty sure I heard it was in progress and I'm too excited for it lol I already wanna jump right into the next one but there isn't one and it makes me sad. On another note I have added so many new swears to my vocabulary. I laughed to tears at a lot of things in this book just like the others. Ah I just cannot wait for the next book I wanna read it so bad. XD

Marnie is one of my favorite characters. She is not afraid to make fun of serious situations or herself. Her inventive curse words ( like twatwaffle) are especially amusing. Since the FBI is investigating her unit, she had time to go home to help solve a murder linked to the supernatural. While there, she meets a defrocked exorcist and a ghost who breaks all the rules. But her hardest task is visiting her dysfunctional family. Things are getting serious and she may not make it. A really fun read and an intriguing storyline.

Go buy this series right now. I promise you won't regret it.

So well written. If you've had a trying day and you just wanna
snuggle up in a nice comfy chair with your fluffies on and a cuppa or a tipple in hand, you couldn't ask for a better companion ( Or maybe you could ) ! These books have everything you need to on a roller coaster ride with Marnie and the rest of the people that get sucked into her nonsensical and scary life. Extremely funny yet strangely familiar attitudes and thoughts add to the hilarity. You won't regret buying this series.

In this installment Marnie is on administrative leave from the PCU pending review of the shenanigans from the second book. She heads to her home town in Canada to horn in on a missing persons case that ends up bringing her into the sites of a . Love the snark and the raucous humor. I just wish we could move the relationship issues along. It's getting old dragging them out like this.

I seriously love this series!! I'm NOT a fan of supernatural series, but the gallows humor this author uses makes me laugh until I cry. The scenes that really should be the scariest or most gory are really the funniest because of the way the main character handles them. Note: be cautious of reading late at night because anyone attempting to sleep in the same room as you will not be amused by your spontaneous bursts of laughter!

I enjoyed this latest volume in the antics of Marnie Baranuik, one unusual paranormal investigator. I did miss having more interactions between Marnie and Harry and Marnie and Batten, but I really liked Schenk. He's a good foil for Marnie, and they formed a genuine bond of friendship. Fans of this series should enjoy it!

I've loved this series from the first one, it's fun, flirty, nuts at times but oh so enjoyable. I'm still impatiently waiting for a Marnie/Mark Batten intense love affair, like the bits in the first one--though I'm pretty sure it's more likely to be laugh out loud comedy than anything.

I'll definitely buy the next book at some point.

The third full-length story featuring the absolutely lovable anti-heroine Marnie Baranuik takes her to Canada to battle an angry poltergeist. As in the previous stories in this series the writing is skillful, riveting, funny and the characters are deeply human (even the non-human ones). Can't wait for the next story to come out!

Ok, so I love this book. I would totally be friends with Marnie, the main character. Not only does she think Vampire is a dirty word, live with a Reverent, swear like a sailor, and is a total smart ass, but she is strong and in control. This story is funny, irreverent, and a great mystery.

I give this book 5 clouds out of 5.
