The Valentine Society #1

An Acquired Taste

Rate this book
Amelia is used to being referred to as an “acquired taste,” but never as literally as when she becomes a professional a vampire’s companion.

Overnight, Amelia goes from working late nights at a greasy LA diner to a neo-Regency world of beautiful ball gowns, glittering galas, and blood tasting notes. But her debut into vampire society only stokes her worst fears. Everyone wants to sample the unique flavor of her blood, yet nobody wants her as a long-term companion.

Nobody, that is, except for the mysterious Sebastian de Celeste. She's shocked when the handsome, notoriously reclusive vampire lord chooses her as his valentine. Yet he whisks her away to his gothic mountain estate only to avoid her company as much as possible.

Still, Amelia soon finds herself growing fond of the cranky vampire. But Sebastian has secrets, and skeletons in his closet (or rather, buried on the grounds). Amelia has had bad luck in love before, but the world of vampires is far more dangerous than the life she’s used to. This time, if she trusts the wrong person, the consequences could be deadly…

Story : 📖📖📖📖/5

I looooved that take on vampires ! I'm a huge fan of this genre, and the story was well written. The world building wasn't too complicated - we lacked some information about how and why vampires decided to come out from the dark and insert themselves in society - but that didn't bother me that much since it's more about the romance. I really like the Valentines concept and how vampires are able to get blood without any war with humans. The vibe and the lifestyle of many vampires was decadent and sinful, exactly how I pictured it would be.

As for the characters, I LOVED Sebastian. He is a shy, formal vampire, that s*cks at social cues and I found that so endearing and relatable. I loved how much he wanted to protect Amelia and make sure she felt safe. He's a book nerd and a dog lover, all while being beautiful... and he's got fangs. I mean, what more could you ask for ?

As for Amelia, I loved how sexually liberated she was. She really was the go-getter of their pairing and knew what she wanted. At first I felt like she was too bold, but hey, she loves vampires bite, Sebastian is basically a greek god, I totally get why she was instantly enamoured by him.

Still, this was not an insta-love. Maybe a bit of an insta-lust on Amelia's side, but the slow burn was SLOW BURNING.

The reason I took 0.5 stars off is because of the miscommunication trope, which added a lot of angst in the book. There was some instances where they made asumptions about each other, and if they communicated more, that would have helped their relationship a great deal. It frustrated me a bit - their chemistry was great and they were so cute together, I wanted them to finally be happy !

Overall, I loved the book. It was highly entertaining (I binge read it in 24 hours) and I liked that Amelia was different from the FMC I'm used to read about, it felt refreshing. I recommend it without second thought if you're looking for a well written, paranormal romance about vampires. You won't be disappointed !

* I received an ARC in exchange of an honest review. This is 100% my own opinion.

Valentine Contract

Amelia hasn’t been fortunate in her adult life. Her boyfriend used her to get through school then dumped her for someone else. Even though she had paid for the apartment, his name was on it and Amelia was on the streets.

Always a vampire aficionado, Amelia remembered the valentine magazine showing the glamorous women who gave themselves to vampires. She finds a manager who trains her to be more or less a classy escort who is also food for vampires.

After going to a ball where she met several vampires, she receives a contract from the one she was certain would be the least likely to be interested in her. Sebastian de Celeste is a reclusive vampire who never shows up in public and lives in a large old estate in the deep forest.

Their relationship is on and off and Amelia is confused by the intermittent attention she receives from her patron. Still, she tries to gain his attention and tries to lure him into enjoying his time with nothing Amelia and his staff.

Of course, this is one of those romances where the two main characters constantly misunderstand the signals they send to each other. It was enjoyable, mildly spicy and four stars worth of fun.

⭐️5, no notes.

But seriously, oh my gosh? I started this book at 11pm with the intention of reading a couple of chapters to get a feel for the book. Well, 4:30am and 260ish pages later, I had finished to book. This is such a fun and easy read.

I found myself drawn to Sebastian and wanting to know more about him. He’s a shy, social anxious, 200-something-year-old vampire who kind of sucks at communicating. He loves a dog and a library more than most people. I mean… if we’re being honest, Sebastian and I might have a lot of similarities.

Honestly, this brought me back to the past and little teenage me that read silly little vampire books like Vampire Kisses— that’s the closest thing I can compare this book to, and adult Vampire Kisses.

