In book one of the Bird Girl Witches series, the mystical realm of The Korvids is being terrorized by a dark force, and a young, psychic girl may be the only one who can stop it.
Arabel Spade is just 17 years old, but holds the gift of extraordinary supernatural abilities. When a series of brutal murders rock her hometown, she is determined to use her powers to solve the crimes and protect her people.
But tracking the killer puts her on a collision course with the sinister Dorojenja - evil sorcerers intent on putting an end to her investigation, if not her life. As the bodies pile up, Arabel must navigate a web of secrets, betray her cold-hearted grandmother's wishes, and forge alliances with mysterious magical factions like the Travelers.
Join Arabel's epic journey of magic, danger, and self-discovery, as she battles for the ultimate fate of The Korvids.
Isn’t this cover stunning?! And what an interesting premise! Essentially a witch detective. I always love a psychic connection, portrayed in this book as how her and Eli spoke to each other. And her crow familiar! Ira the crow, and the Elemental were two of my favorite aspects of this book. What a magical place. But there is darkness in this land, and Arabel is trying to solve the supernatural murders occurring. There is a familial link, and as she tries to find the murderer, she also starts uncovering stuff of her family’s past. There was a lot of action towards the end, basically to the last page. I was surprised when it said 99% and stuff was still happening, I was like how are we ending this?! Lol
Thank you R&R Book Tours for having me on the tour and for the copy for review!
An interesting YA fantasy that was intriguing and sweet. Blended with romance and history this story takes off running from the start and doesn’t let off even at the end.
I liked the various magics and the mystery behind the crimes. There was also past family histories that play a part in things as well.
Some tropes to enjoy in here are; magic, crime solving, good vs evil, sweet romance, animal familiars, and more.
Autumn Death, the first book in the Bird Girl Witches series, is delightful. This is a fun gothic fantasy with just the most gorgeous cover. I absolutely adore the premise of witches solving murders and uncovering dark secrets. It has slowly ramping tension and mystery with a unique magic system and world. Arabel is a psychic outcast with extraordinary powers. She partners with Eli, a Traveler, to unravel a string of chilling murders in her hometown.
L.A. Brown's writing style is vivid, drawing you into the richly imagined world of The Korvids. The world-building is one of the book’s highlights. Arabel is a compelling protagonist, grappling with the isolation her abilities bring and her determination to protect her people despite the odds. Eli’s role as a supportive friend-turned-love interest is sweet. Their relationship blossoms into a tender connection and I love how the magic mingles between them. Though the romance leans toward instant-love, the fated aspect actually works super well here. While their relationship blossoms into a tender connection, some readers may find themselves wishing for a slower build.
The crow familiar adds charm and intrigue, while the genetic, inheritance-based magic system brings a fresh twist to the genre. The mystery of the murders and tension with the sinister forces keep the stakes pretty high and the plot moves fast. However, while the central characters shine, not all of the supporting cast feels fully fleshed out to me.
Overall, Autumn Death is a moody and atmospheric start to a promising series. With gothic vibes, a strong lead character, and a unique take on magic, it’s a great pick for fans of YA fantasy. And yes—the cover is as stunning as the story within!
Thanks so much to the author and R&R Booktours for the complimentary copy and the opportunity to read and review. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
Autumn Death by L.A. Brown is a YA dark fantasy teeming with the supernatural, secrets, mysteries, murder, and the cutest romance you could ever want in a book! Diving right into the mystical realm of The Korvids we meet Arabel Spade, the FMC, who is often seen as an outcast in her hometown due to her supernatural abilities. But her abilities become the main asset when a string of murders comes about, determined to solve the mystery behind these murders Arabel finds an unlikely ally and romantic partner in Eli Frankel who is part of the mysterious magical faction called the Travelers.
Brown’s writing style in her novel is so captivating and enchanting you won’t want to put it down, the story is very fast-paced and works really well with the plot. I loved seeing Arabel and Eli’s romance bloom from friends to lovers and all of the characters are very well fleshed out the world of The Korvids is very interesting and has a gothic setting which I enjoyed immensely. And I absolutely loved how much character was put into Arabel’s familiar, Ira, that little crow was one of my favorite parts of the story.
Overall, I would recommend Autumn Death to readers who like the supernatural, ancient secrets, coming of age, and a high-stakes setting in their books!
