This was an entertaining read for sure, but I felt that parts of the story unfolded too slowly. Most of us came in with Tycen’s book in mind, so starting at this point didn’t quite make sense. We already knew they were involved by the end of that book, so revisiting their initial interactions felt like a detour. I understand that this is meant to be a standalone, but if you're going to keep referencing a couple from a previous story, it feels more like a series.
I rated this a two-star read after 35% in because we, the readers, are still left to assume what happened to Puma. Sure, context clues suggest that her stepdad harmed her, but just come out and say it already! It was frustrating to read, especially when Puma acted strangely around Rayshawn, and we didn’t fully understand why. Until further down the line and instead of saying something about it she just started moving weird with Fatima. Essentially, these predators entered a vulnerable person's life and inflicted harm. In the early stages of a book, I’m fine with foreshadowing and hints, but if you introduce another problem, the first one needs to be clarified.
To me, this book didn’t handle the heavy topics very well. I’m glad Puma’s mom redeemed herself, but it didn’t make sense that Puma had to have a mental breakdown for her mother to get the truth. Like, THIS IS YOUR CHILD! You’re more worried about the club than figuring out why she hates you? Also, Rayshawn, a character we barely know, really only had 2-3 pages of appearance, yet he’s suddenly a super-obsessed stalker? Sorry, Kami, but it would have been better to give us a flashback of their relationship or situations where he was being weird. She basically painted him as the bastard half-brother who wanted everything his brothers had, including Puma. All we were shown were the bad vibes at the little BBQ, him being a freaky nasty frog and finally then the end-of-life criminal monologue. Where was the buildup and pacing for that?
And then there’s the ghost ex with a child by his best friend? That felt unnecessary. The guy is dead; Puma was already deeply involved with Murk. His turning out to be a loser didn’t add anything worthwhile.