I do wish we would have gotten to see a bit more of the “after” story though. The book wrapped up pretty quickly after the pinnacle plot event.

A huge thank you to Skyla Gray for providing me with an ARC of An Acquired Taste!

Looking for a slow burn, tension-filled vampire romance with a hero who gives major Elijah Mikaelson vibes? Well, look no further!

“You hate dancing,” I say.
“I do. But I have never tried it with you.”

Tropes:
~slowwww burn
~forced proximity
~rich, seclusive hero
~vampire hero

This book was FANTASTIC! It used some common vampire tropes but then added unique twists. Our heroine, Amelia, gets dumped by her douchebag boyfriend at the start of the novel, and finds herself kicked out of the apartment and needing funds quickly. To add to the stress, she had promised her little sister a place to stay when she starts college in a few months, and Amelia refuses to let it slip that she’s now single and homeless.

When she sees an ad for a company that helps humans to become a vampire’s Valentine (i.e. a contracted blood donor) she decides to throw caution to the wind and give it a try. The fact that she’s always found vampires and the idea of one biting her to be sexy af doesn’t hurt 😉 However, this dream quickly turns into a nightmare when she realizes that her blood is far from delicious, and in fact all the vampires who sample from her are completely disgusted by her taste🩸

So then why does the intimidating, handsome, reclusive Sebastian de Celeste offer her a 6 month contract to live at his estate and be his personal Valentine? Guess you’ll have to read it and find out!

I was totally gripped by the tension between these two! It was a slow but hot simmer through most of the novel, with so much tension brimming just beneath the surface of their interactions. It honestly gave me butterflies a few times, even as I was cursing both of them to just make a darn move or say how they felt haha. Sebastian was so wrapped up in defensive layers against Amelia that it took her weeks to get him to say more than 7 words at a time (and yes, she was counting). He gave off vibes that he was apathetic towards her, but then if she mentioned not sleeping well a softer pillow would magically show up at her door, or if she mentioned having a cold then soup randomly appeared. And when he finally started letting his guard down and admitting how he felt *swoons*

“After all these years, I thought I had forgotten what sunlight felt like, but then I met you. And step by step, you have led me out of the darkness.”

There was also a bit of a mystery side plot involving Sebastian's past that added some intrigue and gothic vibes. And don’t even get me started on not one, but two, showdowns between Sebastian and certain characters who thought they could be disrespectful towards Amelia. 🥵 As I said at the beginning of my review, he was giving hardcore Elijah Mikaelson vibes (and that’s exactly who I was picturing while reading).

If this book was Taylor Swift lyrics:

”I’m like the water when your ship rolled in that night
Rough on the surface but you cut through like a knife”

4.5 ⭐️ for another amazingly written book by Skyla Gray.
I found this author through booksirens.com and have really enjoyed the monster research facility books, but this book proves that SG can write in this genre very well.

The MFC / MMC, Amelia and Sebastian are so very well written, their characters beautifully illustrate the diversity in people when they are judged stereotypically.

The author provides just enough back story to explain the characters' intentions, but I have to say, the miscommunication was a bit much for me at times

The slow burn? Burning slowly, baby!

I received an advance review copy for free from booksirens.com, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

So where do I sign to become a vampire’s equivalent of a sugar baby? Because…✍🏻

This was super fun! I liked learning about the vampires’ world and how the whole valentine idea worked within it. Amelia was a delight! It was super refreshing to have an MC in a world of vampires whose blood isn’t delicious to every vampire they come across. Having her being more of an “acquired taste” was fun to read. I adored Sebastian and I want so much more of him and his sweet, shy vampire ways.

I devoured this in one sitting and can’t wait to see what else goes on in this world.

Amelia never expected to be a professional valentine—literally a companion to a vampire. But in Skyla Grace's captivating world, that's exactly where she ends up, diving into the luxurious (and dangerous) world of vampire courts, companionship, and high society.

Absolutely LOVED this book! I had the opportunity to read it as an ARC. It was such a fun read, filled with romance, mystery, and a touch of danger. The worldbuilding was incredible—loved how each vampire court had its own distinct personality:

Camelia Court: Beauty and strength embodied
Vulpe Court: The endless thirst for excellence
Solomon Court: The keepers of the unwritten
Celeste Court: The preservers of history

The slow-burn romance was a delicious build-up, and the ending left me feeling giddy. I NEED more of this world! There’s so much more to explore—Sebastian’s war-torn past, the depth of the Courts, and Amelia’s complicated relationship with her overbearing parents.