Arabel is a young woman with psychic abilities, by being able to see a lot of aura colors and being able to telepath with others. The beginning starts by jumping into a murder that has happened when the Night of Lost Souls festival begins. Arable isn’t a lone, she has great friends to help her out; a Traveler, Eli and a crow, Ira. What I loved so much about this book is that Arabel is believed to be a strong witch and doesn’t get questioned when she can talk to others via telepathic or sees spirits, but her grandmother chastasied her for being out with Eli and it made her feel very young hahaha. Another favorite character of mine was Elemental, he was comical.
This was a great YA fantasy-mystery where we lead a witch as she tries to uncover recent murders. I loved Arabel’s crow companion and their cute relationship. The mystery surrounding the murders pulled me in and kept my attention, the paranormal was captivating. Overall, this is a great read!
Is this not the most stunning cover? Autumn Death is the first book in the Bird Girl Witches Series where four teen witches must destroy an ancient evil to fulfill their destiny and avert a treacherous curse.
Autumn Death is a YA witchy, dark magical realism fantasy where Arabel Spade is a young witch that is determined to use her gifts to find a murderer of three girls. Arabel ends up uncovering an ancient evil along with dark family secrets and suddelnly it's her life that is at risk.
I just loved the characters! Arabel is brave, smart, and fiesty. She fights hard to protect the innocent and uncover the truth of the evil force invading The Korvids. Ira is Arabel's loyal familiar and his personality is everything! One of my favorite things to do is get lost in a magical realism book and this book did that! The atomspheric gothic mood and the lyrical prose was captivating througout the entire book.

"Your heart is my home."⠀ ⠀ L. A. Brown, Autumn Death⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Autumn Death (Bird Girl Witches Book 1) by L.A. Brown is a magical dark fantasy YA novel that gave me Enola Holmes + Six of Crows vibes. This five star read has everything I love in a fantasy; Romance. Magic. Murder. Mystery. And, of course, an epic showdown of good versus evil!⠀ ⠀ The main character, Arabel, is a young witch with psychic abilities and an adorable crow familiar. She partners with a stable hand, Eli (who also has magical abilities) to help solve a string of strange murders in The Korvids. They have a slow burn romance that is very satisfying and sweet. It is fun to see them flirt, explore, and work together against the evil entity that is terrorizing their home. ⠀ ⠀ I love the world building of this story! The town is split into districts with corvid names like Ravenswood Glen and Magpie Moor and has a medieval feel with taverns, inns, and caravans. The magic system is unique and relies heavily on physic abilities and astral planes. I enjoyed learning about all of the supernatural aspects of Arabel's world and how they connected her to different characters. ⠀ ⠀ My favorite character was Ira the crow! He is so clever and takes very good care of Arabel. His personality shines through with each caw and coo and he is instrumental in the fight against the evil sorcerers. He also has an amazing murder of corvid friends who assist throughout the book!
I was so pleasantly surprised by this YA witchy fantasy read! It was excellent all around. The characters were quirky and vibrant, so easy to fall in love with 💕 Autumn Death is a beautifully written mystery where the outcast FMC, Arabel, uses her supernatural abilities to help solve a string of kidnappings and murder. This read was fast paced from start to finish..I enjoyed the ride 💨
Arabel and Eli have a tender, earnest love that blooms beautifully throughout the story. I loved the romance that was sprinkled along with the mystery. Also, I LOVED Ira the crow 🐦⬛ he is a great addition to the gang and becomes a fierce and loyal friend.
Autumn Death is a must read if you enjoy.. 🐦⬛ Coming of Age 🧡 Found Family 🐦⬛ First Love 🧡 Magical Secrets 🐦⬛ High Stakes 〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️
Autumn Death follows 17 year old Arabel, a truly remarkable witch, as she tries to uncover who is murdering young women in her hometown.
4.5 ⭐️ This was an almost perfect YA witchy read for me. Arabel is my favourite type of FMC; she is clever, brave, and a little stubborn. She may only be 17, but she is wise beyond her years.
I spent good chunks of this book suspicious of EVERYONE (even Eli, the handsome MMC), like an itch you just can't scratch because it just keeps moving!! You are propelled forward by the fast pace of this story. It was hard to put the book down; I read it in 2 sittings.
In other places, you can feel the warmth and adoration between the characters, like a hot cup of fresh honey, jasmine, and mint tea. There is a wonderful love story within this book; not enemies to lovers or a slow burn but uncomplicated, innocent, and pure. No spice. Closed door at most.