Tropes you’ll love:
Modern Vampire Romance
High Society & Court Systems
Slow Burn & Spice
Found Family

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫 / 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 – Highly recommend for vampire romance lovers!

Thank you to the author for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I’ll try to keep this nice and brief. The synopsis captured my attention and I was extremely excited for this, and rightfully so!! It was an extremely fun read and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and the characters.

I might just be used to longer books/series, but this one felt kind of rushed, which is why I did 4⭐️ instead of 5. That is however something people actively look for and enjoy, so I don’t necessarily see it as a negative thing.

For people who care about spice (I know there’s a lot of you out there), I rate this 2🌶️. There were 2 sex-related scenes and one full on sex scene, but they were not incredibly detailed or long. Maybe half- to one-full page.

The plot is unique and I found myself really invested in the innerworkings of vampire society. Amelia and Sebastian were a great paring, it was just a fun time!!

Recommemded if you’re looking for a quick, fun vampire read :)

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via BookSirens)

I liked the concept of this as it was something I hadn't seen before. The story itself kind of gave Beauty and the Beast vibes but with vampires. I also liked seeing Sebastian come out of his shell more as the story progressed.

However, parts of it felt underdeveloped/rushed but that could have more to do with this being on the shorter side which didn't have the room for fleshing things out more. I also also a little confused at the relationship progression when they spent a good part of the story not communicating properly. (One of my least favorite tropes.)

Overall, not a bad read if you're looking for something quick and a little spicy. I just don't think it was for me.

ARC Review

⤷ 4⭐️

No because WOW. I honestly didn't expect myself to be fully into the vampire world (I wasn't a Twilight girlie at ALL) but Skyla just did something to my brain chemistry and completely altered it with this INCREDIBLY perfect book. The way she perfectly balanced both worlds of self discovery and fantasy but also with touches of romance? WOW. I also love the premise of the story and the whole concept behind it; it makes it so so SO unique. I wanted to see more of Amelia and Sebastian and get to witness their relationship on a deeper scale, but regardless, i'm in LOVE with this one.

✿ This is a quick, fun, and absolutely captivating vampire read! (Skyla, you just added one more boyfriend to my book boyfriends list THANK YOU!! 🤭🫶🏼)

Tropes / Microtropes:
✩ Vampire x human
✩ High society & Court system
✩ Grumpy x sunshine
✩ Fancy libraries (do you hear me bookish people?)
✩ Gothic mansion aura
✩ Angsty!! 🦋🦋

Thank you Skyla for sending me an ARC of your absolutely outstanding book! 🥹

Thank you so much to the author for the free e-ARC in return for an honest review! I'm honored to have been part of this and am excited for you and your future work. I wish you the best in everything!

With that let’s begin.

When I read the synopsis initially, I was SUPER excited! I started this about two days ago when I received a notification from Gray and paused my other reads to start this. It was a “let’s push in a couple of chapters a day” kind of read for me until last night when I decided to power through.

A little bit of everything, the positive and negative in no particular order:

○ The consistency with the writing could have been better. Some parts were well written, and other parts felt like I was reading a Wattpad fanfiction. I’m sorry. The choice of words in some sentences had chills running down my spine and not in a good way. Seeing the words shipping, and bonking among others made me laugh, but more so that I would much prefer this in a conversation, not in a book. I think if I was first introduced to our girl being a form of a fangirl of sorts, then maybe I wouldn’t have much of a problem with it. Keyword, maybe. But I wasn’t.

○ Diversity and Inclusiveness— Gray had a variety of characters that felt natural when they were introduced and I liked that.

○ ”Valentine” — This entire concept of being recruited to be a Valentine was unique in the sense that it's referred to as being a vampire’s companion. A sugar baby, as described in the book. I enjoyed reading about the process and how not everything was as it seemed to the public eye. Maybe it’s just me and maybe I’m just being nitpicky about this but, I feel like if you’re referring to someone as a “Valentine” you’re labeling them as a group of persons so it should be capitalized like Valentine versus valentine throughout the book. I haven’t fully settled on this thought, to be honest.

note: some spoilers ahead, read at your own risk~

Overall, personally not what I would be looking for when I think of Urban Fantasy, Vampires, and Neo-Regency. That’s okay . Perfect for those casually reading, and want fluff, especially if you enjoy Slow-Burn, Self-Discovery, and, of course, Light-hearted Romance.

Skyla Gray's "An Acquired Taste" follows Amelia Burton in the paranormal world of vampires and their valentines, an alluring and romanticized career choice as a companion that provides blood for their respective patrons. After fallout in her everyday life leaves her on the path of a valentine, she is introduced to Sebastian de Celeste, and a new mystery unravels beneath a budding romance. Though the vampiric house relationships and Sebastian's personal background feel a bit rushed by the end, he is a charmingly obtuse romantic interest that matches well with Amelia's faux confidence, and the almost-gothic setting provides a great backdrop for their story. I would have liked to see more interactions and intensity with Sebastian's foil Alexander and a deeper exploration of Gray's lore, but the author does well in creating a new, page-turning, and vampire-filled world.

I was practically giddy seeing an ARC opportunity in my inbox from Skyla Gray to read her new vampire themed book. I was already a big fan of her other two works, but a vampire story is always my go to pick.

In this modern world with a slight fantasy element, the story opens up on the main human character Amelia who ended up at rock bottom after her boyfriend breaks up with her. The scene is so great, because it feels believable that she missed the buildup to the breakup in the dull daily life being the overworked main contributor to money/rent. She ends up with no place to stay, in a city away from her family who she mostly doesn’t like anyway.

In the opening scene, we learn vampires are known to humans (they have been since the 1950’s, which is not something I’ve seen explored as a concept in a vampire story and i’m suddenly so interested in some sort of prequel story in this world!) and that the idea of them appeals to Amelia. Vampires are known to take on valentines, who are basically sugar babies who give blood. The vampire laws have respected laws mean they’re treated very well, are paid for their services, and are always glamorous. At rock bottom, Amelia signs up to train to be one, as vampire society is also old fashioned and very strict on their idea of etiquette.

After essentially a fun training montage, which introduces some two side characters who do stay woven into the storyline, Amelia attends her first ball looking for a patron (a vampire who she would be under contract to) and learns her blood has a unique taste that fascinates the vampires but also isn’t actually appealing to the majority. Ive definitely read my fair share of vampires being drawn to one human’s blood in particular, but I don’t believe I’ve ever come across one where a normal human character’s blood does the opposite to the majority.
I find Gray is so good at coming up with some pretty interesting and unique concepts and exploring them in a way that worked for the worlds she’s build.

By the next day, Amelia ends up with a patron and moves away to spend the next 6 months under contract and living at his mansion. Of course her patron Sebastian ends up being a known recluse who doesn’t show himself in society too often. His mansion is also at least a mile away from the nearest town. I’m a big fan of this while gothic castle away from society set up.

The back and forth communication issues between Sebastian and Amelia, who both are actually clearly trying in their own way, makes up a chunk of the rest of the book. Amelia is living her new daily life as a valentine, being pampered and coming into her own, but also slowly breaking Sebastian’s walls. I really wanted to provide all the specifics I found appealing about the set up, but the story itself really just needs to be read.

Amelia is a great protagonist as well. She makes both right and wrong conclusions and choices throughout, but the wrong ones don’t feel so obviously wrong and instead usually are just from lack of information. They’re still reasonable choices and don’t typically leave me frustrated by the loops the character is making to avoid a choice that makes more sense for the drama.

I will say, it’s not the spiciest, but I liked the scene that happen. I respect the choice to focus on the story instead as it really worked better to up the atmosphere of the book. The lonely feelings and the moments of chemistry that happen over the course of months of slowly getting to know each other wouldn’t work as well if the characters were also frequently hooking up. Theres still moments they are weaker to their desires, but it often leaves the pair more confused. It also inspires the main conflict of the story.

While I’ve multiple times mentioned in reviews to not ending miscommunication as a trope, it works so well in this book because the characters learn each other through the course of the story and the conclusion happens because they both make choices based on what they know each other and it works out because they’ve both grown so much. Not to mention all the main details that felt like just normal conversation through the book ended up playing its part in the conclusion. I was completely content in how the book wrapped up. Honestly my only minor complaint is it could have been longer since it does deal a lot with moments of growth over time, but that’s also me just selfishly wanting more.