If you enjoyed The Crimson Moth/Heartless Hunter, this book is for you. Similar vibes, no blood, and just possibly a better story... I said what I said 🤷🏻♀️
Autumn Death by L.A. Brown is an enthralling, gothic fantasy with warm and sweet romance, murder-mystery, witches and unique magic all combined into a fantastic and enchanting novel. Truly a perfect and engaging start to the Bird Girl Witches series.
With a powerful psychic witch as our FMC, Arabel, and her traveler counterpart MMC, Eli, we get to embark with them on their mission to solve mysterious murders happening in her hometown.
The author uses poetic and descriptive writing that allows for you to completely immerse yourself in the detailed world building of the Korvids. Folks with hyperphantasia like myself will truly appreciate the writing in this one!
With such a strong and balanced FMC, unique plot line, and that sweet, warming romance between the MC’s, this book is truly perfect for fans of classic YA fantasy, especially if you’re a fan of gothic aesthetics, murder-mysteries, and supernatural entities!
Thank you L.A Brown and R&R Book Tours for the reader copy and opportunity to review this book!
Isn’t this cover captivating? Such a gorgeous portrayal of main character Arabel and her familiar 🐦⬛. I knew when I saw this cover and read the blurb that I needed to read this story and it did not disappoint! L.A. Brown’s prose is elegant and detailed as she narrates a murder mystery within a tangled web of secrets from the past that connects to the present with opposing magical forces at play. Arabel is at the center of it all and tries to get to the bottom of it all with her wits, her powers, and her found family.

Well this was a book lol and I don’t have much else to say other than that 😅
Let’s say some positives first: the romance in this book was very YA as in it was very sweet and cute and the main characters were very much young and in love. Being a romantasy reader I feel like I have trust issues so I was waiting for the other shoe to drop on the MMC and him actually be a bad guy because of how sweet he was 😂 but alas he was actually a really good guy. I also thought the magic system was interesting with the psychics and the travelers and how they were very much a community of magic weilders in this town. I also like the atmosphere the book gave off, it felt a little dark but also whimsical and mysterious.
Not so positives: I feel like there was little explanation of the world and said magic system. We jumped into the plot immediately, but it almost felt like the reader should already know what’s going on even though there was no explanation. Even with this being a YA book the dialogue did seem very young and immature and the amount of exclamation marks was overwhelming 😅. I also do think the romance was immediate and it was not realistic in that I don’t feel like the characters got to know each other too well and it def was an insta love book (which I just personally prefer a slow burn so to each their own). I also felt like the plot felt drawn out at times and repetitive. There would be a dream, then an attack, and then our FMC would basically keep coming around to the same type of conclusion just for it to all repeat again. It just felt like a lot of filler most of the time. The ending was also rushed imo and I don’t feel like we got a great conclusion with our main characters, but maybe they will be mentioned in the next book I’m not sure??
Overall it was an alright read for me, but just not my cup of tea
Interesting, dark YA fantasy with supernatural elements, mysteries, secrets, and murders.
The FMC, Arabel Spade, is an outsider in her hometown because of her supernatural abilities. But her abilities come in handy when she’s helping to solve a string of mysterious murders.
The pacing of the book was fast but never rushed, and the writing was captivating. The friends-to-lovers storyline between Arabel and Eli was well written, and there were some really cute moments between them.
If you enjoy mysterious, supernatural, dark YA fantasy with coming-of-age themes, great characters, and interesting, well written storyline, I highly recommend checking this book out!
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
Beautiful YA gothic fantasy romance. I really enjoyed the prose of this story. I thought it was so elegantly written and felt like I was pulled into a classic Victorian era. I am huge on animal familiars and absolutely love korvids, I adored the familiar, Ira!
The romance between the two main characters is so pure and sweet; I cherish their relationship. I also found their particular magic beautiful and love how they work together.
I was fully prepared for this book to end on a cliff-hanger because there is a ton of action near the end, however, it wraps up nicely but sets the scene for the next in the series.
The cover of Autumn Death is absolutely stunning. This YA gothic fantasy blends romance, mystery, and murder, all centered around our 17-year-old FMC, Arabel. With her mindreading and psychic abilities, Arabel is determined to uncover the truth behind a string of murders in her hometown. But her gifts reveal that these murders are far from straightforward, leading her into a deeper and darker mystery.
The gothic setting was a highlight for me, and I appreciated the intricate language the author used to immerse readers in the world of the Bird Girl Witches. However, I struggled to follow the numerous leads and plotlines. The story often felt choppy, lacking a cohesive flow, and instead of becoming more engrossed as the book progressed, I found myself growing more confused.
That said, there are many elements I enjoyed individually—the atmosphere, the concept, and the unique abilities of the protagonist—but as a whole, the story didn’t fully come together for me.
I’m giving this book 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4 for this review) due to its intriguing premise and the lush, gothic world it creates.
Arabel’s story is one involving an epic quest to solve the tragic deaths that have been happening in her hometown. She is thrown into a world of mysterious magical factions while being psychic herself. She must find a way to stop the dark magic while navigating romance and self-discovery.
Autumn Death was an intriguing, action-packed YA book. I really enjoyed so many elements of this story. It had magic, it had romance, and it even had crime solving throughout the entirety of the novel. There were aspects to the story that kept your attention because there are so many key pieces to this book. I am excited for the next book and can’t wait to see where this story goes.
This book had me at supernatural and obviously forbidden love will suck me in the story is well written and just reading about this interesting world she’s created is fantastic and I can’t wait for more a magical detective will always have me coming back for more
This is a great, witchy read for YA and young at heart readers. It's low spice/no spice, but still has the tension from a romantic perspective. We follow along as the travelers and Arabel search for the reason women are going missing and passing away. As the story progresses we meet several characters that will leave you wondering if the love interest or the bad guy is going to change....
This book blends witches, a gripping murder mystery, and a sweet YA romance, and paints it all against an eerie/gothic backdrop.
Arabel, our fmc, is anything but ordinary. With a connection to the supernatural, she possesses abilities that mark her as an outcast. Her hope is to tap into her gifts to help solve the dark murder mystery plaguing her town.
With the encouragement of her best friend, she teams up with Eli, a local traveler boy her age. The two of them, along with her crow familiar, Ira, uncover a web of secrets they never would have dreamed possible.
This is perfect for fans of:
🐦⬛YA fantasy 🐦⬛Animal familiars 🐦⬛Intriguing mystery 🐦⬛Gothic vibes 🐦⬛Super sweet romance 🐦⬛Spirits and seances 🐦⬛Beautiful female friendship
4.5 stars This is a very fast-paced YA witchy murder mystery novel filled with magic and a happy ending. Eli and Arabel's relationship is so sweet and they way they talk to each other is beautiful. This is written in 3rd person, which I don't usually like, but it works with this book. Arabel's crow familiar is adorable. Great world building and lyrical prose.
🧙♀️✨ Witches, murder, and a psychic badass—oh my! ✨🖤 Autumn Death by L.A. Brown is the YA dark fantasy you didn’t know you needed but will now be obsessed with.
Witches solving murders? A dark, atmospheric world filled with ancient secrets? A forbidden romance with fated vibes? SIGN ME UP.
Arabel Spade is seventeen, psychic, and way too busy solving supernatural murders to care about fitting in. But when bodies start dropping in her eerie hometown, she teams up with Eli, a swoony Traveler with secrets of his own.
Together, they unravel dark family legacies, dodge evil sorcerers, and piece together a crime that’s more tangled than a witch’s spellbook.
The gothic vibes? Immaculate. The magic system? So unique. The romance? Adorable, fated, and just the right amount of tension. And Ira the crow? Stealing the show, obviously.
💀🔮 TROPE TIME! 🔮💀 ✔ The Outsider – Arabel has never fit in, and honestly? It’s everyone else’s loss. ✔ Murder Mystery with Magic – Who needs a detective when you have spells? ✔ Forbidden Love – A witch and a Traveler? The tension is real. ✔ Fated Mates – Destiny ships it, and so do I. ✔ Creepy Gothic Setting – Shadows lurk, secrets whisper, and danger looms. ✔ Ancient Family Secrets – What’s buried in the past never stays hidden. ✔ Body-Switching & Possession – Because one soul per body is too basic. ✔ Found Family – When your real family is a disaster, you build your own. ✔ Powerful Artifacts – Some magical objects should stay lost. ✔ Training Sequences – Because magic doesn’t just happen, okay?

This coming-of-age high stakes YA fantasy is full of gothic creepy settings, found family, fated mates, unique magic systems, witches, ancient secrets, murder and mystery with a sprinkling of body switching. Not to mention… have you seen this cover, GEORGOUS!