A modern gothic, first in a series of “valentines” for hire by and for vampires.

Having been unceremoniously dumped by her live in boyfriend after she’d supported them both while he completed his post grad studies, Amelia is without a place to live or prospects of a higher paying job. In the face of her sister’s impending move to share living quarters with her, Amelia answers an ad for prospective valentines, and is given a crash course in etiquette and deportment, a ballgown and an initial payment, then brought to a valentine ball to meet potential patrons who may wish to offer for her services by providing her lodging and wages for a contractual period of time.

At the ball, Amelia is repeatedly mortified by the increasingly dramatic rejections of her first five would be patrons who sampled her very distinctive sanguinary bouquet.

Humiliated and on the verge of despair, she steps out to the gardens with her chaperone to clear her head, but she’s left without her chaperone when he attends to a medical emergency. As she waits for him, she’s accosted by two unsavory vampires who attempt to sample her wares without permission when suddenly a gorgeous aristocratic vamp warns them off in favor of requesting his own tasting, but only with the express consent of Amelia herself.

At first relieved then elated at the opportunity for a contract, Amelia is quickly dismayed and once again disconsolate when the handsome prospect produces a syringe rather than partake directly from her wrist as others had done. The next evening, she’s stunned to learn her dashing but confusing savior has offered a six month trial.

Reclusive and extremely reluctant to interact any more than necessary with the outside world, Sebastian still mourns a loss from decades ago about which he refuses to speak. He only attends the valentines ball out of necessity: he requires human blood to exist. He loathes the pomp and circumstance of it, the various factions in attendance, and society in general, so he’s stunned by the heady flavor of the brunette aspirant valentine he rescues from two lowlifes. He’s also terrified by his reaction to the woman herself, and he vows to keep her at arm’s length.

As Amelia and Sebastian navigate their transactional relationship, lines become blurred, and it’s a slow burn toward the inevitable reckoning of what precisely they mean to each other, if anything, outside their agreement.

I enjoyed this novella a lot, and am curious for future books in the series. A tiny criticism is at least two of the main conflicts were visible from space, so to speak; they were easily guessed at, and as the slow motion trainwrecks unfolded this reader was wincing quite a bit throughout.

I received an advance reader copy from the author and booksirens, and I’m sharing my honest impressions.

An Acquired Taste
Skyla Gray
Pgs

“Trust me when I say that all vampires are grateful that humans like you exist.”

An Acquired Taste by Skyla Gray was a fresh and opulent spin on the tried and true vampire romance genre. Bringing us the world of centuries-old vampires and their valentines who fed them, Skyla Gray painted a vision of gothic, complicated fantasy romance with a story that is certain to take you on an adventure. We were first introduced to Amelia, a strong, outgoing, sometimes brash girl who was just dumped by her boyfriend and kicked out of their apartment. Unsure of where to go or what to do, Amelia finds herself on the bus, staring at a poster advertising a valentine, the unique human companions matched up with a vampire that will feed on them. Knowing she has no choice, Amelia contacts them and starts immediately into her new job as a Valentine in training. We’re quickly thrust into the glittering and dangerous world of vampires and their customs, and Amelia is a rare occurrence with her unique, one-of-a-kind blood palette.

“Instead, I am left to wander, alone in the quiet halls, wondering if I’m the one who’s been reduced to a ghost.”

From the first ball, Amelia keeps us on our toes as we follow along on her journey as a valentine for recluse Sebastian and as she learns how to navigate this dangerous and secretive society. Skyla Gray did an excellent job weaving together a complex, gritty, emotional, and gut-wrenching world. The supporting characters, both human and vampire, added much flavor to the rest of the plot and made me want more of the story. There were times that miscommunication had me groaning, but it was written so beautifully and well done that I can’t imagine the story without it. Sebastian was the perfect dramatic vampire with his broody ways and shy nature. Overall, this book was a massive hit as it was well-written, full of unforgettable characters, and had a small amount of spicy vampire spice. Well done.

Thank you so much to Skyla Gray for providing me with this book to read and review. This has quickly become one of my favorite vampire books, and I loved Amelia and Sebastian.

Summary-Amelia has her first debut into Vampire Society as a valentine, a vampire companion. Her intrigue in the vampire world seems short lived when she finds out her blood is only for the most refined palate. No one is interested in making her their long-term companion due to the abhorrent taste of her blood. Except for the mysterious recluse, Sebastian de Celeste. Amelia isn’t sure if he hired her out of pity or actually likes the taste. Sebastian is determined to avoid Amelia but she has other plans.

Review- It’s giving Beauty and The Beast
if the Beast was a vampire and
they were on The Bachelorette!

This book is so cute! It’s an easy, fast paced read. The world was unique and I liked the idea that vampires are known to the world and humans are consenting, paid parties. I enjoyed the tug and pull between Amelia and Sebastian. I would have liked more insight on why Amelia’s blood was so abhorrent to most vampires but irresistible to Sebastian. I was eating this book up! I think it could’ve been better if the training, debut to the society stage was more drawn out with more details about the world. Maybe more of a build up to Alexander. The spicy scene in the library while he’s reading!😅 Overall I really enjoyed this read and finished it in one day!

I was sent this book as an ARC.

I have read the ARC and this review is being left voluntarily.

I enjoyed reading this fascinating urban human/vampire world that Skyla Gray has created. It has been very different than the vampire, fae, shifter fantasies that I have read, but I was still intrigued. This book is definitely different than your typical Twilight vampire romance and I am here for it.
The Valentine society created in this book is well thought out and executed. The hierarchy and world building in this new society is easy to understand.

The FMC, ohhh Amelia. She is so naive I almost pity her, but to fall for someone you have barely said 10 words to, very Little Mermaid vibes. As a young adult, living in LA I figured she would have more street sense than to fawn over any man who gives her a speck of attention. But alas, this is a romance book and people fall in love when the other person bats an eyelash.

The MMC, Sebastian de Celeste. A man of a few words, rich, powerful, dark and mysterious. What other kind of MMC is there in a Romantasy????

But if I enjoyed it so much, why the three stars??

I don’t understand how/why she fell in love with him when she can’t even talk to him?!? The MMC wasn’t someone you (I personally) wouldn’t swoon over. He was just too dark and mysterious, there weren’t enough details about him through most of the book to be hot and bothered over him. The romance between characters felt more of a convenience instead of something genuine. The spice wasn’t spicing for me either. There are a couple of spicy scenes but they felt rushed and more offscreen than onscreen.

After all is said and done, it is a quick and enjoyable read. It is definitely something I would recommend as a palette cleanser.

oh my god, I absolutely LOVED this book. A grumpy x sunshine, slow burn, vampire x human romance...OMG SIGN ME UP!!

I know this is kind of crazy but this is my first ever vampire romance book I've read (I have watched a ton of vampire shows/movies). I really enjoyed this world, the characters, and the plot. I loved both of our leads. Amelia, my love, I just know she deserves the entire world and more. As for Sebastian, it's just something about a hermit vampire that does it for me. They act like they don't care but are secretly in love with the girl...ugh I'll eat it up every SINGLE time!

Oh, the TENSION was HOT!! I will always EAT UP a slow-burn romance. This was the perfect slow burn and worked so perfectly with this couple and the plot. I promise it's worth it 😉.

One thing I wanted to know was Sesbastian's thoughts...maybe a potential side story on some of his thoughts....? 👀👀 He consumed all of my thoughts and I'm so curious about his side story.

Tropes:
🧛 vampire x human ("valentine")
🩸 high society + court system
🧛 modern gothic romance
🩸 slow burn
🧛 found family

Thank you so much to Skyla Gray for allowing me to read this amazing book! All opinions are my own!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a little basic, and there’s not really a lot of romantic development throughout the plot, but it kept me entertained.

The first half is a little slow while you’re waiting for the plot to really start, but the pacing is pretty consistent throughout the rest of the story.

Our FMC really goes through it, and it’s nice to see a fake it til you make it mentality in a book that is actually relatable. She’s completely blindsided, and even though you could see it coming because she seems naive, she’s not such an idiot that it feels unrealistic.

The middle of the book is where the bulk of the plot happens, and yet, not actually that much happens. There’s a lot of moments that means a whole lot of nothing until be very end of the book. It’s a lot of this happened, here’s why near the end.