This story follows Arabel, a 17-year-old FMC who has psychic and supernatural abilities but struggles with them as they are at war with her hopes for normality. When the body of a murdered woman is found on the Night of Lost Souls festival, our FMC feel drawn to it and she is determined to help in the only way she knows how. Then comes Eli, a wonderer and magical Traveler with a secreted past. Together they set out to discover the truth behind what is happening, despite the dangers of an unyielding evil that hides in the shadows and the spooks that seem to always be in the way.
I love the emotions this story evokes and the journey of self-discovery for Arabel. The character development is done in a wonderfully realistic and compelling way that will have you hooked. This is a beautifully gothic will haunt you in the best of ways. Book hangover, here I come.
First of all, i do judge a book by its cover, and this one is SCREAMING at me"buy me! read me!" It's just so gorgeous it captures your attention. The story is super high paced, full of mystery, slow burn romance and suspense. It literally NEVER gives up the pace, and you'll find yourself devouring this book in a day, like I did! Arabel is a witch, her power is psychic, but she's been outcast. She finds herself tangled with Eli, a Traveler, to solve a series of mysterious murders. Not only she becomes a detective with paranormal powers, but she finds herself facing a very dangerous foe, that threatens her peace and her life. The magic system is really unique, the fact that magic intertwines with mystery and past family history, in a gothic/spooky atmosphere made it really entertaining. Plus, who doesn't love a familiar? And a Crow familiar?! I absolutely loved it. The romance is super sweet, a friends-to-lovers full of emotion and longing, perfect feelings for a first love YA! L.A. Brown's writing is atmospheric and enticing, and I'm really looking forward to read more from the Bird Girl Witches series!
AUTUMN DEATH was a really interesting book — a murder mystery set in fantasy world with witches, magic, and supernatural elements. The main character, 17 year old Arabel, has special psychic abilities that she’s bound and determined to use to help solve the murders before even more people are killed. The world that the author created was really neat and I love how the witches have ties to birds, with many having them as their familiars. The realm itself is called the Korvids, so that added yet another birdy layer to the whole story. The world is dark, the murder mystery is even darker, giving the whole book a very gothic feel. There’s also a touch of noir added due to Arabel and her fledgling detective skills. All told, I really enjoyed this witchy murder mystery. There’s a bit of romance, a whole lot of magic, and a fair bit of danger to round everything out. Pick this up if you enjoy: 🍁Covens/witches/witch families 🐦⬛Murder mysteries 🍁Creepy settings/gothic feel 🐦⬛Friends to lovers 🍁Found family 🐦⬛Coming of age stories
I liked this book, but there were some issues with it. The plot was the strongest point: it was interesting, the murders were intriguing, and the psychic flashes kept the storyline interesting enough to keep me reading. However, I found it annoying that, after a skirmish with the evil forces, the episode was cut short by the characters' amorous feelings. For example, the female character was bleeding, but suddenly she looked at her boyfriend and kissed him passionately; there was no coherent continuation of what had recently happened. Also, the love between the characters was over the top, especially considering the FC was only 17. There was too much desire for the main characters to forget the strenuous situations they were in. So the story was choppy. The characters probably needed more development. The thing I liked most was their telepathic bond, and I loved Ira — he was the best familiar ever!
I just finished this read and WOWIE, I loved it. It’s the perfect mix of gothic mystery and magical fantasy. It’s a cosy read that’s perfect for this time of year (or I guess more autumn lol) and it’s a story that you can really get sucked into. I loved learning about the characters and unraveling the mystery as we went through the book.
This book is a YA fantasy however it does have some romance. I loved seeing the relationship between Arabel and Eli grow, while they do fall for eachother fairly fast, I feel like that’s realistic considering their age!
If you like cosy mystery’s mingled with magic and the paranormal then I would definitely recommend this one! This book is available on KU now ✨
🕯️ supernatural detective 🖤 gothic vibes 🕯️ small town mystery 🖤 buncha dead people
Right out the gate there's murder, and instant interest in where the story is going to lead. The mystery surrounding the murders is intriguing and will keep you guessing throughout. I could not get enough of this fast-paced plot, all the magical happenings, the secrets, and the high stakes. I loved the unique magic system, the world building, psychic abilities, the gothic and paranormal vibes within, and her crow familiar Ira who I think stole the show. Eli and Arabel's relationship, though closer to instalove than slow burn, was well-done and works perfectly for this story. This was a fantastic witchy read and a great YA paranormal fantasy.
I can't wait for the rest of this series to come out, I bet they're all going to be fantastic reads. Thanks to R&R Book Tours and L.A. Brown for the eARC, I had a lot of fun reading this one!