That being said, I really liked both the FMC and MMC. I wish there was more of the MMC involved in the plot. We don’t really get to see a lot of him, making me wish there was more. I would love another book in his POV.

Thank you very much to Skyla Gray for an ARC of this book.

I’m sorry but I really dislike the main character. Like bordering on hate because she’s so obviously clueless but acts like she knows everything. She bemoans how lonely she is and the divide between her and the staff, but girl IS staff! She’s the vampires food source. And yet she’s wearing fancy dresses (because that’s what Valentines do I guess?) which *obviously* is going to show she wants to be separate from the house staff. Way to make friends lol.

She walks around his estate all day with nothing to do because she’s never thought of idk reading? Helping the other staff with their work? She’s lacking inspiration to write so… decides scrolling social media and walking throughout the mansion is the way to go.

Also, Sebastian doesn’t owe her his time. She is being paid for her blood. I really just don’t understand why shes so mad at him. This job isn’t as fancy as you wanted? That sucks, use the time to write a book or start prepping for job hunting when this job ends in 6 months. Ugh I can’t stand her.

If you like mysterious broody vampires 🧛🏻, regency era romances like Pride and Prejudice or Bridgerton with a modern twist, reality dating shows, and Beauty and the Beast vibes, then you’ll enjoy An Acquired Taste.

Humans attend fancy vampire balls for an opportunity to become a vampire’s “valentine,” essentially a “sugar baby.” When someone is chosen, they enter into a contract with a vampire and get to live in luxury, in exchange for their 🩸 and usually a romantic partnership. Our FMC has an interesting “flavor” that scares away all of the vampires. Until, she meets ✨him.✨ The one vampire that might actually be drawn to her unique taste.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and thought the concept was a lot of fun. However, I was left wanting more courtly intrigue. I was curious about the different vampire courts and the tensions that existed between them. The world building just wasn’t as developed as I would’ve liked.

I LOVED this book. It was a fresh new take on a vampire story. The concept of vampires having a valentine which they receive their book from was very interesting. I also like how they were divided into different courts by last name. I loved how Sebastian and Amelia’s stories played out. I was honestly not expecting the ending. The book had just enough spice in it and wasn’t too much. I literally did not want to put the book down at all. From the start of the book I was immediately drawn into the story.

I also liked how the author brought in past valentines and past lovers it really made the book have some twists and turns. I’ll definitely be recommending this one!

“hearing that filthy word from his perfect lips, because of me”

This book! Slow burn romance with little, but enough, spice was so great. 6 stars if I could. This was my first vampire romance since Twilight (LOL) and I need more! The writing was impeccable. The self worth and confidence growth of the FMC had me cheering her on throughout. The growth of an introvert MMC to finally learning to share his feelings aloud but never letting it stop him from showing her cared in different ways and always protecting his sweetheart make my own heart melt

I finished this book within a few hours and honestly can’t wait for the next book in the series. I love how Sebastian is written and his character development towards the end, there was plot twists as well this has to be one of the best vampire books I’ve read, I can’t wait to be able to get a physical copy! The author is extremely talented and I can’t wait to read all her future books and continue supporting her!

I received an ARC copy in return for an honest review.

Thank you BookSirens for this arc! This book is an interesting premise that had me laughing a bit when I first started it. But it definitely sucks you in! The FMC was so refreshing! I feel like most FMC’s in this genre can be a little whiny and do not express their thoughts but she was so REAL. The whole book was frustratingly beautiful. The genuine characters and their insecurities were written so well that by the end, you couldn’t help but fall in love with them, flaws and all! I am very excited to see what the next book will bring!

The world Skyla has created is so interesting. The dynamic between the Valentine’s and their Patron’s is so good. I loved that vampires are known in this world and not hidden away like in a lot of other stories.

The picture that is painted of Sebastian’s life is so perfect and moody and Amelia’s fight for him to open up is heartbreaking at times, but so worth it in the end.

I knew this was a shorter book going into it but I was so engrossed in the world and the couple that I wish it had been longer. I just loved them and wanted more.

A modern vampire romance that involves a gothic mansion! Grumpy x sunshine with a little spice. A refreshing vampire read with a little bit of mystery and several twists along the way. The only reason a star was knocked off my rating the miscommunication trope which was featured quite a bit. Still an enjoyable read that I could not sit down once I started!
